When and how to pray for the health of mothers

The basis of spiritual life for Orthodox Christians is the prayer rule. It contains a small request for the health of the parents. Addressed to the Lord. You need to read it from the prayer book, substituting the names of your mother and father. This is done every morning. Orthodox prayer helps in different cases:

  • makes the state of mind more joyful;
  • relieves physical pain and nervous stress;
  • speeds up the healing process during illness.

The frequency of prayer may vary, but at least once a day you must mention your mother before God. After all, even the biblical commandments say that you must honor your parents in order to be healthy and successful.

You can pray for your mother’s health in different ways - either use ready-made texts, or turn to the saints in your own words. The prayer itself can also be at home or in church. In cases where urgent help is needed, for example, so that a mother gets better faster, it is better to use church prayer.

  • Submit a health note for the Liturgy at the nearest church.
  • Order a magpie in your mother's name.
  • Order the Psalter about health from the monastery.
  • Serve a prayer service in the church - by agreement with the priest.

Of course, for all this, the woman must be baptized in the Orthodox Church.

Just don’t completely shift your responsibility onto someone else’s shoulders - you need to fully participate in the process, because a stranger will never be able to feel the same as you. A prayer for your mother should be imbued with emotions, sincere feelings and wishes for all the best. Then it will definitely work.

Prayers for the health of the mother should also be addressed to various saints. Quite often, many entrust their problems to Matrona of Moscow. She is known as a healer; thousands of people stand at the relics of the blessed one every day, waiting to receive help.

What is the place of health in our lives?

There is hardly a person who would say: “I really want to be sick.” It would seem natural to wish yourself and other people physical health. And, for example, if you ask a young mother what she wants for her child, she will first of all say: “The main thing is that he be healthy,” and may not mention anything else. But is it always useful to be healthy and pray for health? What place does health generally occupy in the hierarchy of Christian values?

“The disease should be taken as a call from Heaven”

Priest Lev Arshakyan , confessor of the Elvira Society for Social Support of the Deaf-Blind:

– The question posed concerns physical health, because there is also spiritual health. Physical health, of course, does not occupy the main place among Christian values, just like, for example, our clothing.

In general, the body is our temporary clothing, those leather vestments that we received. Yes, they are very important and significant, they are the temple of the soul, so the Lord often healed people, and this was one of His main works on earth. But, as we remember, during one of the healings He said to a man who had been motionless for a long time: “Behold, you have recovered; Sin no more, lest anything worse happen to you” (John 5:14). We also remember the healed lepers who lived outside the city and, having seen Christ, called out to Him with a prayer to heal them. But only one later returned to God to thank Him. Where did the other nine people return? – To your passions and affections. So only one ultimately received healing, which saved not only his body, but also his soul.

Of course, we must strive for the ideal. After all, we know that Christ was not sick because he had neither sinful thoughts nor passions. Although great ascetics also get sick. But these illnesses are not for sins, but for crowns, for receiving greater grace and greater gifts. The illnesses of saints and ascetics are a separate, special topic.

Priest Lev Arshakyan

In our case, illness can be perceived as healing the soul, like a kind of IV for a sick soul. For example, such a terrible disease as oncology. Cancer often progresses completely imperceptibly, and only when the whole body is affected, when it is too late to do anything from a medical point of view, then a person finds out everything. But this disease can bring great spiritual benefits. Many even call it affectionately: “shell”. There is also a proverb: “Cancer is not a fool—it takes you by the hand and leads you to heaven.” Oncology really makes it possible to slowly put everything in its place. Remove everything unnecessary, unnecessary, to which we are attached with a healthy body. The soul is eventually cleansed, and people are saved and return home.

There are often miraculous healings when medicine is completely powerless: a person is healed by tears of repentance, church sacraments, heartfelt prayers and God’s Providence. I know one woman from Georgia who was diagnosed with cancer at the most advanced, fourth stage. Not much of a believer yet, she came to Moscow. But even a very skilled doctor told her: “I can’t do anything anymore. Go to God.” By God's Providence she went into the monastery to visit the blessed Matronushka, stood next to her and left. And at night Matronushka appeared to her in a dream and said: “Why don’t you pray to me, why don’t you ask for healing?” And she says: “I don’t know Russian, and you don’t know Georgian, how can I pray to you?” Such is the simplicity. But now this woman is completely healthy, reveres Matronushka very much and never goes to the doctors. Because she went through all the doctors, but her main medicine was prayer.

When illness comes, you need to think about your lifestyle, about your relationship with God and people

Of course, we should want the body to be healthy. But now a person falls asleep spiritually, forgets himself and may die. The disease should be perceived as a kind of bell from Heaven: “Look, something is wrong with your soul, you may die. We need to put everything in order." Therefore, first of all, when illness comes, you need to try to think: “What did I do wrong?” You need to think about your way of life, about your relationship with God and people, repent of some of your sins and receive unction. Often this is sufficient.

Of course, we do not reject medicine either; among our saints there were doctors from God: St. Luke and Panteleimon. But a person sometimes thoughtlessly strives to have a healthy body. And for what? To enjoy some sinful earthly joys, to feed your sinful passions. He thinks like this: why should I live if I can’t eat tasty food, if I don’t have earthly pleasures? This is how people lived without God. And we remember Ancient Rome, when noble people even committed suicide if they could no longer indulge in carnal pleasures. But they didn't have God. When there is no idea of eternity, then a healthy body comes first, and this, of course, is terribly dangerous. That’s why the Lord allows illness so that we think about the soul.

We Christians must, first of all, think about the soul and not even strive by all means to get rid of the disease. From severe, fatal ones - yes, we must ask for healing, so that we can still live and have time to become better, to be cleansed in order to use the talent given to you by the Lord. The body is a donkey that is supposed to take us to heaven. And mild illnesses are often even spiritually beneficial. I can say this from my own experience. For example, the sin of gluttony torments you. And you pray, ask: “Lord, deliver!” And so the Lord sends a disease, not severe and non-fatal, that affects the digestion. When my pancreas got sick, the doctor said: “You need simple food. As they say: hunger, cold and peace.” I even smiled: this was exactly what I wanted. And why remove this disease? Let it be, because it gives me the opportunity not to fall into sin.

They say: “All diseases come from nerves.” What are nerves? This is pride, painful pride. We must learn humility and accept everything with gratitude from God: life, death, wealth, poverty, illness. And if there is this peaceful spirit, trust in God, then most likely there will be no illnesses. And if we begin to sin, fuss, get nervous, be afraid, then similar signals come. Therefore, the main medicine is the healing of our soul, the main doctor is, of course, the Lord, the Gospel, and doctors are the props. If we understand this, then we need to correct ourselves spiritually and take medicine.

“First of all, we must seek spiritual health”

Priest Dimitry Shishkin:

Priest Dimitry Shishkin

– The Lord, in His mercy, healed people, from which we can conclude that health, not illness, should be considered the norm. Another thing is that the state of health is often connected with our spiritual life and (as we know, again, from the words of the Savior) illness is a consequence of sin. But what can be said for sure is that health is not the highest value for a Christian, and many holy fathers say that illness is often sent to us not only as a consequence of certain sins, but also as a means of cleansing from sins and healing the soul . This is a paradoxical statement, but it is true. During a serious illness, a person either completely stops sinning, or, in any case, he is given a chance to think more responsibly and seriously about his life.

Enduring illness with patience, without grumbling and with gratitude is a mandatory rule of Christian life.

In addition, if a person endures his illness patiently, without grumbling and with gratitude, then the illness becomes for him an effective means of salvation. Illness, as it were, makes up for the lack of those blessed labors that every Christian must carry out, but from which, due to laziness, he avoids to one degree or another. In addition, illness teaches a person humility, unless the person himself opposes this science. And to the humble, as we know, the Lord gives grace. So it is good to wish each other health and ask the Lord for health and to be treated if you are sick, but also to endure illness with patience, without grumbling and with gratitude - this is also a mandatory rule of Christian life. Well, first of all, we need to look for spiritual health and take care of acquiring it, and it consists in a person’s agreement with God.

“Health is a great gift, but for salvation it is more useful for us to be sick”

Priest Valery Dukhanin:

– Imagine that you have been given a serious illness that prevents you from living normally, working, and communicating with your neighbors. Surely each of us will pray: “Lord, heal, save, if it is Your holy will.” When a person becomes seriously ill, then he understands how great a blessing health is. Therefore, we wish health to our dearest people, our children, and everyone we love.

Priest Valery Dukhanin

Health is an undoubted blessing. Like life, like the earthly joys given by God: family and children, a peaceful sky above your head, your favorite job and creativity. Well, health is God’s gift, so at the service we pray for the healing of the suffering and ailing.

Abba Isaiah the Hermit: “The body seeks health in order to distance itself from God”

The only trouble is that we turn God’s gift to our own detriment. For many, excellent health becomes, in a sense, a temptation; a person perceives life as an endless source of pleasure, which is in full swing, and such a person begins to squander his strength and abilities, waste his health on sin. Here is how Saint Tikhon of Zadonsk spoke about this: “The health of the body opens a person’s doors to many whims and sins, but closes the infirmity of the body.”

I remember from the patericon how Abba Isaiah the Hermit became very ill, almost came close to death, but when his disciple was saddened about this, Abba Isaiah uttered amazing words that we should all remember: “The body seeks health in order to move away from God."

It turns out to be a paradox: health is a great gift, but for our salvation it can be more useful for us to be sick. Until a person gets sick, he will not see that everything corporeal is fragile and unreliable, that the immortal soul is more important, which needs to be saved. One deacon he knew visited a person close to him, whose wife led a secular lifestyle and loved clothes and theaters. The moment came when she became very seriously ill and fell ill. Father Deacon visited her throughout her illness, until her death. He was amazed at the amazing changes that had taken place in her soul: during her illness, she became a deeply spiritual, prayerful and prudent person, so that it was no longer she who was being consoled, but she herself who was consoled.

We can say that health is a great value, but still not the most important, because there is nothing higher than the salvation of our immortal soul. Health is valuable only to the extent that it serves our salvation, our affirmation in goodness.

Prayer for the health of mother Matrona of Moscow

“Blessed Elder, Matrona of Moscow. It is with heartfelt sorrow that I turn to you. Grant me grace and heal my mother from a merciless illness. Ask the Lord God for mercy in remission of sin and do not torment us with severe trials. Let the ulcer heal, the wound heal, and the soul not suffer. Every day I trust in you and pray for blessed health. Thy will be done. Amen."

It is good to read the appeal near the shrine - for example, to find a temple where there is a particle of the incorruptible body of the righteous woman, but this is not necessary. If this opportunity does not present itself, it will be enough to purchase the image and install it at home. It is allowed to light candles nearby; this is done while reading the prayer text.

About healers of bodies

When preparing for any intervention, it is good to ask for the doctors performing the operation. This is significant because then their hands will be guided by the Lord himself.

You can pray in your own words. For example, like this:

“Lord, send your covering to me. And bless all the doctors who will participate in the operation. Manage the entire process, guide the hands of the doctors.”

Or use ready-made text:

“O Lord Almighty, Holy King, punish and do not kill, strengthen those who fall, and raise up those who are cast down, correct the afflictions of human beings, we pray to You, our God, visit Your weak servant (name) with Your mercy, forgive him (her) every sin, voluntary and involuntary. . To her, Lord, Thy healing power was sent down from Heaven to direct the mind and hand of Thy servant the doctor (name of the doctor) so that he would perform the necessary surgery safely, as if the bodily ailment of Thy free Servant (name) was completely healed, and every hostile invasion would be driven far away from him. Raise him from the bed of the Sick and grant him health in soul and body, pleasing Thy Church. Thou art the merciful God, and to Thee we send Glory to the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit, now and ever, and unto ages of ages. Amen."

Who else do they pray to so that mom doesn’t get sick?

You can also contact saints who have a reputation as healers:

  • Saint Panteleimon received an excellent education and was a doctor in the imperial palace. But he met a Christian mentor and received the power to resurrect the dead, after which he was baptized and was executed for his beliefs.
  • St. Luke (Voino-Yasenetsky) is a very talented scientist-surgeon, who at the same time became a bishop of the Orthodox Church. Saved thousands of lives during the Great Patriotic War and during the peace period. He prayed before every operation and did not betray his faith even after numerous exiles. He was buried at the place of his last service - in Crimea.
  • Martyr Tryphon - his prayers had special power; once the young man cast out demons from the king’s daughter. He made many Christians, which angered the emperor. The saint was brutally executed after prolonged torture, but died glorifying the Lord.
  • St. Cosmas and Damian were brothers raised in the Christian faith, they were trained in the work of healing. Since the young people believed in God, they believed that they could not charge for the talents He had given them. They helped everyone who wanted it just like that, in the name of Christ. By doing this, they made themselves envious - after all, other doctors were getting rich off the misfortune of others. They suffered at the hands of the killer, but even after death, healing continued at their grave.

Daughter's prayers for mother

The Lord blessed the creation of family ties so that people would support and care for each other. When a baby is born, it is the mother’s responsibility to care for him, educate him, and teach him the basics of Christianity. And when the time comes and the parents grow old, the children must, by God’s will, honor their relatives - even if the relationship is not entirely ideal.

A daughter’s prayer for her mother has special power - you should wish your loved one health and happiness every day. The texts can be pronounced either from the book or in words that come from the heart.

Strong prayer for mother's health

“Much merciful and all-merciful Lord! I am a sinful person and I do not understand how things should be, but You, Merciful One, enlighten me on how to act!”

Gratitude

You should sincerely thank Heavenly Father when the operating procedures are completed:

“I thank you, Lord, for allowing me to survive this difficult operation. Thank you for not sending me to the abyss of hell, for having mercy.”

There is such an offering of thanks upon completion of surgical interventions:

“Glory to Thee, Lord Jesus Christ, the Only Begotten Son of the Beginning Father, who alone heals every ailment and every disease among people, for You have had mercy on me as a sinner and delivered me from my illness, not allowing it to develop and kill me according to my sins. Grant me from now on, Master, the strength to firmly do Thy will for the salvation of my damned soul and for Thy glory with Thy Beginningless Father and Thy Consubstantial Spirit, now and ever and unto ages of ages. Amen."
