Recently, new Orthodox churches have increasingly begun to appear in small towns in Russia. The Moscow region town of Odintsovo is no exception. Here, in the early 2000s, a beautiful cathedral was built in honor of the Holy Great Martyr George the Victorious.
Church of St. George the Victorious in Odintsovo
Description
The cathedral is a two-story brick building with a basement. The building is designed in Russian style. A 72-meter bell tower rises next to the temple. The total weight of the bells on it is 18.5 tons.
Baptismal Church of St. George's Cathedral
The baptismal church is located on the ground floor. The interior is made in Byzantine style and decorated with white stone. The last floor is dominated by Baroque and Empire style. The iconostasis on the middle floor is made in the style of Dionysius. The stained glass windows on the third floor, made using restoration technology, also attract attention. All the drawings are alloy, not painted paintings.
Interesting! Indian stone was used in finishing the floor; the work was also carried out by Indian craftsmen.
The icons located in the halls are copies of images from the monasteries of Athos. Athonite monks were engaged in painting icons.
Cathedral of St. George the Victorious (Odintsovo)
In 2002, on the day of the 45th anniversary of the city of Odintsovo, Metropolitan Yuvenaly of Krutitsky and Kolomna addressed those present at the Ice Palace, recalling that there was no Cathedral in the city and invited the head of the Odintsovo district, Alexander Georgievich Gladyshev, to organize its construction. The people present in the hall unanimously supported this proposal. The project of the new temple was developed by the chief architect of the Odintsovo district, Gankin Valentin Grigorievich. Construction work was entrusted to Sotspromstroy CJSC under the leadership of General Director Mikhail Mikhailovich Panov. On August 7, 2004, Odintsovo hosted distinguished guests who arrived at the groundbreaking ceremony for a new church in the name of the Great Martyr George, among whom were the Governor of the Moscow Region B.V. Gromov and the Presidential Plenipotentiary Representative in the Central Federal District G.S. Poltavchenko. The ceremony was led by Metropolitan Yuvenaly.
It was assumed that the new cathedral church would become one of the most spacious, beautiful and grandiose churches not only in the Odintsovo district, but throughout the Moscow region. Many residents of the area took part in its construction. On September 9, 2007, on the day of the 50th anniversary of the city of Odintsovo, the temple opened its doors to everyone who wanted to attend the consecration of the cathedral and the first liturgy, led by His Holiness Patriarch Alexy II. The three floors of St. George's Cathedral could not accommodate everyone who came to the service that day; many had to be accommodated in the square in front of the temple. At the end of the service, Alexy II announced that this temple was given a special, high status as a Cathedral, that is, one of the central churches of the Moscow region.
The solemn beauty of the Cathedral of St. George the Victorious amazes with its external and internal decoration. On the lower floor there is a baptismal temple, built according to the design of the architect A. A. Anisimov. The icons of the lower aisle were also painted in Anisimov's workshop. The entire lower floor is designed in Byzantine style using natural white stone. The original structure of the baptism for adults and the Sunday school (in the form of a semicircle) was designed by Valentin Gankin. The iconostasis on the middle floor of the cathedral is made in the style of Dionysius. The architecture of the upper floor is in the Empire and Baroque styles. The floors were created by craftsmen from India from stone, also brought from India. The iconostasis on the top floor was designed and created by craftsmen in Palekh. The stained glass windows on the windows of the third floor are the author's work, made using a unique restoration technique.
Over the short years of its existence, the Cathedral of St. George the Victorious has been replenished with many shrines. These are pieces of the relics of the Great Martyr George, St. Alexander of Svir, Martyr Tatiana, Great Martyr Panteleimon, St. Anthony of Optina, Eldress Matrona of Moscow. Most of the icons located in the seven limits of the St. George Church were painted in Greece on Mount Athos. The only icon of the new martyrs of Odintsovo in the Odintsovo region, painted specially for this cathedral, is also kept here.
Parish life is developing at the church: there is a Sunday school, open not only for children, and various clubs (embroidery, drawing, singing, beadwork). On major holidays, Sunday school students and their parents stage plays and skits. The Cathedral of the Great Martyr George the Victorious has become one of the real spiritual centers of the city of Odintsovo.

Cathedral of the Great Martyr George the Victorious
- a two-story brick church, the largest in the Odintsovo region: a five-domed, six-pillar building in the Russian style with a bell tower.
It was built in the city center on the initiative of the head of the district A.G.
Gladyshev for the 50th anniversary of Odintsovo.
The temple project was developed by the chief architect of the Odintsovo district, V.G. Gankin. The construction was carried out by M.M. Panov. On August 7, 2004, the Odintsovites received distinguished guests: the Governor of the Moscow Region, Boris Vsevolodovich Gromov, and the Presidential Plenipotentiary Representative in the Central Federal District, Georgy Sergeevich Poltavchenko, who came to lay the foundation stone of a new church in honor of the Great Martyr George, which was headed by Metropolitan Yuvenaly.
Many residents of the Odintsovo district took part in its construction. On September 9, 2007, the great consecration and the first liturgy were held, led by Patriarch Alexy II. At the end of the service, Patriarch Alexy II announced that he was giving this temple a special, high status of the Cathedral, that is, one of the central churches of the Moscow region.
During this time, the cathedral became one of the most beloved and significant churches in the area. The lower floor, where the baptismal church is located, was designed and built by the architect Anisimov. Icons
the lower aisle were also written in Anisimov's workshop. On this floor everything is done in Byzantine style from natural white stone. The original structure of the Sunday school (in a semicircle) and baptism for adults was designed by Valentin Grigorievich Gankin.
Iconostasis
The middle floor of the cathedral is designed in the style of Dionysius.
The upper floor is designed in Baroque and Empire styles. The floors were made by craftsmen from India (the stone was also brought from India). The iconostasis on the top floor of the Cathedral was designed and created by craftsmen in Palekh. The stained glass windows
on the third floor windows are the author's work. They are made using a unique restoration method - this is a real alloy, and not painted pictures, as it might seem at first glance.
At the Cathedral there is an Orthodox Sunday school for children and adults, creative clubs are open (choir, folk art group, wool felting group, flute playing group, sewing group), a library, and a video library.
