Nikola Studeny - history
The Monk Nicholas lived in the 9th century. At an early age, his parents sent him to Constantinople to live with his uncle, a monk at the Studite Monastery. After graduating from the monastery school, Nikolai took monastic vows. A few years later he received holy orders.
During the persecution of Christians in 813-820, St. Nicholas was repeatedly arrested, tortured and mocked. After the mother of the future Tsar Theodore Nicholas came to power, he was released from captivity. He returned to the monastery and became its abbot. Varda, who ascended the throne in 856, resumed persecution. Nikolai was forced to wander for seven years, then he was imprisoned again. After the change of power in 866, Nicholas again took up his post in the monastery.
For his open confession of the Christian faith and selflessness, the monk was awarded the gift of healing. After his death, in 868, his relics received this gift.
Memorial Day of Isidore of Pelusiot - history
Isidore of Pelusiot was a monk, the author of epistles and theological works. He grew up in a Christian family, and as a youth he went to the mountain, where he lived alone. Later, Isidore visited Constantinople, where John Chrysostom took him to study.
Isidore was known as one of the first confessors who began to correspond with like-minded people. He is remembered for writing a large number of messages in which he mentioned warriors, monarchs and high-ranking clergy. In his writings the monk criticized Arianism. Thousands of believers listened to Isidore's sermons. His death was peaceful.
What can all Orthodox Christians do on February 17?
- In the old days, on this day they looked after livestock, read protective prayers for them, hung amulets and amulets for animals in the chicken coop and barn so that wild animals would not attack.
- Women should pay attention to housework, that is, cleaning, washing, cooking, caring for pets and livestock.
- Men should also not spend this day in idleness. If the day turns out to be a non-working day, then the man can do household chores - repairs, rearranging furniture, helping his wife, but it is recommended to refuse work in the yard, on the street and places that are close to the forest, since at this time animals are very unpredictable and can severe frosts hit, which can cause colds and various diseases to strike a person who is hot from work.
- Healers pay special attention to treating the stomach and pancreas.
- A dream this night, especially clear and bright, can be prophetic and will come true within 20 days. The only condition is that you can’t tell anyone about it. You can talk about this dream only if you do not want it to come true, for example, if it was scary, depressing, and promises troubles and problems.
What not to do on February 17
- You cannot go on a long journey and go into the forest. This is due to two main ideas:
1. The first name of the holiday that takes place on this day is Nikola Studeny.
According to this idea, severe frosts may set in, which will take the traveler by surprise, where there is simply nowhere to hide. For the same reason, it is better to take warm clothes with you if you leave home for a long time. 2. The second name of the holiday even more eloquently indicates that it is better not to set foot in the forest. The “Wolf Matchmaker” holiday suggests that animals, especially wolves and foxes, are having weddings, predators, and even large herbivores, are very excited, and often there are battles between males for the female. It is better not to be seen by animals on this day, as they may regard a person as a rival or enemy, and then the one who disobeys the ban will simply suffer.
A hunter cannot go hunting in the forest. This ban applies to hunters both for the reasons described above and because it is very difficult to meet prey today. The animals are well hidden, their traces and presence are carefully hidden by Nikola Studeny, who will take the hunter in the other direction.
- You can’t wash yourself, cut your hair, cut your nails - it’s a bad omen for today, it’s better to postpone it to another day.
- You cannot spend the day in idleness and have a lot of fun - you will attract evil spirits, which will then not allow you to live. It's better to give all your attention to work.
- Women should not spend the day in idleness also for the reason that the husband will start walking.
- It’s better not to go outside once again, unless absolutely necessary, as the disease may stick.
- You cannot go to the bathhouse - on such a day the bathhouse owner will be angry at the presence of people, who can scald or perform other unpleasant pranks in order to drive people out of his habitat.
- You must not approach homeless or stray dogs. On the day of wolf weddings, they are completely unpredictable and can attack at any moment.
- You can’t wear red things - it’s an aggressive color that will attract troubles of all kinds, such as aggression from people and animals, and from evil spirits.
