Prayers before reading the Psalter

^ His, 8th

I am not pleased, Master Lord, may you come under the roof of my soul; but even though You, as the Lover of Mankind, want to live in me, I dare to approach; You command that I open the doors that You alone created, and come in with love for mankind, as you do, come into and enlighten my darkened thoughts.

I believe that you did this: you did not drive away the harlot who came to You with tears; below the publican you rejected you, having repented; below the thief, having known Thy Kingdom, Thou didst drive away; Below the persecutor, you left the repentant, who was born: but out of repentance you who came to you, in the person of your friends, you made all your friends, the only blessed one is always, now and to endless ages. Amen.

I am not worthy, Lord Lord, for You to enter under the roof of my soul. But since You, as a Lover of Mankind, want to live in me, I boldly begin. You command, and I will open the gates that You alone created, and You enter with Your inherent love for mankind, enter and enlighten my darkened mind.

I believe that You will do this. After all, You did not turn away from the harlot who came to You with tears; not a publican rejected the one who repented; I did not drive away the robber who recognized You as the King; neither the persecutor left the repentant as he was. But to all who came to You with repentance, You gave a place in the host of Your friends, the only Blessed One, always, now and forever. Amen.

^ Prayer of St. John Chrysostom

I believe, Lord, and I confess that You are truly the Christ, the Son of the living God, who came into the world to save sinners, from whom I am the first. I also believe that this is Your most pure Body, and this is Your most honest Blood.

I pray to You: have mercy on me, and forgive me my sins, voluntary and involuntary, in word, in deed, in knowledge and ignorance, and grant me uncondemned communion of the Lord. Your steadfast Sacraments, for the remission of sins, and for eternal life. Amen.

I believe, Lord, and confess that You are truly the Christ, the Son of the living God, who came into the world to save sinners, of whom I am the first. I also believe that this is Your most pure Body, and this is Your most precious Blood.

I pray to You: have mercy on me and forgive me my sins, voluntary and involuntary, committed in word, deed, consciously and out of ignorance, and grant me, without condemnation, to partake of Your most pure Sacraments, for the forgiveness of sins and eternal life. Amen.

^ Prayer 5, St. Basil the Great

We know, Lord, that I am unworthy to partake of Your most pure Body and Your honorable Blood, and I am guilty, and I judge myself to eat and drink, without discussing the Body and Blood of You, Christ and my God, but in response to Your bounties I boldly come to You, who said: eat my flesh and drink My blood, he abides in Me, and Az in him. Be merciful, O Lord, and do not expose me as a sinner, but deal with me according to Your mercy;

and may this holy light be unto me for healing, and purification, and enlightenment, and preservation, and salvation, and for the sanctification of soul and body; to drive away every dream, and evil deed, and the work of the devil, acting mentally in my lands, into boldness and love, even towards You; for the correction of life and affirmation, for the restoration of virtue and perfection; in fulfillment of the commandments, in communion with the Holy Spirit, in the guidance of the eternal life, in response to Thy Last Judgment: not into judgment or condemnation.

I know, Lord, that I unworthily partake of Your most pure Body and Your precious Blood, and I am guilty, and I eat and drink condemnation for myself, without distinguishing between Your Body and Blood, Christ and my God. But, boldly trusting in Your compassion, I come to You, who said: “He who eats My Flesh and drinks My Blood abides in Me, and I in him.” Have pity, Lord, and do not rebuke me, a sinner, but deal with me according to Your mercy.

And may these shrines be for me healing, and purification, and enlightenment, and preservation, and salvation, and for the sanctification of soul and body; to the elimination of every dream, and evil deed, and devilish influence, manifested through thoughts in my members; in boldness and love for You, in the correction and safety of life, in the growth of virtue and perfection, in the fulfillment of the commandments, in communion with the Holy Spirit, in guidance to eternal life, and in a favorable answer at Your terrible judgment - not in judgment or in condemnation.
