How to correctly read the Indestructible Psalter about health

In ancient times, the abbot of the monastery on the Euphrates, the Monk Alexander, lived in Mesopotamia. The holy abbot pondered for a long time over the text of the first psalm. It said that a person should be in connection with God day and night.

But a person cannot do that. To resolve the contradiction, the Monk Alexander came up with a new rule - to pray 24 hours a day.

But Alexander was afraid that the monks would not understand him - no one had done this before. And he prayed for 3 years that the Lord would give him a sign that he wanted this rule. And He finally gave.

And Alexander established a new prayer rule in his monastery.

He divided the monks into 24 prayer guards. Each guard read a prayer for 1 hour. This liturgical rite was called the “Unfading Psalter.”

When reading the Indestructible Psalter, a person is remembered at each kathisma

The Indestructible Psalter is a special kind of prayer. It is read around the clock, without any breaks. To do this, the monks replace each other. The reading of the Indestructible Psalter should take place in an atmosphere of silence. It puts a person in a reverent mood and pacifies his soul.

Psalter. This is a collection of prayers and hymns to God

The Inexhaustible Psalter represents the rite of worship according to it.

After reading each part of the kathisma, the necessary prayers are said depending on what kind of memorial is being read - about health or repose. As a result, prayer for a person is offered day and night. This is a feature of this order of worship.

The parts of kathisma are called “Glory” and there are three of them in one kathisma. That is why, when reading the Indestructible Psalter, a person is remembered not once a day, but twenty. This is exactly how much kathisma is contained in the Psalter.

The text of the prayer “Glory” is as follows:

“Holy God, Holy Mighty, Holy Immortal, have mercy on us. (Read three times, with the sign of the cross and a bow from the waist.) Glory to the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, now and ever and unto ages of ages. Amen".

The indefatigable Psalter began to be read in the 4th - 5th centuries

The Psalter is one of the oldest books of the Bible. It was written in poetic language by King David. Texts taken from it are actively used in worship. Moreover, the psalms were read in ancient times. They are still being read.

The Indestructible Psalter is considered one of the varieties of cell monastic prayer. The time of its appearance is the IV-V century. It is usually read in monasteries throughout the day.

This idea, set out in the Holy Scriptures, prompted the Monk Alexander to introduce a new order of worship.

The book of Holy Scripture indicates that Angels praise the Lord continuously. They are in a constant state of prayer.

Just as the Angels praise the Lord, so do the monks during the reading of the Indestructible Psalter.

An ordinary person cannot do this. He will constantly be distracted by the bustle of the world. That is why only hermit monks living in Egypt and Palestine were able to get as close as possible to the angelic state. They read the Psalter in 24 hours.

The reading of the Unsleeping Psalter was introduced into the monastic charter in the 4th - 5th centuries by the abbot of the monastery of the “unsleeping” on the Euphrates, the Monk Alexander. This is discussed in his Life. The monk pondered the text of the first psalm for a long time. It starts like this:

“Blessed is the man who does not walk in the counsel of the wicked, and does not stand in the way of sinners, and does not sit in the seat of the wicked, but his will is in the law of the Lord, and on His law he meditates day and night!”

As a result, he concluded that man must continually abide in the Law of God. Only then will God's grace be with him. The Holy Spirit will empower a person to do this. That is why the holy abbot ordered the monks of his monastery to introduce into its charter the order of continuous reading of psalms.

St. Alexander, head of the monastery of the Unsleeping Ones

Since this was an unprecedented matter, the abbot for a long time did not dare to announce his decision to the brethren. He began to ask God for help.

He prayed for three years and one day the Lord said to him:

“Begin what you have planned - it pleases Me.”

That is why the monastery received the name “monastery of the Unsleeping.”

Saint Abbot Alexander developed and introduced the Inexhaustible Psalter into his monastery.

The monk also developed the rite of such worship. He divided the brethren into twenty-four lines, according to the number of hours in the day. As a result, the monks included in one of the sequences sang psalms for an hour. After this they were replaced by brothers from another line. They had to come to the place of duty in advance.

They sang David's psalms in the monastery. The singing took place in verses, in two faces. It was prescribed to sing them without haste, smoothly. Singing stopped only during regular church services. Thus, the monks turned to God around the clock.

After the Monk Alexander founded another monastery in Constantinople, the tradition began to spread among all Orthodox Christians. Currently, the rite of psalmody is used by Orthodox Christians all over the world.

The prayers from the Indestructible Psalter are read as follows: the first and second “Glory” are a prayer for the living, the third is for the repose. “Glory” means saying the prayer-doxology “Glory to the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit...”

Kathisma consists of three such exclamations, which divide the kathisma into parts. Kathismas are part of the 150 psalms that make up the Psalter. After each “Glory”, the reader of the prayer opens the memorial journals and lists the names of the people recorded in them.

The Psalter as a source of prayer for all needs

Because of their importance and depth, psalms permeate all Orthodox services. They can be read in their entirety, for example, at the sixth psalm, a special part of the morning service. Or individual verses in the so-called prokeimnas.

In addition, according to the Church Charter, the entire Psalter must be read in order within a week. During Lent - twice a week.

It is of great importance for a Christian to read the psalms in his home prayer rule. The Holy Fathers recommend reading the Psalter in various difficult life situations and emotional experiences.

As the holy righteous John of Kronstadt said:

“David’s divinely inspired songs lead everyone to prayer, devotion to God, praise and thanksgiving to God for everything; they enlighten, nourish, delight and strengthen the souls of believers; they drive away invisible enemies, heal spiritual passions, teach them to love God and keep His commandments, pray for everyone and constantly ascend to God; and their sweetness, their benefit for the souls of the pious is innumerable...”

The Holy Fathers combined the psalms into specific groups indicating the needs in which prayers help. Based on this, a Psalter was compiled for every need. For example, for humility of spirit it is useful to read Psalms 5, 27,43, 54, 78. And in illness, Psalms 29, 46 and 69 will become helpers for a Christian.

The Monk Arsenios of Cappadocia often used psalms to bless various deeds and needs. The Athonite elder Paisius the Svyatogorets brought this together into a single Psalter of St. Arseny. In it, in order, under each number of the psalm, the need for which it is blessed to be read is indicated.

Monks should read the prayer as devotees of God

In addition to monasteries, the Psalter is also read in churches. This is done in the intervals between the sermon and the celebration of the sacraments. In monasteries, services go on around the clock. That is why you can order a reading of the Indestructible Psalter here.
