Who is Saint John Chrysostom

The birthplace of John Chrysostom was Antioch. Date of birth: approximately 347. The family of the future saint was noble and quite wealthy; his father held a high position in the Byzantine army. John's mother was widowed early, but never remarried, devoting herself to raising John and his sister. But the girl soon died, and the mother gave all her attention to her son.

The woman tried to give her son the best education. This allowed him to engage in legal practice after graduation. The young man’s soul yearned for the Lord; he dreamed of entering a monastery. But the mother opposed her son’s wishes. John resigned himself to his mother’s will, but continued to study the Holy Scriptures and theological books.

In 367, John's mentor, the Antiochian Bishop Meletius, baptized the young man. He then received the title of reader. Soon after, John's mother died. There was nothing stopping him from withdrawing from the world. Having distributed his property, the saint went to the monastery, taking monastic vows.

But monastic life with long, strict fasts led to the monk developing a serious gastric disease. He was forced to leave the monastery, returning to his homeland.

The saint’s further ecclesiastical career developed as follows:

  • 381 – ordination to the deaconate;
  • 386 – appointment as a priest;
  • 397 - headed the Patriarchate of Constantinople, becoming an archbishop.

Having taken a high church position, John began to fight the injustice and inequality that reigned in society. The archbishop tried to help poor people as much as possible by doing charity work. John denounced clergy who shirk their Christian duty, expelling them from their posts.

All this caused discontent among the authorities and the higher clergy. Intrigues were waged against the archbishop with the aim of defrocking and expulsion. But this did not stop the saint. The archbishop's sermons attracted more and more people.

And for the eloquence and grace emanating from his words, people called John Chrysostom.

John was expelled from the city. The earthquake that broke out after the saint's expulsion frightened the authorities. John was allowed to return, but not for long. After a while, the saint was again sent into exile. But on the way the saint fell ill and died on September 14, 407.

VI. From rites and prayers for different occasions

1.

Eternal God, who delivered the human race from the captivity of the devil, free Your servant
(name)
from every action of unclean spirits, commanded evil and unclean spirits to retreat from the soul and body of Your servant
(name)
, not to be present and not to hide in them. In Thy holy name, and of Thy Only Begotten Son, and of Thy Life-giving Spirit, may they depart from the creation of Thy hands. Yes, having been cleansed from all demonic actions, he will live purely, righteously and piously, worthy of the Most Pure Mysteries of Your Only Begotten Son and our God, with whom He is blessed and glorified along with Your Most Holy, Good, and Life-giving Spirit, now and always and unto the ages of ages. Amen.

2.

You who judge all unclean spirits and who by the power of the word drove out the legion, appear now through Your only begotten Son over the creation that You made in Your image, and deliver it from the possession of the enemy, so that, pardoned and purified, it may enter Your holy flock and the animate temple of the Holy One may be preserved. Spirit and Divine Most Pure Mysteries, by the grace, mercy and love for mankind of Your Only Begotten Son, with Whom you are blessed together with Your Most Holy, Good, and Life-Giving Spirit, now and always and unto the ages of ages. 3.

We call on You, Lord God Almighty, the highest, unsearchable, peaceful King; We call upon You, Who created heaven and earth. From You came the first and the last, the beginning and the end; You gave people power over four-legged and dumb animals, for You, Lord, commanded it. Stretch out Thy strong hand and Thy high and holy arm, and, looking, look upon this Thy creation; send him a peaceful Angel, a strong Angel, guardian of soul and body, who will forbid and drive away every evil and unclean spirit, since You alone are the Most High Lord, the Almighty, Blessed forever and ever. Amen.

4.

We call on the divine, holy, great, terrible and all-effective name to expel you, apostate, and prohibit you, devil, from harming you.
Holy God, beginningless, terrible, invisible in essence, incomparable in power, incomprehensible in Divinity, King of glory and Lord Almighty, who successfully called everything to life from nothingness with a word, walking on the wings of the winds, may the devil rebuke you. The devil forbids you, calling on the water of the sea and pouring it out on the face of the whole earth; The Lord of hosts is His name. Forbids you, devil, the Lord, Whom the countless heavenly fiery ranks serve and glorify with fear, Whom the multitude of angelic and archangelic hosts worship and glorify with trepidation. Forbids you, devil, the Lord, revered by the forces around you and the terrible, six-winged, many-eyed Cherubim and Seraphim, who cover their faces with two wings because of the invisible and unsearchable Deity, and who cover their legs with two wings, so as not to be caught from the unspeakable glory and incomprehensible greatness Him, and with two wings flying and filling the sky with their proclamation: “Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of hosts, heaven and earth are full of His glory.” The Lord forbids you, devil, from the bosom of the Father, God the Word descended to earth and through the venerable, inexplicable and pure incarnation of the Holy Virgin inexplicably appeared in the world in order to save it, and casting you down from heaven with His own power, to show you before all the lost . The Lord forbids you, devil, who said to the sea: “Be silent, stop” (Mark 4:39) and, according to this command, it immediately calmed down. The Lord, who made clay from pure spit for a man blind from birth, formed the missing member and gave light, forbids you, devil. The Lord, who revived the daughter of the ruler of the synagogue and the son of the widow with a word, forbids you, devil, the Lord, who stole him from the mouth of death and gave him to his mother safe and sound. The Lord, who raised the four-day-old Lazarus whole, as if he had not died, and unharmed, forbids you, devil, to the horror of many. The Lord, who through strangulation abolished the curse and through piercing His most pure rib, destroyed the flaming sword that guarded paradise, forbids you, devil. The Lord forbids you, devil, by spitting on His dear face, having wiped away tears from every face. The Lord, who erected the Cross for the sole establishment and salvation of the world and for the fall of you and all the angels submissive to you, forbids you, devil. The Lord, who uttered a voice on His cross, forbids you, devil, and the veil of the temple was torn, and the stones fell apart, and the tombs were opened, and those who had been dead for centuries were resurrected. The Lord, who put death to death by death and by His resurrection gave life to people, forbids you, devil. May the Lord forbid you, devil, who descended into hell, destroyed its monuments, freed all the prisoners held in it and called to Himself; Seeing Him, the guards at the gates of hell were horrified and, hiding at the bottom of hell, left their place. May the Lord, the risen from the dead, Christ our God, who has given His resurrection to all, forbid you, devil. May the Lord, who ascended in glory to heaven to His Father and sits on the right side of the Majesty on the throne of glory, rebuke you, devil. May the Lord, who comes in glory on the clouds of heaven together with His holy Angels, forbid you, devil, to judge the living and the dead. May the Lord, who has prepared for you an unquenchable fire, an everlasting worm, and total darkness for eternal punishment, rebuke you, devil. May the Lord, the devil, rebuke you, from whose power everything fears and trembles, because His wrath is great, threatening you. The Lord Himself forbids you, devil, in His terrible name: tremble, tremble, be afraid, go away, perish, disappear, fallen from heaven and with you all evil spirits, every evil spirit, the spirit of debauchery, the spirit of malice, the spirit of the night, the spirit of the day, the spirit midday spirit, evening spirit, midnight spirit, oncoming spirit, either earthly or watery, or in groves, or in reeds, or in valleys, in passages and crossroads, in lakes, in rivers, in houses and baths, located, harming and bringing people down crazy; retreat from the creation of the Creator, Christ our God, remove yourself from the servant of God (name)
, from his mind, from the soul, from the heart, from the kidneys, from the feelings, from all members, so that he may be healthy, unharmed, free, knowing his own Master and The Creator of all God, who gathers the lost and gives the seal of salvation through birth and re-creation in Divine baptism, so that he will be worthy of His most pure, most heavenly and terrible Mysteries and join His true flock, staying in a cool place, being raised on the water of rest and, following the example of the shepherds , faithfully guided by the rod of the Cross, for the remission of sins and eternal life. To Him belongs all the glory, honor, worship and greatness, together with His Beginningless Father, with His Most Holy, Good and Life-Giving Spirit, now and always and unto the ages of ages. Amen.

The prayer for help and understanding sounds like this:

“O great saint John Chrysostom! You received many and varied gifts from the Lord and, like a good and faithful servant, you multiplied all the talents given to you for good: for this reason, you were truly a universal teacher, as every age and every rank learns from you. You are the image of obedience to the youth, the luminary of chastity to the young, the mentor of hard work to the husband, the teacher of kindness to the old, the rule of abstinence to the monk, the inspired leader of God to those who pray, the enlightener of the mind to those seeking wisdom, the inexhaustible source of living words to those who are kind, the inexhaustible source of living words to those who do good. a star of mercy, a wise image for rulers, an inspirer of zeal for truth, an inspirer of daring, a mentor of righteousness for the persecuted, patience: you were everything to everyone, and you saved everyone. Over all of these you have acquired love, which is the bond of perfection, and with that, as if by the power of the Divine, you have united all the gifts in your one person, and here you have shared the reconciling love, in the interpretation of the words of the apostles, you preached to all the faithful. We are sinners, we each have our own talent, we are not imams of unity of spirit in the union of peace, we are vain, annoying each other, envious of each other; For the sake of this gift, we are divided not into peace and salvation, but into enmity and condemnation. Moreover, we fall to you, the saint of God, overwhelmed by discord, and in contrition of heart we ask: with your prayers drive away from our hearts all pride and envy that divides us, so that in many places we will be one church body, so that, according to your prayerful words, we will love each other and with one mind we confess the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, the Trinity, Consubstantial and Indivisible, now and ever and unto ages of ages. Amen".
