Which saints are responsible for what?
Initially, from the example of the lives of the saints themselves. People believed that if a certain saint was a farmer in his earthly life, then even after death he would show “class solidarity” and help the peasants. However, there was a problem. Almost all saints can be divided into four groups: martyrs for the faith, saints (holy monks), saints (holy bishops) and various kinds of holy rulers. To this we can add the apostles and equal-to-the-apostles (spreaders of Christianity), who, however, most often were either monks, bishops, or princes. This list does not cover even a small proportion of professions, and it almost does not include peasants, who for centuries made up the bulk of the population. Therefore, the relationship between the earthly life of a saint and any business began to be sought with a fair amount of imagination. For example, Jesus' disciples Luke and Cleopas turned into patrons of travelers only because they walked several kilometers with the risen Christ. But basically the problem was solved by the church calendar.
The days of the celebration of the saints inevitably coincided with the time of some agricultural work and associated economic cycles. And although nothing but the date connected the Egyptian monk Pachomius with the planting of cucumbers in the provinces of Central Russia, this factor alone was enough. “They plant cucumbers on Pakhom,” and they pray to him for the harvest. It was calendar coincidences that gave church tradition the overwhelming number of “specialized” saints. But there were two important caveats. Firstly, these were precisely folk traditions. The bishop treated them very coolly. In official liturgical books, indications that such and such a saint should be prayed for for such and such a misfortune are almost unknown (although there are several exceptions, like the prayer to the martyr Antipas for a toothache, which was included in the Trebnik). Secondly, such a folk calendar developed in its own way not only in each Orthodox country, but also in each of its regions.

How prayer books for all occasions appeared
The situation changed at the beginning of the 19th century, and the Russian Empire became the main space of change. With the growing level of literacy, even among the peasantry, the demand for simple religious literature increased, and the printing press not only satisfied this demand, but changed the “level” of folk custom. The indication that “cucumbers are planted on Pakhom”, once on the pages of the brochure, acquired a claim to seriousness and a certain degree of theological truth. Beginning in the 1830s, pamphlets such as “Which Saint to Pray in Which Need” began to flood the market for Orthodox literature in Russia. Their compilers drew information from anywhere, filling in the gaps themselves if necessary. In the 19th century, most of the prayers addressed to one or another saint were composed. This is obvious even to non-specialists: the “Church Slavonic” language of these prayers contains a huge number of errors and is nothing more than Russian simply decorated with archaisms. The difference is especially visible in comparison with canonical texts addressed to the same saints (troparia, kontakion, etc.).
For unknown reasons, state censorship, the Synod and the Russian bishops made virtually no attempts to stop the flow of liturgical remakes, with the exception of only a few of the most scandalous cases. By the beginning of the twentieth century, collections of prayers, arranged in order of needs and requirements along with calendars, turned out to be perhaps the main income source for both private and monastic publishing houses of the empire.
When religious book publishing in Russia resumed in the early 1990s, the main sources of spiritual books for a long time were exclusively publications from the 19th and early 20th centuries. A great many of them have survived, and it was on their basis that numerous private and church publishing houses formed the taste of the “new Orthodox”, that is, the millions of people who came to the church during this period.
