On February 7, Orthodox believers celebrate the Day of the Icon of the Mother of God “Quench my sorrows.” The icon “Quench My Sorrows” is widely known in the Orthodox world. According to legend, the image has been considered miraculous since a seriously ill woman was brought to it. Seeing the icon, the sick woman was able to cross herself, and then was completely healed, although before that she could barely move her hand. And it was not by chance that she went to the temple: the Mother of God herself appeared to her in a dream and pointed her on the right path.
The story of the discovery of the icon “Quiet My Sorrows”
The first icon “Quench My Sorrows” appeared in the city of Shklov. Then the image was brought to Moscow by the Cossacks back in 1640, but the Zamoskvoretsky copy of this icon received special glorification. Speaking about this image, many immediately recall the plague of the late 18th century and the great healings of the icon.
There is a well-known story about a woman who suffered from a serious illness for a long time. She couldn't get out of bed. The doctors could not do anything about her illness, so the woman simply humbly awaited death. One day she saw the Virgin Mary in a dream, who told her to go to Moscow, to the Church of St. Nicholas, where there is an image with the inscription “Quench my sorrows.” The woman asked her relatives to take her there. The icon ended up in the bell tower, and not in the temple, which came as a surprise to the priests.
The woman kissed the icon, after which she gained strength. This happened on January 25, 1760. Since then, it was established on this day to celebrate a festival in honor of the icon, which was called “Quench My Sorrows.” After the transition to the new calendar, the date of celebration shifted to February 7.

Grand Duke Vasily I Dimitrievich, the eldest son of Dmitry Donskoy, went with an army to Kolomna and stopped on the banks of the Oka. The number of Tamerlane's troops was many times greater than the Russian squads, their strength and experience were incomparable. The only hope remained in chance and God's help.
The clergy were sent to Vladimir. After the liturgy and prayer service on the feast of the Dormition of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the clergy accepted the icon and carried it to Moscow with a procession of the cross. The journey with the Vladimir Icon from Vladimir to Moscow continued for ten days. Countless people on both sides of the road, on their knees, prayed: “Mother of God, save the Russian land!”
