Saint Anastasia the Patternmaker - life
At the end of the 3rd century, a daughter, Anastasia, was born into the family of the Roman senator Pretextatus. Her mother Fausta (or Favsta) was a Christian. From an early age, at the request of her mother, the teacher Chrysogon was involved in raising Anastasia. The girl grew up virtuous and merciful. However, by the will of her father, Anastasia became the wife of the pagan Publius.
At the turn of the 3rd - 4th centuries, the Roman Empire was ruled by Diocletian, an ardent opponent and persecutor of Christianity. Many Christian believers ended up in prison and died. Anastasia secretly visited prisoners, comforting them and providing assistance (carrying food, bandaging the wounded). When her husband found out about this, he severely beat his wife and locked her at home.
After some time, Publius went to Persia and drowned in the sea. Freed from domestic captivity, Anastasia began to serve people imprisoned with even greater zeal. She spiritually strengthened many in the upcoming trials. When her teacher Chrysogon was arrested and sent into exile, Anastasia followed him, helping him and other convicts in every possible way.
One day, having learned about the execution of people, she cried loudly, thereby revealing that she was a Christian. She was captured, but upon learning that Anastasia was from a noble family, they suggested that she renounce Christ. It was enough to simply make sacrifices to the pagan gods. She refused, and when trying to touch Anastasia, the pagan priest went blind. The saint was again free and continued her ministry.
After some time, she was imprisoned and tormented by hunger for two months. Seeing that Anastasia the Patternmaker did not receive any harm, she and the other convicts were put on a ship. The bottom of the ship was pierced to sink it into the sea. However, a miracle happened: the ship safely reached the shore. 120 prisoners, seeing the miraculous salvation, decided to be baptized.
Having learned about this, the ruler ordered everyone to be executed. Anastasia was stretched between four pillars and set on fire. According to legend, the saint's body was not burned. The pious Christian Apollinaria buried Anastasia. At the end of the 5th century, the body was transferred to Constantinople.
The Orthodox Church established the Day of Remembrance of Saint Anastasia the Pattern Maker on January 4 according to the new style.
