Akathist to Blessed Matrona of Moscow: the most powerful prayer for women

Canon structure

The canon consists of nine parts, called songs, each of which, in turn, includes:

  • irmos;
  • troparion

Irmos (from the Greek word for “connection”) is an introductory part that, depending on the number of the song, recalls various Old Testament events.

  1. The first and second songs are addressed to the time of the exodus of the Israelites from Egyptian captivity, when Mariam, the sister of the prophet Moses, turned to God with thanksgiving for the unhindered passage through the Red (Red) Sea, and the prophet himself denounced the ingratitude and murmur of the entire people when crossing the desert.
  2. The third song is the gratitude of the prophetess Anna for the birth of her long-awaited son, Samuel.
  3. The fourth is the memory of the prophecy of Habakkuk, glorifying the appearance of God.
  4. The fifth song refers to Isaiah's prophecy about the general resurrection of the dead.
  5. The sixth song is based on the example of the prayer of Jonah, who spent three days in the belly of the whale.
  6. The seventh and eighth songs reproduce the events of the Babylonian captivity of the Israelites, during which three young men who did not worship idols remained unharmed in a fiery furnace, where they were placed for professing their faith.
  7. The ninth hymn is the magnification of the Most Holy Theotokos.

Troparia (short hymns) are dedicated to the events of the New Testament. This is a series of verses glorifying Jesus Christ, the Mother of God or the saint to whom the canon is dedicated.

For example, the canon of Blessed Matrona of Moscow begins with the words of the first song:

Having passed through the water like dry land, and having escaped the evil of Egypt, the Israelite cried out: Feast upon the Savior and our GodA reference to the events of the Exodus and thanksgiving to God for delivering the Israelites from Egyptian captivity
All-Merciful God, grant us, unworthy, praise to Your saint Matrona, our fair intercessor and prayer worker before You.
You were wounded by love for Christ from the swaddling clothes of your baby, and You served Him unslothfully in your life, blessed mother.

You appeared as the chosen vessel of the Holy Spirit, for the grace of God from the holy font continued to fervently warm you until the end of your days, blessed mother

Memories of events from the childhood of Blessed Matrona of Moscow, contained in her life
Theotokos: We sing the Arkhangelsk hymn to Thee, Pure One: Rejoice, Delighted Mary, Mother of Christ God, ever praying for our racePrayer to Our Lady

All other songs in the canon are compiled in a similar way. At the end, the luminary is read - a short glorification dedicated to the blessed old lady Matrona.

Who is Blessed Matrona of Moscow

Surprisingly, it is not known for certain in what year the future saint was born. Different sources give different dates: 1881, 1883, 1885 and even 1890. Matrona was born, and as her family affectionately called her - Matryushenka, in a family of Nikonov peasants. Interesting fact: From birth, the baby was strikingly different from everyone else; the girl had a rare anomaly - anophthalmia. She was not just blind, she had no eyes at all.

However, it soon became clear that the girl was unusual not only in appearance. Deprived of physical sight, Matrona was generously gifted by the Lord with spiritual sight. The baby saw and knew what was hidden to others.

Matryushenka’s special purpose was literally visible in everything. On Wednesdays and Fridays, the newborn baby fasted, refusing her mother's breast; during her baptism, a fragrant cloud of steam rose from her font, so that Fr. Vasily said that this child would be holy. He named young Matryushenka and St. as his replacement. John of Kronstadt, when, as a teenager, she and her friend visited Kronstadt.

At the age of 17, a new test befell Matrona - she, as people say, became paralyzed. But she didn’t stop helping people. Sick, suffering people in need of advice and help came to the Nikonovs’ house constantly.

In 1925, a blind woman unable to walk was forced to move to Moscow, where she lived until her death, changing more than a dozen addresses. But no matter where she lived, people always came to Matrona. At times she received up to 40 people a day. Only prayer gave mother strength. Contemporaries recalled that Matronushka did not even sleep, but only dozed a little, leaning on her small fist.

And among those who turned to the righteous woman for help, there was not a person who would not have received it from Mother Matrona. She gave some much-needed advice, others received healing through her holy prayers, and she helped others get rid of demonic wiles.

On May 2, 1952, Matronushka ended her journey on earth. The old woman was buried, according to her will, at the Danilovsky cemetery. But even after her blessed dormition, she did not stop caring for the unfortunate people who came to her for help. Everyone who has ever turned to this amazing saint in prayer has felt her love and support. “Everyone, everyone, come to me as if I were alive,” Matronushka said before her death. and tell me about your troubles. And I will hear you and help you.”

To this day, the most incredible things happen after a sincere appeal to Matronushka. Numerous reviews of the saint’s help testify to the power of her intercession before God for people. The main thing is to turn to your mother with faith and trust in the Lord.

How is it customary to read the canons at home?

Before the first song of the canon there is an introduction:

“Through the prayers of our holy fathers, Lord Jesus Christ our God, have mercy on us. Ah min.

Glory to Thee, our God, glory to Thee.

Prayer to the Holy Spirit:

Heavenly King, Comforter, Soul of truth, Who is everywhere and fulfills everything, Treasure of good things and Giver of life, come and dwell in us, and cleanse us from all filth, and save, O Good One, souls ours.

Trisagion:

Holy God, Holy Mighty, Holy Immortal, have mercy on us. (Read three times, with the sign of the cross and bow from the waist.)

Glory to the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, now and ever and unto ages of ages. Amen.

Then the text of the canon is read.

Closing prayers:

It is worthy to eat as you truly bless Theotokos, Ever-Blessed and Most Immaculate and Mother of our God. We magnify Thee, the most honorable Cherub and the most glorious without comparison, the Seraphim, without the corruption of God the Word, the real Mother of God.

Glory to the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, now and ever and unto ages of ages. AmenLord , have mercy. (Thrice)

Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, through the prayers of Your Most Pure Mother, our most similar and God-bearing fathers and all the saints, have mercy and save us, for you are Good and Lover of Mankind. Ah min.

According to established custom, it is customary to read the canons while standing, with the exception of special cases when health conditions do not allow this. The main condition is a thoughtful and concentrated appeal to the saint.

For a conscious reading of the canon, it is useful to get acquainted with the life of the blessed Elder Matrona, as well as get an idea of the events of the history of the Old Testament and, of course, read the Gospel.

In what cases is the canon read?

In home prayer, it is customary to read akathists and canons. An akathist is a solemn glorification of a saint, so on days of fasting they are, as a rule, not read; during these periods they are replaced by canons.

For a one-time reading of an akathist or canon, it is not necessary to take a blessing from a priest, but if you regularly follow such a prayer rule, you should first discuss this decision with the priest.

Believers are often interested in whether it is better to read a canon or an akathist at home, the answer is simple - read what your soul is drawn to at the moment. You can alternate tests, allocating forty days to each . It is important that reading does not turn into an everyday ritual. You need to understand that prayer and reading the canon creates an invisible connection between the person praying and the Matrona of Moscow.

Therefore, the canon should be read thoughtfully, with pure thoughts and thoughts. It is especially important to read the canon before repenting of your unrighteous deeds or when a person has a heavy burden on his soul. Direct your thoughts to the Holy One, read with your mind and heart, then you will mishear and be rewarded!
