Who is Sergius Sinaisky
On January 14/27, the Orthodox Church honors the memory of the Venerable Martyr Sergius of Sinai. Reverend means one who has become like God through his life. This was the name given to monks who renounced worldly life and spent time in prayer and labor for the glory of God.
Sergius of Sinai lived at the beginning of the 4th century in a cave on Mount Sinai - where the Old Testament Moses received the tablets with the 10 commandments from God. Together with other ascetics (there were 40 elders), he spent time in silence and prayer.
The elders' food was water and dates, and once a week they gathered for Holy Communion. Many monks received the gift from God to perform miracles.
In 312, Muslim Arabs attacked the Sinai monastery and brutally massacred the prayer books. Sergius of Sinai, with the rest of the elders, suffered martyrdom and was glorified with the rank of venerable martyr, as a monk who suffered torment for his faith in Christ.

Illustrious saints: life and spiritual achievement
- Sergius of Radonezh is a glorious son of the Russian land. He stood at the base of the Trinity-Sergius Lavra, calling for the militia against the Tatar-Mongol horde, blessing them for battle. Sergius was born to pious parents, and as a child he was an extremely quiet child, and learning was difficult. Overcoming the most difficult trials, he lived for two years in the forest in a log church, on the site of which the Trinity Monastery gradually appeared. Being its leader, he worked like a slave, exhausted from hunger. The reconciler of warring parties, the founder of more than four dozen monasteries and monasteries, performed many miracles, including the resurrection of a dead child. The Mother of God showed her face to him, promising him the protection of the Lavra forever. Sergius lived to a ripe old age and foresaw his departure in advance. A unique historical fact is that he was canonized during the lifetime of his disciples (others received this honor centuries later). Sergius came up with the idea of a monastic community, when all novices are equal and have no property. They turn to St. Sergius of Radonezh with a petition for deliverance from vanity, humility of pride, for the good education of children and students, for guidance and for health.
- Sergius of Valaam preached the adoption of Orthodox teachings in Karelia, displacing the Swedish Catholics, who forcefully propagated their beliefs. Together with his brother Herman they founded the Valaam Monastery. Under Sergius, the eldership was revived, and numerous monasteries were established on individual islands.
- Sergius Malopinezhsky was raised by his parents to honor God and love reading. From the age of thirty he served in the Malopinezhsky volost and died at the age of 92. His fame was established as a humble, selfless, kind presbyter. There is evidence of miracles that occurred at his grave.
- Sergius of Rome was a military leader. He was a secret Christian. This fact was discovered by denunciation. Then he was forced to bow to the idol, but he refused. He said he believed in Jesus. In women's clothes, together with their companion Bacchus, they were led around the city to the ridicule of the people with iron hoops around their necks. Bacchus died without renouncing his faith, and Sergius was taken to a neighboring city for execution. He walked in iron boots that were filled with nails. Sergius's head was cut off with a sword. He is one of the very first canonized saints.
Guardian Angel Sergius
The Orthodox Church distinguishes between such concepts as “saint, the heavenly patron of man” and “Guardian Angel”. A saint is a person who once lived on earth and bore a specific name. After repose, as the Orthodox Church teaches, God's saints receive the gift of helping those who live on earth and turn to him in prayer.
Saints named Sergius help everyone who turns to them with requests, but they provide special protection to their namesakes. Sometimes heavenly patrons are called angels - as a sign that they do not reside in the body, like earthly people, but lead a spiritual, angelic life.
We turn to them with the prayer: “Holy saint of God Sergius, pray to God for me, a sinner.” The day of veneration of the patron saint is the name day.
A completely different thing is the Guardian Angel, an initially spiritual, incorporeal entity that invisibly accompanies every person. It is not given to us to know his name, because it is not material.
It doesn’t matter what a person’s name is, his Guardian Angel mentally communicates with him, instructing him to do good. By evil deeds a person can offend and alienate an Angel - then dark entities - demons - will take power over him.
There are special prayers to the Guardian Angel: “Holy Angel, appear to my damned soul and passionate life; do not leave me for my intemperance, do not let the evil demon possess me...” As we see, the Guardian Angel is associated not with a person’s name, but with his soul - the one and only.
