There is not such a large amount of information about the life of Saint Maron the Hermit of Syria. What is known is that what distinguished him from other monks was his acceptance of bloodless feats. Few people take such extreme measures, but with this step he simply once again confirmed his faith and devotion to the Lord.

Life of the Reverend

You can learn at least something about him only from manuscripts kept by those who lived with him at the same time and heard about his miracles. The life of the Monk Maron the Hermit of Syria took place in Syria. Not far from the Orontes River, he chose the top of a mountain, where there was an abandoned pagan temple, and began to live next to it. Since previous priests had made sacrifices there, he immediately consecrated that place and noted that from now on the Lord would be worshiped here.

Nearby he made a small hut, but not for himself at all, but for those who came to ask for his help. He had special respect for the virtue of Zevin and sent many to him for accepting the blessing. His last wish was that they be placed in the same coffin, but it was never fulfilled. He was assigned suddenly after a short illness.

Regarding the relics, an unpleasant situation arose. Initially, they were captured by residents of one village and dispersed all the others. They did not allow anyone near them, and that is why he was buried separately. They built a temple in his honor and introduced a holiday, which later became common. It falls on February 27th. Its fame led to the fact that they soon decided to erect a monastery on this site.

Maron the hermit what they pray for

Venerable Maron, Syrian Hermit

Maron the Hermit, Syrian (c. 433), venerable
Venerable Maron chose for himself the feat of living without covering. Having set this goal for himself, he climbed a mountain that was revered by the pagans (it was located near the city of Kirra in Syria, two days' journey from Antioch), found a temple there abandoned by the pagans, dedicated it to the true God and settled with him. He spent almost all his time in the open air - in prayer, vigil, labor and strict fasting. Although after some time he built a small hut for himself, he rarely used it, giving it up to the sick who came to him. During his godly life, Maron was granted the gift of healing by God: with the power of his prayer, he healed various diseases and cast out demons. The monk advised those who turned to him for edification to be abstinent, to take care of their salvation, and to beware of covetousness and anger. Saint Maron also founded many monasteries and instructed many monks who pleased God through the exploits of fasting. Among them are Saints Jacob the Hermit, Limnius and Domnina. Having suffered many different ailments, after a short illness the saint left this life and reposed in peace with the Lord in about 433 [1]

In old Russian books, the memory is entitled: “The Venerable Maron, the hermit of Syria, who delivers from fire and tremors.”
