History of the temple

It was built at the beginning of the 20th century. Originally it was the cathedral of the Tver Nativity Monastery. This construction was dedicated to the 300th anniversary of the Romanov dynasty. It was erected with funds from the Nativity of Christ Monastery and money from the royal family. The engineer of this structure was N.P. Omelustog. It was consecrated in April 1916. Princess Elizabeth Feodorovna herself was present at this ceremony.

Then he was haunted by certain historical processes:

  • in 1936 they decided to close the temple. Such a fate then befell a large number of Orthodox churches;
  • in 1988 - returned to the diocese;
  • in 1992, the minor consecration of the temple was carried out again;
  • in the early 1990s it became the cathedral of the Tver diocese;
  • in December 2000, the relics of St. Sergius of Srebryansky were transferred there;

History of the cathedral

The Tver diocese is considered the oldest in Rus'. Its first bishop, named Simeon, initially served in a wooden chapel located on the territory of the city Kremlin. Under this saint (13th century), Prince Michael founded the Church of the Transfiguration of the Savior, the first stone religious building after the invasion of the Mongol tribes.

In 1914, in memory of the 300th anniversary of the reign of the Romanov dynasty, the Resurrection Church was erected on the territory of the Nativity of Christ monastery. Nicholas II donated most of the money for construction. The consecration ritual was performed by the Monk Seraphim, who was later glorified by the Russian Orthodox Church as a hieromartyr. Princess Elizabeth also took part in the ritual, and soon suffered death for the sake of Christ.

Cathedral architecture

This temple is made in pseudo-Russian style. It was built of brick and then plastered. In shape it resembles a cube and the adjacent buildings have apses and a large drum with a helmet-shaped head. On the west side there is an annex for the choir. There is a porch underneath it. On the southern and northern sides there are small vestibules, which are sandwiched by powerful buttresses.

Based on all its characteristics, this building can easily be considered one of the best monuments of this kind. Its spacious interior is not painted. The decor in the decoration bears certain forms from Pskov and Novgorod architecture.

In 2006, a small Church of the Royal Passion-Bearers was built next to the temple, which is designed in the same style as the cathedral. It was built in 2000, after the royal family was glorified among the ranks of martyrs. The money was allocated from donations from parishioners of the cathedral.

The style of the cathedral can be attributed to neoclassicism. The square building is somewhat massive. There is a central drum under the semicircular dome. There is also a three-tier bell tower of a similar square shape.

The columns, cornices, plinth, steps and bell towers are made of white stone. The cathedral itself is painted ocher with white decorative details. Inside the cathedral there is a beautiful painting, the dome is decorated with an image of the sky.

The beauty of the interior is best seen from above, going up the stairs to the second floor, where the bookstore and church shop are located.

Arseny Tverskoy

The Nativity of Christ Monastery in Tver has been known since the end of the 14th century. It was founded by Arseny Tverskoy. He took monastic vows in Kyiv, and in 1390 he ended up in Tver in the retinue of Metropolitan Cyprian. The Bishop arrived in the city for an ecumenical council in order to reconcile Prince Mikhail Alexandrovich and Bishop Euthymius. Reconciliation failed, the Tver bishop was sent to Moscow, and the prince unexpectedly called an unknown archdeacon to be the Tver shepherd. Arseny was against it: he saw enmity and turmoil in Tver and understood that the prince wanted to carry out not only state, but also church affairs. However, Arseny's wisdom and kindness led to his universal veneration.

The bishop himself was burdened by worldly affairs - by nature he was a hermit. In 1394, Arseny retired to the Zheltikov forest, where he founded a hermitage. 15 years later, Arseny reposed, and at the end of the 15th century his relics were found. The Zheltikov Monastery was destroyed during the last war, the relics were lost, but Arseny is still revered as the patron saint of Tver.

Nativity of Christ Monastery in Tver. History of the monastery

The convent on the banks of the Tmaka River was originally entirely wooden. Little is known about the first centuries of its history. Nevertheless, the Moscow sovereigns knew about the monastery. This is evidenced by letters of grant from Vasily III and his son Tsar Ivan the Terrible. During the Time of Troubles, Poles, Cossacks and Russian "thieves' men" plundered the monastery. The temple and cells were burned, and the nuns were dispersed or killed. However, at the end of the Time of Troubles in 1613, the surviving abbess Apollinaria and five sisters returned to the ashes and resumed the monastery.

In 1694, the maiden Evdokia Rostopchina took monastic vows at the monastery under the name of Elena. Elena's (Evdokia) parents gave her the image of the Tikhvin Icon of the Mother of God as their and their grandfather's blessing. My grandfather served in the Ambassadorial Prikaz and once brought an icon from abroad, but did not say where it was from. A pilgrimage to the icon began at the Nativity of Christ Monastery. Devoutly believing pilgrims even saw a beautiful maiden in formal clothes walking next to them. In 1739, the Tikhvin Icon was moved to the Transfiguration Cathedral.

In the Great Fire of 1763, the icon miraculously survived, but it was inappropriate to leave it in the burned-out cathedral. Then the Tikhvin Icon was returned to the Nativity of Christ Monastery.

Architectural ensemble of the Nativity of Christ Monastery

The first stone church in the monastery was erected shortly after the fire in 1765.

At the turn of the 18th-19th centuries, a stone fence was built around the monastery.

Countess Anna Ivanovna Chernysheva and Agathoklea Alexandrovna Poltoratskaya donated funds for a new stone cathedral. Construction of the new building began in 1810, but three years later the unfinished temple unexpectedly collapsed. It was rebuilt by Karl Ivanovich Rossi in 1820. The cathedral, square in plan, is crowned with five domes on light drums. On three sides the temple is decorated with four-column porticoes of the Doric order.

A modest pilaster portico marks the altar of the cathedral.

To the west of the cathedral is the gate church of the Savior Not Made by Hands. Adjacent to it are the abbot's chambers and the refectory. They were built in 1801-1805, probably according to the design of Nikolai Alexandrovich Lvov.

In the arch of the gate there is the grave of Abbess Appolinaria. I would like to say that this is the abbess of the 17th century who restored the monastery, but this is not true. There were at least two abbess with this name. The abbess of the turn of the 18th-19th centuries rests in the gate.

Resurrection Cathedral

The classic ensemble of the monastery was built by the wonderful architects N.A. Lvov and K.I. Rossi. However, the most expressive temple in the ensemble appeared at the beginning of the twentieth century. This is a wonderful example of church modernism. It was built by engineer Nikolai Petrovich Omelyusty. He also built the Old Believer Intercession Cathedral in Borovsk and the Church of the Intercession in Zamoskvorechye. The Resurrection Cathedral was built for the 300th anniversary of the House of Romanov in 1913. Not only the archbishop, but also Grand Duchess Elizaveta Feodorovna was present at the consecration. The cathedral looks massive and reliable. This is achieved by tilting the walls inward. The impression is enhanced by the buttresses and the cone-shaped drum of the central dome.

The detail of the arched belts and imitation of the curb on the cornices create an amazing image of ancient and at the same time eternally young Russia.

If the cathedral is squat externally, then inside it is unexpectedly light and airy. The reinforced concrete dome and wide windows create the effect of a floating white hemisphere.

They didn’t have time to paint the temple, although frescoes in the spirit of Vasnetsov or Nesterov would be very appropriate here.

The three-tier iconostasis is modern. It was restored after 1999.

The Resurrection Cathedral is considered the cathedral of the Tver diocese. It contains a shrine containing the relics of Saint Prince Mikhail Alexandrovich Tverskoy. It turns out that during the explosion of the Tver Transfiguration Cathedral in 1935, a particle of the relics still survived.

Nativity of Christ Monastery in Tver. Details

A chapel was built next to the Resurrection Cathedral in 1913. In 2006, a small Church of the Royal Passion-Bearers, stylized in the spirit of the Resurrection Cathedral, was erected in its place. The authors of the church are modern architects Zhogolev and Kurochkin.

In January 2022, near the wall of the cathedral we saw an interesting snow panel “Baptism”. Unfortunately, it melted due to the thaw. However, the plot remained quite recognizable. This was the first time we saw such a snow sculpture.

Impressions from the Nativity of Christ Monastery turned out to be more than positive. Photography is allowed in the Resurrection Cathedral. Most likely, you can film in the Nativity Cathedral, but its interiors turned out to be not very interesting. In Soviet times there was a gym there, the paintings were covered over, the iconostasis was broken. Now they have begun to be restored, but they are still far from their original appearance.
