My acquaintance with this icon began... by watching a news program. In the running line they wrote about the procession with the icon of the Mother of God, and I caught myself thinking that I had never even heard its name. I wrote it down on a piece of paper so as not to forget, and on Sunday I stayed after the service to ask the priest.
And I learned amazing things! It turns out that the “biography” of this image is suitable for making a film, but not a documentary, but at least an adventure. But its ending will be sad. Although…
History of the Tabynskaya Mother of God
The image is miraculous and first appeared to the monk Ambrose, who was passing by two springs near the village of Tabyn. A miraculous voice appeared to Hierodak, but at first he mistook it for temptation. Then the voice was repeated, and Ambrose went to look and saw the Tabyn icon on a rock between a source of fresh and salt water.
The monk brought the newly found icon to the monastery, where it was joyfully placed in the Orthodox church where services were held. In the morning, the image landed on the monastery gate, the monks took it back, but the situation repeated itself the next day. As a result, a chapel had to be built there to pray to Tabyn, which both the tsar and representatives of the Orthodox Church later learned about.
Then the icon was transported to Kazan and Ufa, where it was revered in every possible way, but in the end the church in Kazan burned down, and the icon returned to Tabyn, where it miraculously reappeared at the beginning of the 16th century. Then there was the Bashkir uprising in 1660, when the image disappeared again, and about thirty years later the icon reappeared.
These repeated appearances and disappearances were associated with a stay in the village of Solovarnoye, which was located not far from the source where the icon was first found. The village was subsequently destroyed, the icon disappeared in 1708, and reappeared in 1740. This is worth noting because the story is associated with miracles.
At this time, three Bashkir shepherds who belonged to a different religion found the icon; they broke it and immediately became blind. The shepherds began to pray to the icon for healing, and the youngest of them cried out with special faith, as a result of which he received healing and began to wash the eyes of his companions with water from a salty spring. Over time, they also gained sight, and the source became sacred.
This young Bashkir shepherd found faith through the icon and became an Orthodox ascetic. He lived to be 130 years old and died while walking with a religious procession through the city of Chelyabinsk.
With this discovery, the tradition of a religious procession with the icon began. Photographs and written evidence of this have survived to this day. Icon Day is celebrated on the ninth Friday after Easter and is often associated with various miracles bestowed by Mary.
At the moment it is believed that the icon is lost.
During Soviet times, Ataman Dutov transported the icon to China; after the 1950s, traces of it completely disappeared, and now one can only guess about the whereabouts of the Ural relic. There is evidence that the shrine was moved to Australia and San Francisco.

Service of the Mother of God.
Processions with an icon
Recently, the tradition of religious processions with an icon was revived in the Orenburg diocese. In addition, there is currently a continuous religious procession that travels with representatives of the Cossack army to different countries and regions. As part of this project, in 2013 the icon was transported to the holy Mount Athos.
The meaning of this image is more than significant for all of Orthodoxy. There are not many shrines in which various miracles have been manifested so many times.
The above are only the main milestones and a superficial description of the history of the icon, which in reality is much more intricate and fascinating.
To be imbued with faith and experience a miracle, it is enough to attend a service at which the akathist to the Tabyn Icon of the Mother of God is read, or simply read the prayers to it yourself.
What do they ask the Tabynskaya Mother of God?
- First of all, about health. After all, it is known that the original icon was miraculous. During the raging plague, she healed entire villages and cities (Orenburg, Sterlitamak, Tabynsk). She also drove away cholera and other dangerous diseases. In addition, the Mother of God is asked to be delivered from mental torment.
- About protection from troubles, diseases, misfortunes.
- About peace both in your family, and in the country, and throughout the world.
- Often near the icon they repent of their sins, asking for help to “quit” - both with a sinful life in general, and with a certain bad habit.
- Finally, many come asking for help to get through a difficult period of life.
They pray to the icon like this:
By the way, these words can be read not only in front of the Tabynskaya icon, but also in front of any other consecrated image of the Mother of God.
Where is the original icon located?
It would be logical to assume that everything is there, in the Tabynsky Monastery... But no!
During the Civil War, the white Cossacks, retreating, took this icon with them, fearing that the advancing Reds, known for their anti-God sentiments, would simply destroy it.
Together with the leader of these Cossacks, Ataman Dutov, she ended up in China (they say that the Chinese, even non-Christians, came to worship her because they noticed that she brings good luck).
There, a 25-kilogram icon (and as soon as the exhausted soldiers brought it?) was placed in the Russian Orthodox Church in the city of Ghulja (Xinjiang province). But when the cultural revolution broke out in the country and they began to forget about churches (at best), it was lost...
Where is she now? There are many assumptions on this matter, one more surprising than the other:
- in Australia;
- in the USA, in a private collection;
- still there, in China;
- in Paris…
Perhaps her third appearance is coming, and again on the second week after Pentecost?
Prayer to the Most Holy Theotokos in front of Her icon, called Tabynskaya
Most Holy Theotokos, Mother of our Lord Jesus Christ, constantly pray and intercede for us before God. O our Most Holy Mother, who accepted us all under the cross of Your Son! We thank you who have asked for countless blessings for us in your prayers. I thank You, who have given our country so many of Your wonderful icons. We thank You, Who in the hour of sorrow sent the miraculous Tabyn icon to the Ural land and showed us Your icon on the great rock. We pray to You, soften our hardened hearts with the dew of your prayers. At the source of water, where our bodily illnesses are healed, give us streams of sorrowful tears and cleanse with them the dirt of our sins. Through Your holy icon at the source of water, which showed us the blessing of this place, help us to fulfill the word of the Lord, Your Son, and to be the salt of the earth. Show us, sinners darkened by sin, Your dark face, enlighten the darkness of our sins and lead us to a peaceful refuge in the places of eternal rest that the Lord has prepared for those who love Him. Amen.
Orthodox calendar of icons of the Mother of God for 2022. Days of remembrance of icons
A lot of icons were created by human hands as a sign of worship, love and faith. Icons were created based on verses from the Bible, but there are icons that were marked in history by the sign of the Lord in certain events. Most often, people kneel in prayer in front of the icons of Jesus Christ, his mother the Virgin Mary, Nicholas the Wonderworker, the Martyr Saint Matrona and many others. But there are also special, miraculous icons with the faces of these saints, such as “Icon of Assuaging Sorrows”, “Sovereign Icon”, “Picturesque Source”, “Softening Evil Hearts” and dozens of other equally revered and reverent icons. Many such creations are given a separate Orthodox church holiday. All such holidays are collected in one detailed calendar to avoid missing an important day.
