The history of the appearance of the akathist to Samon, Guria and Aviv

The three husbands lived at different times, but their exploits were united by the church. On the icon they are depicted as people of different ages. Samon and Gury were laymen who were persecuted under the Emperor Diocletian. They were captured and brutally tortured, trying to force them to worship the pagan gods. Seeing the intransigence of the prisoners, they were kept in prison for 3 months (according to other sources, they spent several years in prison), then they were tortured again and beheaded.

Aviv was a deacon and suffered under the emperor Licinius. He was captured because of a denunciation, they tried to convince him to renounce his faith, but, seeing the saint’s steadfastness, they burned him. Aviv's body was found unharmed and buried along with Samon and Gury.

The saints performed several miracles after their death. The most famous is the miracle of the salvation of the Edessa girl.

At the end of the 4th century, during the invasion of the Huns, one of them stayed in the house of a Christian widow. The soldier liked the daughter of the owner, Euphemia, and he persuaded the widow to give her daughter to him. Having brought the girl into the house, the Hun said that he already had a wife and children, and Euphemia would be a servant.

Soon Euphemia gave birth, the Hun’s wife understood everything and poisoned the baby. Euphemia noticed the poison on the child’s lips, carefully removed it with a cloth and soaked it in a goblet of wine that the hostess was drinking. The woman died, the relatives blamed Euphemia for everything and decided to bury her alive. The girl fervently prayed to the saints, they appeared to her and carried her to her mother.

A year later, the Hun came to the widow and began to tell how well her daughter was living with him. But when Euphemia entered the room, the man was forced to confess everything. He was captured and executed.

Martyrs' Remembrance Day is celebrated on November 28. The Akathist of Saints is not approved by the church for public use, but lay people can read it at home.

Akathist to the holy martyrs Guria, Samon and Aviv, heavenly patrons of marriage

The most remarkable phenomenon that started the popularity of the saints was the miracle of the salvation of the pious Euphemia from her tormenting husband. Of course, in addition to this situation, many other amazing things were created by the will of the sacred sufferers, but this seems to be one of the tangible and exemplary support that they provide to the laity.

Among the local Edessa Christians, Guri, Samon and Aviv were famous, as well as those whose lives, legends and deaths became the measure of piety and devotion to the oath of the Lord. Consequently, uttering oaths before taking Euphemia as a wife, her future husband was brought to the tomb of the sufferers, so that their holy spirit would become the guardian and benefactor of the pious.

The whole point is that a foreign Goth fighter, whose service was in Edessa, noticed Euphemia earlier and came to beg her mother for betrothal. However, bad rumors followed him, as if he was married, and wanted to seduce Euphemia as his concubine. Suspicion invaded the soul of the idolizing mother, but there were no factors for disagreement. Consequently, having surrendered to the freedom of the Almighty and having secured the intercession of the sacred sufferers, Euphemia found herself married to a Goth.

What was her amazement when, arriving at her husband’s home, Euphemia noticed proof of the rumor - her husband and children were waiting for the soldier of the home. The following catastrophic events became a great test for the pious Christian virgin. The Goth wife killed Euphemia's newborn son with poison. She instantly realized this when she saw bloody foam on the lips of the lifeless baby. Carefully taking its fragments with a cloth, Euphemia plunged them into the goblet - she immediately gave up the ghost, poisoned by the poison of her own baseness.

Having not come up with anything better, the Goth liar is ready to decide to bury his dead Goth wife and the living Euphemia in the same grave, in order to hide the traces of his own lies. Prayers for support were cut off from the lips of the pious; she prayed to Guria, Samon and Aviva - those whom she took as intercessors and eyewitnesses of the liar’s oath.

God did not allow the undeserved death of poor Euphemia, carried away by lies, and transferred her to her mother’s home. And after a certain period, the Goth was again destined to end up in Edessa. There, as if nothing had happened, he stepped onto the threshold of his father’s home with his fooled mother. The unfulfilled relatives, when asked by the father and mother about their daughter, deceived and told fables about the prosperous existence of his own wife and multiple offspring. As a result, all his deception was revealed, and a bad fate awaited the perjurer - a death sentence.

When and why do they read the akathist?

Saints are considered the patrons of marriage. They are prayed for strong marital happiness and harmony in the family, for the preservation of the family and the resolution of all kinds of problems. It is especially recommended to turn to martyred wives from whom their husbands have separated.

You can pray to the martyrs any day - read a prayer and akathist, go to church for communion and confession. It is especially recommended to remember them on Memorial Day.

Kontakion 2 Having seen Christ the Lord your virtuous life, Saints Guria, Samon and Aviv, through whom, like the lights of no one in the city of Edessa, naturally shone, you have been vouchsafed for His name to drink the cup of suffering and by that sad and narrow path to enter into His Kingdom, where now the angels and All the saints are welcomed, singing to God: Alleluia! Ikos 2 A God-enlightened mind has been granted to you, holy martyrs, by whom you clearly understood the soul-destroying futility of idolatry, and shied away from it, while you naturally tried to seek Christ with all your soul. We also appeal to you:

Rejoice, blessed followers of Christ; Rejoice, lover of His most sincere commandments. Rejoice, smell the fragrance of the highest paradise; Rejoice, beautiful flowers of the Vertograd of Jesus. Ikos 3 Having the eyes of your soul darkened by malice, Hegemon Antoninus did not want to delve into the mind of your Divine words, but you, saints, were tempted first by caressing words, wanting to turn you away from Christ, but seeing that you are adamant in the faith and confession of Christ, you were cast into a strong prison. We please you, we say:

Rejoice, having loved Christ with all your soul; Rejoice, for His Name was cast into a dark prison. Rejoice, you who were jealous of the Apostle; Rejoice, you preacher of Christ’s teachings without silence. Rejoice, teacher of piety; Rejoice, disgrace of wickedness. Rejoice, for your wounds are like valuable utensils for adornment; Rejoice in your blood, like scarlet, endowment. Ikos 5 Having seen you, the wicked tormentor of Musanius, the adamant and invincible confessors of Christ, you are judged to be beheaded by the sword, according to your knowledge, praying to the Lord in peace for the acceptance of your souls and having so valiantly ended your course, you have naturally gone to the heavenly abode, but from us on earth you hear praise sia:

Rejoice, confessors of Christ's invincibility; Rejoice, adamants of the strongest patience. Ikos 6 The light of heavenly glory shines upon your face, holy Aviv, when you self-proclaimed yourself into the hands of the tormentors who were looking for you at the command of Hegemon Licinius, and having appeared before him, you courageously confessed that you were a Christian and a confessor of the holy faith, like those who had previously suffered Guria and Samon for accept this together with their praise:

When the fire went out, your holy passion-bearing body was found, safe and sound, having received your mother with her relatives and anointed you with holy oil, burying you at the tomb of the martyrs Guria and Samon who suffered before, calling out to you, the holy confessor, here:

How to read correctly

To read the akathist to the saints, you don’t have to go to church; you can do it at home. The main thing is that the request comes from a pure heart.

When reading, you should follow simple rules:

  1. It is best to read the akathist in front of an icon of saints. If she is not in the house, it is advisable to stand by the window.
  2. Read only while standing. Only those who cannot stand for long are allowed to sit.
  3. Since the text is written in complex language, it is permissible to listen to the akathist and follow the text to make it easier to read on your own later.
  4. An akathist requires more effort than a simple prayer. If a believer doubts his abilities, he should turn to his confessor for advice and blessing.
  5. Before the akathist, you need to read the opening prayer, ending with an appeal to the guardian angel.

There are no more restrictions. A believer can also convert in his own words if it seems right to him.
