Prayer to the Seven Youths of Ephesus: helps both children and adults against insomnia

History of origin

The Seven Youths of Ephesus are known not only in the Christian religion. They are widely known in Islam. There is a legend that they were walled up alive in a cave, but did not die, but fell asleep. And they slept there for several hundred years. The seven martyrs bore the names: Maximilian, Jamblichus, Martinian, John, Dionysius, Exacustodian and Antoninus. The martyrs lived in the third century AD. According to legend, one of them, Maximilian, was the only son of the ruler of the city of Ephesus. Six of his associates also came from worthy families of the city. They were all friends since childhood. In addition, young people were united by the Christian religion.

As legend has it, one day the city was captured by Emperor Decius and, first of all, demanded that everyone present make sacrifices to all pagan gods. All those who disagreed faced painful torture and then cruel execution. Seven young men also appeared before the emperor. They refused to betray their religion, for which they were punished. The emperor ordered all military distinctions to be torn from their clothes, but did not order them to be executed, but released them. He decided that people were still young and inexperienced, and after a while they would change their decision. But the young people did not change their minds. They left the city and hid on Mount Ohlon. All the way, and then in the cave, each of them prayed passionately and prepared to become a martyr.

Prayer for insomnia as spiritual medicine

Insomnia deprives many people of peace. Sleep disorders can be caused by nervous tension. To treat this condition, doctors most often recommend two options. This may be drug treatment, that is, taking special sleeping pills. It is also often advised to change the environment and type of activity, relax, unwind. However, there is also a spiritual medicine. This is prayer as such and prayer for insomnia.

Insomnia

According to Orthodox psychotherapist Dmitry Aleksandrovich Avdeev

“Dream is a sensitive moral barometer. It changes (worsens, improves) depending on our spiritual state.”

The main condition for “obtaining results” will be a correct understanding of Orthodox prayer. A prayer for insomnia is not a spell for sleep, not a fail-safe sleeping pill without consequences for the body. This is a request for help addressed to the Creator, the Mother of God, and the saints. Moreover, the Lord himself provides sleep for rest.

“Most often, people first seek sympathy and help from other people. And only when they don’t get what they expected, they turn to God. But suffering can be avoided only when we resort to Divine help, for only it is true. It is not enough to believe in God, you must trust Him. We receive God's help through trusting Him. The believer, devoting himself entirely to the Lord even to the point of death, feels the saving right hand of God upon himself” (Reverend Paisius the Svyatogorets, 1924-1994).

Miracle

One day the youngest of the friends was getting ready to go to the city to buy bread. He changed his clothes, exchanged his usual clothes for rags and hit the road. He came to the city and heard that local authorities had been looking for all of them for a long time to bring them to justice. Seven young men came out of their hiding place and voluntarily surrendered to the local authorities. The punishment was severe: to wall them up in the very cave where they were hiding. Their punishment was to die of hunger and thirst. But by the will of God, the young people did not die, but fell asleep, and slept for two hundred years exactly until the owner of the land on which the cave was located discovered it and opened the entrance. Then the Lord woke up the young people, they woke up and went out into the world, but they did not know that they had slept for two hundred years. Since then, those places have become holy, and the rumor about the miraculous youths has spread throughout the world.

How prayer helps

If you can’t sleep for a long time, and different thoughts come to mind, it’s better not to “wind up” yourself, but turn on the light, take a prayer book and read a few texts from a book. The most holy prayer will calm the soul, help you forget about problems, and sometimes quench the pain. While reading the prayer text, you need to think about the meaning of what is written and try not to remember your fears. Holy words addressed to God will help you find peace and fall asleep quickly.

The main thing is to sincerely believe in the Savior, live according to his commandments and not sin. God always guides his spiritual children through life. He saves them in case of trouble and shows them the way in a hopeless situation. Without faith in Christ it is impossible to find peace and understand the meaning of life. The Lord is ready to accept into His arms any person at any age.

Date and rules of service

It is interesting that this story has become known and is often remembered not only in Christianity, but also in Islam. Prayers are offered to the seven martyrs on August 4 and November 22 according to the Julian calendar. Usually prayers are read on memorial days. The prayers are very powerful. They are usually read by mothers so that children who have trouble falling asleep will finally calm down and fall asleep. It is believed that the spiritual protection of children is quite weak, so they are easily susceptible to negative intrusions. Children may cry all night and suffer from insomnia. If this happens, mothers read a prayer at the head of the babies. The prayer must be read with soul, understanding and accepting every word. You need to pray every evening. It is important to feel all the words from the heart. Then the prayer will become several times stronger also because it is uttered through the lips of the mother.

Causes of insomnia

Sleep disorder occurs due to physiological and psychological factors. The causes of insomnia may be increased night pain due to chronic diseases, as well as hormonal imbalances. Most often, people cannot sleep at night if they have diabetes or thyroid disease. Sleep problems can arise due to age-related hormonal dysfunctions (for example, due to menopause).

True, insomnia is not always a consequence of some disease. Sometimes a person cannot fall asleep due to a violation of the daytime routine. If you sleep for a long time during the day, it is difficult to fall asleep at night. Insomnia can occur due to stress, strong emotions, or depression. The quality of sleep is affected by eating late at night, watching horror movies, or doing active sports in the evening.

Listening to calm music, a cup of herbal tea or warm milk, or reading a prayer will help you fall asleep quickly. It is advisable to pray every evening before going to bed. Believers can read prayers to the Savior and the Mother of God, and also ask for help from God's holy disciples and followers of the teachings of Christ.

Prayer to the Seven Youths

Great God, praiseworthy and incomprehensible, having created man by Thy hand, dust lifted from the earth, and having honored him with Thy image, Jesus Christ, the most desired name, with Thy Beginning Father and with the Most Holy and Good One, appear on Thy servant (name), and visit his soul and body. We are begging from the glorious mistress of our Virgin, the holy heavenly forces of the non-enjoyable, and an honest glorious prophet, and all the Apostles, and the Ecumenical Teachers of Vasily the Great, Gregory the Theologian, John Zlatousty, George the Victorious, the peace of the world, Theodosius of the general life of the boss, Anthony and Theodosius , Onuphrius, Arseny, and all the reverends, saints and holy healers, holy righteous John of Kronstadt, holy blessed Xenia of Petersburg and all Your shrines. Give him restful sleep, bodily sleep for health and salvation. Give the spiritual and physical strength that visited your saint in the temple of Agrippa, and gave him a dream of consolation and resurrected him in a single moment, for the glory of Your goodness. Prayer for sleep disturbances in infants

Oh, most wonderful holy seventh generation, praise to the city of Ephesus and the hope of the whole universe! Look from the heights of heavenly glory at us, who honor your memory with love, especially at the Christian infants, entrusted to your intercession by their parents: bring down upon her the blessing of Christ God, saying: leave the children to come to Me: heal the sick in them, comfort the sorrowful; Keep their hearts pure, fill them with meekness, and in the soil of their hearts plant and strengthen the seed of the confession of God, so that they may grow to the best of their ability; and all of us, who stand before your holy icon, kissing your relics with faith and praying warmly to you, vouchsafe to enhance the Kingdom of Heaven and glorify there with silent voices of joy the magnificent name of the Most Holy Trinity, the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit forever and ever. Amen.

Communion is the medicine of Immortality

True Christians can be called people who are in grace-filled union with God. For ancient Christians, the very idea that one could be called a Christian and not receive communion seemed absurd.

“In the Holy Eucharist, believers are given the sacred “medicine of immortality,” as the Hieromartyr Ignatius the God-Bearer said, “an antidote so as not to die.” God made man a material being. This is why He uses material things like bread and wine to impart new life into us. Each time, approach the Eucharist as if you are doing it for the first time, and at the same time as if this is your last communion before death” (Reverend Porfiry Kavsokolivit, 1906-1991).

During the Sacrament of the Eucharist, the believer is given the true Body and Blood of Jesus Christ under the guise of bread and wine. Therefore, it is very important to prepare “worthily” for this Great Sacrament. Preparation is carried out by fasting, intense prayer and repentance (confession). Anyone preparing for Holy Communion should, if possible, make peace with everyone. At this time, you need to try to protect yourself from feelings of anger and irritation, and refrain from judgment and all sorts of evil thoughts and conversations. You need to spend time, as much as possible, in solitude, reading the Gospel and books of spiritual content.

“Thanks to communion, we are cleansed from all spiritual impurity and receive readiness and zeal for good: the honest blood of Christ not only delivers us from corruption, but also from all impurity hidden inside, and does not leave us to cool in negligence, but makes us hotter in spirit" (St. Cyril of Alexandria, 376-444).

Prayer for insomnia: who to contact

To whom should prayer be addressed in order to fall asleep quickly at night? In Russian Orthodoxy, a tradition has developed when deprived of sleep to pray to the saints, who became famous for their miracles in curing insomnia. Such saints are the seven youths of Ephesus and the Monk Irinarch of Rostov.

Saints can intercede with the All-Merciful Creator. By fulfilling the commandments of love for God and neighbors, they pleased the Creator with their lives. The Lord hears their prayers if what they ask does not harm the person.

“Any saint can help us in any matter. If only we pray with attention, reverence and contrition. If only we asked for a good cause, thought about “the only thing needed” and sought the Kingdom of Heaven” (priest Sergius Begiyan).

And Saint John of Kronstadt said that

“The Lord accepts the intercessions of the saints for sinful people when the sins of these latter do not exceed the measure of God’s forbearance.”

Prayer to St. Irinarch of Rostov

Oh, Reverend Father Irinarsha! Behold, we earnestly pray to you: be our ever-present intercessor, ask for us, the servants of God (names), from Christ God peace, silence, prosperity, health and salvation, and protection from all enemies, visible and invisible, and cover us with your intercession from the presence of any troubles and sorrows, especially from the temptations of the dark enemy, may we all glorify the all-holy name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, now and ever and unto ages of ages. Amen.

In the early 2000s, Moscow resident Marina got a new responsible job. Her constant experiences in a new place affected her health: she lost sleep at night. When an employee at work asked why she looked drowned, Marina admitted that she had trouble sleeping at night. She advised me to pray daily to St. Irinarch of Rostov. Prayer for insomnia helped Marina. After some time, she stopped being nervous at work and healthy sleep returned to her.
