Akathist of thanksgiving for Holy Communion

Akathist to the Lord Jesus Christ, after communion of the Holy Mysteries of Christ,

creation of the holy martyr Seraphim (Zvezdinsky)

Kontakion 1

Chosen by the Voivod and Lord, by Your Holy Mysteries, You have conquered hell in my soul now! By Your Holy Mysteries You have now incomprehensibly removed the burden of sin from my conscience. Behold, I am an unworthy communicant of Your Mysteries, and I will sing praises to You: Jesus, the Living Bread, the Heavenly Bread, the Sweetest Bread, I thank you for Your Holy Mysteries!

Ikos 1

Angels of God, Seraphim of the six-crylation, Cherubim of many eyes, Thrones of fire, Dominions, Powers, Divine Powers, Principalities, Archangels, Angels of all! You cover your faces before Christ’s Terrible Mysteries, you look at the Chalice with the God-creating Blood with great fear and trembling. But I, stinking and sinful, dared to approach this Chalice, by you, the fiery servant of God, not rejected by an invisible force? For this reason, imitating your silent hymns, marveling at the Divine condescension, I cry out to my long-suffering Lord with gratitude: Jesus, like the Seraphim, like a fiery burning Love, mysteriously visible, I thank You, because You have now bestowed upon me, unworthy of Your immeasurable love, abundantly in the Most Pure Mysteries. Jesus, like Cherubim, like Wisdom, I take forth the luminous, contemplated one, I thank Thee, for by Thy most pure Mysteries Thou hast moved my mind to see the invisible abyss of Thy destinies. Jesus, rest strangely on the fiery Throne, I thank Thee, for in me you rest indecently with Your Holy Mysteries, as on the Throne. Jesus, invisibly carried by the ranks above, I thank Thee, for Thou hast now favored me, the long-lasting one, to bear Thee within me. Jesus, unceasing wonder of all the Armies of Heaven, I thank You, for You have now surprised me with Your countless mercies. Jesus, Living Bread, Heavenly Bread, Sweetest Bread, I thank you for Your Holy Mysteries!

Kontakion 2

I now see that by Your holy Mysteries I am healed from the leprosy of my soul, for this sake, like the leper Samaritan, I fall on my face at Your foot, Jesus my Healer, with a great voice lifting up Your praise: Alleluia.

Ikos 2

No one’s mind, neither above nor below, can comprehend how the whole of Heaven, inconceivable by His holy Mysteries, is contained entirely within me. Even though I have not comprehended this Mystery, which is unspeakable, but I now feel it within myself, I call upon You with trepidation: Jesus, in Bethany you entered into the house of Martha and Mary, I thank You, for you have now entered into the house of my fallen soul with mercy. Jesus, who conversed with Mary about a single need, I thank Thee, for now you converse with me sweetly and most sweetly, and with this sweet conversation comfort me when I am sad and warm. Jesus, true Vine, I thank You as if I were the wild rod that fell away from You, but You have grafted it back to Yourself. Jesus, the source of immortality, I thank Thee, for Thou hast now given me, filled with a sinful thirst, Thy Honest Blood to drink. Jesus, kissed by the harlot, I thank Thee, for in Thy Holy Mysteries Thou hast granted me, the harlot, to kiss Thee, not just with my lips, but with my soul and heart and with all my thoughts. Jesus, Living Bread, Heavenly Bread, Sweetest Bread, I thank Thee for Thy Holy Mysteries!

Kontakion 3

You have filled me with strong strength, weak and cowardly, through the communion of Your Most Pure Mysteries, thus strengthened against my visible and invisible enemies, I victoriously sing to You: Alleluia.

Ikos 3

Having an unsearchable abyss of mercy, with publicans and sinners I ate and drank, and now, like them, Your Mystery Table is strangely filled, I exclaim with tenderness to You, my Benefactor: Jesus, friend of publicans and sinners, I thank you, for I am the least sinner at the supper By Your Secret, as if You were Your friend, You have made Him sit with You. Jesus, the publican Zacchaeus most mercifully hovered, I thank You, for in me, now accursed, you are now most mercifully hovering and thus instructing me towards correction. Jesus, the fatted calf slain by the father to the prodigal son, (and this) depicted in the parable, I thank Thee, for Thou hast now sacrificed Thyself to the prodigal me as food. Jesus, in Your Gospel you say: “Health does not require a doctor, but those who are sick,” I thank You, as I, who was sick and ulcerated with sinful wounds, have now been miraculously healed by Your Mysteries. Jesus, Good Shepherd, I thank You, as I, the lost sheep, now You have mercifully lifted me onto Your most pure shoulder and You have embraced me warmly with Your arms. Jesus, Living Bread, Heavenly Bread, Sweetest Bread, I thank Thee for Thy Holy Mysteries!

Kontakion 4

The storm of passions has confused my soul, but You, Lord, in Your Holy Mysteries entered into me, as I was once agitated by the sea, You forbade this spiritual storm, saying: “Be silent, stop!” And now there is great silence, now Your peace is within me, surpassing every mind. Moreover, with a humble soul I cry to You: Alleluia.

Ikos 4

I hear, Lord, who have now received Your Most Pure Mysteries, Your sweetest voice in my heart, silently speaking all truth, all righteousness. For this reason, I dare to proclaim to You: Jesus, Good Teacher, I thank You, for through Your Most Pure Mysteries you have now taught me humility, meekness, love, compassion. Jesus, Your flesh, nailed to the Cross, strangely given to me as food, I thank You, for with this food you strengthen my flesh with the passions and lusts of crucifying me. Jesus, who went up to Golgotha with Your Cross, I thank You, as with Your Holy Mysteries, You encourage me to patiently bear my cross. Jesus, who prayed from the Cross for Your enemies, I thank You, as I, a partaker of Your Mysteries, call upon me to pray for my enemies. Jesus, having given me Thy Body and Thy Blood for the remission of sins, I thank Thee, for with these Thou hast now commanded me to forgive all sins, all insults to those who hate and offend me. Jesus, Living Bread, Heavenly Bread, Sweetest Bread, I thank Thee for Thy Holy Mysteries!

Kontakion 5

John, Your beloved disciple, who idolizes Your Blood, having seen it flow from Your pierced side, testifies to this reality in the Gospel. And now, having seen this source of immortality flowing into my entire being, I testify to this with a song of gratitude: Alleluia.

Ikos 5

Having seen You, the God-seers of the Divine Moses and Elijah, covered themselves with stones and mercy with fear and trembling, but I, the accursed one, now contemplating You within myself, with what will I cover myself? Is it only by Thy immeasurable mercy that I cry: Jesus, seen far away by the prophets, I thank Thee, for He has vouchsafed me to see Thee near in Thy Holy Mysteries. Jesus, preached by the Apostles, I thank Thee, for during the Divine Liturgy my ears heard this immortal preaching of Thy: “Come, eat, this is My Body, which was broken for you for the remission of sins. Drink of me, all of you, this is My Blood of the New Testament, which is shed for you and for many for the remission of sins.” Jesus, confessed by the martyrs, I thank Thee, for Thou hast deigned me also before Thy cup to confess Thee: “I believe, O Lord, and I confess that Thou art truly the Christ, the Son of the Living God.” Jesus, ever called upon by the venerables in prayer, I thank Thee, just as I am now in me for something to pray to the ignorant, myself praying with unspoken sighs, calling out “Abba Father!” Jesus, offered by the saints and priests on the altars of the saints in the Bloodless Sacrifice, I thank Thee, for Thou hast strangely now made me Thy Altar. Jesus, Living Bread, Heavenly Bread, Sweetest Bread, I thank Thee for Thy Holy Mysteries!

Kontakion 6

I preach, O Lord, Your grace, I confess Your mercy, I do not hide the blessings, which You have now abundantly poured out on me in Your Holy Mysteries, I sing and cry out to You: Alleluia.

Ikos 6

The bright sun has risen in the darkness of my soul from the reception now of Your Most Pure Mysteries. Illuminated by this Heavenly light, I cry out to You: Jesus, Quiet Light, I thank You, for in my darkness you are a bright light, and my darkness does not embrace You. Jesus, Radiance of the Father's Glory, I thank You, for in Your light I see the Light of the Father, the Light of the Holy Spirit. Jesus, who stretched out the sky like a skin, I thank Thee, for in me, you have now mysteriously stretched out the sky. Jesus, Whom the sun sings, Whom the moon praises, Whom the stars pray to, I thank Thee, for with Thy Holy Mysteries Thou hast moved me all to sing, to glorify Thee, to pray to Thee. O Most Beautiful Jesus, the most beautiful Bridegroom, gathered at midnight by the wise virgins with burning lamps, I thank Thee, for Thou hast rekindled the lamp of my heart, which has now gone out. Jesus, Living Bread, Heavenly Bread, Sweetest Bread, I thank Thee for Thy Holy Mysteries!

Kontakion 7

I want, Lord, having felt You in Your Holy Mysteries, to never be separated from You, to always enjoy You, to always abide in You, to always sing gratefully to You: Alleluia.

Ikos 7

Marvelous, wonderful, incomprehensible are Your Most Pure Mysteries, O Lord! Having been dead in soul, now having received communion, I live with my whole being! To you, my Resurrector, I cry with great thanksgiving: Jesus, you called four-day Lazarus from the tomb, I thank you, just as you also called me, stinking with sin, from my stinking tomb. Jesus, the Source of ever-flowing eternal life, I thank You, as if I, through negligence, had so poorly been separated from this Source, now You have wonderfully reunited me with Him. Jesus, this stream of inexplicable sweetness, I thank You, for You have now filled my entire inner being with this sweetness. Jesus, everlasting joy of the Heavenly Orders, I thank Thee, for with Thy Holy Mysteries, Thou hast filled all of me, suppressed with sadness, with spiritual joy and joy of the Divine, and lifted me up when I was so bent. Jesus, Consolation of those who grieve, I thank You, as for me, the sorrow of all that is oppressed and oppressed, You have now brought forth into Your wide, gracious expanse. Jesus, Living Bread, Heavenly Bread, Sweetest Bread, I thank Thee for Thy Holy Mysteries!

Kontakion 8

It is strange now, O Christ, that according to Thy word Thou abide in me, and I abide in Thee. It’s strange, like the righteous Simeon, I now hold Thee! O Lord, my Lord! That I am, because you remember me! What am I, as if you were visiting me! Crowned with such glory and honor from You, I exclaim with gratitude to You: Alleluia.

Ikos 8

All like red-hot iron, I am imbued with fire, now I am immersed, filled, saturated with You, Lord God! Now I know that I am truly Yours, and for this sake I sing: Jesus, to Whom was grace and Truth, I thank Thee, for from Your fulfillment I have now received grace to reward. Jesus, Eternal Mind, I thank Thee, for with Thy Holy Mysteries Thou hast awakened (my) mountain mind to wisdom. Most Mighty Jesus, I thank you, for you have now wonderfully strengthened my will, weakened by sin. Jesus, renewer of our souls, I thank Thee, for Thou hast wonderfully renewed me, who had become worn out through placeless deeds. Jesus, Living Bread, Heavenly Bread, Sweetest Bread, I thank Thee for Thy Holy Mysteries!

Kontakion 9

My whole nature, Lord Jesus Christ, now rejoices at Your merciful visit, celebrates, rejoices, magnifies You and sings to You a victorious song: Alleluia.

Ikos 9

The human tongue, lower than the angelic one, cannot describe the greatness of Your Most Pure Mysteries, O Lord, how, under the guise of bread, You nourished me with Your Most Pure Body, and how, under the guise of wine, You gave me Your idolizing Blood to drink. Oh, Living Lord, I cry out to You with trembling: Jesus, you alone work miracles, I thank You, for in me you have now performed a great miracle. Jesus, who have called Thy kinsmen to do Thy will, I thank Thee, for by the acceptance of Thy Mysteries Thou hast now made me intimate and co-corporeal with Thee. Jesus, incomprehensible God, I thank You, for you have granted me to now be a partaker of the Divine nature. Jesus, having supper with Thy apostles in the upper room of Zion, I thank Thee, for in my wretched soul Thou hast now created an upper room for Thyself. Jesus, who washed Himself as a disciple at the Supper, I thank Thee, for with Thy Mysteries Thou hast washed all of me from the filth of flesh and spirit. Jesus, Living Bread, Heavenly Bread, Sweetest Bread, I thank Thee for Thy Holy Mysteries!

Kontakion 10

To the Savior God, who gave me His Most Pure Mysteries as food and with these deified me, I sing: Alleluia.

Prayer of thanksgiving, 1st

I thank You, Lord, my God, for You have not rejected me as a sinner, but have made me worthy to be a partaker of Your holy things. I thank You, for You have vouchsafed me, who is unworthy, to partake of Your Most Pure and Heavenly Gifts. But the Lord, the Lover of Mankind, for our sake, died and rose again, and granted us this terrible and life-giving Sacrament for the benefit and sanctification of our souls and bodies, grant this to me for the healing of soul and body, for the driving away of all that is resistant, for the enlightenment of the eyes of my heart , into the peace of my spiritual strength, into unashamed faith, into unfeigned love, into the fulfillment of wisdom, into the observance of Thy commandments, into the application of Thy Divine grace and the appropriation of Thy Kingdom; Yes, we preserve them in Your shrine, I always remember Your grace, and I live not for myself, but for You, our Master and Benefactor; and thus having gone from this life to the hope of the eternal life, I will achieve everlasting peace, where those who celebrate the unceasing voice and endless sweetness, who behold the ineffable kindness of Your face. For You are the true desire and the inexpressible joy of those who love You, Christ our God, and all creation sings to You forever. Amen.

Prayer 2, St. Basil the Great

Master Christ God, King of the ages, and Creator of all, I thank Thee for all the good things He has given me, and for the communion of Thy most pure and life-giving Mysteries. I pray to Thee, O Kinder and Lover of Mankind: keep me under Thy roof, and in the shadow of Thy wing; and grant me with a clear conscience, even until my last breath, to worthily partake of Your holy things, for the remission of sins and eternal life. For You are the living bread, the source of holiness, the Giver of good things, and we send up glory to You, with the Father and the Holy Spirit, now and ever, and to the ages of ages. Amen.

Prayer 3, Simeon Metaphrastus

Having given me flesh by Your will, fire and scorch the unworthy, do not scorch me, my Creator; rather, go into my mouth, into all my parts, into my womb, into my heart. The thorns of all my sins fell. Cleanse your soul, sanctify your thoughts. Confirm the compositions with the bones together. Enlighten the simple five of feelings. Fill me with Thy fear. Cover me always, keep me, and save me from every deed and word of the soul. Cleanse and wash and adorn me; Fertilize, enlighten, and enlighten me. Show me Your village of the one Spirit, and not to anyone the village of sin. Yes, like Your house, the entrance of communion, like fire, every evildoer, every passion flees from me. I offer prayer books to You, all the saints, the orders of the disembodied, Your Forerunner, the wise Apostles, and to this Your undefiled, pure Mother, graciously accept their prayers, my Christ, and make Your servant a son of light. For You are the sanctification and the only one of ours, the Good One, of souls and lordship; and like unto You, like God and the Master, we send all glory every day.

Prayer 4

May Thy Holy Body, Lord Jesus Christ, our God, be unto me for eternal life, and Thy Honorable Blood for the remission of sins: may this thanksgiving be unto me joy, health and gladness; at Thy terrible and second coming, vouchsafe me, a sinner, to the right hand of Thy glory, through the prayers of Thy Most Pure Mother and all the saints.

Prayer 5, to the Most Holy Theotokos

Most Holy Lady Theotokos, light of my darkened soul, hope, protection, refuge, consolation, joy, I thank Thee, for Thou hast vouchsafed me, unworthy, to be a partaker of the Most Pure Body and Honest Blood of Thy Son. But She who gave birth to the true Light, enlighten my intelligent eyes of the heart; You who gave birth to the Source of immortality, revive me, killed by sin; Even the merciful Mother of God, have mercy on me, and give me tenderness and contrition in my heart, and humility in my thoughts, and appeal in the captivity of my thoughts; and grant me, until my last breath, to receive consecration of the most pure Mysteries without condemnation, for the healing of soul and body. And give me tears of repentance and confession, to sing and praise Thee all the days of my life, for Thou art blessed and glorified forever. Amen.

Now do You let Your servant go, O Master, according to Your word, in peace: for my eyes have seen Your salvation, which You have prepared before the face of all people, a light for the revelation of tongues and the glory of Your people Israel.

Trisagion. Holy Trinity... Our Father...

Troparion of St. John Chrysostom, tone 8

With your lips, like the lordship of fire, grace shining forth, enlighten the universe: do not gain the love of money and the treasures of the world, showing us the height of humility, but chastising with your words, Father John Chrysostom, pray to the Word of Christ God to save our souls.

Kontakion, tone 6

Glory: You have received Divine grace from heaven, and through your lips you have taught us all to worship the one God in the Trinity. All-blessed John Chrysostom, Reverend, we worthily praise you: you are a mentor, as if you are manifesting the Divine.

And now: The intercession of Christians is not shameful, the intercession to the Creator is immutable, do not despise the voices of sinful prayers, but advance, as the Good One, to the aid of us who faithfully call Thee: hasten to prayer, and strive to supplicate, ever interceding, the Mother of God, who honor Thee.

If the Liturgy of St. Basil the Great was celebrated, read

Troparion to Basil the Great, tone 1:

Thy message went out into the whole earth, as if it had received your word, which thou hast divinely taught, thou hast clarified the nature of beings, thou hast adorned human customs, the royal priesthood, reverend father, pray to Christ God that our souls may be saved.

Kontakion, tone 4

Glory: You have appeared as an unshakable foundation for the church, giving to all inconspicuous dominion by man, sealing with your commands, the unappearing Reverend Basil.

And now: Representation of Christians...

If the Liturgy of the Presanctified Gifts was celebrated, read

Troparion to Saint Gregory the Dialogue, tone 4:

Whom have we received from God above divine grace, O glorious Gregory, and whom we strengthen with strength, who thou hast deigned to walk in the gospel, from whom thou hast most blessedly received from Christ the recompense of labor: pray unto him that he may save our souls.

Kontakion, tone 3

Glory: You appeared to the Chief to be the shepherd of Christ, the monks of the succession, Father Gregory, instructing the heavenly fence, and from there you taught the flock of Christ with His commandment: now you rejoice with them, and rejoice in the heavenly roofs.

And now: Representation of Christians...

Lord have mercy. (12 times) Glory, even now.

We magnify Thee, the most honorable Cherub and the most glorious without comparison, the Seraphim, who gave birth to God the Word without corruption, the real Mother of God.

The importance of communion in Orthodoxy

The meaning of communion for an Orthodox person is incomparably higher than any other church rites. This is the very essence of Orthodoxy, the moment of physical unity with God. The first Eucharist was celebrated by Jesus Christ himself for his disciples during the Last Supper on Maundy Thursday. He gave them bread and wine to taste, saying that it was his flesh and blood, and ordered them to continue this tradition. This event is described in the Gospel. Communion of the body and blood of the Lord serves as a reminder to all Christians of the sacrifice made by the Savior. Through the Eucharist, Jesus established the New Covenant on earth, abolishing the bloody sacrifices of the Old Testament.

Important! The Sacrament of Communion cannot be perceived simply as a memory of an event that occurred at the Last Supper.

Just as our physical body needs food, so our soul needs Communion. It is difficult to comprehend the essence of this Sacrament with the mind; it must be felt. Pass through the soul. During communion, our body receives, under the guise of bread and wine, not physical food, but spiritual food. A person lets a piece of God into himself. Realizes the connection between the Lord and his creation. Takes the path of spiritual salvation.

To understand the importance of Communion, we can draw the following analogy. A person is born in the flesh only once, but in order to remain alive, he must nourish his flesh with food throughout his entire life. Baptism also happens once, but you need to receive communion throughout your life so that the soul does not become hungry and hardened.

In Orthodoxy, the body and blood of the Lord are not symbolism. Through the hands of the priests celebrating the Eucharist, God himself transforms bread and wine into his most pure blood and flesh. And only in this way, through Communion, can a true Christian find salvation and eternal life. You need to be grateful to the Lord God for such an opportunity. However, those who do not believe that they are tasting the true body and blood of the Lord should not approach the holy cup.

Lord's Prayer

Our Father who art in heaven! Hallowed be Thy name; Thy kingdom come; Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

And troparia are read to the saint, according to whose order the liturgy was performed. Option 1, if the Liturgy of St. John Chrysostom was performed, the troparion to St. John is read:

The grace that shone from your lips, like a fiery torch, enlightened the universe. She did not acquire the treasure of the love of money for the world, but she showed us the height of your humility. Father John Chrysostom, teaching us with your writings, pray to the Word - Christ God for the salvation of our souls.

Kontakion

Glory to the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. Pious, most blessed John Chrysostom, you received divine grace from heaven and teach with your lips everyone to worship the One God in the Trinity. We duly praise you, for you are the leader who explains the divine.

And now and always and forever and ever. Amen. Reliable protection of Christians, unchanging Intercessor before the Creator, do not despise the prayerful voices of sinners, but hasten, O Merciful One, to help us, who with faith exclaim to You: “Hurry to intercede and hasten to prayer, Mother of God, always protecting those who honor You.”

Option 2, if the Liturgy of St. Basil the Great was celebrated, the troparion to St. Basil is read:

Your voice filled the whole earth, which accepted your word, with which you worthily taught the foundations of the divine faith, explained the nature of everything that exists, and regulated human morals. Royal priest, reverend father, pray to Christ God for the salvation of our souls.

Kontakion

Glory to the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. You have appeared as the unshakable foundation of the Church, endowing all people with an inalienable treasure and sealing it with your teaching, Rev. Basil revealed from heaven!

And now and always and forever and ever. Amen. Reliable protection of Christians, constant intercessor before the Creator, do not despise the prayerful voices of sinners, but hasten, O Merciful One, to help us, who with faith exclaim to You: hasten to intercede and hasten to pray, Mother of God, always protecting those who worship You.

Option 3, if the Liturgy of the Presanctified Gifts was celebrated, the troparion is read to Saint Gregory the Dvoeslov:

Having received divine grace from above, glorious Gregory, from God, and strengthened by His power, you desired to walk the path of the Gospel - therefore, O All-Blessed One, you received the reward for your labors from Christ - pray to Him that He may save our souls.

Kontakion

Glory to the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. You, Father Gregory, appeared as an imitator of the Chief of the Shepherds of Christ, guiding hosts of monks into the heavenly courtyard, and therefore you taught the sheep of Christ His commandments. Now you rejoice with them and rejoice in the heavenly abodes.

After which the end of the prayers of thanksgiving:

  • Lord have mercy. (12 times)
  • Glory to the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, now and always and unto ages of ages. Amen.
  • We magnify You as the true Mother of God, who gave birth without illness to God the Word, worthy of greater honor than the Cherubim, and incomparably more glorious than the Seraphim.
  • After Communion of the Body and Blood of the Lord, let everyone remain in purity, abstinence and laconicism, so as to worthily preserve within themselves the Christ received.
