Yes, they are very important and significant, they are the temple of the soul, so the Lord often healed people, and this was one of His main works on earth. But, as we remember, during one of the healings He said to a man who had been motionless for a long time: “Behold, you have recovered; Sin no more, lest anything worse happen to you” (John 5:14). We also remember the healed lepers who lived outside the city and, having seen Christ, called out to Him with a prayer to heal them. But only one later returned to God to thank Him. Where did the other nine people return? – To your passions and affections. So only one ultimately received healing, which saved not only his body, but also his soul.
Of course, we must strive for the ideal. After all, we know that Christ was not sick because he had neither sinful thoughts nor passions. Although great ascetics also get sick. Cancer often progresses completely imperceptibly, and only when the whole body is affected, when it is too late to do anything from a medical point of view, then a person finds out everything. But this disease can bring great spiritual benefits. Many even call it affectionately: “shell”. There is also a proverb: “Cancer is not a fool—it takes you by the hand and leads you to heaven.” Oncology really makes it possible to slowly put everything in its place. Remove everything unnecessary, unnecessary, to which we are attached with a healthy body. The soul is eventually cleansed, and people are saved and return home.
There are often miraculous healings when medicine is completely powerless: a person is healed by tears of repentance, church sacraments, heartfelt prayers and God’s Providence. I know one woman from Georgia who was diagnosed with cancer at the most advanced, fourth stage. Not much of a believer yet, she came to Moscow. But even a very skilled doctor told her: “I can’t do anything anymore. Go to God.” By God's Providence she went into the monastery to visit the blessed Matronushka, stood next to her and left. And at night Matronushka appeared to her in a dream and said: “Why don’t you pray to me, why don’t you ask for healing?” And she says: “I don’t know Russian, and you don’t know Georgian, how can I pray to you?” Such is the simplicity. But now this woman is completely healthy, reveres Matronushka very much and never goes to the doctors. Because she went through all the doctors, but her main medicine was prayer.
When illness comes, you need to think about your lifestyle, about your relationship with God and people
Of course, we should want the body to be healthy. But now a person falls asleep spiritually, forgets himself and may die. The disease should be perceived as a kind of bell from Heaven: “Look, something is wrong with your soul, you may die. We need to put everything in order." Therefore, first of all, when illness comes, you need to try to think: “What did I do wrong?” You need to think about your way of life, about your relationship with God and people, repent of some of your sins and receive unction. Often this is sufficient.
Of course, we do not reject medicine either; among our saints there were doctors from God: St. Luke and Panteleimon. But a person sometimes thoughtlessly strives to have a healthy body. And for what? To enjoy some sinful earthly joys, to feed your sinful passions. He thinks like this: why should I live if I can’t eat tasty food, if I don’t have earthly pleasures? This is how people lived without God. And we remember Ancient Rome, when noble people even committed suicide if they could no longer indulge in carnal pleasures. But they didn't have God. When there is no idea of eternity, then a healthy body comes first, and this, of course, is terribly dangerous. That’s why the Lord allows illness so that we think about the soul.
We Christians must, first of all, think about the soul and not even strive by all means to get rid of the disease. From severe, fatal ones - yes, we must ask for healing, so that we can still live and have time to become better, to be cleansed in order to use the talent given to you by the Lord. The body is a donkey that is supposed to take us to heaven. And mild illnesses are often even spiritually beneficial. I can say this from my own experience. For example, the sin of gluttony torments you. And you pray, ask: “Lord, deliver!” And so the Lord sends a disease, not severe and non-fatal, that affects the digestion. When my pancreas got sick, the doctor said: “You need simple food. As they say: hunger, cold and peace.” I even smiled: this was exactly what I wanted. And why remove this disease? Let it be, because it gives me the opportunity not to fall into sin.
They say: “All diseases come from nerves.” What are nerves? This is pride, painful pride. We must learn humility and accept everything with gratitude from God: life, death, wealth, poverty, illness. And if there is this peaceful spirit, trust in God, then most likely there will be no illnesses. And if we begin to sin, fuss, get nervous, be afraid, then similar signals come. Therefore, the main medicine is the healing of our soul, the main doctor is, of course, the Lord, the Gospel, and doctors are the props. If we understand this, then we need to correct ourselves spiritually and take medicine.
