The Seven Deadly Sins: Cursed by the Light (Part 2) - plot description, ending explanation
The Seven Deadly Sins: Cursed by the Light is the 2nd installment of the anime film in the vast fantasy franchise The Seven Deadly Sins. The anime film is based on an original story created by Nakaba Suzuki, who also wrote and illustrated the original manga series.
Six months after the battle between the Seven Deadly Sins and the Demon King, the world was at peace. Meliodas and Elizabeth went on a trip to Britain together. The king marries Diana in the presence of their respective clans, Ban, Gowther, and human allies. Suddenly, groups of fairies and giants attack everyone who took part in the Holy War and played a role in its completion. Now Meliodas and the rest of the Sins must find the real reason for the attack before the wars between the clans begin again. Here's everything you need to know about the ending of The Seven Deadly Sins: Cursed by the Light. There will be spoilers ahead.
Brief description of the plot
In the prologue, a squad of demons guarding the entrance to the Demon Realm are destroyed by Dahlia, the second king of the Forest, and Dubs, one of the greatest masters of all time, belonging to the Giant Clan. After promising Batra that they would think about marriage and coronation as the new King and Queen of Liones, Meliodas and Elizabeth would revisit the places they had visited in Britain over the past 3,000 years. During their journey, they encounter Zeldris and Gelda, who also spend some time together before Zeldris takes the throne of the Demon Realm.

Although the brothers argue constantly, they are happy to see each other. Suddenly they sense a faint presence of magic and realize that the magical creature's life is about to end. They find the source and discover that it is a demon. Before dying, he reveals what happened in the Demon Realm, prompting the brothers to hastily return to their birthplace. They discover that the world has changed significantly. Dubs and Dahlia attack them, and the brothers soon realize that their opponents are much stronger than they should be. Dahlia almost kills Zeldris, but Gelda saves him. Meanwhile, Meliodas and Elizabeth are trapped among Dubs' henchmen.
In the Fairy King's Forest, an attacking army of giants and fairies interrupts the celebration following Diane and the King's wedding. Similar things happen in Liones and Camelot. The Sins soon realize that their attackers are being controlled by the magic emitted by their weapons. Ban uses Charge to take the weapon while the King Casts Seeds of Awakening, freeing the giants and fairies from mind control. Afterwards, they visit Liones to help their allies. In the Demon Realm, Zeldris frees his brother and Elizabeth from Dubs' minions.

Anime ending: who is behind the attacks? Why do they attack the warriors of the holy war?
It is later revealed that behind the attacks is the Supreme Deity, a primordial being created by Chaos itself along with the Demon King and the Sacred Tree. She created the Goddess Clan and is its ruler. When the mind-controlled giants and fairies attack, they manage to avoid harming those who have nothing to do with the Holy War, but only target the people who ended the war. This confuses the Sins as they realize that none of the attackers were in the war, so they have no reason to start it again.

Meanwhile, the Sins and the others remember that neither Dubs nor Dahlia had any interest in the Holy War. So they are stunned to see that they are leading the effort to restart it. It is only after Meliodas and Zeldris defeat Dahlia and Dubs that they realize that the latter two are also under the control of someone much more powerful than them.
Mael, the archangel of the Goddess Clan, figures out that the Supreme Deity himself is behind the attacks and tries to reach Earth to warn his friends. The Supreme Deity appears before Liones and causes complete destruction. No magical or physical abilities are effective against her. Even the Royal True Spirit Spear is ineffective against her. Eventually, Meliodas and Zeldris return to Earth and work together to bring down the Supreme Deity.
The Supreme Deity wants to start the Holy War again because she believes that the eternal battle between good and evil maintains balance and does not allow Chaos. She thinks that without the Holy War, Chaos will return to the world again. However, Meliodas has other ideas. When the Demon King took control of his body, he was able to look into his father's mind. He discovered that the Demon King and the Supreme Deity were gods born with the sole purpose of fighting each other forever. To them, the Holy War is just a game, and everyone involved in it is their pawns.

Is the Supreme Deity dead? Where does the film take place in the franchise's timeline?
Yes, the Supreme Deity is most likely dead. Elizabeth appears before her mother in her original form and tells her to leave and never return. She states that there was never love between them because otherwise the Supreme Deity would not have cursed her with Eternal Reincarnation. Subsequently, Meliodas and Zeldris use the Tyrant Kill Combo! to destroy the Supreme Deity. Unbeknownst to the other sins, Merlin is here too. She collects the essence of the Supreme Deity within her sacred treasure of Aldan. She declares that the age of the gods has come to an end.
In the timeline of the anime The Seven Deadly Sins, the film takes place between the events depicted in the series finale, after the Sins went their separate ways and before their reunion before Tristan, the son of Meliodas and Elizabeth. Additionally, the film depicts the wedding and coronation of Meliodas and Elizabeth.
Impressions from reading manga
It’s no coincidence that I’m talking about this manga right after my review of Berserk. The same technique is used here, let’s call it “not the holy saints.” Those who call themselves holy knights, instead of protecting people, tax them and do not value human lives. At the same time, the seven deadly sins turn out to be good guys, helping the rightful princess restore justice.
However, if in “Berserk” it looks new for the time of its creation and it is impossible to form an unambiguous opinion, then in the case of “Sins” the arrangement of good and evil is too striking and looks like a cliché.
In this manga, in principle, there are a lot of cliches and borrowings, as we will see later. Take, for example, the comic device with wanted posters that do not have a portrait resemblance to the real appearance of the characters (we could see this in “One Piece”).
Thus, Meliodas, depicted in the portrait as a stern adult man, in reality looks like a restless boy, in some moments looking more like the sin of lust than anger.
At this point it is worth making an explanation that each of the detachment is branded with its sin, associated with a certain animal. (It may also be noted here that Nakaba is not the first Japanese author to use the theme of sins.) But, as the plot shows, sins are assigned for events that happened to the characters in the past and have nothing to do with their character.
In the case of The Seven Deadly Sins manga, you will need to do a little analysis of the main characters to make it easier to see the pros and cons.
Characters
Let's start with Elizabeth.
Despite the fact that, as the main girl of a typical shonen, she remains on the sidelines of the battles, observing what is happening and waiting for salvation, we should analyze the personality of this character first, since it was with her that the sinful liberation campaign began. The heroines of such works, as a rule, take little part in the plot at all, completely overshadowed by their gentlemen, however, here Ellie is shown to us quite often, and therefore, in theory, she should somehow catch the readers. However, Elizabeth is a set of clichés characteristic of such heroines.
Firstly, she is a princess (oh, who wouldn’t like to watch royalty!), even though she is only the adopted daughter of a king. Its real origin is very mysterious, which will definitely emerge as the story progresses.
Secondly, the eye covered with bangs. As soon as Japanese manga artists do not manage to hide half of the heroine’s face, simplifying the proportional construction of the face. And, as you already understand, a superhuman force sleeps in Elizabeth’s hidden eye.
Third, motives and actions. We see a princess trying her best to prevent rebellion and chaos in her country. Wait, I already saw this somewhere... I remember Vivi from “One piece” did the same thing, but this cannot be called plagiarism. More like a template.
Nevertheless, no matter how unfinished Ellie’s character may be, overall she looks like a good heroine. At least it doesn't cause hostility or irritate. In many ways, her image is saved by sudden outbursts of courage and self-sacrifice, as well as her love for Meliodas.
Now let's look at Meliodas himself. Even his crew members admit that their captain is a dark horse. Of course (another cliché) Mel is not nearly as naive as he might seem at first glance. Behind his spontaneous smile hides mental anguish and memories of earlier days.
However, Meliodas is not one of those characters who are able to withdraw into themselves for a long time; instead, he drinks with friends with or without reason, touches Elizabeth’s charms and enjoys life. But we should not forget that at the same time, as in any shonen main character, this guy contains a source of incredible and destructive power for those around him.
The next character, although not a sin, acts as a constant companion to the team. This is a talking pig named Hawk (in another transliteration - Hork). You can call it one of the features of manga; even the author, addressing readers, portrays himself in this image.
While others flaunt their titles, Hawk proudly calls himself the “Knight of Scraps.” This pig is also attached to Elizabeth and binds Meliodas for trying to molest her. Overall, he’s a pretty funny character, the only downside of which is that the jokes in his arsenal are often repetitive and boring.
Another literally weighty heroine is Diana, a cute little giant girl. A character who, for me personally, looks more interesting than the main character. And this is not so much because of her high combat potential and valor (which she undoubtedly possesses), but because of her past and love story, which is more touching than the main one.
The Sin that has the biggest following among Japanese readers is King, or Harlequin to be precise. This charming, charismatic boy is also the king of the fairies, turning into a huge fat man in moments of great excitement. If you read his story, you will understand why many, including the author of the review, are impressed by this character.
The last of the “sins” about which you can already form an unambiguous opinion is the sin of greed, Ban. In the past he was a criminal, in the present he is a hero tormented by a sense of love and duty. Although I would hardly call his love story convincing.
The reason Ban is interesting to watch is his immortality. And not just forever young and not so that he dies when his head is cut off, like a vampire. In the case of this hero, all methods of killing are useless.
Thanks to Ban's presence in the action scenes, there is at least some hint of the actual carnage that shonen films usually lack.
So, characters that are a collection of clichés still arouse the interest of readers. Let's talk a little about why manga attracts fans so much.
Escanor: character abilities
Escanor has the innate ability to store energy from the sun. As he accumulates, his strength and muscles grow, so at noon the hero is at the peak of his capabilities. Here are the abilities Escanor has:
- Aura of light. The warrior's huge body emits high-temperature light that can melt even stone and protect it from the attacks of dark forces.
- Protection from soul capture. If an enemy tries to take possession of Escanor's soul, he will pay a cruel price. The power of light burns him from the inside.
- The Power of Intimidation. At the moment of attack, Escanor reaches incredible size, which makes the enemy want to run away. Sometimes enemies feel like the sun is coming towards them.
- Pseudo-Transformation. The power of thought allows Escanor to manifest his capabilities even at night. But the time of their use is limited, the character quickly weakens.
- Merciless sun. This ability gives the hero the ability to control a small sun. Holding a clot of energy in his hands, Escanor attacks the enemy. As a result, those who survive the attack fly over the horizon or burn to the ground. In addition, the character can move through the air in the sun.
- Flame of Pride. By making the sun glow in his hands, Escanor creates a powerful heat wave. This power can even evaporate an entire lake.
- The only one. At noon, the hero's powers reach full power, causing his body to expand to incredible sizes and emit sunlight. Such a transformation requires a strong load on the body; after use, Escanor falls exhausted.
- Crazy Pride. The character is able to hit a large area, releasing many small suns from the body.

Escanor can also use the power of his hand as a weapon. In a state of power, he cuts the enemy in half with a wave of his hand or pierces his finger with his finger, like a spear.
