Church of Peter and Paul in Lefortovo
(Peter and Paul Church) is an Orthodox church in the Lefortovo district of Moscow. Belongs to the Peter and Paul Deanery of the Moscow City Diocese.
History of the Church of Peter and Paul
Lefortovo is an old district in the southeast of the city, where there are many interesting buildings. There is also an Orthodox monastery in memory of the apostles Peter and Paul. The uniqueness of the building lies in the architecture, which has remained virtually unchanged since its construction.
The street on which the monastery stands was renamed several times. All names are directly related to the history of the temple. Initially it was Petropavlovskaya, in the 18th century it was Lafertovskaya, and in 1922 it became Soldatskaya. You can trace the history - for whom the church was built, who supervised the construction and in whose honor it was consecrated.
Initially, there was a wooden church on this site, consecrated in honor of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker. In 1696, young Peter ordered the construction of a new monastery made of stone in place of the old one made of wood.
Lefort was put in charge of the construction process, but, unfortunately, he died 3 years later. Before his death, work proceeded quickly, but after that it stopped. Therefore, construction was completed only in 1711. In the same year, the temple was consecrated.
In 1812, the French army entered Moscow, which was half burned. Napoleon's army stationed its horses in the temple, which was not affected by the fire. After the victory over the French, the building was restored and a new consecration ceremony was held.
In 1834 there was a severe fire in Moscow, which damaged many buildings. The parish in the church was completely burned out, which was later restored almost unchanged.
Church of Peter and Paul in Lefortovo after the hurricane of 1904
The last unpleasant event for the church was a hurricane in 1904, where the crosses on the roof and part of the roof were destroyed . Everything was restored in a short time. After this, the temple functioned normally without any losses or disturbances.
During Soviet times, the monastery held services and preserved the bells, iconostasis and other interior decoration. Now there is a Sunday school at the church, services and liturgies are held, and the sacrament of baptism is performed.
Where is the temple?
Lefortovo is the oldest district of Moscow, which has seen many events in its lifetime. Lefortovo Sloboda was famous first for its palaces, then for its barracks, and finally for its prison (not a bad “evolution”, isn’t it?).
- It is in this once diverse area that the Church of Peter and Paul in Lefortovo is located, the current address of which is: Moscow, Soldatskaya Street, 4.

Architecture of the Church of Peter and Paul
The Church of Peter and Paul in Lefortovo was built in the spirit of the traditional pre-Petrine style of architecture, despite Leforto's adherence to Calvinism and Protestantism. The building is elongated horizontally from west to east. The bell tower is made in the form of a tent with through openings.
The roof is decorated with 5 beautiful domes. A departure from tradition was the use of baroque shells on the quadrangle instead of traditional kokoshniks. The same technique was used on 2 more buildings that have survived to this day - the Church of the Deposition of the Robe near the Donskoy Monastery and the Monastery of the Transfiguration on the Sands not far from Arbat. This is one of the tallest buildings - the height reaches 38 m.
The southern portal from the old wooden church still exists. There are chapels on both sides of the main building. On the right side there is a chapel in the name of John the Theologian, on the left - in honor of St. Sergius of Radonezh.
The bell tower has 8 bells, which are more than 150 years old. The main and largest bell was cast by the best foundry craftsmen in 1820. Its weight is about 5 tons.
In Russia, only a few belfries have remained unchanged since Soviet times, unaffected by the mass destruction of bells. The Church of Peter and Paul is one of these unique institutions. The monastery continued its activities under the communists without changes.
External lighting is arranged in 2 tiers. There are 3 entrances leading into the temple, above which are depicted the faces of saints: from the west – the icon of the Kazan Mother of God, in the north – the icon of the Pechersk Mother of God and in the south – the Vladimir Icon of the Mother of God. The walls of the main building and side chapels are decorated with paintings.
The territory is fenced with a stone fence with a metal lattice and is under state protection. At the end of the 20th century, a small church was erected here to hold the sacrament of baptism in honor of Archangel Michael. In 2000, a chapel with a crucifix of Jesus Christ was built.
Architecture
The height of the church is 38 m. It is a five-domed temple; in addition, one dome is located above each chapel. A special feature of the building is the ancient “tent” style bell tower. During the persecution, the removal of the bells was avoided, so that now Muscovites can hear the ringing that has called believers to service since the 18th century.
The church has three entrances, each of which is specially decorated with icons of the Mother of God. It is believed that Peter I, who mastered many crafts, including construction, personally took part in the decoration of the southern entrance.
Interior decoration of the Church of Peter and Paul
The Church of Peter and Paul, located in Lefortovo, has existed for more than 400 years. During this period, the monastery survived fires, wars, and natural disasters, but was able to preserve its original interior decoration. Inside, the temple fascinates with its splendor and luxury. The hall is divided into 3 naves using powerful marble columns. The floor is tiled with limestone.
The walls were decorated with rhodonite, marble and jasper. The famous masters I. Rossi and A. Quadri did the stucco work on the walls and columns. The walls were painted by D. Soloviev, V. Ignatiev, G. Gzel, I. Belsky, V. Yaroshevsky and M. Zakharov. A. Matveev supervised the work of the painters.
The temple inside is illuminated by 5 bronze chandeliers. Crystal and multi-colored Venetian glass were used for decoration. Of these 5 chandeliers, one has survived from the 18th century, the rest are copies made in the 20th century.
The frame of the iconostasis is made of larch up to 20 m high. D. Trezzini prepared the drawings for it. The work was carried out by masters I. Telega and T. Ivanov. The sculptures and decorative elements are made from linden. Work on the iconostasis took 4 years in the premises of the Armory Chamber.
The images in the icon cases were painted by famous icon painters F. Artemyev and M. Merkuryev. The iconostasis was delivered disassembled. Assembly was carried out directly on site.
Next to the left column is the pulpit for sermons. A separate place is provided for the royal family and the sovereign near the right column. There are 2 altars in the temple: the first stands in the main altar and is consecrated in the name of Peter and Paul, the second, consecrated in honor of the Great Martyr Catherine, is in the southwest of the building.
