Archpriest Sergius tried with all his might to preserve the image: his family was very large, there was always not enough money, and many wanted to acquire the miraculous image. But the priest refused; he saved the shrine for Russia. And during the period of the beginning of the revival of Orthodoxy in Russia, it returned to its destiny.
Description of the icon
Orthodox iconography has adopted several styles of painting the image of the Mother of God with the Child Jesus. The Tikhvin icon belongs to the Hodegetria type - translation from Greek Guiding.
On the Tikhvin Icon, the faces of the Most Pure Virgin and the Baby Jesus are facing each other. The Mother of God tenderly leaned towards her son, who sits on her left hand. With inexplicable tenderness and sorrow she looks at her child.
The savior's legs are crossed so that the right heel is visible. In one hand he holds a scroll, and the other is raised up to bless all the people whose sins he atoned for with the flour of the cross.
The importance of the image lies in confirming the belief about the coming into the world of the Heavenly King and Supreme Judge. The Blessed Virgin knows about the divine nature of the Son and His destiny, significance, and she indicates that He should be venerated.

The prayer of Our Lady of Tikhvin can become such a life-saving straw for very sick people, the reading of which can work real miracles.
History of the icon of the Tikhvin Mother of God
It is believed that the Tikhvin Icon was created by the Apostle Luke during the life of the Mother of God. The wonderful image was transferred to Constantinople and a temple was built for it, where it remained for several centuries.
Until the 14th century, the image of the Mother of God was in Constantinople. Suddenly, in 1383, the Sporuchnitsa disappeared from the temple. One day the clergy entered the temple and saw that the miraculous image had disappeared from its usual place.
The chronicle says that in the same year the Tikhvin Mother of God appeared to men who were fishing on Lake Ladoga.
One of the fishermen accidentally raised his head and, out of the corner of his eye, caught something strange, unprecedented. An icon floated low in the sky, illuminated by a wondrous unearthly light.
“Lord, save and have mercy!” both fishermen exhaled in unison, making the sign of the cross. And the wondrous icon swayed in the sky, as if nodded and disappeared, only to appear again several dozen miles further, near Tikhvin-town. Here a temple will be built in her honor, and later a monastic monastery will be established.
The Holy Icon in Rus'
The miraculous image left Byzantium. The Mother of God chose our country for his stay. With her miraculous coming, the icon of the Most Holy Lady brought to Russia the blessing of the holy cities of Jerusalem and Constantinople.
Before Tikhvin, in several northern regions that were not converted to Christianity, an image of the Mother of God appeared. She blessed the Russian lands for the adoption of Orthodoxy and the unification of territories.
The blessed icon soon became famous in Rus' for its great miracles. The chronicle of the Tikhvin Dormition Monastery says: “Wonderful miracles have never ceased from this image. They, like a fountain of living water, have always poured out for those who come in faith.”
For the sake of her Tikhvin icon, the Most Holy Theotokos gave quick help and consolation to all those who suffered - from the orphan and the wretched to the earthly king.
In both capitals, in many cities, monasteries, and rural parish churches, there are lists of this icon glorified by miracles. Various people, often women, turn to them with a prayer to the Tikhvin Mother of God for the health of the child.
The Tikhvin Icon is popularly called a children's icon, because for a long time people have asked for the physical and mental well-being of children in front of it. In addition, the image protects:
- from loss of housing and property;
- inactivity;
- unemployment;
- slander, hostility;
- persecution.
Thanks to this icon, many miracles happened. She defended Tikhvin from enemies who besieged the Tikhvin monastery from 1613 to 1615. Every time the desperate defenders of the city prayed to the Mother of God, she helped them drive out their enemies.
Recent history
When the Bolsheviks came to power in Russia in 1917, the persecution of believers began, and the veneration of religious shrines ceased. The Tikhvin Monastery was closed, and the icon was placed in the local historical museum.
During the Great Patriotic War they were delivered to Pskov. Divine services were held here during hostilities. In 1944, the relic was taken out of Russia, first it was delivered to Germany, and later transported to the USA.
In America, Archbishop of Riga John Garklavs was responsible for its safety. The image returned to Russia in 2004.
History of the holy image
The icon received its name from the place where it appeared. One day, above Ladoga, fishermen took out their catch. Then they saw a miraculous phenomenon - the image of the Holy Virgin Mary slowly glided over the water. The icon hung in the air, as if supported by invisible angelic hands. The image was discovered later, on the bank of the river. Tikhvinki. Tradition says that she appeared to people many times, in different villages. These were places where Christianity had not yet been established. And the icon was transferred from Constantinople.
The shrine stopped on the river, but during the time of iconoclasm the image independently moved to Rome, from where it later returned to Moscow. Since then, the icon has become a symbol of Russian statehood. It is not for nothing that the capital of Russia is called the “Third Rome” - it was supposed to preserve the fullness of Christian teaching.
Many Russian rulers offered prayers to the Tikhvin Icon of the Mother of God. Dmitry Donskoy came to the temple before the Battle of Kulikovo. The Assumption Monastery, where the image was kept, was visited by Peter I, Queen Elizabeth, and Emperor Paul. The image evoked special respect among the entire Romanov house.
Prayer is the main spiritual help for children
The Tikhvin Icon of the Mother of God is considered the patroness of infants. Mothers whose children are very sick, capricious, restless in their sleep, call on her.
You should pray to the icon:
- for infertility;
- poor relationship with a teenage child;
- family conflicts with husband/wife or adult children;
- disagreements with other relatives.
Prayers turn to the Mother of God with requests for the preservation of peace, for salvation during natural and man-made disasters.
Tikhvin Icon of the Mother of God guarding the Russian lands
During the time of Ivan IV the Terrible (16th century), a monastery was founded in Tikhvin. A special window was made in the wall of the Assumption Church. Through it, everyone could see the miraculous icon and pray in front of it at any time.
The intercession of the Most Holy Theotokos more than once saved the monastery from destruction. So, in 1613, Swedish troops captured Novgorod, and danger loomed over the monastery. The monks decided to flee, taking with them the Tikhvin image of the Mother of God. However, it turned out to be impossible to move the icon. The brethren were ashamed of their cowardice and entrusted their lives to the intercession of the Mother of God. The heavenly army, which rose to defend the monastery, put the Swedes to flight.
In 1617, in the village of Stolbovo, not far from Tikhvin, a meeting of Russian and Swedish ambassadors took place. Before this, Russian envoys from Tsar Mikhail Fedorovich served a prayer service in front of the Tikhvin Icon. They took the list of the miraculous image with them. According to the results of the Stolbovo Peace Treaty, the Novgorod lands were returned to Russia. The Swedish heir renounced his claims to the Russian throne.
How to pray correctly
Before turning to the icon, the petitioner clears his thoughts and forgives everyone whom he considered his enemies. A candle or lamp is lit in front of the image.
Nothing should distract from praying to the holy image. The text is read from the prayer book or by heart.
Now you can turn on the prayer to listen to on your laptop or phone. The Church allows this and even advises doing so. First, the sign of the cross is made and the preceding prayer “Our Father” is said.
You can also read Psalm 90.
At the end of the prayer you must cross yourself again.
