Brief prayer rule of Seraphim of Sarov for the laity

Morning rule of Seraphim of Sarov

Rule of St. Seraphim of Sarov for the laity

When you wake up, stand at home in front of the holy icons and begin to read three times:

Our Father

Our Father, who art in heaven! Hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done, as it is in heaven and on earth. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, just as we forgive our debtors; and do not lead us into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one.

This prayer was conveyed to people by Christ himself in the Gospel of Matthew, when he delivered the Sermon on the Mount. Then read it by heart three times

Virgin Mary, rejoice

Virgin Mary, Hail, blessed Mary, the Lord is with you, blessed are you among women and blessed is the fruit of your womb, for you have given birth to the Savior of our souls.

Then sing or say it once

Symbol of faith

I believe in one God the Father, Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth, visible to all and invisible. And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Son of God, the only begotten, who was born of the Father before all ages; Light from Light, true God from true God, born, uncreated, consubstantial with the Father, by Him all things were; for our sake, man and for our salvation came down from heaven, and became incarnate from the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary, and became human; Crucified for us under Pontius Pilate, and suffered and was buried; and rose again on the third day, according to the Scriptures; and ascended into heaven, and sits at the right hand of the Father; and again the coming one will judge with glory the living and the dead, His Kingdom will have no end. And in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the Life-Giving One, who proceeds from the Father, who with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified, who spoke the prophets. Into the One, Holy, Catholic and Apostolic Church. I confess one Baptism for the remission of sins. Tea of the resurrection of the dead. And the life of the next century. Amen.

Instructions of the Athonite Elder Joseph

(prayer for your neighbor)

When you want to pray for your loved ones, read the prayer for them: “Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on Your servants.” Wanting to offer prayer for some time for those who have need of it, we read for the first time: “Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on Thy servants” and remember their names, and then we say “Thy servants” namelessly, and mind without thinking about them, he is not distracted. The Lord knows for whom we pray. Also, during prayer, one should not delve into the problems that occupy a person (not imagine or imagine anything), but simply say: “have mercy on Thy servant,” and God will send him His grace.

In addition, the Monk Seraphim commanded to confess and receive communion on all fasts and major holidays:

The Monk Seraphim commanded: “not to miss the opportunity to use the grace bestowed by communion with the Holy Mysteries of Christ as often as possible. Trying, if possible, to concentrate in the humble consciousness of one’s complete sinfulness, with hope and firm faith in God’s ineffable mercy, one should proceed to redeem everything and everyone of the saints. Sacrament." – Whoever partakes will be saved everywhere; “I don’t remember whoever doesn’t partake,” said the elder. “To partake of the Holy Mysteries of Christ,” he said to Archpriest Vasily Sadovsky, who was caring for the Diveyevo sisters, “I command them, father, on all four fasts and twelve holidays, even on major holidays; the more often, the better... The grace bestowed upon us by communion is so great that no matter how unworthy and no matter how sinful a person may be, if only in the humble consciousness of his all-sinfulness, he approaches the Lord, who redeems us all, at least from head to head. feet covered with sores of sins, and will be cleansed, father, by the grace of Christ, will brighten more and more, will be completely enlightened and saved!”

Predictions

Throughout his entire adult life, the elder urged people to pacify the physical body, renounce worldly goods, and lead an ascetic lifestyle. Luxury and wealth, even the smallest, in his opinion, have no meaning in the life of a true Orthodox believer.

Seraphim of Sarov predicted that the royal branch of the Romanov princes would end in the Ipatiev house. From a young age, the miracle worker had a presentiment of the historical events of Russia. It is known that his first prediction was the Decembrist uprising. Later he was given a sign about the Crimean War (1853-55). The Russo-Japanese and other world wars were also predicted by this great man.

His most famous prophecies relate to the royal family. About Nicholas II, he said that he would glorify him. The martyrdom of the entire royal family and the subsequent revolution were predicted by the phrase: “The angels will not have time to count souls.”

The elder predicted the canonization of the royal family with the words: “God will exalt the king.” About the present time, Seraphim of Sarov said that after the communist government (he called them invaders, rebels and murderers), the country will be given 15 years to repent. During these years, the people must ask for forgiveness from Christ and pray according to the prayer rules of Seraphim of Sarov.

Mass national repentance never happened, which may be why the default occurred in 2000. After all, the holy elder predicted troubles and hardships for the country if repentance did not occur. Elder Seraphim also knew about the coming fall of the Orthodox faith. But he warned that discord between people should not be allowed. Otherwise, the collapse of the entire state will come; people need to learn to negotiate among themselves.

How to pray correctly?

Starting the morning and evening prayer rules of Seraphim of Sarov, you need to get up, cross yourself and begin to read the sacred texts. For women, during the process of prayer, a headscarf is necessary to cover their heads. Men must be without headwear. At the end of the morning activity, ask for a blessing for the coming day and go to work or study.

In the evening prayer rule, the believer thanks the Lord for the day he has lived. You can add the text of the prayer “May God rise again” to it. At the end of the ritual, cross the corners of the room you are in.

In the event that there is no time left to observe the entire ritual, Seraphim of Sarov called for saying a short morning and evening prayer rule during the day as a symbol of connection with higher powers. Words such as “have mercy on me, a sinner,” are not difficult to pronounce in the turmoil of ordinary everyday life. For those who do not find time to cleanse their souls with prayer, these short phrases make it possible to remember that there is no need to strive for ideals and that we need to bring good into the world.

Acceptance of faith

Over time, Prokhor began to understand that worldly worries and troubles prevented him from devoting all his thoughts to serving the Lord. Gradually, the realization grew stronger in his head that his life should pass outside the monastery walls. He saw his future in serving the world and people. The young man told his friends about this, who supported him in these aspirations. Over the years, the intention to become a monk only became stronger in his soul, and Prokhor decided to open up to his mother. Agafya, as always, fully supported her son, whose inclinations had been discovered long ago.

Prokhor said goodbye to his family and, in the company of five companions, went to the Kiev-Pechersk monastery. Before leaving, Agafya allowed him to bow before the icons of Christ and the Mother of God. Then she blessed and hung a copper cross on her chest. Prokhor carried this cross throughout his life and was buried with it.

It was a long way to Kyiv, which had to be covered on foot. The road of the young man and his companions ran through all the local shrines. In one of them he met the monk Dosifei, who was distinguished by his deep vision of people and insight. Interesting fact: the noble daughter Daria Tyapkina was hiding under the name Dosifei. She hid from her family in a monastery, disguised as a man. This change was learned only after her death. And of course, Prokhor Moshnin did not know about this then. The monk Dosifei saw the grace of God over the young man and ordered him to go to the Sarov hermitage. There Prokhor had to carry the word of the Savior into the souls of people.

Childhood

In worldly life, the elder bore the name Prokhor Moshnin. He was born on July 19, 1759. Place of birth - the city of Kursk. The merchant family to which the boy belonged was not short of funds. Isidor Moshnin, Prokhor's dad, owned brick factories and was actively interested in and carried out construction activities. The parents adhered to the rules of Orthodox life, participated in the construction of the temple in their hometown and set an excellent example for their son. Prokhor's father left this world early, transferring his entire fortune and the work of building the temple to his wife Agafya, an extremely pious woman. The main part of her life was spent in prayer and helping the poor. At that time, Prokhor was barely three years old.

The first sign of the Lord's grace over Prokhor appeared when the child was approximately 7-8 years old. While inspecting the next temple, mother and son climbed to the highest bell tower. The boy, as befits a child of his age, was nimble and interested in the world around him. Running along the upper platform of the bell tower, he could not resist and fell. The mother rushed downstairs, thinking that Prokhor was already dead. However, the boy met her safe and sound, standing on two legs.

The second sign happened two years later. Prokhor fell seriously ill, and no treatment helped. The Mother of God appeared to him in a dream and said that she would visit him and save him from illness. At that time, a service was going on in a nearby church and a religious procession was taking place with the icon of the Sign of the Mother of God. By coincidence, the path of the religious procession ran through the land plot of the Moshnins. Then Prokhor’s mother decided to take the child to the people and venerate the icon. And the disease subsided. So it became clear that the Lord had chosen the boy for important matters and his fate would be connected with the Orthodox faith.

Youth

Prokhor Moshnin had an older brother, Alexey. From childhood, both children were taught to manage their father’s business and work in trade. But, unlike his brother, Prokhor was not inclined to make money in this field. Having passed the age of twelve, the boy became more and more interested in reading the Bible, tried to attend all services in the temple, and studied the Psalter.

Agafya Moshnina, of course, noticed this inclination of her son and did not interfere with his impulses. Since Prokhor did not have the opportunity to attend evening liturgies (he was studying commerce), he got used to getting up early and going to morning services. At that time, a holy fool lived in Kursk (his name has not been preserved). The holy fool was considered blessed and revered, and the boy quickly became acquainted with him. This man influenced the strengthening of the Orthodox faith within the young soul. It was then, in his youth, that discipline began to take root in him, which led to the creation of morning and evening prayer rules.

What is this rule?

The Monk Seraphim left, as mentioned above, a prayer rule for the nuns of the Diveyevo Monastery.

What is this Seraphim rule for the laity? What does it represent? It is now generally accepted that you need to read the “Our Father” prayer three times, “Hail the Virgin Mary” three times and the “Creed” three times.

And here is what the elder himself bequeathed. After awakening, a person must stand in front of the icons. First, the “Our Father” is read three times, in honor of the Trinity. Then “Rejoice, Virgin Mary,” also three times. And once the “Symbol of Faith”.

After reverently completing the short rule, the layman begins his business.

If a person is busy with household chores or working physically, he needs to read the Jesus Prayer “silently” to himself. About yourself - that means in your mind.

It's time for lunch. Before him, a person said the Jesus Prayer. Now, before sitting down at the table, he will again perform the morning prayer rule. He will read “Our Father” and “Rejoice to the Virgin Mary” three times. Once - "Creed".

After lunch, you should say a prayer to the Mother of God: “Most Holy Theotokos, save me, a sinner (sinner).” And so on until the evening.

Before going to bed, a Christian reads the morning rule again. He goes to bed, protecting himself with the sign of the cross.

Faith and family are inseparable: Seraphim’s rule for the laity can be read by agreement. Like this? Each family member reads one or two prayers from the rule.

Are you completely unable to fulfill it? Seraphim of Sarov recommended reading the rule everywhere: whether you are walking down the street, doing business, or lying in bed due to illness. As the monk said, this rule is the foundation of Christianity. And by reading it, you can achieve absolute Christian perfection.

Hermit

It is known that during his time Seraphim of Sarov lived at a distance from the monastery. His cell was located in the forest, the monk led an ascetic lifestyle, as befits a clergyman. Throughout his life, Seraphim preached the rejection of excesses, strictness in food and life. At any time of the year one could see the same clothes on him. He obtained food in the forest on his own. Seraphim of Sarov slept a short sleep, prayed incessantly and read the Holy Scriptures. Next to his cell, the monk planted a vegetable garden and planted an apiary. He could eat well for months.

Seraphim chose pillarism as a feat for his spiritual path. He stood on the stone for months and tirelessly read prayers. In this way the title of venerable, that is, similar to Jesus, came to him. Since 1807, Seraphim of Sarov practically stopped receiving visitors and kept a vow of silence for many months. Later, returning to the monastery, he went into seclusion, which lasted fifteen years. After its completion, the monk continued to receive visitors.

Who are the rules useful for?

Not every person makes sense to use the morning and evening rules of Seraphim of Sarov. The beneficial effect will be felt by the Orthodox, who wholeheartedly believes in Jesus Christ. It is important to understand your spiritual path and strive to develop it and grow. Each word of these short texts carries a sacred meaning that should resonate in the soul of the believer. Spiritual self-improvement should be characteristic of you. When is the morning and evening rule not read? For those whose faith is not so strong, there is the opportunity to make appeals to the Lord on the territory of the church and confess to the priest.

What it is?

The Monk Seraphim of Sarov left the prayer rule. It was intended for the sisters of the Diveyevo Monastery. This was explained by the fact that novices and nuns have the opportunity to visit the temple much more often than ordinary lay people.

The nuns of the monastery have a lot to do all the time. And there is not enough time even more than that of worldly people. Nevertheless, Seraphim’s rule for the laity somehow imperceptibly found itself outside the monastery. And now those people who do not have enough time for long prayer resort to him.

Meaning

The morning and evening rules of Seraphim of Sarov are akin to regular physical activity. Just as exercise trains the body, so prayers temper the souls of believers, strengthening them. The holy elder himself called on all his companions and visitors to pray daily, in this way purifying their thoughts, completely devoting their consciousness to the Lord. The interpretation of the morning and evening rules comes down to achieving perfection in the Christian faith. By saying all three prayers every day, a person grows spiritually and his worldview changes.
