The history of the appearance of the akathist to the Pochaev Mother of God
The miraculous Pochaev Icon of the Mother of God is today kept in the Dormition Pochaev Lavra in the Ukrainian city of Pochaevo. In the middle of the 16th century, the image was presented by Metropolitan Neophytos (the future Patriarch of Constantinople) to local noblewoman Anna Goiskaya. The latter handed over the icon to the Lavra.
After Anna's death, her heir Andrzej Firlej took the miraculous image of the Blessed Virgin Mary back. The icon was returned to the Assumption Lavra only in 1644. According to legend, Firleya’s wife began to rage and was cured only when, on the advice of Abbot Job of Pochaevsky, the icon was returned.
Several miracles are associated with the image:
- The Mother of God defended the Lavra from the siege of the Turks on July 20-23, 1675. Her image appeared in the sky. The enemies got scared, started shooting, hitting each other, and eventually fled. The day when the enemy retreated (August 5) is the day of veneration of the icon.
- More than 500 miracles were recorded in the period from 1721 to 1832, when the Lavra was under the rule of the Uniates. The last miracle was the healing of the blind girl Anna, after which the monastery was returned to the Orthodox Church. In memory of this event, an akathist is read before the icon on Saturdays every week.
The icon belongs to the type of Tenderness, or Eleus. The Virgin Mary is drawn from the waist up, she holds the Child in her right hand, and in her left hand she clutches the cloth with which Christ is covered. The baby rests his left hand on his mother’s shoulder and blesses with his right hand.
The history of the appearance of this image began in the first half of the 13th century. In 1240, during the invasion of the Golden Horde, there was a dense forest on the site of the Assumption Pochaev Lavra. Two monks came here to retire from the world. They lived in a cave nearby and constantly prayed for the salvation of the country.
One day, after prayer, one of the hermits climbed to the top of the mountain. Our Lady appeared before him. She stood on a stone, and fire raged around her. The monk immediately called his friend. The shepherd John Bosoy walked nearby. Climbing the mountain, he saw a sign and fell to his knees, praying.
Soon the Mother of God disappeared, but on the stone on which she stood there remained a trace of her right foot. The trail was filled with water, which did not decrease, no matter how much water was taken from there.
The akathist also talks about this event; a stone with a footprint is often depicted on icons. The akathist itself was adopted on August 14, 1883 by the Holy Synod. It was compiled by Archpriest Andrei Khoynatsky.
Meaning in Orthodoxy
The icon of Our Lady of Pochaev is miraculous. More than 600 recorded miracles have survived, but the exact number is unknown.
Our Lady of Pochaev helps:
- To recover from a physical or mental illness. She is especially often approached about blindness or deafness - both physical and spiritual.
- Free yourself from bad tendencies or addictions.
- Protect yourself from thieves or enemies. They often turn to her if a threat looms over the entire country.
- Guide a person on the righteous path. Even hardened sinners can reform.
- Strengthen your faith, find the right path and get rid of your inner enemy.
- Get support at the beginning of a difficult task, strengthen your resolve.
- Get rid of material difficulties.
- Avoid prison for those who have been unfairly accused.
The image of the Mother of God, brought to the family, helps maintain peace and tranquility, eliminates quarrels and misunderstandings, and directs household members on the righteous path.
Priests recommend that children pray in front of the image, since the Mother of God is their protector and helps them make the right decisions.
You can read the akathist in church or on your own, always standing. An exception is made only for believers who cannot stand for long. It is important to remember that this is a more difficult moral and spiritual matter than prayer. If in doubt, you should consult your confessor in advance.
When reading for the first time, it is recommended to listen to the recording. This will help you deal with stress and highlight important ideas. It is important to focus on turning to the Mother of God, without being distracted by everyday thoughts.
Before the akathist, the intended prayer is read, after it - an appeal to the guardian angel.
How to say a prayer correctly
Help from the Pochaev Icon will come at the right moment, if a person prays correctly and asks only for bright blessings. An appeal to the Most Pure Mary must be sincere, sincere, and come from the depths of the heart of a believing Christian.
A person who prays should completely renounce everything worldly and vain. This means that you need to forget about everyday affairs and problems, avoid thoughts about your material needs and accumulated grievances. Anyone asking Our Lady for help should not think about how he looks from the outside. Only in this case will it be possible to be heard by the Mother of God and be sure to receive support from the Queen of Heaven. Having made a prayer, it is important not to forget to glorify and thank the Mother of God for her patience, compassion and truly boundless love for the entire human race.
