Who is Blessed Matrona of Moscow
Surprisingly, it is not known for certain in what year the future saint was born. Different sources give different dates: 1881, 1883, 1885 and even 1890. Matrona was born, and as her family affectionately called her - Matryushenka, in a family of Nikonov peasants. Interesting fact: From birth, the baby was strikingly different from everyone else; the girl had a rare anomaly - anophthalmia. She was not just blind, she had no eyes at all.
However, it soon became clear that the girl was unusual not only in appearance. Deprived of physical sight, Matrona was generously gifted by the Lord with spiritual sight. The baby saw and knew what was hidden to others.
Matryushenka’s special purpose was literally visible in everything. On Wednesdays and Fridays, the newborn baby fasted, refusing her mother's breast; during her baptism, a fragrant cloud of steam rose from her font, so that Fr. Vasily said that this child would be holy. He named young Matryushenka and St. as his replacement. John of Kronstadt, when, as a teenager, she and her friend visited Kronstadt.
At the age of 17, a new test befell Matrona - she, as people say, became paralyzed. But she didn’t stop helping people. Sick, suffering people in need of advice and help came to the Nikonovs’ house constantly.
In 1925, a blind woman unable to walk was forced to move to Moscow, where she lived until her death, changing more than a dozen addresses. But no matter where she lived, people always came to Matrona. At times she received up to 40 people a day. Only prayer gave mother strength. Contemporaries recalled that Matronushka did not even sleep, but only dozed a little, leaning on her small fist.
And among those who turned to the righteous woman for help, there was not a person who would not have received it from Mother Matrona. She gave some much-needed advice, others received healing through her holy prayers, and she helped others get rid of demonic wiles.
On May 2, 1952, Matronushka ended her journey on earth. The old woman was buried, according to her will, at the Danilovsky cemetery. But even after her blessed dormition, she did not stop caring for the unfortunate people who came to her for help. Everyone who has ever turned to this amazing saint in prayer has felt her love and support. “Everyone, everyone, come to me as if I were alive,” Matronushka said before her death. and tell me about your troubles. And I will hear you and help you.”
To this day, the most incredible things happen after a sincere appeal to Matronushka. Numerous reviews of the saint’s help testify to the power of her intercession before God for people. The main thing is to turn to your mother with faith and trust in the Lord.
What is an akathist and when should you read it?
Akathist is translated from Greek as “unsaddled.” Those. This is a prayer that is not read or sung while sitting. An exception is made for the sick and weakened.
The reading of the akathist begins with initial prayers, which can be found in any prayer book. All kontakia and ikos are recited in pairs. The last, 13th kontakion, is repeated three times and after it - 1 ikos and 1 kontakion - in the reverse order.
Akathist to St. blzh. Matrona of Moscow was compiled after her church glorification.
On April 20, 2000, the Holy Synod approved an akathist to Saint Matrona. Four years later she was canonized as a general church saint.
Like any other akathist, it is composed of 13 short kontakia and 12 more detailed ikos. All kontakia, except the first, end with the word “hallelujah” (Praise the Lord). In ikos the exclamation “Rejoice” is repeated many times. After this, a prayer is offered to the Matrona of Moscow and a troparion.
When they pray to the icon of the Matrona of Moscow, they immediately feel the answer
The image of Matrona is easily recognizable by her closed eyes, white scarf and raised hand.
Icons of Matrona are widespread in Orthodox churches. They are prayed for with various requests. At the same time, believers noticed that prayer to Matrona of Moscow brings relief.
It feels like a light inside. So a person knows that the saint will help him. And vice versa - a person immediately understands that his request was rejected. Then it’s worth thinking about whether he needs what he’s asking for.
How to read the prayers of St. Matronushka at home
An akathist is a prayer that can be heard both in church and at home. It would be a good idea to be blessed by a priest before starting this godly work. This will help protect yourself from the machinations of the evil one, who will certainly try to prevent you from praying. It is best to be blessed by your spiritual father or the priest to whom you most often confess. He knows your spiritual measure and will advise how and when best to do it.
It is important to understand why the akathist is read: reading should not be mechanical. Like any prayer, it must come from the heart. Therefore, when reading the akathist, you must try to get rid of everything unnecessary from your head and concentrate as much as possible. It’s good if the akathist is read in front of the Matronushka icon. Her visible image will help to discard unnecessary thoughts.
How to read the Akathist to Matrona correctly
Akathist to Matrona of Moscow - when should it be read, many Orthodox Christians ask. The Akathist to Matrona of Moscow can be read correctly at home, once or daily. There is a pious tradition in the face of great life difficulties to read it for 40 days or even a year in a row - for this spiritual feat it is better to ask for the blessing of your confessor or any priest, briefly talking about your life situation and your intention to read the akathist constantly. Visit the temple, pray during divine services, and begin the Sacraments of the Church.
Is it necessary to read the akathist for 40 days?
It is worth noting that there are no prescribed dogmas for how long to read the akathist. But forty is a significant number, and appears quite often in the Holy Scriptures. For example, this is how many days Christ fasted in the desert after his baptism in the waters of the Jordan. It was for 40 days that He was next to His disciples before His Ascension
Therefore, believers often take upon themselves the feat of such a unique home magpie - reading the akathist for exactly forty days. However, there are people who read the akathist for six months, a year, and sometimes every day for decades.
When to read an akathist
Matronushka, blessed Matrona, Saint Matrona of Moscow - all these are the names of one saint, revered by the entire Orthodox Church, beloved and dear to Orthodox Christians around the world. The saint was born in the 19th century and died in 1952. There are many witnesses to her holiness who saw Matronushka during her lifetime. And today, when the text of the akathist to Matrona of Moscow is read, the saint especially helps those praying; there is a lot of evidence even about the appearances of the blessed Matrona in dreams to pious believers.
Akathist to the Matrona of Moscow Intercession Monastery. And his heirs read it every day. The relics of Blessed Matronushka are located in the Pokrovsky Monastery (called the Intercession Gate) in Moscow and are open for veneration by believers daily, from 7:00 to 20:00. Every day many people from all over Russia come to touch this great shrine.
Holy prayer by agreement
You can read the akathist alone. But it has long been known that there is no better prayer that is said “by the whole world.” “Truly I also tell you that if two of you agree on earth about anything they ask, it will be done for them by My Father in heaven, for where two or three are gathered in My name, there I am in the midst of them.” said the Lord (Matthew 18:19-20)
This is why conciliar prayer is so powerful.
Unfortunately, it is not always possible to pray together. In this case, prayer by agreement will help out. We can say that this is a home form of conciliar prayer.
The Akathist to Matrona of Moscow can also be read by agreement. To do this, you need to agree with several people (there may be 2-3 people, or maybe much more) on what occasion and at what time you will read the akathist. And everyone gets up for prayer at the same hour.
How to order a prayer service with an akathist in a church
As mentioned above, it is conciliar prayer that is especially powerful. And sometimes in life such troubles, troubles and illnesses happen that it is simply impossible to cope alone.
To read the akathist conciliarly, in church, you must come in advance, before the Liturgy. You can find out what time it starts either in the temple itself or on its website. And order a prayer service with an akathist behind a candle box. In this case, after the Liturgy, the prayer service you ordered will be served.
But there is one “but”. You shouldn’t count on the priest to do all the work for you, and all you have to do is get what you ask for. Without your active participation, most likely, nothing will work out.
If there is such an opportunity, you can visit the Intercession Convent in Moscow, where the relics of the holy blessed old woman are located.
What are they asking for? Mother Matrona
What troubles can you come to Mother Matrona with? Almost anyone. For many, sometimes even completely unchurched people, Matronushka is their most beloved saint and they go to her for help and advice in any troubles. But most of all they pray for her intercession:
- In material and housing problems;
- Looking for your soulmate;
- In case of infertility and inability to bear a child;
- About healing in serious illnesses;
- About well-being in the family.
However, it also helps in solving other problems if prayer is offered to it with genuine faith and love.
Akathist to Saint Matrona of Moscow listen
Akathist to the Blessed Matrona is one of the most powerful petitions for healing from eye diseases. The old woman was blind during her lifetime, but this did not prevent her from seeing people, as they say, right through. People turn to her with requests for a speedy recovery, and there are recorded cases of miraculous healing.
Those who do not have the opportunity to independently pronounce the text of the akathist (for example, due to illness or blindness) can listen to it in an audio recording. The Church does not prohibit this. Below will be a video recording of the text.
Cases of miraculous help
There is so much evidence of her miraculous intervention that one could probably write a huge book. To this day, miracles happen through the prayers of Matronushka. Here are just a few of them:
In 2007, a little boy Kolya was hit by a car. The injuries were severe. The brain was especially badly damaged - it was literally covered in blood. The baby was in a coma and the doctors did not give the parents vain hopes. Then the boy’s mother rushed to Matronushka for help. I prayed to the limit of my strength. And her prayer was answered. After 3 months the baby was absolutely healthy. The doctors threw up their hands and unanimously asserted that such a result with such injuries was a real miracle.
8 years ago, a Muscovite who wished to remain anonymous was given a disappointing verdict by doctors: chronic renal failure. The woman was already in the terminal stage. A kidney transplant could have saved him, but the previous multiple blood transfusions led to the level of antibodies increasing several times. Operating on the patient was simply dangerous. The woman went to the Intercession Monastery to see her most important intercessor, Mother Matrona, and at home she read the saint’s prayers. After 2 weeks the operation was performed. Moreover, according to the doctors, the matches between the donor and the recipient were so unique that this had never happened in their practice.
Elena came to Matrona of Moscow for help in solving the housing problem. The barracks, where several families lived, fell into a very deplorable state. It was scary to live there, and the authorities postponed the issue of their resettlement year after year. The woman went to Matronushka along with her entire family as her last hope. And the incredible happened - a week after returning home, she and other residents of the emergency barracks received the keys to new apartments.
So it doesn’t matter at all where you will read the akathist. What matters more is whether you are willing to open your heart to the Lord. Do you believe Him? After all, as the blessed one herself once said: “What, Matronushka God or what? It’s not I who heal, but God!”
Matrona of Moscow hardly saw Stalin, condemned witchcraft and sometimes spoke vaguely
Matrona is unlikely to have met Stalin . There are many myths about Stalin. He was no stranger to spiritual issues, studied at the seminary, and understood religion. There is even a rumor about a special railway. It was allegedly built so that Joseph Vissarionovich could go to have conversations with the surviving Grigory Rasputin. And if so, then why shouldn’t Stalin become interested in the personality of Matrona of Moscow?
Tradition says that the meeting took place in the fall of 1941. The saint allegedly predicted victory for Stalin and said that he was the only one from the government who would not leave Moscow.
But historical documents of those years do not confirm this event in any way. It looks unlikely.
The only reason to believe in it is to rely on the text of Zinaida Zhdanova. And he, as you know, is quite controversial.
Here is what the theologian and resident of the Sretensky Monastery in Moscow, Hieromonk Job (Gumerov), says about this:
“There is a myth that I. Stalin came to the blessed old lady Matrona.
This is completely impossible to assume from what we know about the life of this wondrous servant of God.
In 1997, the hierarchy instructed me to prepare materials for the canonization of Matrona Nikonova.
I had to collect information about her bit by bit. There is nothing that could confirm Stalin's visit to her.
She was persecuted. She was ready to be arrested any day.
This situation remained until her death on May 2, 1952.
An attempt to present a cruel persecutor of the Church as a believing Christian and benefactor of the Church is dangerous and can only bring spiritual harm.
This is how the boundaries of good and evil blur.”
Job (Gumerov)

For miracles, Matrona has enough faith; she has no need to conjure. You can perform miracles in different ways. Magical - engaging in occult practices. And spiritual - turning to higher powers for help.
In the first case, a person relies on himself, in the second, on God. In some traditions this line is blurred.
In Orthodoxy there is a clear line between magic and faith.
The saint grew up in a village where sorcerers, healers, and healers actually met. Superstitions in such places are closely intertwined with Orthodoxy. Its own form of esoteric Christianity is formed.
Its adherents attend church, believe in salvation, and pray to icons. This movement is not against Orthodoxy, but Orthodoxy is against it. The Church strictly prohibits the flock from resorting to this kind of help.
But in the village consciousness these nuances are trifles. There is an icon, a prayer - that means everything is Orthodox. It is not surprising that Matrona with her abilities was called a healer and a sorceress.
Perhaps, according to Zinaida Zhdanova, she was just that. In the apocryphal life, Matron supposedly illuminated water and oils. But these stories contradict the words of Matrona herself: the saint claimed that it was not she who healed, but the Lord.
Matrona did not utter heretical statements, and the controversial passages, apparently, were metaphors. The historian Andrei Zaitsev comes to this conclusion. He devoted a lot of time to studying the life of Matrona and states:
“Zhdanova’s text contains a number of information about St. Matrona, who has nothing to do with reality"
“Holy Matrona never gave advice to get rid of “the demon by vomiting after communion”, she was not going to go in a general’s uniform “to report to the Lord of Hosts” and did not say that those who “will hold on to her heel” will be saved.
“The language, the way of communication of the blessed with people is often metaphorical and figurative. <…> “During the days of demonstrations, mother asked everyone not to go out into the street, to close windows, vents, doors - hordes of demons occupy all the space, all the air and embrace all people.”
(Perhaps Blessed Matrona, who often spoke allegorically, wanted to remind us of the need to keep the “windows of the soul” closed from the spirits of evil - this is what the holy fathers call human feelings.).”
Andrey Zaitsev
historian
Two more facts from the saint’s biography are noteworthy:
- When asked why the icon was dreaming, she warned against practicing magic and stated that there was no need to believe in dreams.
- Matrona never fulfilled unrighteous requests, but only those driven by good feelings.

Prayer
O blessed Mother Matrono, your soul is in heaven before the Throne of God, but your body is resting on earth, and with the grace given from above, you exude various miracles.
