Texts of prayers of thanksgiving for Holy Communion, how and to whom to read it correctly

Listen online:

Prayer of thanksgiving, first.

I thank You, Lord, my God, that You did not reject me, a sinner, but made me worthy to partake of Your Holy Things. I thank You that You have vouchsafed me, unworthy, to partake of Your most pure heavenly Gifts. But, Lord-Love of Mankind, who died for us and rose again and gave us these terrible life-giving Mysteries for the benefit and sanctification of our souls and bodies, make them also for me to heal my soul and body, to repel every enemy, to enlighten the eyes of my heart, into the peace of my spiritual strength, into firm faith, into unfeigned love, into the enlightenment of the mind, into the observance of Thy commandments, into the increase of Thy divine grace and into the acquisition of Thy Kingdom; so that, being preserved by them in purity before You, I will always remember Your mercy and live no longer for myself, but for You, our Lord and Benefactor. And thus, having departed from this life in the hope of Eternal life, I will come to a place of eternal peace, where the voices of the triumphant do not cease and where the joy of those who look at the indescribable beauty of Your face is endless. For You are the true goal of aspiration and the inexpressible joy of those who love You, Christ our God, and all creation sings to You forever. Amen.

Second prayer, St. Vasily Velikago.

Lord, Christ God, King of the ages and Creator of the whole world

! I thank You for all the blessings that You have given me, and for the communion of Your most pure and life-giving Mysteries. And so I pray to You, O merciful and Lover of Mankind: keep me under Your protection in the shadow of Your wings, and grant me with a clear conscience, until my last breath, to worthily partake of Your Holy Things for the remission of sins and eternal life. For You are the Bread of Life, the Source of sanctification, the Giver of blessings. And we send glory to You, with the Father and the Holy Spirit, now and always and unto ages of ages. Amen.

Third prayer, St. Symeon Metaphrastus.

Lord, who voluntarily gave me Your flesh as food, You are the fire that burns the unworthy! Don't burn me, my Creator! But go into the members of my body, into all the joints, into the entrails, into the heart, and the thorns of all my sins fell. Cleanse my soul, sanctify my thoughts, strengthen me in my activities, enlighten my feelings, imbue me with fear of You. Always protect, protect, take care of me from every deed and word harmful to the soul. Cleanse, wash, arrange me; decorate, admonish and enlighten me. Make me Your temple of the one Spirit and no longer a dwelling place of sin, so that after receiving Communion every evildoer, every passion will flee from me, as from Your house, as from fire. As intercessors for myself, I present to You all the saints, the leaders of the disembodied Powers, Your Forerunner, the wise Apostles and, above them, Your immaculate, most pure Mother. Accept their prayers, my merciful Christ, and make Your servant a son of light. For You, the Merciful One, alone are the sanctification and illumination of our souls. And to You, as befits God and Master, we all send glory to You every day.

Prayer four.

May Your Holy Body, Lord Jesus Christ, our God, be for me for eternal life, and Your precious Blood for the remission of sins: and may this communion be for me joy, health and gladness. At Thy terrible and second coming grant me, a sinner, to stand in Thy glory, through the prayers of Thy Most Pure Mother and all the saints.

Fifth prayer, to the Most Holy Theotokos.

Most Holy Lady Theotokos, light of my darkened soul, hope, protection, refuge, consolation, my joy! I thank You that You have vouchsafed me, unworthy, to partake of the most pure Body and precious Blood of Your Son. You who gave birth to the true Light, enlighten the spiritual eyes of my heart. O Thou who gave birth to the Source of immortality, revive me, deadened by sin. Merciful Mother of the merciful God, have mercy on me and give me tenderness and contrition in my heart, humility in my thoughts, a return to the good thoughts of my mind, in cases of its infatuation. And grant me, until my last breath, without being condemned, to accept the shrine of the most pure Mysteries for the healing of soul and body. And give me tears of repentance and thanksgiving, so that I may sing and glorify You all the days of my life, since You are Blessed and glorified forever. Amen.

Now do You let Your servant go, Master, according to Your word, in peace, for my eyes have seen Your salvation, which You have prepared before the face of all nations, a light to enlighten the Gentiles and the glory of Your people Israel.

Lord's Prayer

Our Father who art in heaven! Hallowed be Thy name; Thy kingdom come; Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

And troparia are read to the saint, according to whose order the liturgy was performed. Option 1, if the Liturgy of St. John Chrysostom was performed, the troparion to St. John is read:

The grace that shone from your lips, like a fiery torch, enlightened the universe. She did not acquire the treasure of the love of money for the world, but she showed us the height of your humility. Father John Chrysostom, teaching us with your writings, pray to the Word - Christ God for the salvation of our souls.

Kontakion

Glory to the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. Pious, most blessed John Chrysostom, you received divine grace from heaven and teach with your lips everyone to worship the One God in the Trinity. We duly praise you, for you are the leader who explains the divine.

And now and always and forever and ever. Amen. Reliable protection of Christians, unchanging Intercessor before the Creator, do not despise the prayerful voices of sinners, but hasten, O Merciful One, to help us, who with faith exclaim to You: “Hurry to intercede and hasten to prayer, Mother of God, always protecting those who honor You.”

Option 2, if the Liturgy of St. Basil the Great was celebrated, the troparion to St. Basil is read:

Your voice filled the whole earth, which accepted your word, with which you worthily taught the foundations of the divine faith, explained the nature of everything that exists, and regulated human morals. Royal priest, reverend father, pray to Christ God for the salvation of our souls.

Kontakion

Glory to the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. You have appeared as the unshakable foundation of the Church, endowing all people with an inalienable treasure and sealing it with your teaching, Rev. Basil revealed from heaven!

And now and always and forever and ever. Amen. Reliable protection of Christians, constant intercessor before the Creator, do not despise the prayerful voices of sinners, but hasten, O Merciful One, to help us, who with faith exclaim to You: hasten to intercede and hasten to pray, Mother of God, always protecting those who worship You.

Option 3, if the Liturgy of the Presanctified Gifts was celebrated, the troparion is read to Saint Gregory the Dvoeslov:

Having received divine grace from above, glorious Gregory, from God, and strengthened by His power, you desired to walk the path of the Gospel - therefore, O All-Blessed One, you received the reward for your labors from Christ - pray to Him that He may save our souls.

Kontakion

Glory to the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. You, Father Gregory, appeared as an imitator of the Chief of the Shepherds of Christ, guiding hosts of monks into the heavenly courtyard, and therefore you taught the sheep of Christ His commandments. Now you rejoice with them and rejoice in the heavenly abodes.

After which the end of the prayers of thanksgiving:

Lord have mercy. (12 times)

Glory to the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, now and always and unto ages of ages. Amen.

We magnify You as the true Mother of God, who gave birth without illness to God the Word, worthy of greater honor than the Cherubim, and incomparably more glorious than the Seraphim.

Prayers of thanksgiving for Holy Communion are read in the Church, after receiving the Divine Body and Blood of Christ in the sacrament of the Eucharist.

Communion is a sacrament performed in church. After it, it is customary to read prayers of thanks.

History of the sacrament

To realize and understand the importance of the sacrament, it is necessary to turn to history, which goes back to the times when the son of the Lord was on Earth.
The sacrament begins with the Last Supper. It was on this evening that Christ, eating with his disciples, gave them bread and wine. It is believed that the bread symbolizes the flesh of Jesus, and the wine symbolizes his blood. In those troubled times, faith was prohibited, and people who preached Christianity were lawbreakers. The rulers tried with all their might to have the pagan faith recognized as the only true one. This is due to the fact that the worship of pagan gods presupposed complete obedience to the monarch. As a rule, the rulers of the country were not distinguished by their mercy; many hated him, but they did not dare to overthrow him, fearing punishment to the gods.

The Christian faith preached opposing ideals, so the emperors, accustomed to committing atrocities, did not want to recognize it. After Christ was crucified, the disciples continued to praise and serve him while facing serious difficulties that were not related to government persecution. They were worried that they could not find a way to honor the teacher who had passed on, because:

  • public speaking was banned;
  • it was forbidden to build churches;
  • there could be no question of any publication of Christian religious literature;
  • It was extremely difficult to preserve any writings.

It was then that the disciples, remembering the words spoken by the teacher at the Last Supper, began to honor him with holy communion. Gradually, priests learned about this tradition and, despite the ban, continued to glorify Christ. However, they could not hold services in the church, since the ruler’s soldiers kept a close watch on everyone who was suspected of serving Jesus.

The priests performed the sacrament under the cover of darkness, which reliably protected them from the eyes of enemies. Even while in custody, the arrested priests did not stop receiving communion, demonstrating how strong their faith was.

Prayer of St. Basil the Great, 2nd

Master Christ God, King of the ages and Creator of all, I thank You for all the good things You have given me, and for the communion of Your most pure and life-giving Sacraments. I pray to You, the Kinder and the Lover of Mankind: keep me under Your roof, and in the shadow of Your wing. And grant me with a clear conscience, even until my last breath, to worthily partake of Your Holy Things, for the remission of sins and eternal life. For You are the living bread, the source of holiness, the giver of good things, and to You we send glory, with the Father and the Holy Spirit, now and ever, and unto the ages of ages. Amen.

Communion in the modern world

Once this tradition took hold, people began to offer prayers of thanksgiving for Holy Communion.
True Christian believers still honor this tradition. Previously, people sometimes took communion in places that were not at all intended for this. Today everything has changed. The sacrament is performed exclusively within the walls of churches, with the exception of cases when it is necessary to give communion to a terminally ill person in a hospital or at home. The liturgy is not a recollection of long-gone events, it represents a continuation of the Last Supper. In this case, the priest is the instrument of the Lord. He exactly repeats the words spoken by Christ during the Last Supper. It is through the priest during the liturgy that Jesus acts.

Prayer to the Most Holy Theotokos, 5th

Most Holy Lady Theotokos, light of my darkened soul, hope, protection, refuge, consolation, my joy, I thank You, for You have vouchsafed me, unworthy, to be a partaker The Most Pure Body and the Honest Blood of Your Son. But having given birth to the true Light, enlighten my intelligent eyes of the heart; You who gave birth to the source of immortality, revive me, deadened by sin; O most merciful and compassionate Mother of God, have mercy on me, and give me tenderness, and contrition in my heart, and humility in my thoughts, and appeal in the captivity of my thoughts; and grant me, until my last breath, to uncondemnably receive the sanctification of the Most Pure Mysteries for the healing of soul and body. And grant me tears of repentance and confession, so that I may sing and praise Thee all the days of my life, for Thou art blessed and glorified forever. Amen.

Now let Thy servant go, Master, according to Thy word, in peace, for my eyes have seen Thy salvation, which Thou hast prepared before the face of all people, a light to reveal the nations, and glory Your people Israel.

Trisagion. Holy Trinity: Our Father:

How often should you take communion?

This is perhaps the most frequently asked question from parishioners to the priest. In the old days, the Holy Mysteries of Christ were compulsorily received by all those present at the liturgy. But sometimes some refused to take part in the sacred rite. In this case, the priests tried to find out the reason for the refusal. Most parishioners motivated this by the fact that they were simply unworthy of such an honor.

Indeed, it is very difficult to find a person who is worthy to take the sacrament, because all people are sinners by nature. However, modern priests consider this an excuse. Communion is a grace given to people, which means refusing it is a great sin.

It is believed that a person who does not take the sacrament for a long time moves away from the Lord. Therefore, spiritual mentors recommend attending every liturgy, while receiving the sacrament. Only in this case will they gain true faith and draw closer to the Lord.

Kontakion, tone 4

Glory: You have appeared as an unshakable foundation for the Church, giving everyone unstealthy dominion by man, sealing it with your commands, the unappeared Reverend Basil.

And now: The representation of Christians is unashamed, the intercession to the Creator is immutable, do not despise the voices of sinful prayers, but advance, as the Good One, to the help of us, faithfully calling to You: hasten to prayer and strive to the supplication of those who ever intercede, the Mother of God, who honor Thee.

If the Liturgy of the Presanctified Gifts read:

How to properly prepare for communion

You need to prepare in a special way to receive the Sacrament. A Christian must analyze his life, understand his mistakes, repent of his sins and have a strong desire to get rid of them by changing his life for the better.

If your health allows, you should fast for several days before communion: limit your consumption of animal products. The believer abstains from idle activities and entertainment, concentrating on spiritual life. Devote most of your time to prayer and reading the Holy Scriptures.

Before communion, they must confess, repenting of their sins. This will cleanse the soul of heavy burdens and prepare it to receive Divine grace.

Prayer of Saint Simeon Metaphrastus, 3rd

Who has given me Thy flesh to eat by Thy will, O fire and scorch of the unworthy, do not scorch me, my Creator; rather, go into my heart, into all my parts, into my womb, into my heart. The thorns of all my sins fell. Cleanse your soul, sanctify your thoughts. Confirm the compositions with the bones together. Enlighten the senses of a simple five. Just nail me to Your fear. Cover me always, keep me, and keep me from every deed and word of the soul. Cleanse, and wash, and adorn me: fertilize, enlighten, and enlighten me. Show me Your village of the one Spirit, and not to anyone the village of sin. Yes, as Thy house is the entrance of communion, like fire every evildoer, every passion flees from me. I offer prayer books to You, all the saints, the orders of the bodiless, Your Forerunner, wise apostles, and to these Your undefiled, pure Mother, and their prayers, O Compassionate Mother, accept, my Christ, and Make Your servant a son of light. For you are sanctification, and the only one of ours, the Good, souls and lordship, and like God and the Master we all ascribe glory to you every day.

Prayers of Thanksgiving for Communion

Before his martyrdom, Christ left his disciples the commandment to celebrate Communion in memory of the Teacher.
He said that the wine and bread eaten during the sacrament are the Blood and Flesh of Christ. At the end of the service and Eucharist, the priest reads prayers of thanksgiving to God for the parishioners.

If there is no time, you can leave immediately after the Eucharist without waiting for the end of the service, but in this case, the holy texts from the prayer book must be read at home independently. It is important to be calm at this moment and read them with reverence.

Reading Features

Communion dates back to the Last Supper, which preceded the execution of Christ. At this meeting of the Savior with the disciples, they were told about the need, using bread and wine as the body and blood of Christ, to communicate (unite) with Him spiritually and follow His commandments.

The priest usually reads prayers of thanksgiving after communion in church, filling every word with sincerity and ardent faith. They are in Church Slavonic, but at home they can also be read in Russian for better understanding.

Reading prayers of thanks after communion fills the soul with joy and peace and allows you to thank the Almighty for the help provided. Sometimes their announcement is taken home. This can be done, the main thing is that no one interferes with their reading. Prayers must be read at home before the image of our Lord in a certain sequence.

Rules for reading prayers

Prayers of thanksgiving for Holy Communion include five separate texts:

  • Thanksgiving - read as a sign of gratitude to the Lord for accepting Christians, despite their sinfulness, as a grafted branch to His people. In addition, they read a petition for spiritual and intimate healing, protection from all enemies. Asking for a Christian to strengthen his faith is also an important point.
  • A prayer to Basil the Great is gratitude to the Lord for strengthening a person in faith and giving him the opportunity to approach the sacrament with a pure soul, which is purified by the Spirit of God. They praise God for the blessings bestowed upon man.
  • The prayer service of Simeon Metaphrastus - in his prayer he compares the Lord with fire, which is capable of both burning a sinner and cleansing him. The text makes a request for cleansing from sins and thanksgiving for this mercy.
  • Petition to Christ - the canon is addressed to Jesus, in which the believer offers thanks to the Son of God for His Blood, which he shed on the cross for humanity.
  • A petition to the Mother of God is a canon of righteousness and purity, which is read with a request for help from the Mother of God for a person before the Creator.

After reading these prayers, kontakia and troparia are read to the saint in whose name the liturgy was performed.

In order to enter the Kingdom of Heaven after earthly life and receive eternal life, every Orthodox Christian must receive communion. Without this, it is impossible to achieve perfection in spiritual life. God's grace, which the believer will receive during communion, will strengthen his faith, help in the fight against sinful passions, and will have a healing effect.

Texts and order of prayers in Russian

After the end of the Liturgy, prayers of thanksgiving for Holy Communion are read for everyone. If for some reason the thanksgiving prayer was not read or the believer did not stay after Communion, then you can read these texts at home. Thanking the Lord for His mercy, it is important to feel peace and tranquility of spirit.

First

This prayer offers gratitude to God for not turning away from people and allowing them to partake of His Holy Gifts.

“I thank You, Lord, my God, that You did not reject me, a sinner, but made me worthy to partake of Your Holy Things. Amen".

Second, Basil the Great

The saint wrote a prayer to thank the Lord for all his gifts. For having endowed me with unshakable faith, cleansed my soul and allowed me to touch the Great Sacraments of the Church.

“Master, Christ God, King of the ages and Creator of the whole world! Amen".

Third, Symeon Metaphrastus

The third is the prayer of Simeon Metaphrastus. In it, God is represented as a fire that burns the unworthy. With this prayer, Christians turn to the Lord with a request to burn away everything sinful that is in their soul.

“Lord, who voluntarily gave me Your flesh for food, You are the fire that burns the unworthy! And to You, as befits God and Master, we all send glory to You every day.”

Fourth

This prayer is very short, but endowed with the deepest meaning. The goal of any true Christian is eternal life. This is exactly what believers ask for in the words of prayer. And also - to show your mercy on the Day of Judgment.

“May Your Holy Body, Lord Jesus Christ our God, be for me for eternal life, and Your precious Blood for the remission of sins: and may this communion be for me joy, health and gladness. At Thy terrible and second coming grant me, a sinner, to stand in Thy glory, through the prayers of Thy Most Pure Mother and all the saints.”

Fifth, to the Blessed Virgin Mary

The prayer to the Mother of God is filled with sincere, pure love. It contains words of gratitude for the birth of the Savior, for the fact that now everyone can partake of his blood and body.

“Most Holy Lady Theotokos, light of my darkened soul, hope, protection, refuge, consolation, my joy! Amen. Now do You let Your servant go, O Master, according to Your word, in peace, for mine eyes have seen Your salvation, which You have prepared before the face of all nations, a light to enlighten the Gentiles and the glory of Your people Israel.”

Trisagion

After reading the five main prayers, the Trisagion hymn is sung.

“Holy God, Holy Mighty, Holy Immortal, have mercy on us. (Bow)

Holy God, Holy Mighty, Holy Immortal, have mercy on us. (Bow)

Holy God, Holy Mighty, Holy Immortal, have mercy on us. (Bow)

Glory to the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, now and always, and forever and ever. Amen".

To the Most Holy Trinity

Following the song, the communicants turn to the Most Holy Trinity with a request to deliver them from their sins.

“Most Holy Trinity, have mercy on us. Lord, cleanse our sins. Master, forgive our iniquities. Holy One, visit and heal our infirmities, for Thy name's sake.

Lord have mercy. (Thrice)

Glory to the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, now and always, and forever and ever. Amen".

God's

Our Father is the main Orthodox prayer. Jesus himself gave it to his disciples. With her words, Christians ask God for permission to call him Father and address him as Father, in the hope of the parental love of the Creator for his children.

“Our Father who art in heaven! Hallowed be Thy name; Thy kingdom come; Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.”

Troparion

Next the troparion is sung. It explains the essence of the holiday. The story is told about the life of the saint in whose honor the Liturgy is held. And troparia are read to the saint, according to whose order the liturgy was performed. Option 1, if the Liturgy of St. John Chrysostom was performed, the troparion to St. John is read:

“The grace that shone from your lips, like a fiery torch, enlightened the universe. She did not acquire the treasure of the love of money for the world, but she showed us the height of your humility. Father John Chrysostom, teaching us with your writings, pray to the Word - Christ God for the salvation of our souls."

Option 2, if the Liturgy of St. Basil the Great was celebrated, the troparion to St. Basil is read:

“Your voice filled the whole earth, which received your word, with which you worthily taught the foundations of the divine faith, explained the nature of everything that exists, and regulated human morals. Royal priest, reverend father, pray to Christ God for the salvation of our souls.”

Option 3, if the Liturgy of the Presanctified Gifts was celebrated, the troparion is read to Saint Gregory the Dvoeslov:

“Receiving divine grace from above, glorious Gregory, from God, and strengthened by His power, you desired to walk the path of the Gospel, - therefore, O All-Blessed One, you received the reward for your labors from Christ, - pray to Him that He may save our souls.”

Kontakion

The kontakion glorifies the same events from the life of the saint as the troparion. However, the kontakion is more extensive and contains additions.

Option 1, if the Liturgy of St. John Chrysostom was performed, the kontakion is read to St. John

Glory to the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit:

“Pious, most blessed John Chrysostom, you received divine grace from heaven and teach with your lips everyone to worship the One God in the Trinity.

Basil the Great was celebrated, the kontakion is read to St. Basil:

“Glory to the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. You have appeared as the unshakable foundation of the Church, endowing all people with an inalienable treasure and sealing it with your teaching, Rev. Basil revealed from heaven! And now and always and forever and ever. Amen. Reliable defense of Christians, unfailing intercessor before the Creator, do not despise the prayerful voices of sinners, but hasten, O Merciful One, to help us, who cry out to Thee with faith: hasten to intercede and hasten to pray, O Mother of God, always protecting those who worship Thee.”

Option 3, if the Liturgy of the Presanctified Gifts was celebrated, the kontakion is read to Saint Gregory the Dvoeslov:

“Glory to the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. You, Father Gregory, appeared as an imitator of the Chief of the Shepherds of Christ, guiding hosts of monks into the heavenly courtyard, and therefore you taught the sheep of Christ His commandments. Now you rejoice with them and rejoice in the heavenly abodes.

Prayers after Holy Communion

Every Christian knows when this Sacrament is performed - it is performed at the end of the Divine Liturgy every day. But before undergoing this Sacrament, it is necessary to confess. After the ritual is completed for everyone, the priest begins to read a prayer of thanksgiving in Russian after Communion.

It often happens that after the end of the service, a believer, returning home, picks up a prayer book and begins to read petitions at home in front of the image of the Mother of God or the Most High. It is very important to be completely calm at such moments. The petition after the ritual includes several prayers at once: St. Basil the Great, Simeon’s prayer, a short fourth petition, and the Mother of God. The final petition is one of gratitude.
