Temple of Matrona of Moscow on the street. Sofia Kovalevskaya: opening hours, schedule of services, address and photo

Matrona of Moscow is a blessed old woman, revered not only by residents of the capital, but also by many Orthodox Christians who ask her for help in healing illnesses, saving families, and solving life’s difficulties. Even during her lifetime, Mother Matrona was very kind, sympathetic, and tried to support and heal as many people as possible; After her death, the old woman continues to help believers. It is not surprising that, as part of the Moscow program for the construction of churches, they decided to dedicate one of them specifically to Matrona.

History of the church

  1. The community in Dmitrovskoye, where the church stands, arose in 2007 , the decision to build a temple was made in 2012, and a temporary church was built a few months later.
  2. Work on the construction of the main temple began at the end of November 2014 , and three months later the lower church in the name of John of Kronstadt was completed. By April, the interior decoration of the lower church was completed, as well as external work in the upper church, belfry and parish house.
  3. At the moment, the church is operational , but decoration and communications are still ongoing.

Northern lights. The largest temple in honor of Matrona of Moscow was built in the north of the capital

As part of his tours of the sites of churches under construction, Russian State Duma deputy and adviser to the Patriarch on construction issues Vladimir Resin visited the Northern District of the capital last Saturday. The first object of the Saturday route was the temple in honor of the Holy Blessed Matrona of Moscow on Sofia Kovalevskaya Street.

Work on the construction of the shrine began in November 2013. To date, the temple has been built. The five-domed building, more than 40 meters high, already today attracts the attention of residents of the Northern Administrative District, shining with golden domes and crosses. This is perhaps the largest temple in the area.

True, there are no domes yet on the free-standing belfry. However, the belfry itself and the clergy house were also built, the outside was plastered and painted. The territory is surrounded by a metal fence, the paths are lined with colored tiles, lawns and flower beds are laid out, and a fountain is installed.

Today, all work is concentrated inside the temple and the clergy house. According to the rector of the parish, Archpriest Dmitry Sinitsyn, before the Great Consecration, a large amount of work remains to be done on the interior decoration and beautification of the temple. A preliminary design of the interior decoration of the upper – main – church, drawings of wall frescoes and columns were obtained. The appearance of the iconostasis has been approved. Work to bring the ideas to life will begin this fall. It was decided to attract the best graduates of the Trinity-Sergius Lavra school of icon painting to them.

The lower church is operational. Since the temple is baptismal, the floor in it is made warm, the font, made in the shape of a cross, is lined with natural stone. A wooden carved iconostasis has been installed, for which icons are painted. Large chandeliers are suspended from the ceiling, and stone floors are laid.

In the clergy house, engineering work, installation of ventilation and fire systems are being completed, finishing of the second floor has begun, where a Sunday school will begin work in a month. Then the workers will move to the first floor. The refectory and auxiliary premises will be located here.

Vladimir Resin noted that the work is being carried out according to schedule. He recalled that “the great consecration of the temple is just around the corner and is scheduled for May 2 next year - the day of remembrance of the Blessed Matrona of Moscow. “By this date, all finishing work on the clergy house and decoration of the temple must be completed.”

A church in honor of St. Spyridon, Bishop of Trimifuntsky, is being built not far from Koptevsky Boulevard. According to the rector of the church, Father Sergius (Wild), the shrine will accommodate a thousand people. Made in the so-called mixed style, based on Greek and Russian temple architecture, it will not be similar to any Moscow temple.

The church does not have major patrons of the arts; construction is carried out by the parish, including thanks to the “Name Brick” campaign. The vaults of the altar part of the temple have been completed, and wooden structures are being made for the brickwork of the figured vaults of the dome. Preparations are underway for installation of the floor slab. The attic part of the refectory adjacent to the temple and the second tier of the bell tower are being built. By the end of the year, the builders promised to close the thermal circuit of the entire building.

Outside sections of the temple are already beginning to be finished with light-colored facing bricks. A large bell has been cast. It will be installed on the belfry as soon as the third tier of the bell tower is installed.

“The pace of work is good, its quality is not bad, but there is still a lot to be done. By Easter it is necessary to raise the cross on the main dome - Vladimir Resin set the task for the builders. “I think that next year the main civil works will be completed, and around May 2019 we can plan to put the temple into operation.”

Metropolitan Mark of Ryazan and Mikhailovsky recalled that “at the very beginning, the program to build Orthodox churches in the capital had many opponents. But now there are fewer and fewer such voices, since Muscovites are convinced that churches bring an educational, spiritual principle both to the personal lives of parishioners and to the public life of the city.”

On October 22, the Great Consecration of the Church of St. Sergius of Radonezh, built on Khodynka, will take place. The start of construction was not easy - it took a long time to agree on the land issue, and there was continued red tape with the planning project.

The temple combines the traditions of ancient Russian and Italian architecture and at the same time corresponds to the modern style of the surrounding buildings. “The architects were given the task: there will be no separate clergy house on the site, which should become part of the temple,” says the rector of the shrine, Priest Vasily Biksey.

“The prototype of the temple was St. Mark’s Cathedral in Venice, built during the period when Christianity was not yet divided into Orthodox and Catholic. Therefore, one of the features of the building is that its domes are located not diagonally, as in Russian churches, but along the sides. Five hollow drums

are a continuation of the internal volumes of the temple, due to which the temple has excellent acoustics.

To date, construction and finishing work has been completed. A mosaic was made on the entrance groups of the temple, and most of the icons for the iconostasis were painted. A throne and an altar have been installed in the temple, and general decoration of the premises is underway. Landscaping has been carried out.

“The Temple of St. Sergius of Radonezh is the most important element in the chain of those numerous transformations that are being carried out on Khodynka today,” says Vitaly Nikitin, deputy prefect of the Northern Administrative District. “There is a lot of housing construction going on next to the temple; in a matter of years, iconic sports facilities have been erected here. Now, as soon as we launch the CSKA metro station, we will create a beautiful park in the center of Khodynka, where there is already a memorial obelisk in honor of the aviator heroes.”

Life of Saint Matrona

Many pilgrims from all over the world came to Matrona during her lifetime. From birth she had the gift of working miracles and gained fame as a prayer worker and ascetic for the glory of God . Her life is an example of great spiritual self-denial, compassion, patience and love. A huge number of people came to her for help, asking to cure illnesses, relieve anxiety and fears, and help in grief. And she helped these people - healed and instructed.

From people, in turn, she did not demand much; they just had to believe in God. She taught everyone not to despair, to try to correct their lives from sinfulness and vices, while turning to the help of God.

The holy relics of Matronushka are now in the Pokrovsky Stavropegic Women's Monastery. A large number of pilgrims gather there, wanting to venerate them. People come there with flowers - usually white roses or chrysanthemums - she loved them most.
