Archangel

- the highest angel, messenger of God. In cinema and stories, three archangels are most often mentioned: Michael, Gabriel, Raphael. But if you turn to religious literature, you can find references to a larger number of Archangels. In the Orthodox Church, Archangels are most often mentioned with the names: Michael, Gabriel, Raphael, Uriel, Selaphiel, Yehudiel, Barachiel, Jeremiel, Sikhail, Zadkiel, Samuel, Jophiel. These names are also mentioned in other religions.

History of creation

But, before considering the question of the names of angels, you need to understand who these unearthly beings are.

From Greek, the name of these incorporeal entities is translated as “messenger”; the same root can be found in the name of the holy book of Christians - the Gospel, which means “good news”. Such executors of God's will were created even before the appearance of the entire material world. This can be stated on the basis of an episode from the Old Testament, which says that the angels began to praise the Creator when he created the heavenly stars.

Thus, since this act preceded the appearance of the Earth and everything that is on it, we can confidently say that this happened before the creation of man.

The existence of angels and their various activities are discussed in both the New and Old Testaments. In particular, the Revelation of the Prophet Isaiah tells how this saint saw the Lord God surrounded by angels of various ranks.

Vision of the Prophet Isaiah

This book of the Old Testament does not mention the names of the angels who were surrounded by the throne of the Lord, but some ranks of these creatures are named. Also, the works of some theologians say that there are only three ranks of angels, each of them has three varieties. Among these types of unearthly beings one can name such as thrones, angels, archangels, powers, authorities, and so on. Each of these groups has its own individual purpose. The revelation of the prophet says that the archangels closest to the throne of the Lord continually praise His name.

The literary creation of the ancient saint is also notable for the fact that it reveals the reason for God’s creation of man and other corporeal and incorporeal beings. The Almighty created the Universe and everything in it out of an excess of love. He needed to send his grace to someone. Therefore, He created the Universe, the Earth, and ultimately man.

Before creating our planet, the Creator said: “Yes, there will be heaven!”, and it appeared. Some theologians say that this passage from the Old Testament should be understood in such a way that the Creator created the invisible world before making everything that we can perceive with our senses. This is indicated in the Holy Scriptures by the word “heaven”. Angels can also be considered invisible entities, whose names are almost never mentioned in the Bible, except for a few belonging to the highest level of the hierarchy.

Thus, in Orthodoxy nine archangels are revered. Four of them are mentioned in the books of the Old and New Testaments, the rest can only be learned from the sacred tradition of the Orthodox Church. The most famous of them are Michael and Gabriel. The first of those named is the archangel, that is, the commander-in-chief of the entire heavenly army. For this reason, the question often found on the Internet about how to find out the name of an angel by date of birth is not entirely justified, since these names are not named in the holy books. However, in Russia, this concept usually means something else, namely, the heavenly patron saint. Several chapters of this article will be devoted to this phenomenon. Now it is worth considering the question of why the Lord created the invisible world, including the angelic world.

Throne of the Most High

The book of the prophet Isaiah says that the Lord sits on a throne, which is guarded by archangels who constantly sing His glory. This throne, in turn, is supported by His mighty hand. Macarius the Great interprets this fragment from the holy book as follows.

The Lord is in constant communication with His creation: the archangels and angels, sitting on a throne supported by them, but at the same time His hand serves as a support for this throne with all its surroundings. This also suggests that the Creator needs to give his love to everything created. Angels and archangels support the throne on which He sits, but the Lord himself at the same time does not leave them without his care and constantly takes care of them, providing assistance.

In the same work, in the description of the structure of the Kingdom of God, there are such unusual creatures as a lion with a fiery mane and an ox whose whole body is covered with eyes. These two animals are also constantly accompanied by an eagle. Many interpreters say that these animals from the Creator’s retinue are also heavenly angels. These characters are well known to admirers of Boris Grebenshchikov’s work, since it was this work of spiritual literature that formed the basis for the plot of the song “City” from the repertoire of the Aquarium group.

There are numerous iconographic and other images of angels, in which artists presented the main characters of their works not as humanoid creatures, but in a more fantastic guise. Often these servants of the Almighty, just like the ox described above, are covered with many pairs of eyes. This unusual detail of the appearance of the Lord God’s helpers symbolizes their wisdom and ability to see aspects of life hidden from the eyes of mere mortals. This feature also speaks of the boundless devotion of angels to their heavenly creator, since all their eyes are constantly directed towards him.

In your own image and likeness

Many believers are interested in the question of how to identify a guardian angel by name in Orthodoxy. Such curious people should be upset, because the Holy Scripture says that only the Lord knows about the essence of heavenly beings. Ordinary mortal people are not given the opportunity to know their intercessors by name.

Scripture reveals only a small part of how the world invisible to human eyes works. However, in these books there are references to nine angels belonging to the highest legion, including such as Michael, Gabriel, Uriel. If your name matches these, then you can safely consider one of these representatives of the heavenly army to be your intercessor.

As is known, the Creator created man in his own image and likeness, but this should not be taken literally that people are the only begotten of God and their body is like the flesh of the heavenly father. This is wrong. The words about image and likeness should be understood a little differently. Usually, when interpreting this episode of scripture, the holy fathers say that the Creator in this case manifested himself as an artist who draws a certain person, but his portrait is still not a complete copy of the original.

All people are essentially material beings, that is, made of flesh. It is interesting that angels, whose names many believers seek to find out by their date of birth, are also described by many theologians as created beings, that is, consisting of flesh.

Other hierarchies

I mentioned earlier that there are several hierarchies of angels. Although I have chosen to work with the Nine Angelic Orders, I would not like to discard Jewish mysticism. The Kabbalah mentions ten sephiroth (the singular number is sephira). Each represents its own world, which requires deep exploration through imaginary journeys, personal encounters with the divine, etc. Angels are present in each sephira. The names of the sephiroth are Foundation, Splendor, Eternity, Beauty, Power, Grace, Knowledge, Wisdom, Understanding and Perfection (Crown). The diagram representing these forces is in the form of a tree. At the roots of this tree stands the guardian angel Sandalphon, who spreads through the tree and goes out into the Universe. Other angels on the tree are Safkiel, the angel of contemplation; Raphael, divine physician; Gabriel, who rules spiritual wisdom; Michael, commander-in-chief of the heavenly army. At the top is Metatron. We will discuss all of these angels in the book.

How to understand words about the incorporeality of angels

This definition can be interpreted in such a way that such creatures are incorporeal in relation to people. That is, their bodies are much thinner than those of mere mortals. They are so different from human flesh that they are invisible to the human eye. However, in the full sense of the word, angels are not incorporeal. The only non-created being is the Lord God.

Orthodox angels, whose names are mostly unknown to mere mortals, were created by the Creator to act as intermediaries between him and the world of people. The Old Testament contains numerous cases when such creatures appeared before a person. It is interesting that many prophets described them not as creatures that resembled humans in appearance, but as something completely different: sometimes like a wheel of fire, sometimes like a bush, and so on.

As for the Gospel, it describes angels only as humanoid creatures. Almost all such episodes from the New Testament are associated with telling people some important news. Thus, the angel who appeared before the Most Holy Theotokos told her about the imminent appearance of the Savior. The same heavenly messenger also met the myrrh-bearing women, informing them of the resurrection of Christ.

Speaking about the essence of these celestials, it is worth mentioning that they have a much more developed intellect than people. However, the crown of God's creation is considered to be man, for whose connection with God the angels are intended.

Fallen angels

As has already been said in this article, the heavenly army appeared even before the birth of humanity. It is also worth mentioning that the first creatures to sin against the Lord God were also angels. The Creator endowed them, just like humans, with free will and developed intelligence. Chief among them was a warrior named Lucifer. But this representative of the invisible world became proud of his perfection and decided that he could compare in his power with the Lord God himself and even surpass Him.

For this, the proud creature was cast into hell along with all his brothers, who, at his instigation, also rebelled against their Creator. However, most of the heavenly lord's retinue remained faithful to him and did not retreat from their master. Subsequently, a grandiose battle took place between the fallen angels and the warriors of light, in which the servants of the Lord God won. Those who transgressed the will of the Creator were cast out of heaven and imprisoned in hell. Now their leader, Lucifer, began to be called the devil or Satan, while the rest of his associates received the title of demons. The names of demons and their characteristics are almost unknown to people, with the exception of the leader of this fallen race.

Opposites of Angels

The scripture mentions that just as angels are called to serve the Lord for the benefit of people, so demons are constantly trying to cause evil to the human race. The first precedent of such intervention in the life of God's creation is described in the first chapters of the Old Testament, which tell of the temptation of Eve by the serpent, who was none other than the devil, who appeared to the woman in the form of an animal.

However, it is worth saying that these creatures, just like angels, do not have any power over people. This means that without the will of the Lord God they cannot harm a person. This can be confirmed by an example from the Holy Scriptures. This book contains an episode about how demons, expelled from a person, wanted to go out into a herd of pigs, but could not do this without the permission of the Lord God. Therefore, they began to beg the Creator to allow them to do this. When God gave his consent, they inhabited the animals, after which the entire herd rushed from a high cliff.

Therefore, a person should not be afraid of these creatures, because if he has firm faith in his Heavenly Father, then the demons will not be able to cause him any harm.

If he doubts, and the intention to live according to God’s law is not strong, then he may find himself engulfed by tormenting demons, manifesting themselves as various passions, that is, human sins that torment the soul of people. If we turn to Russian classical literature, an example of such lack of faith can be found in Nikolai Vasilyevich Gogol’s story “Viy”. The main character of this work, seminarian Khoma, was killed by evil spirits precisely because he had lost hope in the Lord God and His intercession.

Many are concerned with the question of why the Almighty, who foresaw the fall of the first people, did not save them from this step. The fact is that He created man, giving him free will. Thus, the Creator, knowing that the first people would deviate from the rules, did not violate their free will. He does his best to ensure that man gradually returns to his original state, changing his fallen nature.

Ranks of higher beings

The Holy Society follows a clear distribution of rights and responsibilities. The messengers do not know meanness, they do not want to set up the highest rank. Their existence is filled with harmony, which proves the wisdom of God and his higher nature.

The angelic hierarchy consists of nine ranks, divided into the highest, middle and lowest triads.

First triad

This includes heavenly creatures who are as close to God as possible. They are admitted to the holy secrets of the universe. Ranks of the highest angels:

  1. Seraphim are six-winged creatures who revere their creator. They convey their love to people, making them want to confess, inspiring them to believe.
  2. Cherubim honor the mind and wisdom of God, and guard great secrets with their wings. They do not tolerate interference in higher affairs, they preach faith, and people’s excessive curiosity for sacred knowledge makes them jealous. They became guardians of the tree of life after the expulsion of Adam and Eve.
  3. Thrones exalt the greatness and glory of God, conveying to humanity his omniscience and justice. Reminds us of the need to maintain hierarchy.

Second triad

List of representatives of the Middle Sphere:

  1. Dominions celebrate God's caring nature, his ability to protect everyone. They instill self-confidence in people, foster a desire to develop, and limit the craving for sin.
  2. The powers admire the power and skill of God and teach him to honor his capabilities.
  3. The authorities control the devil, help people resist temptations and find faith.

Third triad

Representatives of this rank are closer to the human world. It includes:

  1. The principles govern the universe and monitor the performance of the lower angels. They help in structuring society and observing the will of God. Rule over the elements.
  2. Archangels convey good news and teach people to keep covenants. They have access to prophecies. Heavenly creatures help you get back on the right path.
  3. Angels are the creatures closest to people. They give strength to move towards enlightenment, protect against excesses and dangers, and instill faith.

About guardian angels

As has already been said in previous chapters, the Lord created numerous angels so that they would help Him in the salvation of Christians.

It was also mentioned in previous chapters that there are different angelic positions. So, among other representatives of these incorporeal beings, guardian angels, unknown to anyone by name, are especially close to people, due to their attachment to this or that person. Every person has such a patron, but not from birth, as many believe. It is “assigned” to him at the moment of baptism.

This assistant stays with the person under his care all his life, guiding him on the true path of salvation. The presence of such a heavenly intercessor is spoken of in every baptized person, including in the Gospel in the words of Jesus Christ himself. He mentions that the angel of each of the children is close to God the Father.

Image and attributes

The heavenly creature looks like a young man of unusual appearance, with wings behind his back. The creatures were dressed in light linen robes intertwined with gold belts.

Most angels have two wings, the exceptions being the six-winged Seraphim and the four-fingered Cherubim.

The image of higher creatures is filled with symbols:

  • wings signify speed and the ability to be everywhere;
  • the staff means the ability to convey the will of God;
  • the mirror represents knowledge about future events;
  • gold ribbons in the hair symbolize submission to God, connection with him;
  • the third eye is a sign of the ability to know about everything;
  • The halo symbolizes grace, special energy;
  • beautiful appearance means the perfection of angels, their highest harmony.

Special features are added to the appearance of creatures that correspond to their mission. Raphael was depicted with medicines, Gabriel with a branch of paradise, and Michael with a spear.

Guardian Angel Mission

Such a creature is assigned to a person in order to help his soul to be saved. However, a Christian, through his actions, can either strengthen his connection with a guardian angel, whose name is unknown to him, or break it. The first can be achieved if you lead a life worthy of a true Christian, fight your vices and offer a prayer to the Lord God for salvation.

If a person who received a guardian angel at baptism moves away from the church, leads an ungodly lifestyle, and so on, then his guardian angel ceases to serve him, since the Christian himself expresses his desire to do so.

However, if the sinner returns to a righteous life, then the heavenly protector again begins to assist him.

Name day

Not a single Christian knows the name of his heavenly intercessor. Moreover, the overwhelming number of people have never seen their heavenly intercessor throughout their entire lives. However, this does not mean that caring for a Christian has ceased. The angel takes care of the person to whom he is appointed to help by the Lord God himself constantly.

Do not confuse the concepts of a guardian angel by date of birth and name, and what is given by God at the time of baptism. In the Orthodox tradition, each believer has two personal heavenly intercessors. One of them is a guardian angel by name and date of birth. In other words, the saint on whose memorial day a person was born, or whose name was given to him.

Such a heavenly patron, strictly speaking, is not an angel, but is called that in the Russian tradition. It is believed that the righteous in their afterlife are in a disembodied state until the second coming of Jesus Christ. This property makes them look like heavenly warriors.

The second intercessor is a guardian angel who is not given by name and birth, but appears to a Christian at the moment of baptism.

Such a being is truly God's messenger and in his righteousness surpasses all the righteous who have ever lived on earth, except the Blessed Virgin Mary, who, as they say in hymns of praise, is “the most glorious cherub and the most honorable seraphim.”

The saint after whom the person is named is a real historical figure who actually lived on Earth and became famous for his pious deeds and godly life.

The faiths of different countries vary greatly, but in many of them there are messengers of God.

  1. In Islam, there are Cherubim who glorify Allah. Besides him, this religion describes four angels. Michael is the chief among others, the prophet Gabriel condescends to the chosen ones, Azrael is the ruler of the soul after death, Israfil announces the Last Judgment.
  2. There are many angels in Judaism. There are nine archangels who rule over the lower creatures.
  3. In Zoroastrianism, archangels are called Amesha Spenta, who are part of the deity. Amirtat is a symbol of immortality, Haurvtat is the guardian of health, Khshatra Vaira monitors power, Spenta Armaiti represents devotion, Asha Vahishta is the pinnacle of righteousness, Vohu Mana is the deification of light and thought.

How to find out the name of your guardian angel

Since the names and all other characteristics of incorporeal beings are known only to the Lord God, a person cannot call his guardian angel in any way. And if we are talking about the holy heavenly patron, then there is a rule, following which, you can not only determine the name of the saint, but also the day set aside by the Orthodox Church for his veneration. So how do you find out your angel's name? First of all, it is worth saying that he, as a rule, is the namesake of the person protected by him. That is, he bears the same name as his ward. It is no coincidence that in the Orthodox tradition, Angel Day for both women's and men's names is otherwise called the namesake. That is, on this day the Orthodox Church glorifies a saint named the same as this or that person. The name of an angel by date of birth can only be found out if the person was named according to the church calendar.

If the parents were guided by other principles, then the name day may not coincide with the date of birth. In order to determine the day of an angel in Orthodoxy, you need to look at the church calendar. If a saint with a similar name is glorified on the date you were born, then he is your angel. If such a coincidence is not found, then the day of remembrance of the saint with a similar name, which is closest to the birthday, is chosen as the name day. The problem can be considered solved.

The saint venerated on this date is your guardian angel by name and date of birth.

About baptism

Most often, if a baby is baptized before the moment when he is given a name, then the priest names him in honor of his guardian angel by birth (after the name of the saint who is revered on this day).

It happens that the sacrament of a person’s acceptance of the Orthodox religion is carried out at an older age. In this case, the priest, as a rule, leaves the person the same name that he bears. If it does not correspond to the Orthodox tradition, then the Christian has a so-called baptismal name. This is either the closest-sounding variant, or a different transcription of the same word.

For example, if a woman’s name is Agnia, then the priest can give her the name Anna. And if the man is George, then he is baptized George.

According to baptism, it is worth determining the names of angels. A list of names is given in church calendars, which are also called calendars.

Meaning of names

Each angel was created for a specific purpose. The names of angels reflect their special mission.

  1. Lucifer is fallen, contrary to the will of God.
  2. Uriel - kindles love for God in human hearts. Enlightens non-believers.
  3. Raphael - helps in healing, protects health, monitors thoughts and actions.
  4. Raguel - carries out punishments.
  5. Savriel - controls creatures that tempt humans.
  6. Gabriel - controls celestial beings, directs them to the right path.

This rank includes many other archangels. The canonical Bible mentions Michael, the chief of the archangels, in other books - Selafiel, Jeremiel, Barachiel and Jehudiel.

What to do on Angel Day

On this day, it is customary to pray to the saint in whose honor the person is named. Ideally, it is best to visit a church, especially since during the service on this date, as a rule, your heavenly patron is mentioned. You can also, in addition to praying to the saint, read at home a special church song dedicated to the life and exploits of the saint, which is called an akathist.

However, it is worth remembering that only the Lord God can be worshiped, since only He has power over the whole world. The holy heavenly patrons only serve Him in the matter of saving people.

The days of the angel by name are the date when a person should glorify his intercessor in prayers, and also turn to him for help in spiritual matters. That is, a Christian on this day, as a rule, prays for the intercession of his heavenly patron, who is in the Kingdom of Heaven and in close proximity to the Lord God. However, it is worth remembering that petitions and praises can be addressed not only to those righteous people on whose day you were born, but also to all others, since saints are equally pleasing to the Creator.

Many Internet users on various forums ask questions about Angel Days for female names. Usually Orthodox priests comment on them as follows. There is no special rule for female angel names. They are defined in exactly the same way as in the case of men. That is, the saint who bears your name and is glorified on her birthday is revered as a heavenly patron. If a guardian angel by date of birth is not found in the church calendar, then the saint whose memory is sung on the nearest date and who bears your name is considered such an intercessor.

Spell for the nine ranks

Blazing Seraphim, I call upon you. Draw a circle, bring me love. Mighty cherub, guard my gates, take away sadness and hatred from me. Thrones, stand strong, make me resolute, Help me to remain steady on land and sea. I call upon the dominions, whose power is not in doubt, That I may be honest in all that I do. Forces create circles of protection, Help me, weather and storm. Miraculous powers hover nearby, They give me the energy of the elements. The beginnings bring global changes, Blessing the world and every newborn. Glorious archangels show me the way, Leading to peace and harmony of every day. Guardian Angel, powerful deity, Bless me with your guiding light.

Heavenly patrons

It is unknown what names the intercessors who belong to the winged army of God, that is, angels, bear. However, there is a special day when all representatives of the invisible world who serve the Creator are glorified during a church service. It falls on the first Sunday after Trinity Day for Orthodox Christians, and on November 1 for Catholics. It's All Saints' Day.

On this date, as a rule, Orthodox Christians remember their invisible heavenly patrons and pray to them, as well as to the Lord God, thanking Him for giving them such helpers in the matter of spiritual salvation.

It is also worth remembering that every Monday the Russian Orthodox Church remembers all creatures belonging to the invisible world. Therefore, priests call for prayer to these intercessors at the beginning of each week. Here it is worth saying that prayer to such an intercessor is not only not prohibited on other dates, but is also extremely welcome. A church service at which collective prayer takes place is only a reminder of the existence of God's angels.

The Holy Fathers warn

Many righteous people, including the Apostle Peter, in their appeals to Christians warned against imagining any invisible beings, much less communicating with them. Prayer should take place without using any image appearing in the person's mind. There is a similar warning about dreams and other cases when angels or any other beings of the immaterial world appear to a believer. The Holy Fathers decisively say that, first of all, one should doubt the truth of such visions. Many righteous people who saw angels and other creatures said that they were not worthy of such communication with the upper world. The guardian will definitely meet the person under his charge after death, but in earthly life he extremely rarely appears to people in any guise.

There is a known case when one monk saw demons in the form of angels and was told that he would soon meet Christ and would have to worship Him. The church minister believed in this phenomenon and did according to their word. This circumstance upset his mind so much that he was out of his mind for several years. Only thanks to the prayers of other monks who led a righteous lifestyle, he managed to recover, and subsequently he became famous for his spiritual exploits and was canonized.

Other people who were more experienced in matters of faith, when encountering demons, as a rule, did not believe such tricks. Thus, one of the righteous, when the angels appeared to him and said that he should soon see Jesus Christ, objected to them, answering that he did not believe in it, because he was not worthy of such mercy. At these words, the servants of hell, who appeared in the guise of winged messengers of the Lord, immediately disappeared.

Another similar case is known. Angels appeared to one old man, known for his righteous life, and also promised him a quick meeting with the Savior. To this, this wise man replied that he was not worthy and did not want to see Christ in this life, but would definitely contemplate Him after he died. Therefore, you need to be careful when asking about the names of angels and demons. Moreover, in most cases they are unknown.

The Holy Fathers recommend doing the same to all those who think that they are one or another representative of the heavenly world.

This is explained by the fact that people who imagine that they are worthy of having saints or the Savior himself appear before them are in delusion. That is, they are overly proud of their spiritual merits, which, in essence, do not exist.

Queen of Angels (story of Saint Kztrin Labour)

I am not a Catholic and never have been, but when I first read this story, my heart started beating faster and my body got goosebumps. I believe there is no better example to demonstrate the power and existence of the Queen of Angels, the entity we Wiccans know as the Mistress.

On July 18, 1830, nun Catherine Labourg woke up on the Rue du Bac in Paris and saw a shining angel who ordered her to quickly go to the chapel. When Catherine arrived there, she saw the queen of angels giving her the first message. In this first message she introduced herself to Catherine as the sacred mother of all children. She called herself the Queen of Angels.

After her first visit, Catherine devoted herself to deep solitude and prayer for many months. Every morning Catherine returned to the chapel in the hope of seeing the Queen of Angels again. And one fine morning the queen returned to the chapel, standing over the ball bathed in bright light, and dressed in sunlight. Rings sparkled on each of her fingers. When she opened her palms, brightly burning rays of fire burst out of them and ignited the ball. The angels emitted a flickering light as the queen spoke the following words:

The sphere you see represents planet Earth. The rays that escape from my hands symbolize the grace given to me to be passed on to those of our children who ask me for it.

Precious stones from which rays do not come out are favors that my children forgot to ask for. The light of angels symbolizes their power and presence on earth. Let me help you, my children. Seek the light of the angels.

Catherine's vision intensified. The rays from the queen's hands lit fire in all parts of the ball. The golden door to the Land of Summer wavered in an oval around the vision. The Queen of Angels said:

The Divine will commands that a medal be made depicting this heavenly vision and given to you. The medal will always be a sign of my protection and the presence of angels to guide you along the paths of divine unconditional love for you. All who wear this medal with faith will be showered with favors, blessings and empowered.

This medal was made and distributed to Catholics around the world. Legend says that those who wore the medal with faith and conviction witnessed many miracles and were under divine protection. It became known as the "Miraculous Medal". People all over the world continue to wear this medal of angelic power, a gift from Our Lady Queen herself.

After studying this story, I decided to visit a local Catholic store. I felt strange wandering among the trappings of a religion alien to me, but at the same time I was proud that my own faith was strong and could not be shaken by another belief system. I found the Miraculous Medal and the card that came with it.

At home, I placed them on my angel altar (see chapter 2) and cleansed, blessed, and energized the items. There is a prayer on the back of the card. I created my own spell to suit my personal spiritual needs:

Merciful Goddess, I reunite with you under the name of Our Lady, Queen of Angels, who brought this Miraculous Medal. Let this medal be for me a convincing sign of your maternal affection and a constant reminder of the oath I took to my religion. Bless me with your loving protection and protection of your Spouse. The most powerful Virgin, Mother and Foremother! Let me be with you every minute of my life so that I, like you, can live and act in a way that fulfills my vow. With this medal I will call upon angelic powers to help my fellow men and control my own life. Let it be so.

If you don't like using the Miraculous Medal, don't worry about it. It took me a little time to find a medal without a cross on the back. I don't want to wear jewelry with a cross on it because it represents an attack and has a hidden meaning for me. You are free to choose another piece of jewelry that is more convenient for you. A Jew can use the Star of David, a Wiccan can use a pentacle. The symbol must be important to you and you must believe that it will work for the purpose you identified in the dedication and prayer above.

Catholics have a prayer that they use in all difficulties. I'll put it here and then we'll rewrite it a little to fit alternative religious traditions. Since all gods are one god, and all goddesses are one goddess, I don't think Our Lady will mind. Legend says that this prayer was first read by the angel Gabriel. O Mary, full of grace. The Lord is with You. Blessed are You among women, and blessed is the fruit of Your womb. Holy Mary, Mother

Dear God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death. Amen.

If you follow an alternative religion, you can say it like this: O Lady of grace, God is with you. Blessed are you among women and blessed is the fruit of your womb, Spouse and Son. Holy Goddess, Mother of the Earth, perform the sacrament for your children, now and in our time of need. Let it be so.
