What does mortal sin mean?

The list of mortal sins is the most serious sins that separate a person from the Lord. They enslave the will of a person, deprive him of grace, love for God and, if the sinner has not repented, lead the soul to destruction. Mortal sins can be compared to a stone around the neck, which prevents a person from rising to God and pulls him to the ground, preventing him from straightening up to his full height. The trauma inflicted on the soul by mortal sin becomes a serious obstacle to restoring a person’s communication with God.

What is even considered a sin? According to “Dogmatic Theology” by Archpriest Oleg Davydenkov, sin is an action, a word, a thought, a disposition of the heart, which represents a violation of the moral law established by God. Sin harms a person’s soul, represents a violation of God’s Commandments and a departure from a righteous life, from God. Sin is not a special nature or force created by God. This is a consequence of the distortion of the existence of human nature intended by the Creator.

Particularly serious sins in Christianity are called mortal sins, because their consequence is the spiritual death of the soul. She dies to God and Eternal Life. Also, the definition of “mortals” refers us to the Old Testament law, according to which the most serious sins were considered crimes and were punishable by death.

The forbidden fruit and the tempting serpent are a symbol of the Fall

Sins against your neighbor and God are also sins against yourself

How to get rid of sins. 4 stages of the fight against sins

In a sense, any sin is a sin against oneself. That is, we are well aware that we perceive it as a bad act that only harms us. But, if you look at it, every sin has a detrimental effect on the fate of the one who commits it.

There are sins against God - this, according to the Bible, is a violation of the first four Commandments. There are sins against one’s neighbor—actions that can harm another:

  • lie;
  • mental or physical pain caused;
  • temptation.

Let's not continue the list. And so the principle is clear. And who is the neighbor? Let's remember the parable of the Good Samaritan: your neighbor is the one with whom you currently cross paths. The Bible doesn't even say it's necessarily a person.

Surely there is someone among Orthodox Christians who believes that harming an animal is not a manifestation of a bad attitude towards one’s neighbor?

The Good Samaritan in the parable helped a man with whom he was not related either by blood, religion, or nationality. This shows that absolutely anyone who happens to be nearby should be considered a neighbor. Therefore, sin against one’s neighbor is harm caused to anyone, not just family and friends. Photo: proza.ru

One Jew was asked to explain the essence of his faith in a minute, to which he replied: “Don’t treat others the way you don’t want to be treated.”

This formula is also suitable for Christianity: God, people, animals, nature, the whole world - all this requires exclusively good deeds, and not just walking around the temple.

If we choose another way, it is always a sin. And it will always be turned against the person himself. The one who was offended will forget about his suffering in the next world. And his offender still has to pay for them.

7 virtues and 7 sins

Sin must be fought, and this is a constant process, and a matter of a single victory, as the Apostle Paul reminds:

“For we know that the law is spiritual, but I am carnal, sold under sin.”

(Rom. 7:14)

Time corrects everything

– Why do they publish books to help penitents?

- In order to sell them. And this has been the case at all times - along with spiritual literature, all sorts of things are sold. And this must be understood. Church shops sometimes sell things that are then taken away and burned.

And this happens precisely because people come to the Church and immediately begin to act without proper spiritual guidance. They ask for a blessing to write a book - they say, I am both a writer and a believer. And you can receive a blessing by being sophisticated and presenting part of the book, and then adding a certain part - there may be different options.

And there is a blessing for the book, but what kind of character will it be?! But time corrects everything: there are authors who will become saints, ascetics and will exert their colossal influence on the Church and the people of God. And there are books that will die along with the author and, perhaps, will even be a reason for him to feel shame and grief at God’s Judgment.

First confession

When a person just begins his acquaintance with God and the church, he does not know how to confess. The first confession has a second name - general. The novice remembers and confesses all his sins, starting from the age of seven. Until the age of seven, children are considered sinless; they do not require the sacrament of repentance.

“I’m going to confession for the first time, what sins should I list?” - a question often asked by a beginner going to God. To help the repentant, there are book tips, which are discussed above. There are brochures regarding children's confession. Such tips will be useful to a person preparing for general confession. It is quite difficult to remember sins committed at the age of seven.

So, have we agreed? You buy brochures, write a confession on paper (so as not to forget anything), come to the priest and lay out everything as best you can. What is confession, how to correctly name your sins to the priest, you now know.

By the way, about the time of confession. There is a very large flow of people in the parishes, and the priest has catastrophically little time. It’s rare to find priests who are willing to listen to a newcomer for more than an hour. The first confession is very long, so if you have the opportunity, go to the nearest monastery. The monks devote much more time to confessors than an ordinary priest can afford.

What to do if there is no such opportunity? Choose the church where you want to confess and go to the priest in advance, explaining your situation. It is possible that the priest will appoint a separate day for the first confession or indicate the hours when it is best to approach him.

What is the worst sin

The impossibility of forgiveness is associated only with such a degree of damage to the soul by sin when it is no longer able to perceive Divine grace and be close to God. In Orthodoxy there are 2 sins that are considered unambiguously mortal: suicide and blasphemy against the Holy Spirit. These are the most terrible sins in Christianity.

Suicide deprives a person of the opportunity to repent. This can only be done in earthly life, but beyond the grave we are not able to change anything about ourselves. A mitigating circumstance may be mental illness or damage to the mind of the suicide. In this case, his loved ones can hope for the mercy of the Lord.

Blasphemy against the Holy Spirit is a person’s deliberate and persistent resistance to the truth, it is conscious hatred of God. This terrible sin means not only blasphemous and blasphemous speech, but also a corresponding way of thinking, life, stubborn reluctance to see the manifestations of the Existence of God.

Christ said:

Such a person himself does not want to be with God, so the Lord leaves him. All other sins can be forgiven if the sinner sincerely mourns his sins.

Saint Theophan the Recluse said:

Let us also quote from St. Gregory of Nyssa:

Difference of sins according to basic definitions: original, ancestral, personal

The word "sin", as the equivalent of the Greek word "ἁμαρτία", means, in a literal interpretation, "missing the target", "missing". In this regard, the scope of the concept “sin” includes two fundamentally different meanings.

In the first case, the term “sin” embraces the concept of a thought, thought, desire or act committed by a person (or an evil spirit) contrary to the Divine will. In this regard, the Russian “sin” is an analogue of the Greek: “ἀνομία” - “lawlessness”, “injustice”.

In the second option, sin refers not to a specific (illegal) action, but to the consequences of lawlessness that negatively reflect on the nature and personality of a person. Original sin and generational sin fall under this category of “sin.”

Original sin is the corruption of human essence, transmitted to the descendants of Adam and Eve by hereditary means, and expressed in the fact that all people (with the exception of only one Man - the Lord Jesus Christ, conceived and born in a special, supernatural way) are born with damage in soul and body , receptive to evil.

Original sin does not make a person personally guilty before God. It only contributes to the formation of a sinful disposition of will in him. In turn, sinful actions committed under the influence of original sin bring Divine wrath upon a person and make him personally responsible before the Creator.

Ancestral sin, like original sin, is transmitted hereditarily, from parents to children, from ancestors to descendants. Like original sin, in form it represents corruption, a kind of moral disease.

The difference is that original sin affects human nature and affects every person (with the exception of Christ). Ancestral sin is reflected not on the essence (nature, human nature, which, let us recall, is the same for all people), but on the individual characteristics of representatives of one or another hereditary line. We can say that the factor of ancestral sin is, as it were, superimposed on the factor of original sin, aggravating it (we emphasize that the forms and degrees of manifestation of this sin can be different; let us assume that the son or grandson of a drunkard will not necessarily have an acute penchant for alcohol; biblical history provides us with a lot examples of how clearly children of the same parents can differ from each other).

Answers to any questions

This is not a legal document. This is a leaf with the repentance of your soul, your conscience. You need to understand that this small reminder is needed for the confessor, so that in a moment of excitement he does not forget to tell about everything that is bothering him.

In the note you should write down the mistakes that you have made, in your opinion, since your conscious age (about 6 years old). If you have already asked for forgiveness for something once, and have not committed this act again, then you do not need to go back and repent of it again. Once is enough. If you remember the same sin over and over again, then you have weak faith, which in turn is also considered a crime. Therefore, confess once and do not return to this topic again.

Example note:

She did not fast, wanted to earn more money, had an abortion, devoted little time to prayers and rarely visited church, did not baptize her child, became despondent, was lazy, complained about her situation, was jealous and angry, and wondered.

Sins against God and the Church

What is included in this subgroup? What sins should be listed in confession related to it? Be patient, we'll tell you everything in order.

Sins against God are the transgression of the first three commandments. These include lack of faith, doubt about the truth of the Holy Scriptures and Tradition, little zeal in the knowledge of Christian teaching, infatuation with heresy and superstition, distrust of God, grumbling and ingratitude towards the Creator. Lack of spiritual life is another sin against the Savior. A person does not pray at all, does not visit church and does not begin the Sacraments of Confession and Communion, or approaches the Chalice without proper preparation and reverence.

Lack of fear of the Lord, disobedience to His will, ignoring the memory of death and sobriety in prayer - these sins belong to this subgroup.

The meaning of confession

Having to talk about your sins in front of a stranger is embarrassing. Therefore, people refuse to go to confession, believing that God will forgive them anyway. This is the wrong approach. The priest acts only as an intermediary between man and God. His task is to determine the measure of repentance. The priest has no right to condemn anyone; he will not expel a repentant person from the church. During confession, people are very vulnerable, and clergy try not to cause unnecessary suffering.

It is important to see your sin, recognize and condemn it in your soul, and voice it before the priest. Have a desire not to repeat your misdeeds again, try to atone for the harm done through acts of mercy

Confession brings revival of the soul, re-education and access to a new spiritual level.

Sins (list), Orthodoxy, confession imply self-knowledge and the search for grace. All good deeds are done through strength. Only by overcoming yourself, doing works of mercy, and cultivating virtues in yourself, can you receive God's grace.

The meaning of confession lies in understanding the typology of sinners, the typology of sin. At the same time, an individual approach to each repentant is akin to pastoral psychoanalysis. The sacrament of confession is the pain of awareness of sin, recognition of it, the determination to voice and ask for forgiveness for it, cleansing of the soul, joy and peace.

A person must feel the need to repent. Love for God, love for oneself, love for one's neighbor cannot exist separately. The symbolism of the Christian cross - horizontal (love for God) and vertical (love for oneself and one's neighbor) - lies in the awareness of the integrity of spiritual life, its essence.

What needs to be done before coming to confession?

Confession consists of three parts: repentance immediately after committing a sin, recollection of the act during the day, a prayer to God for forgiveness and the Sacrament of Confession. The laity come to have a conversation with the priest, but this will not be a confession, even if you told about the violations committed. The conversation before Baptism does not mean confession. (see three main rules of Forgiveness Sunday)

When preparing for confession, there is no need to observe special fasting or say prayers.

Before repentance, pay attention to special prayers, sit in front of a candle in the evening and remember all your actions for which you are ashamed or feel guilty. Remember repentance alone is not enough, ask for forgiveness from those to whom you have caused pain and misfortune

Offended by indifference or importunity. Do not be afraid that you cannot quickly formulate all the violations of God's law. Write a plan for the story and try to confess as sincerely as possible to all your inner experiences and demonic thoughts, temptations and bad thoughts. If the violation you committed is terrible, a week before confession, cleanse yourself through fasting.

If you forgot a sin not out of malicious intent, don’t worry, it will still be forgiven. But the Lord will not forgive you for them if you specifically hid from the clergy something for which you feel guilty, but did not dare to say. It is useless to list everything described in scripture.

It is important to tell who you offended, what guilt you took on yourself and how you feel - confession requires specifics

The clergy note that there is no need to describe sexual sins in detail - it is enough to say that the sin was adultery.

Another important rule is don’t make excuses for yourself. If you make a mistake, the blame lies with you

If you do not see and feel your guilt, this does not mean that you are a saint. Ask the Lord to point out the violations.

How to confess?

How to correctly name your sins in confession is a question that often arises among neophytes. A person is embarrassed to list his own sins or does not know how to do it.

False shame comes from the evil one. He dreams of taking possession of the human soul, so it evokes thoughts that talking about certain sins is shameful. Cast aside false doubts! Concealing sin is unacceptable.

What should we do for those whose sense of shame prevails over all others? There are two options for confession. According to the first, a person lists his sins orally, according to the second, he writes on paper. Particularly shy confessors write down the confession, and then give it to the priest or read it out on their own, standing in front of the lectern.

For those wishing to confess verbally, here is a hint: a piece of paper will help you not to forget this or that sin. The bravest ones approach confession without any notes, relying on their own memory. Once near the lectern, they begin to get lost. Not from forgetfulness, but from fear of the priest. There is no need to be afraid or embarrassed, feel free to talk about your misdeeds - serious and not so serious. How to name sins in confession? It’s simple: we say “sinned/sinned”, and then a list of sins follows. In word, deed, thought, condemnation, envy and so on. What sins need to be listed in confession are described above.

The same principle works when recording sins on paper. People sometimes write real essays in the style: “I went to my neighbor’s house to drink tea. And the neighbor scolded my daughter, and I answered. It wouldn’t be necessary, but it’s her own fault.” This is not a confession, but self-justification. A person going to repentance must be firmly aware of his misdeeds and talk about them, and not tell the priest about his malicious neighbor.

All sins are divided into several main categories, which we will consider in more detail later.

Sins for confession for women

It should be remembered that confession is a secret that is not disclosed by the clergy. The Church has no right to interfere in marital relations, talk about infidelity, or do anything similar. But for greater moral peace, it is advisable that you have a permanent confessor to whom you can completely open your soul.

And below is an abbreviated version of the list of sins for women:

rare prayers, refusal to visit temple; thoughts are mainly about the worldly than about the spiritual; celibate sexual relations; perform abortions yourself or motivate them; show impurity in thoughts and desires; watch pornographic videos or read similar literature; gossip, lie, envy, be lazy, be offended; expose your body too much to attract the attention of others; afraid of getting old, wrinkles, thinking about suicide; abuse sweets, alcohol and drugs; refuse help; fortune telling, bewitching, practicing black magic.

Sins to confess for men

Sometimes they argue about the need to prepare a list of sins in advance. Allegedly, it can harm the sacrament and reduce everything to a banal utterance of sins.

But the most important thing is for a person to be absolutely sincere, aware of his sins, repent of them and not want to commit them in the future

It’s better to prepare a list if you are afraid of missing something important, since you can get nervous during confession, plus there is always a certain embarrassment

Below is a short version of such a list of unseemly actions for representatives of the stronger sex:

  • commit sacrilege, talk about worldly things in church;
  • doubt about life after death;
  • blaspheme, mock poor people;
  • behave cruelly, vainly, be lazy, be proud, be greedy;
  • failure to fulfill one’s civic duty to one’s homeland (military service);
  • avoid activities that you do not like, do not perform your duties properly;
  • insult others, hate, fight;
  • slander, talk about other people's weaknesses;
  • seduce into sinful acts (fornication, alcoholism, drug addiction, passion for gambling);
  • not helping parents and others;
  • steal, aimlessly collect objects;
  • boast, argue, humiliate other people;
  • behave arrogantly, be rude, despise someone, be familiar, be cowardly.

Look for a more detailed list of sins in the church brochure, and if difficulties still arise, ask your priest for help.

And in conclusion, a video on the topic is offered:

Do women's sins exist?

What does the list of sins for confession look like for women? And does such a thing exist in principle? “Women’s” sins include abortion, although with the participation of a spouse in this matter, the sin falls on both. The participation of a spouse means his or her insistence on an abortion.

What is the list of sins in confession for women? Abortion is discussed above. This list also includes entering a temple while being “unclean,” kissing (kissing) icons in this state, touching a shrine (lighting a candle). Confession and communion in an unclean form are also prohibited.

An unclean woman is in a state of monthly purification. There is debate about whether it is possible to venerate icons in this state and begin the sacraments. Young priests allow it, older ones swear a lot. Who to listen to?

According to the resolution of the Bishops' Conference of 2015, a woman is forbidden to begin the sacrament of communion while in a state of uncleanness, without a special reason. A special situation is the threat of death without repentance and communion.

These are the sins that women need to be told about in confession, if they occurred. Oh yes, one more moment! Makeup, manicure and hair coloring are considered sinful acts that must be repented of.

"Life is a striped thing"

Cooling in faith can occur both after a formal attitude towards it and after “burning”. I had such a parishioner. I came to the temple, everything literally shines. That’s what I called her: Your Excellency. He told her: “Look, you are so happy now. This is amazing. But your present joy is a gift from God. It needs to be preserved. It's not that simple at all." She was happy for about a year. And then some young man appeared in her life, and she left the Church. This happens, unfortunately. God grant that she finds her way to God.

And it happens that a person seems to have overcome the cooling after such a “burning”, everything seems to have improved for him, and now he again feels some kind of stagnation in his spiritual life. Life is a striped thing. And spiritual life can be compared to climbing a step pyramid. You climb and climb, you come to a level place, there seems to be no change. But you still move, approaching another slope. And so you start climbing again.

That's how it should be. The main thing is not to give up, not to lose heart, not to put up with sin, with what you cannot put up with, and you don’t need to force something out of yourself. If you feel that you don’t have it, ask. The Lord is the giver of all good things. If you feel that you cannot repent, pray: “Lord, teach me to repent, give me the opportunity to sincerely worry about the sins I commit, and give me the strength to fight them.” We need to see our sins all the time and not be horrified, but thank God when He reveals them to us.

Ten Commandments

“What sins should I list in confession?” - this is the question asked by those who begin their path to the Lord. The Savior gave people ten commandments, and by breaking them, a person sins.

For those who do not know about the commandments, we publish all ten for your reference:

  1. I am the Lord your God; Let you have no other gods before Me.
  2. You shall not make for yourself an idol or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is on the earth below, or that is in the water under the earth; do not worship them or serve them.
  3. Do not take the name of the Lord your God in vain.
  4. Remember the Sabbath day to keep it holy; Six days you shall work and do all your work, but the seventh day is the Sabbath of the Lord your God.
  5. Honor your father and your mother, so that your days on earth may be long.
  6. Dont kill.
  7. Don't commit adultery.
  8. Don't steal.
  9. Do not bear false witness against your neighbor.
  10. Thou shalt not covet thy neighbor's house; You shall not covet your neighbor’s wife, nor his male servant, nor his maidservant, nor his ox, nor his donkey, nor anything that is your neighbor’s.

Sincerity of Confession

A priest as a psychologist can recognize how sincere a person is in his repentance. There are confessions that offend the sacrament and the Lord. If a person mechanically talks about sins, has several spiritual fathers, or hides the truth, such actions do not lead to repentance.

Behavior, tone of speech, words used to pronounce confession - all this matters. This is the only way the priest understands how sincere the penitent is. Pangs of conscience, embarrassment, worries, shame contribute to spiritual cleansing.

Sometimes the personality of the priest is important for the parishioner. This is not a reason to condemn and comment on the actions of clergy. You can go to another church or turn to another holy father for confession.

It can be difficult to voice your sins. The emotional experiences are so strong that it is more convenient to make a list of unrighteous actions. Father is attentive to every parishioner. If, due to shame, it is impossible to tell about everything and the repentance is deep, then the priest has the right to forgive the sins, a list of which was compiled before confession, without even reading them.

A little more about confession

What does every beginner need to know who is about to begin the sacrament of confession? There are several points that are worth discussing separately.

Firstly, time. In some churches, confession begins before the service (on Sunday); we are talking about a church where one priest serves. It is necessary to take this point into account when planning to confess. How can I find out about the schedule of a particular temple? Call or come in person and clarify your question.

The second point is evening confession. Believe me, the best option for telling the priest more and, as a result, repenting is Saturday evening. As a rule, closer to the end of the service or after it, priests go to confession. In the evening there is more time and opportunity to devote the necessary attention to each penitent than on Sunday, when a good part of the confessors gathered to receive communion.

Priests are different. Some are kind, support and calm during confession, while others are strict and act in such a way as to sober up the person. When you hear something you don’t want at all, wait to be disappointed and leave the church forever. Better think about the words of the priest, delve into yourself. Sometimes the most offensive words and teachings turn out to be the most correct impetus for correcting your own life.

And lastly: when approaching the sacrament of repentance, speak quietly. Sometimes confessors repent of their sins so sincerely and loudly that not only the queue behind them, but also most of the church can hear them. Therefore, when the priest asks you to speak more quietly, you should not be offended.

List of sins to prepare for confession in Orthodoxy for women and men

How often do you approach the holy sacraments of Repentance and Communion? Are you using these life-saving remedies with proper preparation? Do you begin to correct your life after receiving these sacraments?

5. Have you been carried away by writings hostile to the word of God and the teachings of the Church?

6. Do you pray for all Orthodox Christians, both living and dead?

7. Do you take a heartfelt part in the prayers of the Church?

8. Have you sinned in thought, word or deed against the 8th commandment of the church, which prohibits withholding, concealing or stealing anything belonging to the church?

9. Have you visited immodest entertainment societies that awaken unchaste thoughts and feelings? Was he especially not in these places of entertainment on the eve of Sundays and holidays, which should be sanctified with prayer and deeds of charity?

Questions regarding the plan of our responsibilities to God,

to our neighbors and ourselves

1.
In relation to God.
Do you consider it your sacred duty to acquire correct, clear knowledge about God and other truths and objects of holy faith?

Do you love God most of all, with all your heart and all your soul?

Have you often violated love and reverence by thoughts of unbelief or lack of faith, by coldness or absent-mindedness during worship, in church or at home, while standing in prayer, by omitting daily prayers in the morning and evening, and even by completely neglecting them?

Have you angered God by not paying attention to the lessons given by life and the ways of God’s Providence?

Have you not upset the Lord with a cowardly murmur against the supposedly unjust judgments of His Providence, or with ingratitude for blessings, or with mockery of the objects of the holy faith, of the holy saints of God, sacred rites and church decrees?

2.
In relation to neighbors.
Do you love your neighbors, according to the commandment of Christ, as yourself?

Do you respect in them the dignity of people, in all those like you, who have the same moral powers and rights to the same Kingdom of the afterlife?

Do you value in them the high title of Christians, sealed with the gift of the Holy Spirit, redeemed by the blood of Christ, called like you to the inheritance of eternal bliss?

Didn't you look at your neighbors as an instrument to satisfy passions, as a means to achieve shameful goals?

Have you not offended them with unfounded suspicion or distrust, contempt, slander, hatred, condemnation, rancor, vindictiveness, gloating in their sorrows and sorrows?

Have you appropriated someone else's property by theft or deception, covetousness or other dishonest means?

Have you harmed the property, honor, good name and even the health of your neighbors?

3.
In relation to yourself.

Do you value your human and Christian dignity?

Do you keep your soul and body pure?

Do you refrain from everything that is contrary to sobriety and chastity?

Do you avoid the sins of intemperance, excess in food and drink, which so inflame wicked passions in the soul and disordered movements in the body?

Are you faithful to your vows to God?

Have you spoken false, nasty and seductive words?

Have you not used your eyes, hands, feet and whole body to harm yourself and others?

Did you behave worthily in the rank in which you were placed by the Providence of God?

Have you used wealth, honor and other gifts and advantages usefully and worthy of the glory of God?

Are you living a grace-filled Christian life or are you in a state of sin, insensibility, unrepentance and spiritual deadness, although you may confess often?

Do you sincerely desire the salvation of your soul, i.e. Do you realize the severity of sin, which offends the greatness of God, angers the love and mercy of the Heavenly Father, tramples on the Holy Blood of the Son of God, and dishonors the grace of the All-Holy Spirit?

Do you feel all the danger of a sinful life, which deprives us of the glory of the children of God, expels us from the bright Kingdom of God, makes the soul the object of disgust of the holy Angels, the amusement of evil and unclean spirits?

Does your heart tremble at the mere thought of losing eternal life, of being deprived of the kingdom of God for all eternity? Does your whole being shudder when you think about the endless eternity of torment that awaits the sinner after death?

The following list should not be considered as “instructions”, but as an aid to a general understanding of what sins and tendencies exist, and from them to feel the attitude to which we are called to walk the path of repentance.

Serious sins that can deprive one of hope for salvation 1. Pride, despising everyone, demanding servility from others, ready to ascend to heaven and become like the Most High: in a word - pride to the point of self-adoration. 2. An insatiable soul, or Judas’s greed for money, combined for the most part with unrighteous acquisitions, not allowing a person even a minute to think about spiritual things. 3. Fornication, or the dissolute life of the prodigal son, who squandered all his father’s estate on such a life. 4. Envy, leading to every possible crime against one’s neighbor. 5. Gluttony or carnal knowledge, not knowing any fasting, combined with a passionate attachment to various amusements, following the example of the Evangelical rich man, who had fun all day long. 6. Uncompromising anger and resolving to terrible destruction, following the example of Herod, who in his anger beat the Bethlehem babies. 7. Laziness, or complete carelessness about the soul, carelessness about repentance until the last days of life, such as in the days of Noah. Sins of blasphemy against the Holy Spirit Excessive trust in God or continuation of a gravely sinful life in the sole hope of God’s mercy. Despair or the feeling opposite to excessive trust in God in relation to God’s mercy, which denies the fatherly goodness in God and leads to thoughts of suicide. Stubborn unbelief, not convinced by any evidence of truth, even obvious miracles, rejecting the most established truth.

Sins that cry out to heaven for vengeance for them In general, intentional homicide (abortion), and especially parricide (fratricide and regicide). Sin of Sodom. Unnecessary oppression of a poor, defenseless person, a defenseless widow and young orphans. Withholding from a wretched worker the wages he deserves. Taking away from a person in his extreme situation the last piece of bread or the last mite, which he obtained with sweat and blood, as well as the forcible or secret appropriation of alms, food, warmth or clothing from prisoners in prison, which are determined by him, and generally oppressing them. Sadness and insults to parents to the point of daring beatings.

Further, as an aid during preparation for confession, a list of sins is proposed, from which you select only those committed by you, starting from the age of 7

Sins against the Lord God Belief in dreams, divination, meetings and other signs. Doubts about faith. Laziness towards prayer and absent-mindedness during it. Not going to Church, long absence from confession and Holy Communion. Hypocrisy in Divine Worship. Blasphemy or just murmuring against God in the soul and in words. The intention to raise your hands. In vain. An unfulfilled promise to God. Blasphemy of the sacred. Anger with mention of evil spirits (trait). Eating or drinking on Sundays and holidays before the end of the Liturgy. Violation of fasts or inaccurate observance of them is a work issue on holidays.

Sins against one's neighbor. As a rule, they come from a lack of love, from anger, hatred or insensitivity towards him and his salvation (a list of sins from which you choose those you have committed, starting from the age of 7): - Sinned by lack of love for your neighbor, which manifests itself: impatience , unmercifulness, selfishness, suspiciousness, jealousy, inconstancy in relation to neighbors, suspicious character. Suspicion is a serious sin, indicating a non-Christian structure of the human soul. A Christian in all life circumstances must always put everyone else above himself in his relationships with others, and consider people’s actions and their motives from the best side. Such is the peaceful spirit. — I sinned by not having acts of love and not forcing myself to do them, including: I didn’t visit the sick and prisoners, I didn’t help the needy, I was stingy with alms, I judged the poor, I didn’t console the grieving, I didn’t defend innocent people and just causes, I didn’t want to feel sorry for my neighbor, I didn’t want to give in. to serve him. Deeds of love should not be done out of self-invention - a “homemade cross”, but where and when the Lord, through the prevailing life circumstances, calls us to this. — I sinned by being careless about saving my neighbor . This sin includes coldness and forgetfulness in prayers for one’s neighbor. In each person we must see, first of all, his immortal soul, and not just his corruptible flesh, and build relationships with our neighbor in such a way as to contribute to the rooting of his soul in eternal life. — I sinned by disrespecting my parents . He did not humble himself before his parents, did not show them due respect and attention, was angry, shouted, raised his hand against them, did not care, did not rest in their old age, etc. Dishonoring parents is a violation of the fifth commandment of God’s law: “Honor your father and your mother.” “as the Lord your God commanded you, so that your days may be long and that it may go well with you in the land that the Lord your God is giving you.” Deut. 5, 16. But this should not relegate the reverence of God to the background: “Whoever loves father or mother more than Me is not worthy of Me” Matthew 10:37. — I sinned by disrespecting my elders . — I sinned by not raising my children in the Orthodox faith . According to the teachings of the Church, parents at the Last Judgment of God will answer before God for how they raised their children. Therefore, Christian upbringing of children is also a matter of saving the souls of the parents themselves. Believing parents should baptize their child as early as possible and from that time go to Church with him, regularly give him communion, pray for him and with him out loud from infancy, and in due time teach him prayers and the basics of faith. The main thing is to instill in your child a Christian worldview and a corresponding structure of the soul with your soul, your example, the “hierarchy of values” in your life. “I sinned by not caring about the people subordinate and dependent on me. — Sinned by voluntary or involuntary murder , including abortion. This includes the sins of self-harm. Self-harm is the voluntary or involuntary infliction of injury and assault on oneself or others, including actions that voluntarily or involuntarily led to termination of pregnancy, miscarriage, or any damage to the health of the fetus. Abortion is the mortal sin of killing an innocent baby. The Church does not distinguish at what stage of the baby’s development his life was destroyed - an embryo or a fetus, for life and an immortal soul are given to a person by the Lord from the moment of conception. For the Court of God, it makes no difference whether a woman went to the hospital “to have an operation” or, for example, buried a newborn baby in the garden, explaining that she was ashamed of the shame, or her salary was small and the living space did not allow, etc. The sin of abortion is invariably followed by God's punishment, especially in old age. According to the canons of the Church, those involved in abortion should be expelled from the Church for many years until complete repentance and atonement. Those who have such a grave sin on their conscience must repent of it from the bottom of their hearts, firmly promise the Lord not only to never commit it again themselves, but in every possible way to keep those around them from it, and, having confessed this sin to the priest, accept penance from him - a church mandate in atonement for this mortal sin. — I sinned with cruelty to animals . A person commits a sin if he cruelly beats and tortures animals, mocks them, and does not create normal living conditions for them. — I sinned with passionate attachment to animals . Passionate attachment to animals violates the natural, God-given relationship between man and animals, which must be cared for and pitied, and damages a person’s relationship with other people and with himself, and is also harmful for the animals themselves. — I sinned with hatred and malice, ill-will, ill-retribution, i.e. vindictiveness, gloating. — I sinned with anger and irascibility. — I sinned with a curse (curse). A curse is the sin of calling upon one’s neighbor satanic forces. In this case, great damage is caused to one's neighbor, especially in the case when this neighbor is spiritually dependent on the one who curses him - such as, for example, a child from his parents. But the curser himself inevitably becomes dependent on evil spirits, becoming its “legitimate” victim, for he himself called it. — I sinned through intransigence , rancor, and unwillingness to humble myself before my neighbor. — I sinned by insulting , slandering, slandering. — I sinned by irritability , contradiction, reproach, stubbornness, argumentativeness. — I sinned with partiality . Partiality is bias, partiality, “double yardstick” in relations with people. — I sinned with slander and gossip. — I sinned with envy . — I sinned with lies , including deceit, hypocrisy, and boasting. — I sinned by condemnation . Condemnation is an extremely widespread and at the same time extremely poorly understood sin. A secularized consciousness considers it not only permissible, but also necessary to have a judgment on everything, which, as a rule, is of a condemnatory nature. At the same time, not only the extreme subjectivity of any individual judgment is lost sight of, but also the Lord’s direct prohibition of the sin of condemnation, repeatedly repeated in the Gospel. Thus, in the Sermon on the Mount, Christ directly connects God’s pardon of each person with his non-judgment of other people: “Judge not, lest ye be judged, for with the judgment ye judge, ye shall be judged.” Matthew 7:1 - 2. Several sins are intertwined in condemnation. The sin of pride (lack of humility), the sin of dislike for one’s neighbor and, finally, the theft of the Divine right of judgment. For only the Creator has the right to judge His creation. “There is only one Lawgiver and Judge, able to save and to destroy: and who are you, who judge another?” James 4:12. — I sinned by partiality , people-pleasing, flattery. People-pleasing is a selfish desire to please someone in order to obtain some benefits or privileges; it is admiration or fear of the “powers of this world.” — I sinned by seducing others with behavior , including the desire to be passionately liked. To please out of a vain desire for attention to oneself or out of a desire for lustful seduction. The Bible says about seducers and temptations: “Whoever causes one of these little ones who believe in Me to stumble, it would be better for him if a millstone were hung around his neck and he were drowned in the depths of the sea. Woe to the world from temptations, for temptations must come; but woe to that man through whom temptation comes” Matthew 18:6-7. “I sinned with freedom and impudence in dealing with people, impudence and insensitivity, mockery and ridicule, shamelessness. — I sinned with passionate curiosity , spying and eavesdropping on people, the desire to learn other people’s sins and secrets. Sins against yourself. As a rule, they are associated with the passions of gluttony, love of money and fornication. (a list of sins from which you select only those committed by you, starting from the age of 7):

— I sinned by neglecting God’s gifts : life, talents, time. Empty daydreaming, meaningless pastime, idle talk, idleness. — I sinned with an addiction to television, computers, collecting, sports, reading literature that is not good for the soul and other shows and activities. — I sinned by neglecting my health or being overly concerned about my health. — I sinned by voluptuousness, laziness , relaxation of the body and feelings, excessive sleeping, indolence, love of bodily peace, parasitism. Parasitism is “freedom.” The Apostle Paul teaches: “If anyone does not want to work, let him not eat” 2 Thess. 3:10. Voluptuousness is the love of the sweets of life, the desire to live in pleasures. — I sinned by not fulfilling my daily duties , by not maintaining a conscience regarding things - this is negligence about preserving things, about using them wisely and economically, about doing quality work, and not damaging anything. This also includes a careless attitude towards one’s duties according to the principle “Somehow, it will work out”, “Blooper”, “In a hurry”, etc. - I sinned with love of money , covetousness, dreams of wealth, love of gifts, addiction to various objects that deprive the soul of freedom, wastefulness or, conversely, infringement of oneself and others due to greed, stinginess and passion for hoarding, self-interest. The love of money is a passion in which money, property, and any material wealth become an idol. Selfishness - in Church Slavonic - greed. — I sinned by misappropriation , covetousness, theft, theft, luring, begging. Evil acquisition is the acquisition of money, material goods or property by dishonest means unworthy of a Christian, for example by cunning. Extortion - bribes, extortion, etc. Theft is the theft of government property. Theft is the appropriation of something that does not belong to oneself (property, money, things, praise, name, etc.) Sacrilege is the appropriation of something taken from the Church. — I sinned by fornication . Fornication is a carnal relationship between a man and a woman who are not legally married. Fornication is a mortal sin. According to the words of the Apostle Paul, “no fornicator has an inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and God” Eph.5:5. — I sinned by committing adultery . Adultery is a carnal relationship between a man and a woman if one or both of them are married and at the same time have relations with another person. Adultery is a more serious sin than fornication, for in this case, in addition to spiritual damage to these people themselves, their loved ones are insulted, and the Church as the celebrant of a legal marriage is also subject to reproach. — He sinned by unnatural fornication , these include: incest — close relationships, as well as sodomy, bestiality, etc. — He sinned by masturbation . Handjob is the satisfaction of carnal lunacy in any form. “I sinned with lustful incitement and all kinds of sensuality: reading depraved books and looking at seductive pictures and shows. — I sinned by night desecrations . Night desecration can be free, i.e. a consequence of intemperance in life: gluttony, sleeping too much, enjoying lustful thoughts, etc. Also a consequence of condemning one’s neighbor, which requires special repentance in the Sacrament of Confession. And it can be an involuntary physiological phenomenon without obvious sinful reasons. This is not a sin. But in any case, this should not be hidden during confession. If it happens, wash yourself, read a special canon or prayer against desecration according to the prayer book. — I sinned by intemperance in married life , by not observing fasts and holidays. The Church prohibits marital relations on the eves of holidays, Sundays and on the eve of Wednesday and Friday, as well as during multi-day fasts. — He sinned by immodest views and free behavior with persons of the opposite sex, voluptuous touches, immodesty in clothing and jewelry; dances and body movements that evoke voluptuous feelings, lust, spiritual and mental darkness, seductive conversations and songs, immoderate laughter. Participation in passionate worldly pastimes, including playing cards and other games of chance. — I sinned by spiritual impurity : lustful thoughts, procrastination in them, recollection of sins, incontinence of mental and physical feelings. — I sinned by smoking, drinking and using drugs and substances that cause narcotic intoxication, euphoria, unnaturally stimulating, relaxing and intoxicating. This is the enjoyment of the effects of drugs, ranging from the actual narcotic drugs, medicines and toxic substances to concentrated tea, listening to intoxicating music, etc. The use of drugs is a mortal sin, because it relates to the sin of suicide. The Church does not prohibit the consumption of alcoholic beverages in moderation, but forbids getting drunk with them, just as it does not prohibit food, but forbids gluttony. — I sinned by gluttony , secret eating, gluttony, laryngeal madness, polyeating, intemperance in food and drink, dissatisfaction with food and drink. Gluttony is a passion for satiety with food and drink, when it becomes a life idol. Secret eating is eating food secretly out of greed, shame, or unwillingness to share. Gluttony is a passionate desire to fill the stomach (womb) more tightly, to eat as much as possible. Laryngeal madness is a passion for eating especially tasty food, enjoying the sensations of taste. — I sinned by eating animal blood . Not eating blood is one of the most ancient provisions of the church charter. See: Gen.9:4; Ex.34,15; Acts 15:20. Blood is the carrier of the soul. By consuming animal blood, a person becomes imbued with animal instincts and darkens the soul.

The importance of sincerity in confession

During the process of confession, the clergyman also takes on the role of a psychologist; he is able to recognize the degree of sincerity of a person in his repentance. After all, there can be types of confessions that offend the sacrament and God.

If, for example, an individual simply remembers his sins in a mechanical form, confesses to several confessors at once, and strives to conceal the truth, repentance cannot be achieved with the help of such actions.

At the same time, great importance is paid to the behavior and tone of speech with which a person confesses. This (plus the presence of pangs of conscience) helps the priest to be confident in the sincerity of the repentant.

Also, in some cases, the identity of the clergyman is important to a person. But this should not become a reason for condemning or commenting on the actions of clergy. If for some reason you do not like your spiritual father, you can always change him by contacting another temple.

Some sins and bad actions cause a person so much moral suffering that he does not even dare to voice them out loud. In such cases, the option of compiling a list of sins and absolving them by a clergyman is allowed, even without reading or viewing.

Useful tips

  • The free will of each person is whether to go to confession or not and how often to perform this sacrament. You cannot impose your will on another, forcing him to go to church for confession when he himself does not want to do this.
  • Before confession, you should make a list of sins you have committed in advance, while being as frank as possible, without hiding or saying anything.
  • Ideally, you need to find your personal spiritual mentor, to whom you will constantly go to confess, and will also be able to talk with him on spiritual topics and ask questions that concern you.
  • In the church, you should find out in advance the days when confessions take place, because they are usually not held every day.
  • On the right day, come to church in proper attire: men should wear a T-shirt or shirt, always with sleeves, and trousers or jeans (but not short shorts). Women cover their heads with a scarf, do not wear makeup and wear a skirt of minimum length to the knee.

Ignorance is removed by acquaintance with Christ

– What about people who start going to church in adulthood and see a lot of different literature there?

- They are children too. These are babies of faith, neophytes - people who are not softened in heart. Moreover, a person can go to the temple for 30 years and remain a neophyte. There is no standard here. God finds his own approach to everyone, as long as the person opens his heart. And this requires work.

And confession and communion are, first of all, a study of Scripture. Prayer helps a lot, and you need to get used to prayer - going to services, listening to liturgical texts, psalms, poems, songs.

“But it often happens that a person comes to church almost for the first time with the desire to confess and asks how to do it.

“There are people who come to the pharmacy for treatment, and there are those who go to the doctor for treatment. And if you come to a church shop for treatment, these are your problems and your immaturity. This approach to solving the problem is unscientific and unweighted.

And the scientific approach is to consult a doctor. And if I have doubts about the doctor, I will go to the head physician and the professor. I will spend money and time on this, the most precious time is Sunday morning.

If you want live communication...

– When a person sees books with recommendations for preparing for confession, how should he react?

Archpriest Grigory Kryzhanovsky

– A person needs to see his neighbor and God, and then books. You need to go to a priest and read the New Testament. Let him humble himself and listen to the priest’s recommendations.

A person who wants to go to God must think about what God needs, why God created man, what God wants from him. The answers to these questions are in the Holy Scriptures. By comprehending Divine Revelation through the Holy Scriptures, a person understands what is wrong with him and what he is doing wrong. And he regrets this, and this he repents of.

And no one needs a simple listing of sins. Even a confession from a piece of paper is not good form - it is bad style. A person can make a list of sins in preparation for confession.

Sins crying out to Heaven for vengeance

What sins are listed during confession? All those available, and those listed in this section, require special repentance:

  • Murder is one of the most terrible sins. This also includes abortions; we’ll talk about this below.
  • Sin of Sodom. The now fashionable trend of same-sex love is called the sin of Sodom. Do you know where the name came from? From the destroyed city of Sodom. The Lord burned him for his sins, including the sin of same-sex love.
  • An insult inflicted on an orphan, a widow, a poor and defenseless person.
  • Withholding earnings from an employee.
  • Taking away the last piece of bread or the last penny from the poor.
  • Sorrows and insults inflicted on parents, beatings.

Basic sins: seven types

It is impossible to list them all; here we have collected the main and most “popular” violations.

Gluttony

If the first place for you is not spiritual, but carnal food, non-compliance with existing fasts and an inclination to overeat.

Love of money

It is observed in those who admire their property. Dreams of getting rich and does not help the poor and needy. This type of sin includes theft and robbery for enrichment.

Anger

Absolutely everyone experiences it every day. The only difference is the degree of manifestation of irritability. Rage, shouting, quarrels and arguments are evidence of it. The priests classify murder and incitement of hatred as anger.

Dejection

Laziness and refusal of church rituals and rules are a serious sin. If you have given up prayer, stopped going to church and do not follow God’s established rules, you should repent in despondency. Laziness manifests itself in drowsiness and reluctance to work, in constant celebrations and bitterness, leading to despair.

Vanity

Every second Russian who wants to gain fame and fame suffers from this. Excessive attention to appearance, pursuit of celebrity and guile. The path to achieving fame is hypocrisy and deception, envy and pretense.

Pride

Refusal from simple worldly life, contempt for others and high demands on them. Unbelief and following carnal pleasures, leaving the love of God, humility and repentance.

List of sins for confession

How to talk about sins in confession? To begin with, it is important to remember that confession is not a mechanical listing of sins, and we confess to God, and do not report to the priest about what we have done, like a strict teacher. The priest laments with us about our sins, and does not wait for the opportunity to reprimand us for our misdeeds

But sometimes, without a list of sins, it can be difficult to prepare for confession, and in order to remember what harmed our soul, what temptations we succumbed to, it is easier to use the list. This list is a helper, but you shouldn’t make up your entire confession from it. God already knows about all our sins, and if you forgot to say about an act for which you sincerely repent, this does not mean that repentance for this particular sin will not be “taken into account.” God is not a vengeful Spirit with a calculator of our transgressions, but a Heavenly Father who gave His Son to die to atone for our sins. There is no point in deliberately hiding sins; confession is intended to help a person, not harm.

Sins against yourself

What does the list of sins look like? What sins should be listed in confession? It is noted above that each person has his own list. However, there are book tips that will help you remember long-forgotten sins. If a person begins confession for the first time, then the brochures will help prepare for the sacrament and guide the neophyte on the true path.

What sins should be listed in confession? When it comes to oneself, sins look like this:

  • Dejection and despair, indicating a lack of trust in God. Especially allowing thoughts of suicide are disgusting to the Savior. You need to repent of this.
  • Bodily excesses. Lay in bed in the morning? Eating an extra treat? Should I smoke or get drunk? All of the above refers to bodily excesses that need to be combated.
  • Dishonesty, wastefulness, idleness, attachment to things - these sins hardly need explanation.

List of sins to confess to Father

Every day of an ordinary or churchly, worldly person passes in sins. We sometimes don’t even notice these offenses or don’t attach any importance to them. Yes, we don’t do terrible and terrible things, but we hold grudges, are lazy, envy, watch a lot of TV or discuss and judge the neighbor’s girl - all these are sins.

In the modern world, when a person is surrounded by so many temptations, a stream of varied, contradictory information flows, it is difficult to control oneself and one’s mind. A person whose thoughts are burdened by worries about his own mistakes suffers, sometimes even gets sick. But an Orthodox Christian knows that you can repent of your sins, and then your soul will feel better, your spirit will strengthen, your body will become healthier, and life will sparkle with bright colors again.

Confession is a sacrament in which the penitent tells his sins to the priest and gets rid of them. To prepare for confession and communion, you should write a note with the sins that a person wants to repent of. Usually this is a small piece of paper listing sinful acts and thoughts. Why a leaf with a list? Because during confession a person may become worried, confused (especially if it is the first confession in a person’s life) and not tell about something. And then, being at home in a calm environment, remember this and suffer again.

It is impossible to compile a complete list of sins against oneself; in general, these are actions that lead away from God

Sin against oneself is an action that leads away from the Lord. Such things are called temptations, temptations, etc. They distract our attention, take energy and time. Instead of doing something useful, we waste our lives.

It is impossible to compile a complete list of sins against yourself. There will always be little things that won't fit into it. The main thing is to understand the general principle.

It is impossible to compile a complete list of sins; such things must not be known, but felt

Here is a list of sins that are directed against oneself:

Verbosity, idle talk, gossip, slander, posturing, etc. The Word is the gift of God. This is an excellent tool for conveying important thoughts, good emotions, and useful knowledge.

An attempt to show off in front of others by judging others, the intention to appear “cool” - all this is empty chatter that sends hours of our life into the trash, and cultivates pride in a person.

The sin of narcissism (arrogance, vanity, self-importance, pride, arrogance, rudeness). If a person puts his own image, and not God’s, at the center of the Universe, we are absorbed by the material world. But this world is full of illusions.

A person imagines himself to be something that he is not, his whole life is a lie and emptiness. She seemed to be there, but on the other hand she wasn’t there. The righteous person does not invent merits for himself, but creates them naturally, because he cannot do otherwise.

One of the sins against oneself is narcissism, which distracts a person from good deeds and God. Photo: artchive.ru

The classic symbol of this sin is the myth of Narcissus, who fell in love with his reflection. Although in this myth such a state was a punishment for the young man, and not his choice (“Narcissus by the Stream” painting by Caravaggio).

False righteousness. This is an imitation of spiritual life. Churches are full of such ostentatious believers who love to judge others for inappropriate appearance, alternative views on faith, and basically anything else.

These judges violate the commandment “Do not judge, lest you be judged,” and instead of genuine spirituality, they prefer to imitate it.

Showing off. Good deeds that are not from the heart can hardly be called good.

Any righteous act is a sacrifice.

What is the sacrifice of, say, a billionaire who gave 30 rubles to a poor old woman? He did this only to imagine himself righteous. But a true righteous person does good deeds with zeal even when no one knows about them. Otherwise a person has no humility.

Bad habits (including gluttony). When we destroy our body, we deprive ourselves of the opportunity to do good deeds. In addition, we refuse the gift of God - life. In addition, any such vice is a slow suicide, which is also nothing good.

Lie. Since the times of ancient Egypt, lying has been called a terrible sin. It leads people away from the truth, and the truth is God and His world. Illusion leads to incorrect judgments and erroneous actions. Surrounding himself with lies, a person must coordinate his life with it. He becomes a slave to what he came up with.

Greed. Excessive attachment to material values prevents a person from using them to help others. Thus he deprives the world of good. But one should not confuse greed with attachment in general. If a person has a favorite grandmother’s closet that it would be a pity to throw away or give to someone else, then this is sentimentality, not greed.

Ebenezer Scrooge is the hero of Charles Dickens' classic story A Christmas Carol. It illustrates very well how greed destroys a person and how giving it up can return everything to a favorable direction (still from the animated film “A Christmas Story”, 2009). Photo: livelib.ru

Envy. Envy can motivate a person to do any evil. She herself testifies to a person’s pride: “I don’t agree that he has something that I don’t have.”

Laziness (this also includes carefully maintained despondency). Refusal to do something prevents a person from bringing good into the world, and then leads to deep disappointment in himself.

Suicide. Orthodoxy condemns this sin not only for the very fact of giving up life, but also for the fact that a person cannot atone for it. However, suicide should not be confused with a noble sacrifice. These are different things.

What sins are not forgiven by God. The fastest way to hell

The list goes on and on. It will never end. Any negative qualities of a person, for example, cowardice, are all sins against oneself.
