The name Kira in the Saints
In the Orthodox name book, this name appears 1 time - March 13. It is both secular and ecclesiastical.
Meaning of the name
Kira is derived from the Greek male name Kiros and the female name Kyria, meaning “lady”, “mistress”.
This is the generally accepted version. In Japan, the name is interpreted as “shining.” It may be a derived form from the Indian Kirana, which means "ray of light".
According to the Irish version, Kira means “dark-haired”, and from ancient Persian it is translated as “sun”.
Name options: Kiryusha, Kirusya.
After the October Revolution in Russia, the name received a patriotic interpretation. It was deciphered as follows: K - communism, I - international, R - revolution.
Main features
Strictness, clarity, strength, pressure - this is what is noted when meeting Kira for the first time. However, she cannot be called an iron lady, because behind the external severity hides a vulnerable soul.
Character
Despite the fact that of the two consonant sounds present in the name, one is soft, the name remains hard and cold. And it is all the more surprising that behind his severity hides a sensitive, responsive nature. If Kira decides to help, she will do everything in her power. You can share your secrets with her, but she herself will open her soul to few people. Self-control, exactingness, intelligence, rationalism, and the ability to concentrate give positive results: bearers of the name become highly qualified workers. Unfortunately, luck and fortune often pass by, so you have to achieve your intended goal on your own, relying only on your own strength.
Significant character flaws include:
- lack of diplomacy and sense of humor;
- straightforwardness;
- inability to negotiate.
Excessive directness and demandingness interfere not only with career advancement, but also with family life. Often a woman makes the wrong conclusions and “delivers an unfair trial,” after which she is tormented by the insult caused.
Holy Martyr Princess Kira Obolenskaya
In the previous issue, the topic of teaching was touched upon, for several saints, whose faces we see in the Assumption Church, dedicated their earthly lives to teaching children. Each of these teachers, who was subsequently awarded canonization, carried out her service highly, not only not seeking earthly reward, but also consciously renouncing personal female happiness. All of them devoted themselves entirely to Christian service to children, always poor, and often completely disadvantaged.
And on a par with peasant women and daughters of simple rural priests, such as Iraida Tikhova, Anna (in the world Maria) Blagoveshchenskaya, Arsenia (in the world Anna) Dobronravova, stands Princess Kira Ivanovna Obolenskaya - a direct descendant of the ancient prince Rurik. Yes, the family of the Obolensky princes is the oldest and one of the most noble in the Russian Empire. But the princess-teacher Kira Ivanovna Obolenskaya never showed the height of her position to anyone, being equally modest, humble, delicate and kind in dealing with everyone.
She receives an excellent education in the capital, graduating from the Nikolaev branch of the Smolny Institute. At that time (the twentieth century began), young Smolensk students took a course of disciplines akin to the gymnasium, but with expanded teaching of pedagogy (in gymnasiums they studied it only in an additional class), the so-called new languages - French and German (the ancient languages of Greek and Latin were also studied) , as well as a course in secular ethics. Handicrafts were also taught at Smolny; its graduates were by no means pampered and idle white-handed people. Many of them later, during the hard times, were helped to survive by the skills acquired at Smolny.
Somewhat earlier, Kira Obolenskaya studied at the Alexander branch of the same Institute of Noble Maidens, the merchant daughter Ekaterina Urtieva. Many years later, according to God’s Providence, it was these two Smolensk women, who experienced a lot and suffered bitter losses, while being involved in one case, only two of them survived among many, not being afraid of slander, torment and a death sentence.
But then, at the beginning of the century, young Kira completes her studies with a silver medal. She can teach in a prestigious private gymnasium or be a home teacher in a rich house, but she chooses otherwise and spends her entire life (except for several years of being banned from the profession) teaching poor children. Princess Kira Obolenskaya works as a teacher in a rural school at the Popovka station, in a school on the working outskirts in Ligovka, in a school for children from working families of the Triangle plant. On one of the subsequently painted icons, the New Martyr Cyrus is depicted surrounded by children from the common people.
This truly Christian service is natural for a deeply religious person, which Kira Ivanovna Obolenskaya was throughout her short life. She was not broken by losses or the death of the Empire, which all her ancestors honestly served for centuries. During the Great War, her brothers Vadim and Boris died, the Civil War took the life of her brother Georgy, an officer in the Volunteer Army, and forever separated her from her brother Pavel, who managed to escape from execution and went to France. Kira Ivanovna herself taught, as in former times.
After the death of her father, she remains almost the only support for her elderly mother Elizaveta Georgievna and her sick sister Varya. Living in Petrograd, Kira Ivanovna becomes a member of the Alexander Nevsky Brotherhood at the Feodorovsky Cathedral. There she meets her future prisoner Ekaterina Andreevna Arskaya (nee Urtieva), who by that time had lost her husband and all five children.
By the thirtieth year, marked by the first arrest of Kira Ivanovna, she was deprived of the right to teach at school and was listed as a librarian there. Her fault lies only in her princely origin. This also becomes the reason for the arrest. During the investigation, Kira Ivanovna showed amazing courage, declaring disagreement with the policies of the Soviet state due to the persecution of believers and because of the terrible collectivization policy pursued at that time. The result is five years of camps, of which she serves four years in the north, having worked the entire term first as a nurse and then again as a teacher.
Having been released in 1934, Kira Ivanovna was deprived of the right to live in large cities of the USSR and settled on the 101st kilometer of Leningrad, in a small ancient town in the Novgorod region called Borovichi. She is teaching children again. The bloody 37th is coming. In one place, after several terms of imprisonment, prisons and camps, deprived of the right to live in big cities, “former” people, former merchants, white officers, university professors and the priesthood, are gathered. How convenient it is to crush them all under the bloody steamroller of the punitive machine, which was gaining unprecedented momentum in the fall of ’37!
The case of a conspiracy to establish a fascist system was crudely fabricated at the end of October, on the anniversary of the coup. Sixty people were arrested. Among them are the princess-teacher Kira Ivanovna Obolenskaya and the widow of an officer, merchant daughter Ekaterina Andreevna Arskaya. An investigation is underway using “special investigative methods.” People are being tortured. And almost no one can stand it. Of these sixty innocent sufferers, only two fragile women - 47-year-old Kira Obolenskaya and the second from Smolensk, 62-year-old Ekaterina Arskaya - endure to the end, withstand all the torture and confrontations with perjury, but do not sign a single testimony either against themselves or against others . And after two months of a terrible and absurd investigation, they are sentenced to death.
Princess Kira Ivanovna Obolenskaya was awarded martyrdom on December 17, 1937. The absurd case was recognized as fabricated already in the 50s, when only one of those involved in it remained alive.
Princess Kira Obolenskaya was canonized among the new martyrs and confessors of Russia for church-wide veneration in 2003. On one of the icons, the martyr Kira of Petrograd is depicted with the martyr Ekaterina of Petrograd - two very fragile women who once graduated from the Institute of Noble Maidens, who worked all their lives, steadfastly believed in Christ and were not afraid of cruel executioners.
