Help of the Nine Martyrs of Kizichesk during epidemics and other stories

Finding a job is one of the most pressing issues in every person’s life. And this is not surprising, because a modern person simply cannot live without work. In order to get a job, people study for a long time and hone their skills, but sometimes even this is not enough. We all strive to receive high wages and comfortable working conditions, although it is very difficult to find such a workplace. In this case, in order to facilitate the search for work, Orthodox Christians can safely turn to the Almighty for help and read the prayer to the 9 Martyrs of Kiz for work. Such prayer can not only speed up the search for a job, but also guide a Christian to the most suitable job for him. The prayer to the “Nine Martyrs of Cyzicus” about work helps all troubled people find their path in life.

Origin of the Nine Kizich Martyrs

The Nine Martyrs of Cyzicus was the name given to a group of Christians who, at the beginning of the third century, came to preach in the pagan city of Cyzicus. The group consisted of men whose names were: Artem, Theodotus, Rufus, Philemon, Theognis, Antipar, Magnus, Famsviy, Theostichus. Arriving in the city, they began to preach so successfully that they quickly attracted new followers. This did not go unnoticed by the local authorities, who professed paganism. For their preaching, nine martyrs were arrested and thrown into prison. In prison, they were subjected to a lot of torture, because they were forced to renounce Christ and make sacrifices to the pagan gods. But the will of the martyrs was unshakable, and seeing their stubbornness, the executioners beheaded each one. The remains of the martyrs were bought by followers and buried outside the city walls.

With the arrival of Emperor Constantine the Great, by his order, a temple was built, into which the bodies of the nine holy martyrs were transferred. Christian historical records claim that the graves of martyrs became miraculous and helped heal sick people who visited them. Also, the burials of saints helped troubled people find a future path in life, giving them strength and perseverance in achieving their chosen goals. Since then, there has been a belief that the prayer to the “Nine Kizian Martyrs” brings help in work if a person sincerely believes and persists in his search.

What did they pray to the Saints of Cyzicus for?

The prayer to the nine martyrs of Cyzicus sounded from the lips of those who came for various everyday reasons: the persecution of the Church of Christ was over and it was possible to turn to worldly problems . Deadly epidemics have now become the most terrible trials. For a long time, the saints of Cyzicus provided help in the fight against disease, which gave them the reputation of being protectors against pestilence.

Who else do they pray to for illnesses:

  • Panteliymon the Healer
  • Saint Luke of Crimea
  • The Mother of God in front of the image of “The All-Tsarina”

The veneration of martyrs in Russia began with an epidemic of shaking disease (fever) that struck Kazan in 1653. The prayer to the nine martyrs of Kizi, pronounced by the people at the call of Metropolitan Adrian of Kazan, created a miracle: the epidemic suddenly stopped.

Text of prayer to the 9 martyrs of Kizi to find a job

About the all-praise of the holy martyr, the noble servants of Christ Theognis, Rufus, Antipater, Theostishus, Artem, Magna, Theodotus, Faumasius and Philemon! For Christ's sake from various countries gathered together, and that perfect God and Man boldly preached in Kizitsa, and was forced to devour an idol, idols were in vain and the prince was put to shame; you shed your blood like water for Christ, and with that you adorn the Church of Christ like a bride with purple; in the same way, now, crowned with an unfading crown of immortal glory, you are ever in unspeakable joy from the faces of angels in the Heavenly villages, bathed in Divine light and enjoying the sight of His ineffable kindness.

For this reason, we, in humility, come to you and look tenderly at your holy image, we pray: pray for us to Christ God, as we have boldness towards Him, that through your holy prayers we will get rid of every ailment and harm, mental and physical, for you God has given the gift of medicine from all sorrows to heal those who fall upon you with faith, just as he healed this glorious man from the shaking illness; and we, too, who are faithful, having received the same, honor you, holy martyrs, who have so much of the gift of Christ God, to whom be glory, together with the Father and the Holy Spirit, always, now and ever, and unto the ages of ages. Amen.

Help of the Nine Martyrs of Kizichesk during epidemics and other stories

On May 12, hundreds of people come with flowers to the Moscow Church of the Holy Nine Martyrs of Cysis, on the day of its patronal feast, to thank the saints for their intercession before the Lord in search of work. People who have not yet received help, but have heard about it, also come here. In 2013, before I first came to the miraculous icon with particles of the relics of the holy martyrs, I first read about their miraculous help and was impressed. The many gifts on the icon testify to her. But not everyone knows that for more than one century Christians have been turning to the intercession of the Nine Martyrs before God in case of any destructive epidemic. Church parishioner Valentina Frolova talks about the holy martyrs, her beloved parish and miracles in her life. Here she and her children were baptized, here she put in a lot of work, here she and her husband were married, and on Easter 2022 the funeral service for her beloved Sergei was held.

Nine Martyrs of Kizi - Valentina, miracles happen in the life of every believer. If possible, share cases of God’s miraculous help to your family.

– There have been many miracles in my life. The Lord saved me twice. I grew up without parents. My godmother took me under her wing and brought me to this temple in 1999. But I was baptized only at 26 years old. I've been preparing for this for a long time. I was very seriously ill and sought help from above. The nine Kizi martyrs made me understand that I allowed myself a lot of unnecessary things in my life when I was far from God. Each of us has our own miracles. Through them, the Lord helps us to follow the right path. And the Lord gives me admonition so that I can walk my difficult path.

Isn’t it a miracle that a year ago God gave me the strength to survive the death of my beloved husband, which coincided with the Holy Resurrection of Christ? Those days were difficult for everyone, because... many lost their relatives. My soul wept, but I did not cry. I grieved for my husband and other wonderful people. We all in the parish prayed for their recovery, trusting in the will of God. My husband spent 10 days in the hospital under a ventilator with damaged lungs, leg pain and other ailments. Sergei's heart could not stand it. He was gone. The loss shocked me so much that I had to call an Orthodox psychologist. I didn’t believe the doctors’ words that my husband was gone. Both the parish and the rector of the church, Archpriest Anthony Serov, grandson of the artist Valentin Serov, helped our family. Father Anthony became rector in November 1997. He graduated from the Theater School. M.S. Shchepkin, VGIK and Moscow Theological Seminary. When I came to the dilapidated church, there was a Sunday school here, but it was not as beautiful as it is now. After many years of atheistic desolation and destruction, our beloved priest began to revive our temple in 1994. It includes all the activities of the parish, and the spiritual nourishment of the Devyatinsky youth club. All of our priests are good. And Archpriest Igor Konkov, my spiritual father, who graduated from Moscow Higher Technical School. Bauman and the Moscow Theological Seminary, and other priests. Everyone supported me in my grief. With the blessing of Father Anthony, the entire parish collected the amount needed for the funeral; the priest gave me the phone number of an experienced funeral agent.

Valentina Frolova But still, on the day of the funeral, I didn’t understand how I could stand it. Fear, anxiety, confusion and excitement overwhelmed me so much that my heart began to beat faster and faster. Fear was overcome by the fact that all these funeral troubles coincided with the joy of Holy Easter that reigned in our souls. In honor of Easter, I ordered a red coffin for Serezhenka. I bought him a new suit because... They weren’t allowed to wear the one he wore when he married me. It was also a miracle that they were allowed to open the coffin, although many were not allowed to say goodbye to the dead due to the epidemic. And I looked at Serezhenka and couldn’t believe my eyes - he lay as if alive, just as he had during his life. When we drove from the morgue to the cemetery, it was so easy for me to pray, so joyful! He is next to me, and I don’t have a single tear! After all, it’s a real miracle that Seryozha died on Easter! Here it is, Red Easter, here it is, the joy of Christ's Holy Easter! Christ is Risen! And we will be resurrected, our souls will be resurrected, as the Lord promises us! There is no death! Serezha's soul is alive. I'm feeling it. What a miracle I experienced while burying the father of my children!

There is no death! Serezha's soul is alive. I'm feeling it

The next miracle is that it was on the 40th day after Sergei’s death that all cemeteries in Moscow were opened after the general quarantine. For me, this is not a coincidence, but God’s Providence. Together with Father Alexander Petrakov, we went to the cemetery on that day, and on Seryozha’s birthday, and on his name day, and on the day of our Wedding. I am so grateful to God that memorial services were served on all these days and there were fresh flowers on the grave! I am also grateful to my former temple employee Olga, who helped with the money for the fence around the grave. Thank God for everything!

And how many miracles happened during the life of my Sergei! There are several patronal feasts in our church. In addition to the day of remembrance of the Nine Martyrs of Kizichi, we also celebrate the days of memory of the Archangel Michael (November 21) and the Holy Martyr Barbara (December 17). A month before the holiday, I was in the hospital with a heart condition, and suddenly at the all-night vigil on the feast of Archangel Michael with All the Ethereal Powers, I became very ill. My husband and son were not around that day. But in the temple everyone began to help me. And, of course, our good experienced doctor helped, helping everyone secretly. My dear doctor helps me to this day, and the Lord will definitely reward him clearly for his secret blessings.

Cookies in the form of crosses Another miracle happened during Lent, April 4, 2022, on Sunday, on the Feast of the Annunciation. My son Vasya and I came to our church to pray, receive communion and help with cleaning. In honor of the Week of the Worship of the Cross, fresh cookies in the shape of crosses were distributed to everyone after the service. We were given three crosses, but there were no prosphora left. But after cleaning the temple, the altar boy brought us the only remaining prosphora, for which we thanked the Lord. At home, we put all this in a holy corner and began to read prayers of thanks. Feeling a strong fragrance, we thought that the neighbors were baking something tasty, but the smell came from our holy corner! And our whole life is woven from such small miracles! You can't tell everything.

– People probably tell you about the miracles that happened to them after praying at the icon of the Nine Martyrs of Kizi? Did they bring gifts with you?

- They brought it both in front of me and not in front of me. In gratitude to the holy martyrs, people bring flowers, rings, crosses, and chains. The unemployed most often order prayer services from the icon, read akathists to the saints - and find a long-awaited job. We came to the temple, prayed from the bottom of our hearts, and felt that God was helping. Through these miracles people came to God. And the miracle is not only in finding a job. The main miracle is that they changed their lives: they were “parishioners” and became parishioners. Now they constantly receive communion in church. The parishioners change before our eyes.

The miracle is not only in finding a job. The main miracle is that they changed their lives

– Its history is written on the website of your temple . And now, in a pandemic situation, I would like to remind people that, according to popular belief, the Kizi martyrs miraculously help during epidemics. Through their prayers, God heals them from any physical and mental illness, and not only helps them find work.

– The vow to build a temple in Moscow in honor of the Kizich martyrs was given, while dying, by the Patriarch of Moscow and All Rus' Adrian, who before that was the archimandrite of the Chudov Monastery in the Kremlin, and then became the Metropolitan of Kazan and Sviyazhsk. When he was struck by paralysis, through the prayers of the holy martyrs he was healed and lived for several more years. He fulfilled his vow and founded our Devyatinskaya Church in Moscow on Presnya. Griboedov, Alyabyev, Leo Tolstoy and other famous people prayed in our church.

But even before this, the future Patriarch promised God to found a monastery in Kazan in honor of the Nine Martyrs of Kizi, about whom St. Demetrius of Rostov, the author of the service to the martyrs, wrote that these saints were given abundant grace “to drive away shaking diseases.” That's what they called the plague at that time. Once again it broke out in the Kazan region in the middle of the 17th century. Then more than 40 thousand people died in Kazan. In 1654, the city was saved by the bringing of the Smolensk-Sedmiezernaya Icon of the Mother of God from the Sedmiezernaya Hermitage. A chapel was built, and the future holy monastery in memory of the Nine Kizich Martyrs began to be built. And in 1686, in Kazan, thousands of people again began to die from a terrible epidemic of “fever”. Metropolitan Adrian of Kazan and Sviyazhsk promised that if the Lord saves the city from the pestilence, he will build the Kizichesky monastery near Kazan. The next morning the epidemic suddenly stopped. The wooden church was built by the summer of 1688, and in 1691, Patriarch Adrian blessed the founding of the Holy Vvedensky Kizichesky Monastery. He loved this monastery and sent there the icon of the Nine Martyrs of Kizi with particles of their holy relics and two icons of the Mother of God - Kizi and Vilna. Every year the icon of the Kizich martyrs was brought to Kazan along with the miraculous Smolensk icon of the Mother of God. Prayer services were served not only in churches, but also in the courtyards and houses of townspeople, the path to which was covered with grass.

Church of the Holy Nine Martyrs of Cyzicus - It is a pity that now, with the rampant new “malicious epidemic”, religious processions with such shrines as the miraculous icon of the martyrs from Cyzicus are not held everywhere. It turns out that in Moscow, in the Orlovs’ estate on Bolshaya Nikitskaya, there was a house church in the name of the Nine Martyrs of Kizicheskaya. It was consecrated in connection with the plague epidemic of 1771. The elder brother of Count Vladimir Orlov, Grigory Orlov, participated in organizing the fight against the epidemic. It would be worth making a film about the help of holy martyrs during epidemics and showing it on central television! It is a pity that we forget such bright and instructive pages of history.

“I think it would be interesting to film the stories of our contemporaries who begged for a good job at the main shrine of the temple. It depicts nine residents of the city of Cyzicus. This is a city in Asia Minor on the shores of the Mediterranean (Marmara) Sea. In Cyzicus, Christianity began to spread during the preaching of the holy apostles Andrew the First-Called and Paul.

Among the martyrs there are warriors, villagers, townspeople, and clerics. If you often read the akathist, you can remember their unusual names - Theognis, Theostichus, Artema, Magnus, Theodotus, Faumasius, Philemon, young Antipater and elderly Rufus. They fearlessly and openly confessed Christ, without fear they denounced paganism that defends its idols. They were tortured, tempted by glory, but they did not renounce Christ and were beheaded by the sword. Their incorrupt bodies were placed in a temple built in their honor under St. Constantine the Great. Under him, the persecution of Christians stopped. Soon miracles began to happen from the holy relics: the paralytic and those sick with fever were healed, the insane came to their senses, the pagans began to accept Christianity. After the death of Julian the Apostate, the light of the Christian faith shone in Cyzicus under the auspices of the holy martyrs.

– Valentina, do you go through life’s trials without complaining?

“There was also some grumbling, but, thank God, I humbled myself and realized that I had to live for someone. And when I met my soulmate, a family was created. This is where we got married. And the children went. I worked here intermittently. I went on maternity leave twice. Thank God I didn’t have an abortion, although the doctors offered to have an abortion and said that I might have a miscarriage. I flatly refused. I read the akathist to the Fedorov Icon of the Mother of God, and the Mother of God helped me: miraculously I gave birth myself. I immediately went to Father Igor, my spiritual father, and he prayed for me, and everyone prayed - the whole church, everyone saw me off on maternity leave. On March 18, Nastya was born, and two years later, on February 8, son Vasya. I pray for them at the “Education” icon of the Mother of God. I want them not to repeat my mistakes. I didn’t send my son to kindergarten. We studied with him at home. She took him to drama school, Sunday school, and ballroom dancing. But the most important thing is not to forget the temple. I try to give communion to my children more often. Vasya loves to listen to the ringing of bells and ring the bells. I hope that his heavenly patron St. Basil the Great will always help his son. Now difficulties no longer frighten me. Although after the death of a husband there is fear when you need to take responsibility. I am very grateful to our kind parishioners and priests for their heartfelt prayers and spiritual instructions. Our parish has a social service that helps large families and those in need.

Our life depends only on God

Now we are all worried about our family and friends. Today we need to intensely pray to the Kizi martyrs, so that they ask God to deliver us from the viral infection, protect everyone from this scourge and heal those who are sick. To ask that all people learn to repent, that they take vows to reform and correct themselves. But even Orthodox Muscovites not everyone knows that in our church every day after the liturgy, and on Sunday at 15.00, a prayer service is held for the Nine Martyrs of Kizi with special petitions for deliverance from the destructive plague. Our life depends only on God. Only He knows when and what will happen to us. Come to our temple. We are happy to see everyone. Thank God for everything!
