The life story of Ksenia of Petersburg

The birth of the blessed one occurred in the years between 1719 and 1730; people do not know anything for certain about her early years. They recognized Ksenia when her great feat of love, patience and meekness began.

The beginning of foolishness was marked by the untimely death of Xenia’s husband, Andrei Fedorovich Petrov, who served as a singer in the court choir. He happened to die without repentance, and this shocked the poor woman so much that she decided to beg the Lord for mercy towards the deceased slave Andrei. And she was then 26 years old.

The young widow decided to renounce not only everything worldly that she owned, but also her own name, vowing to take the path of foolishness and put her life on the altar of love for the creator. Introducing herself by her husband’s name, putting on his clothes, she went out to the coffin and never took them off again. At first, her relatives created many obstacles, feeling sorry for her and loving her, thinking that Ksenia had gone crazy in grief. Ksenia, who never broke her vow from then on, seemed darkened in reason until the end of her life.

Great Service

Having distributed property, donated a house, and once went out into the street in her husband’s caftan on an ascetic journey, she never returned to her past life, and probably begged her husband for forgiveness from our creator, and a place in heaven. In heat and cold, in snowstorms and downpours, she tirelessly offered prayers and resignedly endured adversity.

In those years, the construction of a church at the Smolensk cemetery began, the walls were already raised high. At night, secretly from everyone, Ksenia lifted bricks up the stairs and laid them on the scaffolding. For a long time, builders were amazed, not knowing who was helping them. But later they found out that it was crazy Ksenia.

After some time, people began to notice the peculiarity of the holy fool, and rumors spread about her. After her husband’s clothes finally fell into disrepair and fell apart, Ksenia had to wear miserable rags, but it was always a red skirt and a green jacket, or, conversely, a green skirt and a red jacket. The presence of the Lord is felt more strongly there, she told people if they asked why she went there at night. Over time, they fell in love with her, offered shelter and warm clothes, but the blessed one did not take anything.

They began to notice that if the blessed one took something from a person, trouble soon awaited him. And vice versa, if Ksenia herself gave, it promised good luck and joy. Mothers tried to set up their children so that the blessed one would touch them and bless them, people offered services to the holy fool.

According to the chroniclers of that time, Ksenia led an ascetic life for about 45 years. She was buried in the Smolensk cemetery at the beginning of the nineteenth century. Saint Thaddeus is the apostle of mercy, the guardian of the disadvantaged, the poor and orphans, the distressed, offended and unjustly condemned. Almsgiving brings forgiveness for sins. She cleanses the sinner in the eyes of God and averts punishment. St. Gregory of Nazyaz writes: “The merciful have the key to the treasury of God’s blessings,” the Holy Apostle Peter says: “Love covers the magnitude of sins” (And Peter 4:8). “Water extinguishes a blazing fire, and alms resist sins,” affirms the Holy Spirit through the lips of the Lord the Sage. (enc. 33). “Help the poor, and you will find heaven,” calls St. Methodius. From the life of St. Tadeus we know that, in addition to his apostolic works, he also performed works of mercy. The above quotes from Holy Letters and the Fathers of the Church teach us how important mercy is to God. But what about those who themselves live in poverty, suffer from hunger and do not have the opportunity to give alms to others? The prophet Isaiah explains it this way: “When you give your bread to the hungry and satisfy the depressed soul, then your light will shine in the darkness, your darkness will be like the south” (Isaiah 58:10). After all, mercy and love for one’s neighbor applies not only to the body, but also to the soul. The most wretched person can say a kind word or console the distressed and offended. That is, if we are wealthy, we help the poor with alms, and if we ourselves are in a difficult financial situation, we bring a ray of hope and joy where darkness has reigned, and then our own soul will become “like the south, shining with the rays of the sun.”

Reverence

In Orthodoxy, the Apostle Judas Thaddeus is glorified on June 19 (July 2). Catholic Remembrance Day is October 28th.

Saint Jude is revered in Eastern and Western countries. A particle of the relics of the apostle is one of the main relics of the Etchmiadzin Monastery, the stronghold of the Armenian Apostolic Church. The Armenians handed over some of the remains to American Catholics; a piece of the saint’s forearm is kept in Chicago.

The Ukrainian Catholic Church also venerates the Apostle Thaddeus. A piece of it went to the Lviv Church of St. George, as well as the Greek Catholic Church of St. Andrew the First-Called and the Orthodox St. Elias Monastery in Odessa.

A church in Jordan was consecrated in honor of the apostle. Until 1934, the Cathedral of Saints Thaddeus and Bartholomew operated in Baku, which was subsequently destroyed. In Iran there is a monastery named after the Apostle. The monastery is abandoned, but on the day of remembrance of St. Jude, pilgrims gather in the main church and a festive service is held.

The saint has been immortalized in Western culture. El Greco’s painting “The Apostle Judas Thaddeus” is dedicated to the patron of the desperate.
