Shem and Ham. Why Noah condemned and cursed his own son Ham

In the Bible we know such a character as Noah. Noah is the last and tenth of the antediluvian Old Testament patriarchs, who descended in a direct line from Adam himself, the first man on Earth.

According to the Bible, we know that Noah was a righteous man in his generation, for this he was saved from the global flood. It was he who became the successor of the entire human race.

Lines from the Bible about the children of Noah (chapter 9).

“...Noah woke up from his wine and learned what his youngest son had done to him, and said: Cursed is Canaan; He will be a servant of servants to his brothers. Then he said: Blessed is the Lord God of Shem; Canaan will be his slave; May God spread Japheth, and may he dwell in the tents of Shem; Canaan will be his slave..."

Shem, Ham, Japheth and their father - Noah, one of the antediluvian Old Testament patriarchs, who descended in a direct line from Adam himself

Noah's name means "comfort"

According to the Bible, at the time when Noah lived, people had not yet lost contact with the True God and therefore lived a long time. The first man, Adam, lived almost 1000 years. His descendants lived from 600 to 800 years. Therefore, Noah’s father, Lamech, could have been a contemporary of Adam, although he was 9 generations removed from the first man.

600 years: how many years Noah lived at the beginning of the flood

undefined

From the Bible we know that the name Noah means “comfort” (in Hebrew - Noah). This meant that hopes were placed on Noah related to the fate of people. The human race moved further and further away from God, indulging in passions and vices.

Noah, according to the Bible, “walked with God” in faith. He really should have served as a consolation for everyone, reminding them of the Truth with his life. But his contemporaries did not listen to Noah.

About the film “Noah”, or what is the sin of Ham.

The film “Noah”, whose original title is “Noah” (in the Hebrew transliteration of this biblical name), cannot leave anyone indifferent.

It turns out that we are all Semites! This is the main component of the plot of the film by American director Darren Aronofsky.

It turns out that only Shem, one of the sons of Noah, entered the ark along with his wife.

Noah's two other sons were not so lucky.

But Shem's wife gives birth to twins on the ark? And this means that the human race will continue, and precisely from the children of Shem.

But the most interesting thing is next! It turns out that Noah is not the herald of possible salvation in the ark, which (the ark) in the Christian tradition is a prototype of the Church. Against! He (Noah) very aggressively resists any attempts to break into the ark by non-family members.

And moreover, he dooms his family members to death in every possible way, and even tries to kill the grandchildren born in the ark.

Of course, the plot of the film has nothing to do with the biblical Noah, and if it weren’t for Russell Crowley’s wonderful performance, I would have considered that my evening at the cinema was in vain.

Now let's turn to the biblical text itself, which tells about the events of the Flood, and to the true story of the biblical Noah:

“This is the life of Noah: Noah was a righteous man and blameless in his generation; Noah walked with God. Noah gave birth to three sons: Shem, Ham and Japheth. But the earth was corrupted before the face of God, and the earth was filled with atrocities. And [the Lord] God looked upon the earth, and behold, it was corrupt, for all flesh had perverted its way on the earth” (Genesis 6:9-12).

So, you and I read that “Noah walked with God.” What does it mean? The literal translation would be: Noah walked with God, that is, he seemed to rely on God - he could not have survived in that situation on his own! Noah walked where the Lord directed him, so it would be more correct to say that Noah walked after God: where the Lord directed him, that’s where he went.

Was Noah a righteous and blameless man from the point of view of the Christian faith? Quite a difficult question. Because it is said that he “was a righteous man and blameless in his generation.” This addition: “in his kind” tells us that if Noah had lived in a different time, perhaps he would have been considered a sinner. But in his kind, in his generation, he was the best person. There was no more pious man. And if he had lived in the days of Moses, Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, perhaps the attitude towards him would have been completely different. But you can understand these words: “in his generation” in another way: even in such a generation, at such times, he remained righteous and this will be another characteristic of Noah.

This is due to the fact that an entire generation of people became corrupted, and it was very difficult to maintain righteousness and integrity. The Hebrew word for “righteous” is “tzaddik,” which means “whole person.” Since the word “tzaddik” and the word “tzedakah” (“alms”) are similar, a righteous person is, first of all, one who gives, sacrifices, borrows, that is, lives more in the interests of others than his own, and first of all gives all of his life in service to God. But in any case, this expression: “in his kind” somehow sets off everything that was said above about Noah.

The name Noah means “comfort.” “Noach” – “one who comforts in sorrow.” His father Lamech, which means “weakness,” gave him this name because the crisis had already arrived everywhere. First, a moral crisis took hold of the Cainites (the wicked descendants of Cain), then this process spreads to the Sethites (the descendants of the righteous Seth), and even the names of these lines coincide. And Lamech, Noah's father, places his hope in him. And gives him a name, which is also a spiritual characteristic.

The Holy Fathers believed that then names were given in prophetic insight; the name meant the spiritual characteristics of a person.

And then Noah gave birth to three sons: Shem, Ham and Japheth. The name Shem - in Hebrew "Shem" - is translated as "one who glorified his name." And indeed, the entire Jewish people descends from Shem: this is a galaxy of God’s prophets and apostles of Jesus Christ, whose names are known throughout the world. And from Shem - through Abraham and Hagar - comes the entire Arab world.

Noah's other son is Ham. The sons of Noah are the ancestors of the human races, and it is very important for us to understand their racial characteristics. “Ham” means “heat,” “heat,” “passion.” From Ham came the Negroids.

And the third son of Noah, a very important person for us, Japheth, “Yephet” in Hebrew. This name means “beauty” and comes from the word “yafe” - “beautiful”. It also means “spreading”, “expansion”, from the verb “pota” - “to give space”.

Indeed, the European peoples of the so-called Indo-Aryan group descend from Japheth. These peoples are the most widespread throughout the world, the entire Western Hemisphere is the descendants of Japheth (North and South America), all of Europe. If you open Nestor’s “Tale of Bygone Years,” then Nestor writes that the Slavs are from Japheth. And indeed, those civilizations that were created by the Japhethians were the ancient civilizations of Greece, Rome, it was a beautiful world... And when this world became churched, then all the best that the Japhethians achieved, they churched and brought into the Christian Church. Japheth is also the civilization of Holy Rus'!

So, the sons of Noah - Shem, Ham and Japheth - are the ancestors of the human races.

“And [the Lord] God looked upon the earth, and behold, it was corrupt, for all flesh had perverted its way on the earth” (Genesis 6:12). How to understand these words? Interpreters say that sexual perversions were very strong then. And not only among humans, but also among animals. Some wild confusion has begun! This is also due to the fact that the two lines - Sethites and Cainites - began to mix, and this is unacceptable, when unbelieving daughters-in-law or unbelieving grooms are taken into the house of believers, this is unacceptable! And chaos entered the world, and the Flood occurs...

And when the Flood ended, eight souls were saved from the waters: Noah, his wife named Noema, Shem, Ham, Japheth with their wives. The fact that Noah had a wife, Noema, is only a version. The fact is that Noema belonged to the Cainites (Gen. 4:22). And those commentators who claim that she was the wife of Noah build their assumptions only on the basis that it is outwardly difficult to explain why the name Noem suddenly appears in the genealogies of the Cainites. And this name is close in root to the name Noah (Noah), such as Oleg - Olga. And they concluded that Noema was Noah’s wife. And through her, these Hamitic bloods penetrated into the new world, but it was not possible to drown it all. In church, sometimes the words of prayer are said: “Cleanse me from demonic blood, Lord!”, which is what is meant.

But there is, however, a text in the Bible that says: “Beware, my son, of every form of debauchery. Take for yourself a wife from the tribe of your fathers, but do not take a foreign wife who is not from the tribe of your father, for we are the sons of the prophets. From ancient times our fathers were Noah, Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. Remember, my son, that they all took wives from among their brothers and were blessed with their children, and their descendants will inherit the earth” (Tob. 4:12). At least, there is such a version that through Noah the world of Cain entered, passing through the waters of the Flood, to a new earth...

And so people come out of the ark. It is said: “And God blessed Noah and his sons and said to them: be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth [and subdue it]” (Genesis 9: 1). This is where it is very important for us to pay attention to the fact that when they left the ark, God blessed them. There is a teaching of the Church (this, in fact, is a biblical teaching): what God has blessed, man has no right to curse.

And then people begin to live on earth, God gives them different laws, including the so-called “Laws of Noah.” The Noahide Laws are considered binding on all people, believers and non-believers. It is believed that on the Day of Judgment these laws will be asked of everyone. These laws are placed in the 9th chapter.

It says here: “Let all the beasts of the earth fear and tremble at you, [and all the livestock of the earth], and all the birds of the air, everything that moves on the earth, and all the fish of the sea: into your hands they have been given; everything that moves and lives will be food for you; I give you everything like green herbs” (Genesis 9:2-3). That is, before the Flood, people did not eat meat. And only after the Flood did God command people to eat meat.

Next come the following laws of Noah: “Only you shall not eat flesh with its life or its blood” (Genesis 9:4). It is impossible, if the soul is still in the animal, that is, the blood has not been drained, to cut off a piece, fry it and eat it. Blood in any form is not allowed for consumption! This is a tough law. It is said: “I will also require your blood, in which is your life” (Gen. 9:5).

This law is confirmed in the Mosaic Law, this law is confirmed in the book of the Acts of the Holy Apostles, at the First Apostolic Council in Jerusalem, when it was decreed that Christians “... abstain from that which is defiled by idols, from fornication, from things strangled and from blood...” (Acts 15:20 ). What is "strangled"? - This is when the blood is not drained. And in the rules of the Church of Local and Ecumenical Councils it is said: “If a bishop, presbyter, or deacon tastes blood, let him be deposed. If a layman eats blood, he will be excommunicated from the Church.”[1] That is, at all levels: after the Flood this was established, and Moses confirmed it, and the prophets speak about it, and the Apostolic Council confirmed it, and the rules of the Local and Ecumenical Councils, and the Holy Fathers repeatedly confirmed this rule, because blood is always modest! Therefore, Christians cannot eat any blood sausages, blood sausages, or bloody steaks.

Further it is said: “I will also exact your blood, in which your life is, I will exact it from every beast (that is, if a beast gores a person, the law says, then this beast must be killed - O.S.), I will also exact the soul of a person from the hand man, by the hand of his brother” (Gen. 9:5). Here the Bible establishes the death penalty for murder; the murderer must be killed. This is the first such testimony from the word of God.

By the way, a very interesting detail: the ancients, who studied Scripture very carefully, paid attention to the fact that if some phenomenon is described in the Bible for the first time, then this is a key situation. If you later want to understand what this phenomenon means, pay attention to its first description. Then you will understand what we are talking about.

“Whoever sheds human blood, his blood will be shed by the hand of man (that is, there must be a fair judgment - O.S.): for man was created in the image of God” (Genesis 9:6). Here the status of a person is established. An ancient tradition adds to the commandments of Noah the prohibition of fornication, idolatry and blasphemy.

And further God confirms: “But you be fruitful and multiply, and spread throughout the earth, and multiply in it” (Genesis 9:7). This commandment: “be fruitful and multiply” stops fornication. This commandment is against fornication. Because the Scripture says: “it is better to marry than to become inflamed” (1 Cor. 7:9). And this commandment: “be fruitful and multiply” teaches us that, as many children as God sends, there should be so many. If it were said: “be fruitful,” then it would be enough to have one child, well, two: one boy, one girl. But here it says: “multiply”! And it is also added: “and spread” - this is definitely more than one or two. That is, as many as the Lord sends, there should be as many children.

So, the family lives in the Ararat valley. And it is said: “These three were the sons of Noah, and from them the whole earth was peopled” (Gen. 9:19). That is, we are all their descendants, and Shem, Ham and Japheth are the ancestors of the human races.

And then it tells about one family crisis that happened to Noah and which entailed dire consequences for members of his family, for some of them.

“Noah began to cultivate the land and planted a vineyard; and he drank wine and became drunk, and lay naked in his tent” (Gen. 9:20-21). And some say that Noah, since this is the first mention of wine, did not know what wine was. He planted a vineyard, made juice, left pots of juice in the sun, they fermented, and it turned out to be wine.

“And he drank wine and became drunk, and lay naked in his tent. And Ham, the father of Canaan, saw his father’s nakedness, and went out and told his two brothers” (Gen. 9:21-22).

Why is Ham called the father of Canaan? There is such an interpretation: when they were in the ark, floating for quite a long time, they made a vow that during the voyage they would not enter into sexual relations with their wives.

And only Ham broke this vow and from this violation Canaan was born. Because no one else's children are mentioned.

In the film “Noah”, for some reason Sim sins with this...

“And Ham, the father of Canaan, saw his father’s nakedness, and went out and told his two brothers” (Gen. 9:22). And here the question arises: how should we feel if we see the nudity of our parents? If we see the nakedness of our father, mother, if we see the nakedness of our spiritual fathers, shepherds and archpastors, seeing (hearing) how some rumors are heard that one or another has committed some terrible sin?

Noah was primarily the religious leader of this community. He was a real patriarch in his family. Does grace work through unworthy servants of the Church? Ephraim the Syrian writes that even if someone who has accepted the priesthood is unworthy, grace still continues to operate. And when Noah behaved unworthily, his sons had to literally turn a blind eye to what happened.

Ham's act of condemning his father gave the name to this crime. Anyone who does not respect elders is called a boor. What Ham does is truly rudeness in the full sense of the word!

“And Ham the father of Canaan saw the nakedness of his father, and went out and told his two brothers. Shem and Japheth took the clothes and, putting them on their shoulders, walked backwards (actually, closing their eyes - O.S.) and covered the nakedness of their father; their faces were turned back, and they did not see their father’s nakedness. Noah woke up from his wine and learned what his youngest son had done to him” (Gen. 9:22-24).

And then we read words that are a little incomprehensible: “And he said: Cursed is Canaan; He will be a servant of servants to his brothers” (Gen. 9:25). Noah does not curse Ham, he curses the son of Ham, his grandson Canaan. Why? But because when they left the ark, God blessed them all! And what God has blessed, no one has the right to curse.

So the curse falls not on Ham, but on Canaan. “and said (Noah - O.S.): Cursed is Canaan; He will be a servant of servants to his brothers” (Gen. 9:25)! And indeed, brothers and sisters: Africa is the land of Ham! You know how these peoples live - they are still tormented by this curse that fell on the whole race of Negroids.

It goes on to say: “Then he said, Blessed be the Lord God of Shem; Canaan will be his slave” (Genesis 9:26). He blesses Sim for doing the right thing and not wanting to see his father's nakedness.

Next it says about Japheth, our forefather, from whom we descended, the Slavs: “May God spread Japheth, and may he dwell in the tents of Shem; Canaan will be his slave” (Gen. 9:27). So, the name Japheth - we have already found out - means “widespread”, “beautiful”, but what do the words mean that Japheth will dwell in the tents of Shem? After all, if you literally understand the meaning of these words: he will not just move in, he will host the tents of Shem, move. What is the “tent[2] of Shem”? This is the Holy Scripture, which was written by Semites, people of Jewish nationality. And in Jesus Christ the nations descended from Japheth received the Holy Scriptures as their inheritance (Isa. 29:11-12; 2 Pet. 2:10). We are the new children of Abraham! And the Jews “... when they read Moses, a veil lies over their heart; but when they turn to the Lord, then this veil is removed” (2 Cor. 3:15-16). They do not fully understand the meaning of Divine Revelation. Only in the Christian Church is the fullness of the Revelation of the word of God given.

But the entire Old Testament is the history of the Old Testament Church! And in the 10th chapter, 21st verse, it is said: “Shem, the father of all the sons of Eber, also had children (here, for the first time the name “Eber” appears, from which the word “Jew” will later be derived - O.S.)” (Gen. 10, 21). That is, Japheth had not yet moved into the tents of Shem - the true religion was for a long time the property of only the Jewish people. But after the day of Pentecost, many nations joined this faith (Matthew 29:19).

If we return to the discussion about the film, then without a doubt any attempt to distort biblical reality, especially in describing the life of the prophets, is the sin of the Hams.

To be honest, when they showed naked Noah (i.e. actor Russell Crowley), I, remembering Ham’s sin, immediately hastened to close my eyes.

And I was upset: why did I come here?

It took Noah 100 years to build his ark.

Noah began building the ark - a huge ship that was supposed to house animals and people.

It is believed that the length of the ark exceeded 150 m, the width was about 25. The height of the ship was about 15 m.

100 years

it took so long to build a giant ship

The Bible does not say whether Noah preached repentance during these years. The Holy Fathers suggest that the righteous man was given such an opportunity. But no one wanted to change their life.

By command of God, the animals gathered into an ark

After 100 years, Noah received a new revelation about the imminent beginning of the flood. Then animals, birds, and reptiles miraculously began to flock to him. When they entered the ark, God gave the people 7 more days to repent. But everyone continued to go about their business.

The waters of the flood poured out onto the earth for 40 days

A fragment of I.K. Aivazovsky’s painting “The Flood”
After 7 days, rain began all over the earth. It lasted 40 days. John Chrysostom writes that these 40 days were the last chance for people to repent.

There were no windows in the ark: the Lord saved Noah from having to see the death of people

Noah's contemporaries had the opportunity to repent at least before death. Orthodox St. The fathers believe that such people, of course, existed.

The descendants of Shem began to be called Semites, Japheth Japhethites, Hama Hamites

The descendants of Shem began to be called Semites. These include the Jewish people who retained true faith in God. The descendants of Japheth are the Japhethites. These include the peoples who inhabit Europe. It was they who accepted faith in Christ from the Jews. The descendants of Ham are called Hamites. These include the Canaanite tribes that originally inhabited Palestine, and many peoples of Africa.

As we see, in this situation, Noah’s son Ham acted very badly. Only evil and cruel children mock the actions of their parents. For which he paid.

But let us examine in more detail the relationships between three great people in the history of mankind - Shem, Ham and Japheth. Before talking about them, we need to consider the aspirations of all three.

Shem, Ham and Japheth - three brothers who were very different people

Initially, the meaning of their names also follows. Shem is a priest, a spiritual person. All his thoughts are aimed at the physical side of existence. Japheth is a soulful person, but he is also a bearer of beauty and harmony. It was not without reason that they said that the people who descended from Japheth were considered the guardians of beauty and the most perfect art.

The brothers Shem and Ham and Japheth were different from each other. What happened after? Then they all lived in one country, not far from the Ararat Mountains, and all spoke the same language. But when the human race became numerous, quarrels began to occur between people, so they decided that they would soon have to disperse throughout the entire Earth.

The water stood on the ground for a whole year

It is believed that the water did not leave the land for a whole year. How did Noah live all this time? Imprisoned in the ark, unable to even see the sky, Noah had to endure great tribulation. He also regretted the dying people.

This is what Noah's Ark supposedly looked like

Only after 150 days did the water begin to recede. Another month later, Noah felt that the movement of the ark had stopped. Scripture names the place where the ark stopped: Mount Ararat on the border of what is now Armenia and Turkey.

For another two months, Noah did not dare to leave the ark, awaiting God’s command. His faith and trust in God was absolute. Apparently, they were still strengthened during the year spent without light, among the waves, in one hope in the Lord. Only after a direct instruction from the Lord did Noah come to earth. His wife, sons and their wives came out with him.

Coming to solid ground, Noah made a sacrifice to God

This is how the Renaissance artist Raphael saw Noah's sacrifice.
Noah's first action after leaving the ark was a sacrifice to God. Grateful to the Lord for his salvation, Noah built an altar and sacrificed all kinds of clean, that is, suitable for sacrifice, birds and animals.

The Bible calls this disposition of Noah's soul a "pleasant aroma" that "the Lord smelt." The Lord blessed Noah and his family to populate the earth. His sons, Shem, Ham and Japheth, became the ancestors of post-Flood humanity.

The flood lasted forty days and forty nights

This flood lasted 40 days and 40 nights, after which the waters of the flood lifted the ark and it floated. The water was so high that the ark floating on its surface was higher than the very mountain peaks. Naturally, it becomes clear that all life on earth perished in the waters of the flood. Only Noah and his companions remained.

After 150 days, the water gradually began to decrease, and on the 17th day of the 7th month the ark stopped. He landed on the rocks of the Ararat Mountains. But even after this, Noah still waited another 40 days, and then sent out the first raven. The raven, not finding sushi, returned back each time.

To find out when it was possible to go on land, Noah sent one dove at a time. One day a dove flew in with a Maslenitsa branch, and then Noah realized that the water was gradually beginning to recede.

So Noah released the dove three times. The first time the dove came with nothing, the second time the dove brought a fresh olive leaf in its beak. Then Noah realized that the water had begun to recede from the earth. The third time the dove did not return at all.

When the ground finally dried out, the family was able to go ashore. After Noah left the ark, the first thing he did was thank God. Here's what the Bible says about it:

“And Noah went out, and his sons, and his wife, and his sons’ wives with him; Every beast, and every creeping thing, and every bird, everything that moved on the earth, according to their kinds, came out of the ark. And Noah built an altar to the Lord; and he took of every clean animal and of every clean bird, and offered them as burnt offerings on the altar. And the Lord smelled a pleasant aroma, and the Lord said in His heart: I will no longer curse the earth for man’s sake, because the thought of man’s heart is evil from his youth...”

After the flood, the first thing Noah did was to thank God for his salvation.
He built an altar to God. It was after this that the Lord promised to return the world to the previous order of things, and would never again devastate the earth for the guilt of people. After this, he blessed Noah and all his descendants for further human creation. The Lord also promised that He would no longer destroy the human race with the waters of the flood. And as a sign of this divine covenant, a rainbow shone in the heavens.

After the flood, Noah lived 350 years, cursed one of his sons and blessed the others

The Bible says little about Noah's life after the flood. It is known how many years the forefather lived after the flood - 350.

Another episode has been reported. Noah, who was engaged in agriculture, planted a vineyard, grew berries and made wine.

He tried wine for the first time, got drunk and fell asleep naked in the tent.

His son Ham saw this. The son laughed at his father and told his brothers about what had happened.

But the sons of the righteous man, taking their clothes, entered the tent, walking backwards so as not to see their father’s nakedness, and covered him. Waking up, Noah learned about Ham's act and pronounced a curse on his son, who did not respect his parent. The word “rudeness” comes from Ham’s name, meaning an extreme display of disrespect.

Each of Noah's sons had children

Japheth had 7 sons:

“...After the flood their children were born. The sons of Japheth: Gomer, Magog, Madai, Javan, Tubal, Meshech and Tiras. Sons of Gomer: Askenaz, Riphat and Togarmah. The sons of Javan: Elisha, Tarshish, Kittim and Dodanim... From these the islands of nations were inhabited in their lands, each according to his own language, according to his tribes, among his nations...”

Homer was the progenitor of the Cimmerians, who initially began to settle on the shores of the Caspian Sea. The Prophet Ezekiel said that the descendants of Homer lived in the Northern Aisles. His other children settled partly in Armenia. Homer's children lived in Turkey.

Homer, the son of Japheth, was the progenitor of the Cimmerians, who initially began to settle on the shores of the Caspian Sea

Ham and Japheth also had sons of their own. Ham had four sons. His descendants settled in the southwestern part of Asia and Africa. The Bible very often speaks of Africa as the land of Ham and his children. One of Ham's sons, Cush, had an excellent sense of smell. He was a very good trapper:

“...The sons of Ham: Cush, Mizraim, Puth and Canaan. The sons of Cush: Seba, Havilah, Sabtah, Raam and Sabteh. Sons of Raam: Sheba and Dedan. Cush also gave birth to Nimrod: he began to be strong on earth. He was a mighty hunter before the Lord; That’s why it is said: a mighty hunter is like Nimrod before the Lord...”

Shem had 5 sons:

“...Shem, the father of all the sons of Eber, the elder brother of Japheth, also had children. The sons of Shem: Elam, Asur, Arphaxad, Lud, Aram...”

Elam is the ancient name of Persia, which was previously the ancient name of Iran.

The rainbow became a sign of God's covenant with people

Even after the flood, people did not stop committing sins. But according to the Bible, God promised never again to bring a disastrous flood on the earth.

A rainbow in the clouds became a sign of the covenant between God and people

Scripture says that the sign of God's covenant with humanity was the rainbow. Interpretations of these words of the Bible are ambiguous. Some suggest that before the flood there was no rain, and there was no rainbow as an atmospheric phenomenon. Then this fragment of the Bible testifies that the nature of the planet after the flood changed sharply and radically.

All peoples of the world have legends about the global flood.

We know that the global flood really happened not only thanks to biblical stories. Many peoples have a legend about the flood: the Sumerians, the tribes of America, India, China, the Greeks, the Egyptians and many others.

There is also scientific data about some kind of planetary catastrophe that happened 5-8 thousand years ago. It is evidenced by a sharp, 140 m, rise in the level of the Black Sea around 5500 BC.

But the memory of a worldwide catastrophe is also the memory of a man who, almost alone against the whole world, remained with his faith in God. No matter how difficult it is, how hard it is to preserve your soul and heart among the stormy waves of the sea of life - it is possible. Noah, whose name means “comfort,” continues to give people hope for a better future.

God informed Noah in advance that he was going to destroy all life on Earth

God informed Noah in advance that he was going to destroy all life on earth, and gave him precise instructions on how to build the ark. The Ark was a wooden vessel that could survive the global flood. When all the preparations for the ark were ready, God commanded Noah to take with him a pair from each type of animal and bird into the ark.

Here's what the Bible says about it:

“...And God looked upon the earth, and behold, it was corrupt, for all flesh had perverted its way on the earth. And God said to Noah: The end of all flesh is come before Me, for the earth is filled with evildoings from them; and behold, I will destroy them from the earth. Make yourself an ark of gopher wood; make compartments in the ark and coat it with pitch inside and outside...And behold, I will bring a flood of water on the earth to destroy all flesh in which is the spirit of life under the heavens; everything on earth will lose life.

But I will establish My covenant with you, and you and your sons and your wife and your sons’ wives will come into the ark with you. Bring also into the ark two of every living creature, and of every flesh, so that they may remain alive with you; let them be male and female. Of birds according to their kinds, and of cattle according to their kinds, and of every thing that creeps on the earth according to their kind, two of every kind will come to you, so that you may live. Take for yourself all the food that people eat, and gather it for you; and it will be food for you and for them...”

God allowed Noah to take his family and each creature into the ark in pairs.
Death awaited the rest on earth. And then the 17th day came, this is what the Bible writes to us:

“...In the six hundredth year of Noah’s life, in the second month, on the seventeenth day of the month, on that day all the sources of the great deep burst open, and the windows of heaven were opened; and rain fell on the earth for forty days and forty nights...”
