Lydia in art
Perhaps the oldest mention of Lydia in a literary work is the ode to Lydia by the Roman poet Horace. It is known that the poet was not married, but was known as a passionate man and had affairs with hetaeras. One of them was Lydia.

Lydia is also mentioned in the poems of other Soviet poets, for example, by Boris Kornilov:
The green edges were illuminated with gold again - how is your good renewal, my cheerful Lydia?
Boris Kornilov

Nikolai Oleinikov has an interesting quatrain:

An unusual role in the fate of the artist Henri Picasso was played by a woman named Lydia. A Russian emigrant (moreover, an orphan from Siberia) Lydia Delectorskaya simply came to find an advertisement as an assistant to the artist’s family, and later became his personal secretary and model. In many of Matisse's paintings you can recognize Lydia's characteristic face.
Henri Matisse often painted portraits of his young muse
Holy Martyr Larisa of Goth, commemoration date: April 8, New Age.
Her parents were Christians, and therefore the girl from a young age found love for God in her heart. But after the pagan Atanarikh came to power, a massive persecution of Christians began, even an ordinary visit to the temple became a life-threatening activity for believers.
But Saint Larisa, despite this, still attended services. One day, she went to the Liturgy, when she entered the temple, there were already 300 people there. The martyr stood near the entrance, because It was impossible to go deeper. But a moment later she was brought out of her prayerful state by a daring act committed by a pagan warrior.
He brought a cart into the temple on which was located a statue of a pagan idol. The warrior called on all Christians to bow to him, otherwise all believers would die. But for some reason the pagan took pity on the young and beautiful Christian Larisa, he told her to run away, because they would burn the temple. But the girl did not budge. She looked at all the people praying and decided to go deeper into prayer herself. Gradually, smoke began to fill the church, the fire destroyed the walls, and they collapsed, covering all the praying people, along with Saint Larisa.
First prayer to the righteous Angelina Despotissa of Serbia
Oh, Venerable Angelino, our kind and merciful mother, help us, your disobedient children. You are our good mother, you lived a sorrowful life on earth, but with the help of God, you bravely gained victories in battles and your soul joyfully dwelt in the light of the Kingdom of Heaven. Your home Church of Christ has been decorated and gilded by your holy husband Stephen and sons John and Maxim. You had a heart immeasurably large and compassionate towards everyone in trouble. Therefore, the pious Serbian people called you with the best of the words given by God - mother. As you are the mother of all of us, your Serbs, who, even if we have sinned a lot, still love and honor you and come to you for help.
What kind of mother would hate her children, even if they sin badly? No, but he punishes them wisely, but does not cease to love. Therefore, you, our good mother, punish us from heaven with the scourge of God, but do not leave us without your love. Punish us with the right hand of God's truth, and strengthen us with the right hand of love and return us from unrighteous paths to the path of truth and goodness.
We pray to you, good mother, with your prayers ask us for a heavenly blessing: for the sick health, for the weak strength, for the desperate hope, for the hungry daily bread, for the barren children, for the persecuted, shelter and comfort, and for all those who pray to you, grant what you ask for according to your great mercy. But grant us even more, our good mother, heavenly blessings that cleanse our souls, strengthen us in fulfilling the commandments of God, leading us to good and leading us away from all evil. For if we don’t run away from evil in this world, how can we run away from it in another world, if we don’t cleanse ourselves of dirt here, how can we there, where they look at what we carry from here.
Help us to die to this world, just as you were dead to the world, having desired the enduring and eternal good. Let our good be in heaven, so that our hearts may be in heaven, and not here, where everything rots and disappears, where the thief steals, and moth and rust decay. Even if we put all our strength into the blessings of this world, for a handful of earthly dust, we take it with us below, then you will not be able to help us, our good mother. Even if we work a little, although we cry out a little to the Lord through you, His heavenly bride, your help will pour out innumerable heavenly blessings, which will strengthen us on the narrow path of salvation, even if hundreds of deaths are presented to us.
Truly, our soul is completely torn by sins and poor in virtue, but the merciful Lord has prepared a remedy - repentance. May a small part of that true repentance be born in us, which you, our holy mother, brought to the Lord. Revive the divine in our souls with your warm tears, which you pour out every day for the Serbian race, so that we understand the abyss of our debts before God, He forgives our debts if we sincerely and tearfully ask Him for forgiveness.
Also, have mercy, our mother Angelino, holy abbess of Krushedol, and help us to be saved from all evil, so that one day, through your prayers to the Lord, we may enter the peace of the Kingdom of Heaven, where everyone gratefully glorifies the Holy Consubstantial and Indivisible Trinity, the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, now and ever and ever. Amen.
Patron Saint of the name - Lydia of Illyria
The woman's husband occupied a high position at the court of the Roman emperor Hadrian (117-138). Lydia herself took care of the house and raised two sons. Life in the family was built on love for one's neighbor and faith in Christ. But it was possible to talk about this only inside one’s home, since Christianity was severely punished at that time.
However, one of the dignitaries, who disliked Lydia’s husband, told the emperor about his faith. Then Adrian exiled the entire family to Illyria for execution. During the torture, Lydia saw the outline of an angel in the window, who said that she, her husband and sons would face a test, God would not leave their legs. That's exactly what happened. Twice the cauldron of boiling oil cooled down at the moment when all family members were to be thrown into it. Even the executioner himself believed in the miracle, as did everyone present at the execution.
Lydia's name day, which is celebrated on April 5, is also the day of remembrance of Saint Lydia of Illyria. She is revered in both the Orthodox and Catholic churches.
Saint Philetus was a noble sa-nov-nik at the court of go-ni-te-la chri-sti-an im-per-ra-to-ra Adri-a-na (117-138) . For the discovery of faith in Christ the Savior, Saint Philetus and his wife, Saint Li-di-ey, and son-no-vya-mi, saints Ma-ke-don-nom and Fe-o-pre-pi-em, appeared before the court. According to the order of Adri-a-na, Saint Philetus and his family were sent to Il-li-ria to the vo-e-na-chal-ni-ku Am-fi-lo -hiyu, so that he would subject them to the is-for-no-holes. He ordered to hang them on the tree and whittle their bodies. After this, mu-che-ni-kov was locked in the same place, together with the confidence of the head of the Kro-ni prison -house. But an Angel appeared to them and strengthened them against their suffering. The next day the flour was put into a cauldron with boiling oil, but the oil cooled instantly -lo, and the saints remained unharmed. Chief Am-fi-lo-hiy was so amazed by this miracle that he believed in Christ and himself entered the boiling mass -lo with a prayer: “Lord, Jesus Christ, help me!” - and remained alive. The same torture was repeated when the emperor Adri-an arrived in Ill-ria. The holy men were thrown into boiling oil again and again, and they remained alive by the power of God .
We advise you to study the Ten Commandments of God and their meaning
The shameful im-per-ra-tor returned to Rome, and the holy mar-ty began to bless and glorify worship God and in prayer offer your holy souls to Him († c. 117-138).

Lydia Illyrian, mts. — life There are two versions of the saint’s biography: 1. The life of Saint Lydia, the first European Christian Saint Lydia was born in the 1st century in the city of Thyatira, located in Asia Minor, and at first she was an idolater, later accepting the Jewish faith. She lived in Philippi (now Kavala in Greece) with her family and led a pious lifestyle. She was engaged in selling porphyry from Phrygia for dyeing luxurious fabrics. At that time, St. Apostle Paul came to the city preaching about the risen Christ. When Lydia heard him, she believed in the Savior with all her pure heart and asked the Apostle Paul to baptize her without delay. In the year 50, in Philippi, Paul baptized the first Christian of Greece, and therefore of Europe, Lydia, in the Zygakt River. After the Sacrament was performed, Saint Lydia invited the Apostle Paul and his companions, Luke and Silas, to stay and live in her house for the entire time they were in Philippi. The apostles rejected her proposal, but Saint Lydia insisted, and her requests
Miracles during execution
The soldiers Amphilochius and the prison warden Kronidas were present at the execution. The knives and spears could not harm the saints; the Lord showed great power to everyone present. Many of the soldiers believed, and so did the prison governor. All newly-made Christians were thrown into prison, and a new warden was appointed.
At night, an Angel visited the martyrs, warned them that they would soon suffer torment, and strengthened them. Amphilochius prepared a cauldron for the Christians in which oil was boiling. People were thrown into this instrument of torture, but the boiling immediately stopped, and they, remaining unharmed, loudly praised God.
The military leader was speechless from such a miracle and believed. This event was reported to the emperor. Adrian immediately rushed to Illyria and demanded that the execution be attempted again. Now the former bloodthirsty military leader joined Saint Lydia and the other martyrs. With angelic meekness he endured pokes and beatings from the soldiers who had recently obeyed him. Amphilochius entered the boiling oil with a prayer on his lips. The martyrs were thrown into a cauldron of hot oil over and over again, but by the power of God there was no damage to their bodies.
The emperor, powerless, returned back to Rome, unable to execute anyone. The holy martyr Lydia, her husband and sons prayed with the new brothers in Christ and with a smile on their lips gave their souls to God, receiving crowns.
Origin of the name
The modern name Lydia comes from the ancient Greek name Λυδία, which denoted a resident of the country of the same name in Asia Minor. Now the lands that once belonged to the Lydians are part of the modern Turkish Republic, and the name Lydia is common in many European languages. The name Lydia came to our culture along with Christianity, but still remained quite rare until the 20th century.
Finnish artist Albert Edelfelt depicted the poet and his lover in the painting “Horace and Lydia”
WHAT DO PRAYERS IN FRONT OF THE ICON OF SAINT LYDIA HELP WITH?
The Orthodox icon of the holy martyr Lydia personifies the image of humility and devotion. St. Lydia lived in Rome in the 2nd century. She was a loving wife and caring mother. The whole family lived in prosperity and prosperity: her husband held an important post at the court of Emperor Hadrian, and she herself took care of the house and raised two children. All family members were Christians.
Saint Lydia is depicted in the icon with a cross in her hand, like all the martyrs, since one day, following the denunciation of an envious dignitary, her entire family was captured and interrogated by the emperor. Everyone confessed that they believed in Christ. Not wanting to make public the fact that a Christian served at court, the emperor sent the entire family to his military leader Amphilochius in the region of Illyria for reprisals. Amphilochius first ordered everyone to be hung on a tree and their skin cut off with knives, and at night he threw them into prison. There the saint prayed and an Angel appeared to the family, strengthening them in the faith. The next day the torture continued. The whole family was thrown into a cauldron of boiling oil. But as soon as this happened, the oil instantly cooled down. Shocked, Amphilochius believed in Christ and freed the holy family. Having learned about this, the emperor himself came and, not believing what had happened, ordered the boiler to be heated for a week. After this period, not only the family of St. Lydia, but also Amphilochius. And again the miracle happened: those thrown into the cauldron remained unharmed. Frustrated, Adrian returned to Rome, and the saints began to pray and thank the Lord, and soon their souls went to Him in peace and tranquility. The holy woman did not renounce Christ even under torture and fear of death, and faith gave her hope of salvation. Russian Orthodox Icons of Lydia can often be seen in icon shops.

Life of a saint
Memorial Day: April 5
Today, the icon depicting Lydia of Illyria is in the homes of many Christians; it helps believers in many sorrows. Sincere words of prayer to the martyr Lydia can preserve well-being in the family .
The severe torment that befell this brave woman and her family, who believed in Christ during the times of severe persecution against representatives of this faith, is a vivid example of what feats a person who has chosen the righteous path is capable of. Emperor Hadrian, who hated Christians, ordered Lydia and her husband and sons to be brutally tortured so that they would renounce the Lord. They skinned them alive and threw them into a cauldron of boiling oil, but the Lord did not abandon them and helped them endure unbearable torment, relieving the pain and giving them hope.
The resilience of Lydia’s family and her loved ones amazed even the military commander Amphilochius, who led the torture, and he himself believed in Christ. The souls of the martyrs went to the Lord in peace - at night an angel descended from heaven to them and strengthened their spirit.

Saint Lydia of Illyria is venerated by the Orthodox Church along with her husband Philetus, children Macedon and Theoprepius, as well as martyrs Kronidas and Amphilochius. Saints' Day is celebrated on April 5th. Art. All of them suffered for the faith of Christ in the first half of the 2nd century during the reign of the Roman Emperor Hadrian.
Lydia, according to legend as told by Dmitry of Rostov, belonged to a noble family. Her husband served at the emperor's court and was a member of his synclit (council). The couple adhered to the Christian faith and raised their children in this faith.
During the persecution of Christians following a denunciation, Lydia and her family were brought to trial before the ruler in accordance with the edict of Emperor Hadrian, according to which Christians could be put to death as a result of even a formal denunciation and by the decision of the court that followed it. The wise answers of the Christian family members and their steadfastness in faith amazed the judges.
The former imperial adviser with his wife and children was sent for execution to the Roman province of Illyria, which was located on the eastern coast of the Adriatic Sea.
We recommend studying Psalm 13
Here, by order of the military leader Amphilochius, Saint Lydia, Philetus, and their children Macedon and Theoprepius were subjected to cruel torture. The martyrs were hung from a tree and tortured with knives, beaten with iron rods, and then thrown into prison.
The head of the prison, Kronid, was imprisoned along with a Christian family for believing in Christ when he saw the saving power of faith during the execution of Lydia and her relatives. At night, the exhausted prisoners found relief in prayer.
An angel appeared to them and encouraged them spiritually, calling them to be strong in faith.
In the morning, Saint Lydia and her fellow Christians were thrown into a cauldron of boiling oil. Amphilochius expected the prisoners to die, but a miracle happened. According to legend, the oil suddenly became cold. The martyrs were saved by God's power through their unyielding faith. The pagan commander immediately recognized the existence of the One God and, with a prayer addressed to Him, stepped into the boiling oil and came out of it unharmed.
The emperor left for the capital, unable to break the will of the Christians. The Holy Martyr Lydia and those who suffered with her thanked God and in prayers they gave up their souls to Him.
This happened between 117 and 138 (according to other sources, in 129).

Execution and miracles
Adrian could not convince the spouses and their children to abandon the Orthodox faith; they were ready to suffer for Christ. Then the emperor sent them to Illyria. This country was located in what is today Bosnia and Herzegovina, on the eastern side of the Adriatic coast.
In Illyria, the prisoners were met by the military leader Amphilochius, even more cruel than the pagan emperor. The torturer did not talk to them and ask them to come to their senses; this was not the first time he executed Christians and his hands were covered in blood up to his shoulders.
Amphilochius ordered his subordinates to hang Saint Lydia on a tree and cut off pieces from her body, as if whittling them. The same fate befell Philetus, and then Macedon and Theoprepius.

Icon of Saint Galina
The name Galina translated from Greek means “calm, serene,” but the life of the holy martyr Galina of Corinth was not calm and serene. She accomplished her feat of faith in the 3rd century; Some sources indicate the years 250-251, others indicate the year 258.
Galina's birthplace was the city of Corinth in the Greek province of Achaia, the largest after Athens, where the Apostle Paul once spread the Christian faith. A dramatic change in Galina’s life occurred after meeting the righteous elder Kondraty, thanks to which she converted to the true faith. It’s worth saying something special about him.
About the Holy Martyr Kondratiy
His mother, Christian Rufina, was forced to leave Corinth due to persecution for her faith. Finding refuge in the mountains, she gave birth to a son and named him Kodrat. Soon after the birth of the child, Rufina died, and the child miraculously escaped and spent all his childhood and youth in the desert. Having once met Christians, he was imbued with the teachings of Christ.
Kodrat studied medicine a lot and became a good doctor, but spent more time in solitude, in the mountains, praying and thinking about God
Many followers flocked to him, listening attentively to his instructions. One of them was Galina
Galina Korinthskaya's feat of faith
The persecution of adherents of the true faith did not stop. The Roman Emperor Decius sent his military leader Jason to Corinth to either return Christians to faith in pagan gods or destroy them.
The holy elder Kodrat was captured and thrown into prison along with his disciples. Galina was also captured and, together with her fellow believers, subjected to terrible torture, but she, like others, did not renounce the true faith. Then Jason ordered wild animals to be set on the righteous, but the animals did not touch them.
Enraged, Jason ordered them to be tied by their feet to chariots and dragged in this form through the entire city, while a crowd of pagans standing along the road threw stones at them. When the martyrs finally found themselves outside the city, where they were to be executed, they asked for only one thing - to be allowed to pray to the Lord. After the prayer, they took turns humbly approaching the executioner, who cut off their heads with a sword, and where the holy innocent blood was shed, a pure spring gushed out as an eternal reminder to the inhabitants of Corinth about the innocent righteous killed.
We advise you to study Why does the Lord take away grace from a person?
Galina, along with other wives, followers and students of Saint Kodrat, could have hidden even before prison, but chose to voluntarily go to torment for the sake of the Lord. According to one legend, all the holy women were beheaded; according to another, they were thrown into the sea along with Codratus’s disciple Leonidas, but they did not go to the bottom, but straight through the water, singing praises to Jesus. Then the Roman soldiers boarded the ship, caught up with the righteous women and drowned them, hanging stones on their necks.
The meaning of the icon of the Great Martyr Galina
Quite a few women bear the name Galina, and each of them must certainly have an icon of “Saint Galina” - this is their heavenly patroness, intercessor and first helper. But this does not mean at all that this icon protects only those who are baptized with this name.
They pray to Saint Galina to overcome their spiritual infirmities, to grant them perseverance and courage, to maintain firmness in their faith and their spiritual convictions.
Prayer before the icon of the “Holy Martyr Galina” makes us realize how incomparable the feat of this and other saints who laid down their lives for the true faith is with the insignificant sacrifice that is required of us today: to pray and keep fasts, while their lives were completely dedicated to the Lord, and the soul was always immersed in a state of prayer.

After the prayer invocation, the troparion is read to the holy martyr Galina

Characteristics and influence of the name
Calmness, poise and openness are the main characteristics of this girl. If you need someone to listen to you and give you wise advice, then no one can do it better than Lydia. Her whole life revolves around communicating with people. But sometimes, realizing that she is an authority for those around her, Lydia begins to consider her point of view the only correct one. However, she is quite wise to stop the growth of her ego in time and begin to listen to others again.
Most of the time, Lydia is in a good mood - and she easily transmits it to others. Left alone, she never sits idle, but always finds something useful to do.
Professions, business and career
Based on Lydia’s inclination to communicate, she can choose activities related to communication. This could be any service industry. The ideal option would be to open your own small business - for example, an antique store, an exclusive clothing boutique, a tour desk - and communicate with clients yourself. After all, Lydia is very capable of correctly guessing the needs and needs of people.
With all of the above, Lydia may also be suitable for a job that does not require a lot of contact with people. If an activity truly captivates her, Lydia plunges into it headlong, without being distracted by external factors - even if it is small and painstaking work that will seem incredibly boring to an outside observer. Scientific activities and working with data require a fair amount of perseverance, and Lydia has plenty of it.
Love, sexuality, marriage
Lydia is not inclined to dramatize: being a realist, she does not idealize her chosen one, which means she is not subject to that disappointment in her partner that all girls experience when they take off their rose-colored glasses. Married relationships most often work out well. Family always comes first for Lydia - she is quite capable of leaving a good job in order to devote more time to her family.

Prayers to Saint Lyudmila
Saints help and patronize in a variety of matters: in personal life, at work, in illness and grief. But there are saints who patronize travelers, the lost, wives, children and even grandmothers. The patroness of the latter, Saint Lyudmila, has been known for more than a thousand years; people ask her for their children and grandchildren.
The story of the holy martyr Lyudmila of Czechia
The couple, Prince Borivoy and Lyudmila, were the first rulers of Bohemia, the historical name of the Czech Republic, to receive Baptism, this happened in 882. The princely family was familiar with Saints Methodius and Cyril, educators and creators of the Slavic alphabet. Under their influence, Christianity began to spread throughout the Czech land. Lyudmila accepted the Christian faith as an adult. This was a conscious and balanced decision, so the prayer to St. Ludmila of Bohemia is read to repent of sins or unclean thoughts.
Just a few years after Baptism, the prince died, and his son Vratislav ascended the throne. Lyudmila devoted all her strength to caring for children and eradicating paganism. She prayed to God for her children and grandchildren and taught them love for the Lord. Unfortunately, paganism still lived in the West, especially in those places where Dragomira, the wife of Prince Vratislav, grew up. The new princess pretended to be a Christian, but always remained faithful to the pagan gods. After the death of her husband, Dragomira took the throne and first set about returning pagan customs and foundations. Lyudmila's influence was not enough to resist Dragomira, so she insisted on transferring the throne to the son of Vratislav and Dragomira. At the age of 18, Vyacheslav became the Prince of Bohemia, raised by his grandmother, he again called people to Christianity.

The story didn't end there. Dragomira could not bear such a blow; with all her heart she hated Lyudmila. The elderly princess went to the city of Techin, hoping to avoid the wrath of her daughter-in-law. Lyudmila’s life ended in the chapel, where she was strangled by killers hired by Dragomira. Crowds came to the grave of the martyr in Techin, where they prayed for their children and grandchildren. The people's love for the deceased caused fear in Dragomira, so she erected a chapel of St. Archangel Michael at the grave so that people would attribute miraculous properties to her. And yet they continued to come to prayer precisely to the grave of Saint Lyudmila. Some time later, Prince Vyacheslav moved his grandmother’s grave to the Church of St. George in Prague.
How does prayer to Saint Lyudmila help?
First of all, the saint is known as the patroness and intercessor of children and grandchildren. They pray to Lyudmila for their family, asking to guide their children on the true path, to help them with their choices and in troubles.
The Orthodox prayer to Saint Lyudmila should be said from a pure heart and only with good intentions. A sincere request for his grandchildren will definitely be heard by the saint, because it is not for nothing that the name of Vyacheslav is mentioned in the prayer to Lyudmila of Czechoslovakia.
The martyr is asked for repentance and mercy as a servant of Christ. The prayer of the saint will help drive away sinful thoughts and strengthen faith.

The daughter of Prince George of Albania and the wife of Stephen, King of Serbia, Saint Angelina suffered exile under the Turks (15th century) together with her husband, and shared all the difficulties of life in Albania and Italy. She raised her two sons, saints Maxim and John, in a truly Christian spirit. After the death of her husband, having taken monastic vows, Saint Angelina devoted herself to prayer, charity and church building. A faithful wife, a kind mother and a perfect Christian, she truly deserved the name “Mother Angelina”, which the Serbian people awarded her. Her miraculous relics are preserved along with the relics of her righteous husband, Saint Stephen, and their pious children Maxim and John in the Krushedol Monastery.
Saint Angelina is a prayerful patroness in the organization of family life, in family needs and sorrows, in the pious upbringing of children; wives and mothers pray to her for the granting of the virtues of marriage and motherhood.
