Nicholas II, emperor, passion-bearer
The Orthodox Church calls all martyrs who suffered in the name of Christ passion-bearers. It is also permissible to call those who suffered martyrdom from the invaders and went to another world with the name of the Lord on their lips.
The emperor was executed by the Bolsheviks after he signed the abdication of power. Members of his family and several people from his retinue were executed along with him. This event became one of the most tragic and terrible in the history of the country during the period of 1918.

Life story
After the death of Alexander III, Nicholas accepted the throne and began to fulfill his duties. From early childhood he was brought up with respect for religion and the traditions of the church. It is believed that the emperor was always tactful and kind-hearted by nature. At the very beginning of his reign, the Tsar married Alexandra Feodorovna, Princess of Hesse. A year after the official wedding, Princess Olga was born, then 3 more daughters were born: Tatiana, Maria, Anastasia. Only in 1904, Tsarevich Alexei was born into the family. The boy suffered from hemophilia from birth.
During the reign of Nicholas there were many trials. The First World War was perceived extremely negatively by the people. In addition, its results did not satisfy anyone. Several revolutions followed, which did not add to the king's popularity. Nicholas’s tragedy forever became “Bloody Sunday,” when hundreds of peaceful workers were injured during the execution.
In 1917, a coup d'etat led to the fact that Nicholas II was forced to abdicate the throne. After this, the Bolsheviks placed the royal family into custody. The last place of exile was Ipatiev’s estate near Yekaterinburg. Thus ended the earthly life of the former king.
Icons
Icons are dedicated to Nicholas. On them the king is traditionally depicted with the face of a saint. He holds a cross with one hand and raises the other for blessing. Due to the fact that photographic images of the king have reached his contemporaries, he is traditionally depicted on icons as resembling real photographs.
Day of Remembrance
The memorial day chosen for veneration is July 17th. After the first commemoration, which took place on July 17, 1989, the construction of churches in the name of the passion-bearers began everywhere.
Iconography
On the icons the royal martyrs are depicted without a doctor or servants. The Tsar, Empress and their five children are dressed in ceremonial clothes, with saints' halos on their heads. Each of the saints holds in his hand a cross, which is the original symbol of martyrdom, because it was on the cross that Christ and his first believers were crucified. At the top of the royal icon there are images of two angels carrying the image of the Mother of God.
In addition, there are modern icons in which Nicholas 2 and Alexandra are depicted separately. These are classic half-length images of saints.

The Romanov martyrs are remembered with obligatory liturgical glorification. Believers especially remember the king’s children, who were killed undeservedly. At the same time, Orthodox Christians are saddened by the fact that many of the children did not die immediately, but were finished off with bayonets.

Imperial family
