Temple of Unexpected Joy in Maryina Roshcha. Schedule of services, photos

History of construction

It was no coincidence that the “Unexpected Joy” Church appeared in Maryina Roshcha, because this particular area has always been known for its robbers and bandits.

Temple of Unexpected Joy in Maryina Roshcha

This area was once part of a large forest area. The first mentions of Maryina Roshcha are found in documents dating back to the 14th century. In the 17th century here were the hunting grounds of Prince Cherkassky, the second cousin of Tsar Alexei Mikhailovich, and from the end of the 19th century. these places begin to be populated by working people.

The initiators of the construction of the church were the inhabitants of the village. The temple was conceived as a church-school, where residents could pray and their children learn to read and write. In this regard, in 1901, by order of Count Alexander Dmitrievich Sheremetyev (grandson of Count N.P. Sheremetyev and serf actress Praskovya Ivanovna Zhemchugova), a plot of land with an area of about 850 square meters was allocated for the construction of the church. m.

Little is known about the creation of the temple. Funds for its construction were collected all over the world. Project of a building in the style of single-domed churches of the 17th century. was made by the capital's architects Pyotr Fedorovich Krotov and Dmitry Dmitrievich Zverev. The paintings on the walls and vaults are dedicated to gospel scenes and were made by unknown masters.

The Church of Unexpected Joy in Maryina Roshcha was founded in 1901. Already in 1904 it was completed. On June 4, 1904, a petition was sent to Metropolitan Vladimir (Vladimir Epiphany) to grant the new stone church the status of an independent parish.

For the school, the parishioners pledged to rent a nearby two-story house at their own expense (note: in 1907, construction began on a new school building, which was built, but the interior work was never completed). The request was granted, and on June 20, Metropolitan Vladimir consecrated the temple.

Reference. Vladimir Bogoyavlensky was killed by the Bolsheviks in 1918 in Kyiv. In 1992, at the bishops' council, he was canonized.

The layout of the building, originally designed for student classrooms and other school premises, could accommodate up to 2 thousand parishioners. Orthodox newspapers of the time, reporting on the consecration of the new church, noted its rare beauty.

From the Lazarevsky Church she was donated a lot of silver utensils, church vestments, ancient icons in silver, large icons of Seraphim of Sarov and the martyr Tryphon.

In January 1909, the residents of Maryina Roshcha submitted another petition to add two altars with side chapels to the main volume of the temple, one of which to be consecrated in honor of St. Nicholas, as the patron saint of Emperor Nicholas II.

The extension project was entrusted to the architect Ippolit Mikhailovich Tsvilinev. The laying of the side altars took place on May 18, 1909. In December of the following year they were consecrated, and the church from a single-altar church now became a 3-altar church.

In 1911, at the Samgin bell factory, in honor of the 50th anniversary of the abolition of serfdom, parishioners decided to purchase a large bell. He weighed 310 pounds. Before this, 6 bells were installed on the belfry, the total weight of which was 145 pounds. To accommodate the new one, the bell tower had to be rebuilt.

The completion project, completed in November 1912, was carried out by Julius Fedorovich Diederichs, a famous metropolitan architect and author of the Rizhsky railway station. The large bell was raised and installed on the new belfry on December 2, 1912.

At the beginning of the 20th century. Maryina Roshcha was still considered the outskirts of Moscow, but after the revolution it became part of the city. At that time, the area was inhabited mainly by workers, who managed to save the temple from Bolshevik repressions, and church services here never stopped.

However, in 1922, some of the church valuables were nevertheless confiscated in favor of the starving people of the Volga region: silver frames were removed from books and icons, liturgical vessels made of silver were taken away.

Construction of the church

According to different versions, the name “Maryina Roshcha” comes from

  • on behalf of the wife of a local boyar who lived here around the 17th century;
  • goes back to another, less pleasant story of the 18th century: robbers led by Atamansha Marya hid here.

And even in the 19th century, from the end of which the area finally became part of Moscow, this area was a refuge for various kinds of thieves, there was even a saying: “In Maryina Roshcha, people are simpler.” Is this why the local residents, when deciding on the creation of a temple, decided to dedicate it to the revered icon of “Unexpected Joy”. Indeed, according to the history of the image, its name comes from the story of God's pardoning of a robber or thief who prayed before him.

Count Sheremetyev allocated land for the construction of the church

Funds for the temple were collected by residents of the area, but the land was 400 square meters. fathoms - donated by Count Sheremetev, deliberately allocating a dry area on a hill for the temple. This benefactor is a descendant of Count Nikolai Sheremetev (the builder of the Ostankino estate) and the former serf actress Praskovya Zhemchugova. The traditions of charity of the Church were passed on by this family from generation to generation.

This is interesting: The meaning of the icon of the Virgin Mary “Unexpected Joy”

20

June

1904

The new church was consecrated by Moscow Metropolitan Vladimir (Epiphany), later a holy martyr.

Eight years later (1912), parishioners raised money for the bell tower. It was designed by Yu.F. Diederichs, a famous Moscow architect. But the calm life of the newly formed parish did not last long: revolutionary events broke out.

Soviet years

Now parishioners proudly say that the “Unexpected Joy” church was one of the few that was not closed by the authorities. The Bolsheviks only removed the largest of the bells from the belfry, but the rest remained, but it was forbidden to ring them.

Interesting fact

Cleric of the temple, Rev. Rostislav Yarema believes that the workers who lived nearby did not allow the church to close. Nowadays there are many icons brought by believers from the destroyed churches of the capital: several images of the Mother of God of Kazan, icons of St. Nicholas.

But the fact that the temple remained operational did not save its clergy and parishioners from repression. Now the church has its own saints from among them - these are:

  • Deacon Feodor Smirnov, who served here from 1932 to 1937, when he was arrested; the holy martyr was shot in the camp on July 5, 1938;
  • novice Ekaterina Konstantinova, who became a parishioner of the church after the closure of the Sorrow Convent in Moscow; she was arrested in 1938 and executed on March 20.

Now in the church you can pray before the image of these martyrs, glorified as saints since the 2000s.

Interior decoration

The Church of Unexpected Joy in Maryina Roshcha was active during Soviet times, therefore, when many churches were closed or destroyed, believers brought icons here to protect them.

Stored here:

  • 3 icons of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker;
  • icon “Quick to Hear”;
  • the icon of St. Seraphim of Sarov, with which several miracles are associated.

The church also contains two icons of the Kazan Mother of God , one of which came here during the Soviet period. It is equipped with massive handles on the sides, probably intended for comfortable carrying during religious processions.

In 2009, His Holiness Patriarch Kirill, who led the solemn service in the church on December 22, presented the parishioners with a second icon of the Kazan Mother of God.

The iconostasis has been preserved since 1904. It is made of noble woods - cypress and cedar. The old wood has darkened but still looks beautiful.

Icon of the Mother of God “Unexpected Joy”

Our sins and iniquities grew... The holy wonder-working icons of the Queen of Heaven were hidden, and until there is a sign from the holy wonder-working icon of the Mother of God, I will not believe that we are forgiven. But I believe that there will be such a time and we will live to see it. Hieromartyr Metropolitan Seraphim (Chichagov)

There are not many churches in Moscow whose fate one can only envy. They were spared fires, they were not captured by renovationists, they were not closed, they were not rebuilt beyond recognition and they were not demolished. Like lonely candles, they stood in the midst of rampant atheism, gathering wonderful priests and wonderful laity within their walls, helping them survive and maintain their faith...

One of these temples is the church in the name of the prophet Elijah Obydensky in a quiet Moscow lane, Vtoroy Obydensky, not far from the revived Cathedral of Christ the Savior. All around are the lovely noble mansions of old Moscow, which have absorbed the comfort of the former patriarchal life of the city, when all the parishioners knew each other, visited each other, and socialized at a hospitable table. But the center of spiritual life was the temple.

Church of the Prophet Elijah. Obydensky Lane Moscow

The exact date of completion of the current stone temple is known - June 14, 1702. Previously, in its place stood a wooden one, erected in one day. Hence the name "Ordinary". Such temples were erected in Rus', either asking the Lord for something very important, or as a vow, in gratitude. The location was well chosen. The Kremlin is nearby, and the timber needed for construction was brought along the river. Neither the date nor the circumstances of this are known; but by 1589 the wooden Elias Church already existed. Even then, she was loved by both tsars and patriarchs, and ordinary Muscovites: “On the 11th day of June, the sovereign [Alexey Mikhailovich] went behind the crosses [in the procession] to the prophet Ilya to the Ordinary, which is behind the Chertolsky Gate, and in 7191 [1683] May on the 14th day...” Processions of the cross to Ilya the Obydenny were held not only on holidays, they often prayed for rain or a bucket.

In 1612, the zemstvo militia of Prince Pozharsky stood near this temple. And by the very beginning of the 18th century, the current stone building appeared. On the northern outer wall there is an inscription: “In the summer of the incarnation of God the Word of 1702, indictment 1, June 14 in memory of St. Prophet Elisha, this temple of the holy and glorious prophet Elijah the Ordinary was created under the power of ... Tsar Peter Alekseevich with the blessing of the Holy Governing Synod, member of the Most Reverend Stephen, Metropolitan of Ryazan and Murom, Duma clerk Gabriel Fedorovich, his brother commissar Vasily Fedorovich Derevnin"; Inside, on the wall of the refectory there are two tombstones with the names of the brothers.

The old Moscow intelligentsia, the descendants of ancient noble families, those who survived and survived without betraying either their faith or their Fatherland, have been flocking here to “Ilya the Ordinary” for decades.

And the most remarkable thing is that “Ilya the Ordinary” became a refuge for many icons from closed and destroyed Moscow churches.

This is how the miraculous “Unexpected Joy” came here. Its origin is not known for certain. Most likely, this particular icon was in the Church of Constantine and Helena in the Taininsky Garden of the Kremlin, destroyed in 1928. From there, along with many other shrines of the Mother See, in a roundabout way it came to the Church of the Resurrection in Sokolniki, then one of the centers of the Renovationist heresy. When the godless government stopped supporting the renovationists, their movement disintegrated and the icons from Sokolniki began to return to the surviving Orthodox churches in Moscow.

The then rector of “Ilya the Ordinary,” Father Alexander Tolgsky, asked Patriarch Sergius for a blessing, and in 1944 the icon was solemnly moved to its current location. This happened on Friday, and since then the solemn cathedral akathist “Unexpected Joy” has been served here on Fridays.

Hundreds of people prayed to this miraculous image, turning to the Most Pure One with faith and in the hope of receiving the unexpected joy of forgiveness and gracious consolation, help in their affairs and especially praying for their children.

The first known mentions of the icon itself date back to the 1830s, but the event that gave rise to its writing occurred at least a century earlier and is described in the book “The Irrigated Fleece,” compiled by St. Demetrius of Rostov. A certain dashing man led a sinful life, but was nevertheless reverently attached to the Most Pure One, daily praying unforgivingly to Her icon. One day, getting ready to “go out for a sinful deed,” he prayed and suddenly saw how the Baby’s ulcers on his arms, legs and sides began to bleed, and the voice of the Most Pure One said: “You and other sinners are again crucifying My Son with your sins, like the Jews. You call Me Merciful, but why do you insult Me with your lawless deeds?” The shocked sinner begged the Most Pure One for intercession, kissed the Savior’s sores as a sign of forgiveness, and from that time returned to an honest and pious life.

According to this legend, on the icon “Unexpected Joy” it is written “a certain lawless man”, praying on his knees before the image of “Hodegetria”, under which the first words of the story itself or a special prayer are usually inscribed.

On the miraculous robe from the church in the name of Elijah the Obydennoy there is an inscription: “With the blessing of His Holiness Patriarch Alexy of Moscow and All Rus', the robe was restored on the icon of the Mother of God “Unexpected Joy” in the summer of 1959 under the rector of the Church of the Holy Prophet of God Elijah the Ordinary, Archpriest A.V. Tolgsky.”

The late Patriarch Pimen especially loved this icon and therefore considered himself a parishioner of the Church of Elijah the Ordinary, often coming here for the evening service. They say that one day he saw this image in a subtle dream, and when he found himself for the first time in the temple of Elijah the Prophet, he immediately recognized exactly this list of “Unexpected Joy.”

Let's talk here about other shrines of this temple. A beautiful image of the Kazan Mother of God written by Simon Ushakov. The icon of the Assumption, which came here from the closed Church of the Assumption on Mogiltsy. When the nearby Conception Convent was closed in 1924, its last abbess brought here the icons of the “Three-Handed Lady” and the Mother of God “Merciful” (exactly seventy years later this monastery was restored, and its icons were returned to their original place, in the monastery). Icon of the Sovereign Mother of God, painted by the artist Nikolai Chernyshev, who was arrested and died for his faith in December 1924.

His Holiness Patriarch Kirill at the icon of the Mother of God “Unexpected Joy” in the Church of Elijah the Ordinary

Hieromartyr Metropolitan Seraphim (Chichagov), one of the first hagiographers of St. Seraphim of Sarov, at one time painted images of the Savior and the venerable one, and the icon of the Savior was confiscated during the arrest of the bishop in 1937 and, unknown how, ended up in the temple after the execution of St. Seraphim.

The temple gathered amazing people within its walls. Father Alexander Egorov recently ended his earthly journey: how many people did this truly Russian shepherd care for, how much wise advice did he give, how much love and consolation did his parishioners see from him... Peace be upon his ashes...

Another locally revered image, “Unexpected Joy,” has long been in the Moscow church in the name of the Icon of the Mother of God “Unexpected Joy” in Maryina Roshcha.

There were also revered lists in the demolished churches of the Burning Bush near Smolensky Boulevard, the Annunciation at the Zhitny Dvor in the Kremlin, as well as in the church in the name of Fyodor Stratelates at the Myasnitsky Gate that has survived to this day; outside the capital - also in the village of Selgi, Simbirsk province.

Let us trust in the mercy of the Mother of God, give thanks for those unexpected joys that She sends us and believe that She will not leave us on the difficult and thorny path, whose name is life.

Troparion, tone 4

Today, faithful people, we spiritually triumph, glorifying the zealous Intercessor of the Christian race and flowing to Her most pure image, we cry out: O Most Merciful Lady Theotokos, grant us unexpected joy, burdened with many sins and sorrows, and deliver us from all evil, praying to Thy Son, Christ our God, save our souls.

Prayer

O Most Holy Virgin, the All-Blessed Son of the All-Blessed Mother, the Patron of this city and holy temple, faithful to the Representative and Intercessor of all who are in sins, sorrows, troubles and illnesses! Accept this prayer song from us, unworthy Thy servants, offered to You, and like the sinner of old, who prayed many times before Thy honorable icon, You did not despise Him, but You gave him the unexpected joy of repentance and You bowed Your Son to His many and zealous ones. intercession for the forgiveness of this sinner and erring one, so even now do not despise the prayers of us, Thy unworthy servants, and beg Thy Son and our God, and grant to all of us, who with faith and tenderness bow before Thy celibate image, unexpected joy for each need: a sinner mired in the depths of evil and passions - all-effective admonition, repentance and salvation; for those who are in sorrow and sorrow - consolation; to those who find themselves in troubles and embitterment - a complete abundance of these; for the faint-hearted and unreliable - hope and patience; for those who live in joy and abundance - unceasing thanksgiving to God the Benefactor; to those in need - mercy; those who are in illness and long illness and abandoned by doctors - unexpected healing and strengthening; for those who were waiting for the mind from illness - return and renewal of the mind; those departing into eternal and endless life - memory of death, tenderness and contrition for sins, a cheerful spirit and firm hope in the mercy of the Judge. O Most Holy Lady! Have mercy on all who honor Thy all-honorable name and show to all Thy all-powerful protection and intercession: in piety, purity and honest living, observe them in goodness until the end; create evil good things; guide the erring one on the right path; Make progress in every good work that is pleasing to Your Son; Destroy every evil and ungodly deed; in bewilderment and difficult and dangerous circumstances, for those who find invisible help and admonition sent down from heaven, save and save from temptations, seductions and destruction, from all evil people and from enemies visible and invisible; float for those who swim, travel for those who travel; Be the Nourisher for those in need and hunger; for those who do not have shelter and shelter, provide cover and refuge; Give clothing to the naked, intercession to the offended and unjustly persecuted; invisibly justify the slander, slander and blasphemy of those who suffer; expose slanderers and slanderers before everyone; To those who are bitterly at war, grant unforeseen reconciliation, and to all of us - love, peace, piety, and health with long life for each other. Preserve marriages in love and like-mindedness; spouses who exist in enmity and division, die, unite me to each other and establish an indestructible union of love for them; Give quick permission to mothers giving birth, raise babies, teach chastity to young ones, open their minds to the perception of every useful teaching, instruct the fear of God, abstinence and hard work; Protect your blood brothers from domestic strife and enmity with peace and love; Be the Mother of motherless orphans, turn away from all vice and defilement and teach everything that is good and pleasing to God, and bring those seduced into sin and uncleanness, having revealed the defilement of sin, from the abyss of destruction; Be the Comforter and Helper of widows, be the rod of old age; Deliver us all from sudden death without repentance and grant us all a Christian death in our lives, painless, shameless, peaceful and a good answer at the Last Judgment of Christ; having ceased in faith and repentance from this life, create with the Angels and all the saints life; to those who died a sudden death, beseech the mercy of Thy Son, and for all those who have died who have no relatives, begging for the repose of Thy Son, Thou thyself be a ceaseless and warm Prayer Book and Intercessor; Yes, everyone in heaven and on earth leads You as a firm and unashamed Representative of the Christian race, and, leading, glorify You and Your Son, with His Beginningless Father and His Consubstantial Spirit, now and ever and forever and ever. Amen.

Shrines and relics of the temple

There are 3 main shrines preserved in the temple.

The Mother of God Icon “Unexpected Joy”

The “Unexpected Joy” icon is the main shrine of the temple. It is to her that most believers go with their prayers. The subject composition of the icon goes back to an ancient story, which can be found among the works of D. Rostovsky, united by the general title “Irrigated Fleece.”

The story goes that one sinner prayed daily before the Mother of God icon, after which he went to do his lawless deeds. On one of these days, during prayer, the image on the icon came to life. The sinner saw that wounds had opened on the baby’s body, from which blood was oozing.

The man was amazed at the terrible sight, and the Mother of God told him that people like him crucify her son every time they commit their criminal acts. The vision shocked the lawless man so much that he began to ask the Mother of God to pray for him. The Mother of God three times asked the Savior to forgive the sinner, after which Christ granted him forgiveness.

The repentant criminal kissed the wounds of the Infant God, and the vision disappeared. From the writings of D. Rostovsky, where this story was set out, it is known that the forgiveness the thief received from Christ became an “unexpected joy.” This is where the name of the image itself comes from.

The icon differs from similar ones belonging to the iconographic type of Hodegetria. What is important here is not so much the image of the Mother of God, slightly shifted to the background, but the situation itself, conveying the moment of repentance of a sinner asking for the remission of his sins.

The copy of the “Unexpected Joy” icon, located in the temple, is miraculous. There are many stories of healing from illnesses associated with him. Prayer for loved ones in front of the icon of the Mother of God can give instant joy from getting rid of the troubles and sorrows that haunt them in life.

The church does not keep a special record of miracles performed in a holy way. However, they are evidenced by the weight gain placed on the icon. These are rings, crosses, chains, earrings, which are brought by people who have received help as a sign of gratitude.

Icon of the martyr Tryphon

The Temple of Unexpected Joy in Maryina Roshcha houses another, but less well-known shrine, especially revered by Muscovites. This is an icon in honor of the martyr Tryphon with pieces of the saint’s relics. She is most often approached by those who have already despaired of finding a decent, interesting job.

Reliquaries with holy relics

There are 3 more arks installed in front of the royal doors in the center of the temple. Each of them contains 18 particles of holy saints.

The most revered shrines

Venerated icon of the Mother of God “Unexpected Joy”

The most revered shrine is the icon, which gave its name to the church itself. The image of “Unexpected Joy” is one of the revered Moscow lists of shrines, known since the 19th century. He is considered miraculous. Every Sunday an Akathist is performed before him.

Other venerated relics include:

  • icon-reliquary martyr. Tryphon, especially revered by many Muscovites;
  • three arks with parts of the honest remains of more than 50 saints of God.

Social service

Reception of parishioners on social issues takes place in the church premises on Saturdays. Reception time: 15.00–16.30. Visitors who have difficulty moving can contact the temple attendant for assistance.

In the church there is a “Social Assistance Notebook”, in which parishioners write down what kind of help they need: medicine, clothing, for example, large families often need it, food.

Case management service

The workers of this service try to help those who have suffered a misfortune: illness, fire, death of a loved one, and the like.

Together with the social service center, they provide care for families living in the Maryina Roshcha area who are in difficult life situations.

Working with pensioners

The parish does a lot of work with pensioners. Free classes are organized for them.

"Health of soul and body"

This program is aimed at maintaining health. It consists of theoretical and practical classes that introduce the basic principles of a healthy lifestyle, elements of breathing exercises, and preventive exercises.

Classes take place in the parish house from 13:00 to 15:00.

"Art therapy"

Creative classes, held on Thursdays from 12 to 1 pm, help restore harmony of body and soul with the help of drawings.

Choral singing

From 1 to 2 p.m., the parish house hosts choral singing classes that develop musical abilities.

Youth Association "Lestvitsa"

Club meetings take place after the all-night vigil on Saturdays. Young parishioners communicate, participate in various intellectual events and creative projects. In addition, they go on pilgrimage trips together, take an active part in missionary activities and social services of the parish (they contribute to the organization of parish holidays and other events).

They participate in sports competitions, for example, they hold martial arts tournaments among young parishioners of the temple. The club has a football team called “Lestvitsa”, which is quite famous in the capital among Orthodox youth.

Parishioners and clergy of the temple also cooperate with the Phoenix youth club, whose members are young people with disabilities.

Missionary service

The church operates a Parish Counseling Service. Victims of cult activities and their relatives can turn here for help. In addition, on Sundays, service workers organize free tours of the temple for everyone.

On holidays, Sundays, and also the night before, parishioners can receive a “Gospel leaflet” with printouts of current liturgical passages from the Gospel. The text on them is printed in Russian and Church Slavonic.

Since 2015, a street library began operating in the church , intended for the open exchange of Orthodox literature.

The library consists of 2 bookcases. One of them is installed outdoors. It contains books during the warm season and on weekends. In case of bad weather or during winter, another bookcase is installed in the temple premises. Books can be borrowed permanently or temporarily, and also, if desired, you can add your own Orthodox literature to the street church library.

Sunday School

There is a Sunday school at the church on Saturdays, Sundays and Thursdays (optional). In addition to preschool, there are also middle and senior groups. Education in them is conducted according to the programs established for Sunday schools.

Children here study the Law of God, Church Slavonic, and temple studies. They sing in a choir, engage in various creative activities, participate in theatrical productions, and go on excursions.

Church choir

The church has a church choir, famous far beyond the parish. In his performance you can hear works by various composers: Degtyarev, Turchaninov, Chesnokov. There are also works by contemporary composers.

On weekdays, 3–4 singers sing in the choir; on holidays, their number increases to 12 people. A soloist is assigned for each church composition. The composition of the choir is constant, but there are exceptions. If a person has a musical education and a desire to sing in a choir, then he is not denied.

The artist also made another departure from the traditional image of Hodegetria. In the icon, the Mother of God does not bend over the baby. Her gaze and the gaze of the Divine Infant are turned to the one praying, which reflects the essence of the miracle.
