Another sign associated with September 30 said that if this day is warm, then the winter will be mild, and food and feed supplies will last until spring.

Saint Sophia of Rome, commemoration date: September 30

It was she, along with her three daughters Vera, Nadezhda and Lyubov, who lived in Rome. Saint Sophia was widowed at an early age and led a pious lifestyle. They never hid their Christian faith and professed it wherever possible. Over time, information about this family reached Emperor Hadrian, who ordered them to be brought to court.

Righteous Sophia and her children understood why they were called to the palace of the pagan ruler, and therefore fervently prayed to the Lord Jesus Christ. That is why, when they appeared before Adrian, they remained absolutely calm. The pagan urged each of them to renounce Christ and make a sacrifice to the goddess Artemis. However, the young virgins truly stood in faith. After that, he ordered them to be brutally tortured: they were thrown into a hot oven, into a cauldron with boiling oil, and burned on an iron grate. But the Lord preserved them, giving the martyrs strength. Each of them, in moments of severe torture, glorified Christ.

Saint Sophia was destined for a different fate: she had to watch how her children were tortured. Showing perseverance and courage, she encouraged her daughters to endure suffering for the sake of Christ. After much torture, the holy virgins were beheaded. Saint Sophia was able to take the bodies of her daughters and buried them on a high hill. She sat next to their graves for three days, and then went to the Lord. Since 777, their relics have been kept in the Church of Escho in Alsace.
