What is prayer by agreement? The Orthodox Church practices what is called “prayer by agreement.” A resource has even been created on the Internet: “My spiritual beacon, prayer by agreement,” a schedule for reading prayers and a set of people who want to pray are listed directly in the group. Believers from different parts of the world agree among themselves that at the same time and during the same period of time they will ask the Almighty for the same thing.

“My Spiritual Beacon”: Prayer by Agreement
Church ministers with experience advise reading prayers by agreement in the most difficult situation, when a person finds himself in a difficult life situation, he is overcome by illness or grief. He needs to find a group of like-minded people who agree to sincerely pray for him, for the fulfillment of his specific request.

In addition, those praying can read the Gospel, akathists, and canons together, inserting the names of those for whom they are asking.
Prayer of this kind is of great benefit, because those praying sincerely ask for another person, and this increases the power of prayer a hundredfold.
However, there are also certain temptations here, one of which is optionality. It would seem that there was an agreement to pray for some time on certain days, but the person misses his reading for certain reasons, and sometimes without them. If this happens, it is necessary to repent and confess.
Not every believer is ready for such a feat, because it requires discipline and enormous responsibility. Therefore, if you are faced with such a need, ask for blessings from your spiritual father.
The plans of the Almighty do not always meet our desires. If the prayer of the person asking was heard, it means it is from the Lord, and if it remains unanswered, then the Almighty has a different understanding. You just need to reconcile and move on, trusting in the mercy of the Lord. Those praying ask the Lord with hope and humility, realizing that God's will is not always clear to man, but everything that is given to man is for his good.

Instructing an unintelligible mind about the Holy Trinity, you were in Nicaea with the holy fathers, a champion of the confession of the Orthodox faith: for you confessed equal to the Father, co-essential and co-throne with the Father, and you denounced the foolish Aria. For this sake, for the sake of faithfulness, I have learned to sing to you:
Rejoice, great pillar of piety; Rejoice, faithful refuge of the city. Rejoice, solid strengthening of Orthodoxy; Rejoice, the honorable One of the Most Holy Trinity was also praised. Rejoice, Thou who preached the Son with equal honor to the Father; Rejoice, you drove away Aria, who was enraged from the Council of Saints. Rejoice, father, glorious beauty of the fathers; Rejoice, wise kindness to all the God-wise. Rejoice, you who utter fiery words; Rejoice, teach your flock well. Rejoice, for through you faith is confirmed; Rejoice, for through you the heresy is being overthrown.
Rejoice, Nicholas, great Wonderworker.

You brought the singing of the Most Holy Trinity to the Most Holy Trinity more than others, most blessed Nicholas, in mind, in word and in deed: for by many trials you have clarified the orthodox commandments, by faith, hope and love, instructing us in the Trinity to chant to the One God: Alleluia.
Ikos 11
We see you as a luminous ray in the darkness of life, unquenchable, chosen by God, Father Nicholas: with the immaterial angelic lights you talk about the uncreated Trinity light, but you enlighten the faithful souls, crying out to you like this:
Rejoice, illumination of the Trisolar Light; Rejoice, day of the never-setting Sun. Rejoice, O luminary, kindled by the Divine flame; Rejoice, for you have extinguished the demonic flame of wickedness. Ikos 12
Singing your miracles, we praise you, O all-praised Nicholas: for in you God, glorified in the Trinity, is wondrously glorified. But even if we bring you many psalms and songs composed from the heart, O miracle-working saint, we do nothing equal to the granting of your miracles, and in wonder at them, we cry out to you like this:
Rejoice, servant of the King of kings and Lord of lords; Rejoice, cohabitants of His heavenly servants. Rejoice, help to faithful people; Rejoice, kind of Christian exaltation. Rejoice, victory of the same name; Rejoice, proud crowned one. Rejoice, mirror of all virtues; Rejoice, everyone who flows to you has been taken away by the strong. Rejoice, all our hope is in God and the Mother of God; Rejoice, health to our bodies and salvation to our souls. Prayer to Saint Nicholas, Archbishop of Myra in Lycia
O all-holy Nicholas, exceedingly saintly servant of the Lord, our warm intercessor, and everywhere in sorrow a quick helper! Help me, a sinner and a sad person, in this present life, beg the Lord God to grant me forgiveness of all my sins, which I have sinned greatly from my youth, in all my life, in deed, word, thought and all my feelings; and at the end of my soul, help me, the accursed one, beg the Lord God, the Creator of all creation, to deliver me from airy ordeals and eternal torment, so that I may always glorify the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit and your merciful intercession, now and ever and unto ages of ages. Amen.
Do you need to think about the time of fulfillment of what you want?
How to read a prayer correctly: My spiritual beacon prayer by agreement
The Almighty has his own timing. Everyone knows the cases from the Holy Scriptures when all imaginable deadlines passed and the Lord fulfilled the request of ardent believers. It is worth remembering Anna and Joachim, Sarah and Abraham, who prayed for many years and the Lord sent them what they wanted when their last hope was fading.
Advice: before you decide to pray by agreement, ask for a blessing from your spiritual mentor, who senses the strength of your faith and your attitude. Tell him that there is a certain situation and you would like to pray to the Lord for its resolution. Indicate the people you would like to take on your team. If the spiritual mentor has given his blessing, then God hear you!
You can speak to God in your own words, for example, you can say this: “Lord, we agreed to pray about such and such a problem, but I didn’t have time to read the prayer (I didn’t find it, missed the appointed time, etc.). God bless them and send them what they ask You for.” The Almighty will hear every prayer if it comes from the heart and with faith.
What is Akathist and when is it read?
Orthodox Christians are required to read the Akathist, as it is one of the key church books. It is important to correctly interpret all the lines written in it.
For a person discovering the religious world, it will not be easy to adapt, especially if his parents did not teach him to serve God from childhood.
The main guidebooks in Orthodoxy are the Bible and Akathist. These books help to learn more about the creation of the world, about the first people on earth, about the life of the son of God on earth; they are man’s guides to God, establishing a subtle spiritual connection between them.
Prayer Team
Is it worth assembling a team of prayer books? Probably worth it. If you are confident in the sincerity of the people praying with you, then their help will be very useful.
However, if there are no such people nearby, you can call everyone who cares about your grief and is ready to pray for you. Persuasion has no place here. After all, if people agreed to help you only out of fear of offending you, their help will be of no use, even if they pray as agreed. The Lord sees the hearts and thoughts of those who pray, and without sincerity and faith in prayer, do not expect success.
A prayer by agreement, said simultaneously by several people about the same thing in different parts of our planet, has enormous power. It is gratifying to understand that this practice is known not only in our country, but also abroad. For example, in America, Indonesia, America, Morocco. However, this prayer is now performed only according to Moscow time. Believers living in a different time zone have a problem getting up in the middle of the night or interrupting their work day.
Order of reading Akathists
An akathist is a song of praise in honor of the Savior, the Mother of God, saints or any holidays (events).
Akathists are not a statutory, obligatory liturgical rite. At services in churches, only the Akathist to the Most Holy Theotokos “Charred Voivode” is necessarily read. "On the Saturday of Praise of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the fifth week of Great Lent. In modern practice during Great Lent, the Akathist of the Passion of the Lord is also used in the rite of Passion, which is served on Sunday evenings in the 2nd-5th weeks of Great Lent.
Akathists in honor of holidays are sometimes read at Matins of a festive service or at a prayer service on the very day of the holiday. In general, at prayer services they often resort to reading akathists. This is how the order of reading the Paraklisis of the Mother of God developed, where at the prayer service after the sixth song of the canon, an akathist to the Mother of God (or to her icons) is read.
Calling upon the holy saints of God to help with everyday needs, akathists are read to them, to the icons of the Mother of God.
There are no special instructions in the Charter for reading akathists in church and during cell (home) prayer. But a rule can be deduced from general church practice: during the period of Great Lent it is not customary to read akathists , except for the Akathist to the Mother of God on the 5th week (on Saturday) and the Akathist to the Passion of Christ. On all other days of the year, reading akathists is permitted.
The akathist itself has a special sequence. So the 13th kontakion is read three times, and immediately after it the first ikos is repeated again, after which the first kontakion is read. At the end of the akathist, a prayer is read.
What akathists to read for everyday needs (for every need)
Akathists to the icons of the Mother of God
Akathists to the saints
Reading akathists during the week
The service of each day of the week corresponds to the memory of a particular event or saint. In accordance with this rule, the practice arose of reading akathists throughout the week, imitating the weekly liturgical circle:
Day of the week | Recollected Event | Reading tradition |
Sunday | (memory of the Holy Resurrection of Christ) | Akathist to the Resurrection of Christ |
Monday | (In memory of the honest Heavenly Forces of the Ethereal) | Akathist to the Archangel Michael Akathist to the Guardian Angel |
Tuesday | (In memory of the prophet, Forerunner and Baptist of the Lord John) | Akathist to John the Baptist |
Wednesday | (Memory of the Passion of the Savior and memory of the Blessed Virgin Mary) | Akathist to the Sweetest Jesus Akathist to the Most Holy Theotokos |
Thursday | (Holy Apostles and St. Nicholas the Wonderworker) | Akathist to the Apostles Peter and Paul Akathist to St. Nicholas |
Friday | (Memory of the Suffering of the Savior and the Cross of the Lord) | Akathist to the Passion of the Lord Akathist to the Honest and Life-Giving Cross of the Lord |
Saturday | (All Saints and All Souls) | Akathist to all the saints from the ages who have pleased God Akathist to the Most Holy Theotokos Akathist to the departed |
Anthem structure
All akathists are written according to the model of the Great, consisting of 24 kontakia and ikos. That's how many letters there are in the Greek alphabet. With each of them, in order, each chant began. In translated texts, this rule, of course, is not observed, although the number of chants remains the same.
St. Roman Sladkopevets
The names of the parts of the akathist are Greek. Kontakion was originally a scroll or stick on which it was wound for convenience. Therefore, many assume that the kontakia during early Byzantium were significantly larger than the current ones. "Ikos" is translated as "house".
Each pair of kontakion and ikos is united by a common theme. But the first reveals its content briefly, and the second - more extensively. Ikos always consists of 12 “hairetisms” (“haire” - “rejoice”), dedicated to a saint or holiday.
The hymn ends with another special kontakion, containing a special prayer to Christ, the Mother of God or the saint of God, after which first 1 ikos is repeated, then 1 kontakion. In conclusion, a prayer is read.
Rules for reading a prayer book
In order for God or the saints to hear you, you must adhere to the rules of reading the Akathist. This will help you establish a strong connection with the Heavenly forces and then they will quickly heed your requests.
We recommend that before you start praying on your own, go to the temple and listen carefully to how the Akathist is sung there.
Note! Any prayer must be read thoughtfully.
