Entrance. Prokeimenon for the day and readings.

Acts of the Apostle reading (chapter 4):

In those days, speaking as an apostle to the people, the priests and the ecclesiastical commanders and the Sadducees came upon them to teach them and to proclaim the resurrection of the dead about Jesus; and laid his hands on them and kept them until the morning :/ It was already evening./ And many of those who heard the word believed:/ And the number of the men was as many as five thousand./ And in the morning their prince, and the elder, and the scribe, were gathered together in Jerusalem:/ And Anne ar Hieras, and Caiaphas, and John , and Alexander,/ and the elders, born from the family of the bishop./ And, having placed them in the midst, he asked:/ by what power, or in what name will you do these things?/ Then Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit, spoke to them:/ the princes of mankind and the elders of Israel ,/ even though today we are tormented because of the good deeds of man who is weak,/ by this we have been saved,/ be wise to all of you and to all the people of Israel,/ for in the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth,/ whom you crucified ,/ Whom God raised from the dead,/ oh This one stands before you healthy./ This is the stone rooted from you who built it,/ which is the cornerstone,/ and there is no other salvation;/ there is no other name under heaven, given among men,/ it befits me save us.

Acts of the Apostle reading (chapter 4):

In those days, when the Jews saw the boldness of Peter and John, and understood that man was unlearned and simple, I marveled, and I knew them as if they were best with Jesus; your man standing with him, / nothing to the name against the decision. / Commanded but I am going out from the crowd, / I am vying with each other, saying: / What shall we do to this man? / For a deliberate sign came to Ima, / to all who live in Jerusalem, / and we cannot turn away squeezing;/ but let it not spread among people any more ,/ let us rebuke him and forbid him from speaking about this name not to one of man./ And having called them,/ commanded him not to preach at all, but to teach below about the name of Jesus./ Peter and John, from speaking to them, rest:/ if it is righteous is there before God / who should listen to you more than God? / Judge: we cannot, even though we have seen and heard, not speak. / But they, having forbidden them, let me go, / will find nothing better than to torment them , for the sake of people, / as I all glorified God about the past:/ since there were many more than fourty of those people,/ then this miracle of healing happened.

Acts of the Apostle reading (chapter 6-7):

In those days, Stephen was filled with faith and power, working signs and great wonders among the people. The netsy rose up from the host of the verbs of Livertinsk and Kyrineisk and Alexandrsk, and others from Cilicia and Asia, contending with Stefan. And I can’t go against the grain of wisdom and the Spirit, which is the verb. Then the men who spoke were silent, because they heard him speaking blasphemous words against Moses and against God. The people and the elders and the scribes moved him, and they attacked him and brought him to the assembly, and he set up false witnesses, saying that this man does not cease speaking blasphemous words. Put this holy place and the law in its place. I hear him saying that this Jesus of Nazareth will destroy this place and change the customs that Moses handed over to us. And all those sitting in the congregation looked up, seeing his face like the face of an Angel. The bishop said: is this really the essence? He said: O men, brothers and fathers, listen. The God of glory appeared to our father Abraham, who was in Mesopotamia, before he even dwelt in Haran, and said to him: come out from your land and from your kindred and from your father’s house, and come to this I wish I could show you. Then he came out from the land of the Chaldeans and settled in Haran, and from there, after the death of his father, you brought him to this land, in which you now live, and you did not give him an inheritance in it, not even one foot down. Solomon built a temple for Him. But the Most High does not live in churches made with hands, like the prophet who says: Heaven is My throne, but the earth is My footstool. What temple will you build for Me, says the Lord, or what place will I rest for Me? Was it not My hand that created all this? Cruel and uncircumcised hearts and ears, you always resist the Holy Spirit, just as your fathers did, so do you. Whom did your fathers not drive out from the prophet? And having killed the one who foretold the coming of the Righteous One, Whom you are now a traitor and murderer, even though you accepted the law by the dispensation of the angels and did not keep it. Hearing this, my hearts swelled and I gnashed my teeth. The Stefan is the back of the soul of the Holy, a view of the glory of God and Jesus standing to the exposure of the god, and the speech: I see the heaven and the son of a man of a man of the deposit of the standing of the standing of God. He cried out with a great voice, stopped his ears and rushed with one accord, and went outside the city, stoning him, and the witness took off his robe and laid it at the foot of the young man of the queen. imago Saul, and stoned Stephen, praying and saying: Lord Jesus, receive my spirit. Bow your knees and cry with a great voice: Lord, do not place this sin on them. And this river was successful.

At the litia of the stichera of the temple and the saints, tone 1:

The all-honorable cross has invincible power/ strengthens you in your struggle,/ to Saint Benjamin and the Venerable Martyr Sergius,/ to the martyrs Saints Yuri and John, quickly chosen, like the faithful servant Christ Vi,/ the glorious confessor of the four,/ in the image of the four-pointed Cross of the Lord,/ sanctifying the ends of the universe .

Martyrs of the four, innocently murdered, / blessed is the city that receives your body, / and the earth that is watered with your blood, / for you, who loved Christ with all your heart, / even to death, return to Him who remained in nature. / Now, from the faces of the new martyrs and Confessors to the Church of Russia / To the throne of the Holy Trinity that is forthcoming, / Offer up your prayers to God, / May he preserve the city and our country in peace and unanimity / And deliver us from the repression of His righteous One.

Glory, the same voice:

When the tormentors of godlessness betrayed you to death,/ you, Saint Benjamin,/ protected yourself with the sign of the cross/ and you offered a prayer of thanksgiving to God./ You, Venerable Martyr Sergius,/ sighing prayerfully for all your enemies, you cried out:/ forgive them , God, They don’t know what they’re doing./ Together with them, you, martyrs John and Yurie,/ having despised the fear of death,/ courageously flowed towards suffering naturally/. Now, holy ones, abiding in the glory of Heaven, / with the faces of the angels you glorify the Holy Trinity.

And now, Mother of God, the same voice:

Behold, Isaiah’s prophecy was fulfilled: / The virgin gave birth to you / and after Christmas, as before Christmas, you abided, / God was born, and so also the nature was newly cut off. / But, O Mother of God, / Thy prayers their servants, / in Your temple offered to You , do not despise, / but as you bear Your kindly hand, / have mercy on Your servants, / and pray for the salvation of our souls.

On the verse there are stichera, tone 2.

Similar to: Where from the Tree:

When the false shepherd of wickedness/ seized the power of the church and scattered the verbal flock at will,/ then you did not turn to flight,/ the valiant bishop Benjamin,/ and the helm of the ship of the church,/ which the Lord, and not man, entrusted to you,/ in You have not betrayed the hands of strangers, / but you have shown yourself to be a good shepherd, / laying down your life for your sheep.

Verse: Your priesthood will be clothed with righteousness/ and your worship will rejoice.

When you excommunicated the apostates, rejecting church traditions / and introducing new customs, / from the Holy Church, / then you, Saint Benjamin, / were betrayed by those in the hands of the godless, / who unjustly condemned you to death. / For this reason, you were adorned with the crown of martyrdom / and you have found heavenly treasures, / the bright beauty of our city.

Verse: Honorable before the Lord is the death of His like.

When the torment of godlessness/ the flatterers rebuke you in fear/ and struggle to subdue your will,/ then, the hierarch above all,/ you are inflamed with zeal for God,/ you put on the armor of truth/ and, unshakably demonstrating the firmness of your faith,/ you accepted martyrdom,/ to faithful people showing an image of patience.

Glory, the same voice:

I am leading you to the lawless judgment, / all the faithful on the hills of Peter’s city / I am bringing you, passion-bearing saint Benjamin, / and, in the tenderness of my heart, I bend my knee, / with tears I sing the church hymn: / save, God Lord, Thy people.

And now, the same voice:

You are the protection of my powers,/ the tripartite Cross of Christ:/ sanctify me by your power,/ for with faith and love I worship and glorify you.

At the blessing of the bread, the saint’s troparion twice, tone 1:

You appeared as an all-bright lamp in the city of St. Peter,/ you appeared to the good shepherd, Hieromartyr Father Benjamin./ You planted love and mercy in the hearts of the faithful,/ you called for charity while enduring for those who suffer hunger and poverty./ For this reason we also come running to you/ and cry out to you in faith: / pray to the Merciful God, / to establish our fatherland in Orthodoxy and piety, / to grant peace to the Church, / and great mercy to our souls.

And the troparion of the Cross, tone 1:

Save, O Lord, Thy people,/ and bless Thy inheritance,/ granting victories to Orthodox Christians against the enemy,/ and preserving Thy life through Thy Cross.

Song 1

Irmos: Having passed through water like dry land,/ and having escaped the evil of Egypt,/ the Israeli cried out:/ Let us drink to our Deliverer and our God.

Chorus: Holy Martyr Benjamin, pray to God for us.

From your youth you loved Christ with all your heart,/ you deigned to walk the angelic path,/ remaining in tireless prayers,/ you offered a spiritual sacrifice to the God, Saint Benjamin.

As a loving father of children, you appeared to many:/ the poor and the orphaned, the strange and wretched, those burdened with sins and in troubles and illnesses,/ you healed their contrition and wounds,/ Benjamin is more compassionate and more glorious.

You extended your right hand of help to those who were overcome by the disease of drunkenness, / thereby preaching abstinence and establishing life in Christ for those, / most of all, showing an image of meekness and mercy, to Benjamin the most praiseworthy.

Theotokos: You, the All-Pure One, will find You, the most honorable of all creatures, / the Creator and God of all will be incarnate from You, / the providential one will restore the fallen Adam.

Song 3

Irmos: The Supreme Creator of the heavenly circle, O Lord,/ and the Creator of the Church,/ You confirm me in Your love,/ the desires of the land, the true affirmation,/ The only one who loves mankind.

Without laziness, instructing your flock with the word of the Gospel, Saint Benjamin,/ you laid down your soul for the people all the days./ For this reason, you were glorified by God,/ as a worthy bishop of the city of Saint Peter.

For the sake of love for God, you submitted to poverty freely, O Archpastor of Petrograd, / even so, in the days of fierce trials, Christ granted you the grace not only to believe in Him, / but also to suffer for Him.

Showing diligence about the services of God,/ in prayers and vigils you constantly remained with your flock,/ defending the temples of the Lord from desecration,/ you established the Orthodox brotherhood, O most glorious Benjamin.

Theotokos: Purity and virginity to the chosen vessel/ and the Son of God, honorable village,/ the Most Immaculate Lady, come, faithful ones, with hymns we will worthily honor.

Sedalen, voice 4:

They do not put a candle lit in secret,/ but in the candlestick, the Lord speaks./ So, having been enlightened by the light of your virtues, Father Benjamin,/ the people of the Russian Church,/ who today honor your holy memory gloriously.

Glory, and now, the Cross, the same voice.

Similar to: Ascension :

The bright sky appears more than the sun with the light of the Godfather/ enlightens every dawn with its dawn./ Moreover, You, O Lover of mankind, Savior of all,/ enlighten our minds for the sake of it and feelings:/ we are the imams of that weapon for us ru, invincible victory.

Song 4

Irmos: You are my Fortress, Lord, / You are my strength, / You are my God, You are my joy, / do not leave the bosom of the Father, / and visit our poverty. / Thus, with the prophet Habakkuk, I call to You: / Glory to Your strength, Lover of mankind.

You fearlessly strengthened those who were persecuted and tormented, / but you meekly admonished the persecutors and tormentors, / not being afraid of those reproaches, O Saint Benjamin of Christ, / standing firm in the midst of all the slander of the enemy.

You unswervingly walked the path of Christ’s righteousness/ and you guided your flock, O god-wise Benjamin, onto the path of salvation, saying:/ it is fitting to lay down your soul for Christ even to the point of death.

It was not possible for wickedness to overcome the strength of your soul/ and the firmness of your confession to overcome, most wonderful martyr,/ for you, bearing in your heart the victorious sign of the Cross,/ you boldly affirmed the faith of Christ.

Theotokos: Oh, Unartful Virgin!/ You remained a Virgin at Christmas/ and after the Nativity you appeared as an Ever-Virgin./ With those silent voices we magnify You, the Lady.

Song 5

Irmos: Enlighten us with Your commandments, O Lord,/ and with Your high arm/ Grant us Your peace,/ Lover of mankind.

The Lord loves the generous giver, / You cried in your heart, O saint who loves the poor, / Moreover, having unceasing care for the suffering, / You taught the faithful to give alms generously.

Sick with love for those who are hungry,/ you brought a warm prayer to the Most Pure Mother of God/ and a robe from Her honorable image/ like a voluntary sacrifice, you gave to those in need.

When the time of fierce turmoil and the uprising of the godless came,/ you wisely restrained people from bloodshed./ You slandered thee with wickedness, confessor of Christ,/ repaying you with evil for good.

Theotokos: Oh, Mother of God, who gave birth to the All-Good Word!/Heal the embitterment of my soul/and direct me to the path of repentance.

Song 6

Irmos: I will pour out my prayer to the Lord/ and to Him I will proclaim my sorrows/ for my soul is filled with evil/ and my belly is drawing near to hell,/ and I pray like Jonah:/ from aphids, O God, lift me up.

When apostates of wickedness, / rejecting church traditions and flatteringly introducing innovations, took up arms against you, / then you, God-wise Benjamin, did not falsely teach / how to live in the house of God, / which is the Church of God Alive, the pillar and affirmation of the Truth.

Always the apostates from faith with lies and slander skewers of the Tel/ and in the rudder of the sinners of the betray,/ you, the holy, like the true servant of Christ, in the faith, the meek, he knocked out:/ the radiator is Christ, there is all the end of all the ends from his own and the stranger.

Standing before the tormentors at the trial, / you testified to the truth of God, the saint, saying: / we do not know what you tell us, / whether we should live or die. / Otherwise, I will lift up my eyes to grief and a river: / for all, Lord, glory to you.

Theotokos: The voice of the Archangel Gabriel, All-Immaculate Virgin, we now offer to You:/ Rejoice, O Gracious One, the Lord is with You.

Kontakion, tone 6:

From my youth I held the cross of Christ on my frame,/ the true guardian of the Orthodox Church appeared,/ to the Hieromartyr Benjamin./ Slander, chains, spitting, and unjust judgment/ from the lawless you bravely endured I, / you did not give up the church shrine to desecration. / Likewise, Christ was given for free Fill you with patience and love, / before your martyrdom, / cry out with gratitude: / for everything, Lord, glory to you.

Ikos:

Show the Lord, O holy Father Benjamin,/ a great adornment to our city,/ a wondrous representative for your people,/ a true witness of the righteousness of God,/ a guide to the lost,/ love and the rule of meekness,/ a shining lamp in the darkness of sin,/ a bold martyr,/ a confessor steadfast, / the unshakable pillar of our Church, / and His faithful servant, who says: / for all, Lord, glory to Thee.

Song 7

Irmos: The youths came from Judea/ to Babylon at times,/ by the faith of the Trinity the flames of the cave were quenched, singing:/ God of the fathers, blessed art thou.

From your youth, desiring to join in the feat of the holy passion-bearers,/ you drank the cup of suffering, O Saint Benjamin./ The Lord also crowned you with a crown of martyrdom, crying out:/ Blessed are you, O Lord God, forever ki.

I was tormented by internal struggles in prison, / you completely surrendered to the will of God, the good martyr, / and, filled with Heavenly peace, like the youths in the cave of Babylon, you sang: / Blessed are you, O Lord, God, in all things ki.

In this prison,/ the cup of suffering that was prepared for you, you drank to the end, O most glorious martyr,/ and, having received great consolations and inexpressible joy from the Holy Spirit,/ you cried out in good victory:/ Blessed are you, O Lord God, forever.

Theotokos: Highest of the Heavenly powers, One from the ages you have appeared, O Mother of God, / for you have given birth to the Creator and Creator of all things, indescribably, / All-pure Lady.

Song 8

Irmos: The Heavenly King/ Whom all the Angels sing/ Praise and extol for all ages.

You have edified the shepherds of the Church of Christ, the wise bishop, / that they may place all their trust in God and arm themselves with unshakable faith, / for our Savior will preserve His Church unbreakable until the end of the age.

Christ is our Life, Light and Peace, / with Him and in prison there is goodness to be, / herein you instructed your flock, St. Benjamin, / and you prepared them for suffering, crying: / Sing to the Lord and exalt to all ages.

It is not I who save the Church, but by Her I am saved, / so you humbly thought, O Hieromartyr Benjamin. / For this reason, you were in no way afraid of the fate of the Bride of Christ, crying out: / Sing to the Lords and extol in all the eyelids.

Theotokos: Rod from the root of Jesse, the Virgin, you were, / the color of Christ, the Giver of Life, who has grown, / giving grace to all who cry: / bless, all the works of the Lord, the Lord.

Song 9

Irmos: Truly the Mother of God,/ We confess Thee,/ saved by Thee, O Pure Virgin,/ with the Bodiless faces magnifying Thee.

Let us not disgrace the Orthodox faith and our hope, / which is the hope of eternal blessings, / with these words you strengthened your flock in persecution, O Saint Benjamin, / fulfilling your ministry even to death.

Preparing courageously to accept death,/ you strengthened your fellow sufferers/ and, enduring everything with gratitude,/ you blessed your tormentors, O patient Benjamin.

May the word of the apostle be fulfilled in your suffering, O four-numbered martyrs, / for neither sorrow, nor persecution, neither present nor future, / will be able to separate the faithful from the love of God. / For this reason we please you.

Theotokos: You, who unartfully gave birth to the Giver of Life and the Savior, / We truly confess the Mother of God and pray diligently, / deliver us from all sorrow and illness through Your prayers, Mother of the Virgin.

Luminous:

You will be in a world of sorrow, / but be of good cheer, for I have overcome the world, says the Lord with His disciples. / You, the righteous bishop, have kept this covenant of Christ well, / and you have risen victoriously into the the ancient palaces of the Kingdom of Heaven.

Glory, and now, of the Cross:

The cross is celebrated and the world is sanctified, / the angels sing for us for the sake of the Crucified One, / and they triumph with us and rejoice, calling David: / she has brought salvation in the middle of the earth, Master.

On the praises of the stichera, tone 8:

Hieromartyr Benjamin, true son of the Church of Christ/ and a zealous zealot for Her blessings/ against the false shepherds trying to plunder your flock,/ you became courageous/ and, not afraid of the reproaches and false testimony of the tormentors,/ you turned judgment on the head of those who judged you,/ even by your death. You have established Orthodoxy./ For this reason we diligently please you.

Not with the words of weaving, / nor with the wisdom of man, / but more than with simplicity and truth, / your sermon, hierarchically most worthy, was filled with speed, / reaching the depths of the heart, / and strengthening the right faith in people. / For this reason, as it is true shepherd, / all of you with love we honor.

Burning with the spirit of evangelical love/ and sick for your flock,/ you visited the homes of the suffering and wretched/ and, instructing many on the path of truth,/ you brought into the church fence./ Likewise, thee, holy Father Benjamin,/ as a good shepherd and a faithful mentor ,/ we reverence with love and piety.

Slander from lawless men, / unjust judgment and betrayal of false brethren, / you bravely endured, / Hieromartyr Benjamin, / you also accepted death for Christ / and you were honored with a high lot. / For this reason, with love, We read you/ and we honor your memory.

Glory, voice 6:

Come, faithful ones, let us form a vigil, / triumphantly and glorifying God, / in memory of the four new martyrs: / Saint Benjamin and Sergius the Martyr, / together with the good-victorious martyrs Yuri and John, / these, who defend the Church of Christ, / without shrinking from sorrow, / without fear prisons / and, like lambs of kindness, they accepted death. / Now in the joy of the saints they stand / and pray to the Triune God / for our earthly fatherland.

And now, the Cross, the same voice:

The voice of prophecy proclaimed the Holy Tree, / from which Adam was freed from the ancient oaths of death, / but the creature today lifts up its voice, / even asking rich mercies from God. / But eat Thou art in good grace, Immeasurable Master,/ bring us purification/ and save our souls.

Prayer

Oh, chosen servant of Christ, Hieromartyr Benjamin, unshakable pillar of the Russian Church, good vegetation and red fruit of our land, representative and mentor of your flock! During the persecution of the godless, you brought forth your saving confession of the Orthodox faith from the treasury of your soul, and the good shepherd appeared to the faithful people of the city of St. Peter, your soul laying down the sheep for Christ and His sake, driving away the fierce wolves far away, showing compassion and affirming brotherly love. Let us accept Christ in our hearts; in the midst of the storms of life, you have kept heartfelt prayer and peace of mind. Now look down on us, your unworthy children, who call upon you with a tender soul and a contrite heart. Confirm us in the holy faith, teach us to always do the will of God and keep the commandments of the church. Be the rule of our faith as a shepherd, a spiritual leader as a warrior, a great doctor for the sick, a comforter for the sad, an intercessor for the persecuted, a mentor for the youth, a compassionate father for all and a warm prayer-maker, as may our Fatherland and your city be preserved in Orthodoxy through your prayers, and may your name be constantly glorified in them The Holy Trinity, the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit forever and ever. Amen.

The meaning of the name Benjamin

The name Benjamin "בִּנְיָמִן" is Hebrew in origin. It is found in the Old Testament in the book of Genesis. Benjamin was the name of the ancestor of one of the twelve tribes of Israel, the youngest son of Joseph and Rachel. Contrary to the will of the dying Rachel, who named the baby born in agony Benoni (“son of sorrows”), Jacob gave him another name - Benjamin. Literally it is translated as “son of the right hand”, “son of the right hand”, in a figurative sense the meaning is closer to “son of happiness”, “son of my old age”, “beloved”. The name Veniamin was not popular in Russia. The meaning of a church, monastic name was assigned to it. This is indirectly confirmed by statistical data. Although the name Benjamin was one of the hundred most popular names in the country, throughout almost the entire 20th century, according to researchers, it did not leave eighty-ninth place on the list. In 1931, experts recorded the peak in popularity of the name, but even then there were no more than eight per 10,000 newborns with the name Benjamin. It is a completely different matter in Europe and America, where the name Veniamini (Benjamin) is popular to this day.

In Germany, Benjamin is common in the abbreviated form - Ben. It is often the first of two names given to boys (eg Ben Luca) and is the most popular name in Germany today. In England and the USA, the name Benjamin has not left the top twenty most popular names for more than a century.
