Merciful Lord, You once, through the mouth of the servant of Moses, Joshua, delayed the movement of the Sun and Moon all day long, until the people of Israel took revenge on their enemies.
With the prayer of Elisha the prophet, he once struck the Syrians, delaying them, and healed them again.

You once told the prophet Isaiah: behold, I will return back ten steps the shadow of the sun, which passed along the steps of Ahaz, and the sun returned ten steps along the steps on which it descended [1].

You once, through the mouth of the prophet Ezekiel, closed the abysses, stopped the rivers, and held back the waters [2].

And You once stopped the mouths of the lions in the den with the fasting and prayer of Your prophet Daniel [3].

And now delay and slow down until the right time all the plans around those standing by me about my displacement, dismissal, removal, expulsion.

So now, destroy the evil desires and demands of all those who condemn me, block the lips and hearts of all those who slander, are angry and growl at me, and all who blaspheme and humiliate me.

So now, bring spiritual blindness into the eyes of all those who rise up against me and against my enemies.

Didn’t you tell the Apostle Paul: Speak and do not keep silent, for I am with you, and no one will harm you [4].

Soften the hearts of all those who oppose the good and dignity of the Church of Christ. Therefore, let my mouth not be silent to reprove the wicked and glorify the righteous and all your wondrous works. And may all our good undertakings and desires be fulfilled.

To you, righteous women and prayer books of God, our daring intercessors, who once with the power of their prayers restrained the invasion of foreigners, the approach of haters, who destroyed the evil plans of people, who stopped the mouths of lions, now I turn with my prayer, with my petition.

And You, the venerable great Elius of Egypt, who once fenced the place of your disciple’s settlement in a circle with the sign of the cross, commanded him to arm himself with the name of the Lord and from now on not to be afraid of demonic temptations [5]. Protect my house, in which I live, in the circle of your prayers and save it from fiery ignition, thieves’ attacks and all evil and insurance.

And you, Reverend Father Poplie of Syria, once with your unceasing prayer for ten days you kept the demon motionless and unable to walk either day or night [6]; Now, around my cell and this house (my) keep behind its fence all the opposing forces and all those who blaspheme the name of God and despise me.

And You, reverend virgin Piama, who once with the power of prayer stopped the movement of those who were going to destroy the inhabitants of the village where she lived, now stop all the plans of my enemies who want to expel me from this city and destroy me: do not allow them to approach this house, stop them with the power of prayer his: “Lord, Judge of the Universe, You, who are displeased with all unrighteousness, when this prayer comes to You, may the Holy Power stop them at the place where it befalls them” [7].

And You, blessed Lawrence of Kaluga, pray to God for me, as having the boldness to intercede before the Lord for those suffering from the wiles of the devil. Pray to God for me, may He protect me from the wiles of Satan.

And You, Reverend Vasily of Pechersk, perform your prayers of prohibition over those who attack me and drive away all the machinations of the devil from me [8].

And you, all the saints of the Russian land, with the power of your prayers for me, dispel all the demonic spells, all the devil’s plans and intrigues - to annoy me and destroy me and my property.

And You, great and formidable guardian, Archangel Michael, cut off with a fiery sword all the desires of the enemy of the human race and all his minions who want to destroy me. Stand inviolably on guard over this house, all those living in it and all its property.

And You, Lady, not in vain called the “Indestructible Wall”, be for all those who are hostile against me and plotting dirty tricks on me, truly a kind of barrier and an indestructible wall, protecting me from all evil and difficult circumstances.

Prayers recited in danger

Psalm 90

Living in the help of the Most High, he will settle in the shelter of the Heavenly God. Says the Lord: Thou art my Protector and my Refuge, my God, and I trust in Him. For He will deliver you from the snare of the trap, and from rebellious words, His splash will overshadow you, and under His wing you hope: His truth will surround you with weapons. Do not be afraid from the fear of the night, from the arrow that flies during the day, from the thing that passes in darkness, from the cloak, and from the demon of the midday. Thousands will fall from your country, and darkness will fall at your right hand, but it will not come close to you, otherwise you will look at your eyes, and you will see the reward of sinners.

For You, O Lord, are my hope, You have made the Most High your refuge. Evil will not come to you, and wound will not approach your body, as His Angel commanded you to keep you in all your ways. They will lift you up in their arms, but not when you dash your foot on a stone, step on an asp and a basilisk, and cross a lion and a serpent. For I have trusted in Me, and I will deliver, and I will cover, and because I have known My name. He will call to Me, and I will hear him: I am with him in sorrow, I will overcome him, and I will glorify him, I will fill him with long days, and I will show him My salvation.

Prayer to the Honest and Life-Giving Cross

May God rise again, and may His enemies be scattered, and may those who hate Him flee from His presence. As smoke disappears, let them disappear; as wax melts in the presence of fire, so let demons perish from the face of those who love God and signify themselves with the sign of the cross, and who say in joy: Rejoice, Most Honorable and Life-Giving Cross of the Lord, drive away the demons by force on you of our Lord Jesus Christ, who descended into hell and trampled upon the power the devil, and who gave us His Honest Cross to drive away every adversary. O Most Honest and Life-Giving Cross of the Lord! Help me with the Holy Virgin Mary and with all the saints forever. Amen.

Prayer of St. Macarius, Abba of Egypt

Lord, as You want and as You know, have mercy. But let there be tacos! Let there be tacos! Let there be tacos!

Let us sing to the Virgin Mary the universal glory that has vegetated from man and given birth to the Lord, the heavenly door, the disembodied song and the fertilizer of the faithful; This is why heaven and the temple of the Divine have appeared; Having destroyed this barrier of enmity, peace was introduced and the Kingdom was opened. This is the affirmation of faith, the Champion of the Imam of the Lord born from Her. Dare, dare, people of God, for He will conquer the enemies, for He is Omnipotent.

Heavenly armies of the Archangels, we always pray to you, unworthy, and with your prayers protect us with the shelter of the krill of your immaterial Glory, preserving us, falling diligently and crying: deliver us from troubles, like the rulers of the Highest Powers.

Archangels of God, servants of the Divine glory, guiding angels and human mentors, ask for what is useful to us, and great mercy, like the Bodiless Archangels.

We magnify you, Archangels and Angels, and all the armies, Cherubim and Seraphim, glorifying the Lord!

The Power of Detention Prayer and Its Importance

If a believer is threatened by evil forces, a prayer of detention is read - this is a known fact. The text of the prayer, with God’s help, was developed by the Venerable Elder Pansophius, one of the monks who once lived on Athos. Legend has it that Pansofius stopped the mouths of lions and performed other miracles, protecting people from all evil.

An Orthodox person has a question: who can read such a prayer? Will the Lord punish me, the believer thinks, for incorrectly reading the holy text? We will now try to answer these and other questions.

General description and purpose of the prayer of prohibition

The power of prayer lies in stopping the devil's actions and all evil. The text is distinguished by features that cast doubt on the authorship of the monk:

  • the absence of repentant and glorifying words to the Lord - instead of them, lengthy comparisons with the acts of the Old Testament prophets;
  • denouncing enemies and asking them to punish them - to bring about spiritual blindness;
  • a request for the protection of material wealth, and not for the salvation of the soul;
  • rancor instead of love.

A monk living in the mountains could not care about the expulsion from the city, also mentioned in the text, or the safety of his home and property. There is a widespread belief among people that detention is a very powerful prayer that will help in any circumstances. The text is more reminiscent of apocryphal witchcraft conspiracies, which are rejected by the Orthodox Church. Orthodox authors consider it a fake.

The prayer of detention is contrary to the Christian teaching of forgiving enemies rather than exposing and punishing them. The text is structured in such a way that the reader appears to be an absolute righteous person, and according to the Christian canon, this is pride. A person considers himself infallible and equates himself with God. Not noticing his sinfulness, he exposes other, “evil” people.

In the prayer of detention, the reader even puts himself ahead of God, considering his enemies to be the enemies of God. But his request is only to delay, and not to destroy, the evil being committed against him.

Some facts about the prayer of detention

First of all, you need to understand that the prayer “Detention” is a powerful talisman that stops the evil plans of otherworldly forces. It is enough to read the text of the prayer to understand that this is truly a serious instrument. The believer says to himself: there are not many barriers between me and the darkness, I am poorly protected from otherworldly misfortune, I can be overcome. And to detain the undead you need strong prayer.

The popularity of prayer has grown rapidly in recent years. But clergy have an ambiguous attitude towards the prayer of detention - there are adherents of this text, and there are also opponents. When wondering “will this prayer help me,” carefully study the history of the question. The power of detention prayers is time-tested. Here are some interesting facts about this prayer:

  1. Most sources date the prayer to 1848.
  2. Pansophius of Athos is a Greek elder who successfully resisted evil throughout his life.
  3. The prayer of detention is directed against the devil, but the text also stops other representatives of the dark kingdom.
  4. If you are wondering “can I protect my home” with this prayer, the answer is yes.
  5. With the prayer of detention you can protect yourself, like an unbreakable wall, from meanness, envy and evil human thoughts.

Prayer to stop all evil - is it magic or Orthodoxy?

In addition to all of the above, the aura of mystery around this prayer is alarming. It is often stated that it can only be used with the blessing of the confessor. The reader may develop a superstitious and magical perception of prayer, the impression that it has some special power and is accessible only to the initiated.

Also, the prayer of detention is usually given with an introductory note. It says that this text is strong in its secrecy and should be read unnoticed from prying ears and eyes. All this makes it similar to magical conspiracies. Archpriest Vladimir Parkhomenko points out that the prayer of detention is imbued with the spirit of sorcery:

“Such recommendations are precisely inherent in witchcraft rituals, and not in Orthodox prayer. The power of Christian prayer lies in something completely different - in humility, in the spirit of repentance, in love for God, neighbors and all those who have done us harm.”

Prayer is a humble request to the Lord and trust in Him. A magical conspiracy does not imply faith in God, but in a certain verbal formula. It is based on proud egoism and the desire for guaranteed fulfillment of desire. There is no place here for trust in the Lord and admiration for His Will. We observe similar self-will in the prayer of detention.

So, many signs classify the prayer of detention as apocryphal prayers, that is, not canonical. An Orthodox Christian should be careful with such texts. By claiming sacredness, they may contradict Orthodox dogma and understanding of genuine godly prayer. To combat visible and invisible enemies, it is better to use canonical prayers, for example, Psalm 90.

In what cases does prayer of detention help?

Many people think: darkness has swallowed the world, nothing will help me. And who do you consider yourself after such thoughts? Dejection is a mortal sin. If you are fired or poor, everything is really bad, but if dark forces have taken over you, your immortal soul is in danger. You cannot do this without a prayer of detention, since the hordes of Satan are on the threshold of your home.

The opinion that “they will feel sorry for me” is naive - the human enemy hunts for souls without holidays and weekends. So, the prayer of detention helps in several cases:

  • when it is necessary to resist supernatural forces;
  • when loved ones need protection (one’s own “I” will have to be forgotten);
  • if enemies are plotting meanness;
  • if someone has brought blindness into your eyes, and this prevents you from seeing the true ill-wisher;
  • if ordinary prayers against evil spirits did not help.
  • There is an alternative point of view, according to which the power of miraculous prayer is greatly exaggerated. You can often hear phrases from people: “I was given permission to read this prayer by my confessor” or “I know that this particular text will work.” But in Orthodoxy there are no separate prayers; all holy texts are considered equally effective. So where did such conviction in the Christian’s participation in “special sacraments” and the sacred meaning hidden in some prayers come from? No answers have been found yet.

    Rules for reading the prayer of detention

    Ask yourself: what have I done for the sake of understanding the Orthodox faith? Deep understanding leads to sincerity and increased effectiveness of any prayers. You can protect yourself when moving on public transport, at home and at work. The main thing is sincere devotion to the Lord. It’s not for me to teach you, said one wise man, but some rules are worth listening to.

    Preparing to read the prayer of detention

    As you already understand, this prayer was not published in Orthodox prayer books until the 19th century.

    And there was no talk of removal from office and protection against the authorities. Do not rush to throw around phrases like “they don’t value me, I need to seek divine protection.” First, think about whether you have done everything to realize your profession, and only then (if necessary) resort to prayer.

    Let us list the most important stages of preparation before starting to read the prayer:

    1. Consult your confessor - perhaps he will suggest alternative solutions.
    2. If the priest advises you to defend yourself with just such a prayer, ask for his blessing.
    3. Get the full text (there are prayer books for this), or even better, learn the words by heart.
    4. Make sure you don’t confuse the words (if the original says “menu” or “men”, read it that way).
    5. Get ready to read, throw away extraneous thoughts, fill your soul with light.

    Rules for reading the prayer of detention

    Elder Pansophius, discussing his prayers, noted that their strength lies in hiding them from human hearing and sight. This means that outsiders should not know about your actions. In addition, you must read the prayer text thoughtfully, deeply penetrating the meaning of what is said. This rule applies to any prayer. There are other recommendations for prayers against evil spirits that should be heeded:

    • read the text nine times (as the Athonite elder advised to do);
    • you cannot be interrupted and distracted by extraneous things;
    • When working with such powerful prayers, learn to silently move your lips without attracting unnecessary attention to yourself;
    • the total reading duration is nine days (cumulative effect);
    • You can’t get lost, but if this happens, start reading again.

    Prohibitions when using prayer of detention

    This prayer, as noted above, should be handled carefully. It is strictly forbidden to classify any texts from the prayer book as magic spells and give them a sacred meaning. Yes, you can scare away evil with prayer, but it’s not you or a cleverly composed text that does this. The Lord himself intercedes for you and takes you under his care.

    When reading a prayer it is also prohibited:

    • wish harm on other people;
    • try to punish someone;
    • pronounce words for show, demonstratively;
    • look for pagan meanings in the text.

    Text of the detention prayer

    Well, we have smoothly approached the main thing - the text that we have been talking about all this time. Please note that the prayer is complex and you need to practice saying it. Any errors should be eliminated. Be careful.

    Merciful Lord, You once, through the mouth of the servant of Moses, Joshua, delayed the movement of the Sun and Moon all day long, until the people of Israel took revenge on their enemies. Now you have a powerful tool for protection against otherworldly forces. Use this tool carefully, and do not be afraid to ask for a blessing from the priest. May the Lord protect you from trouble!

    And by tradition, we bring to your attention the opinion of Father Dmitry Smirnov about the prayer of detention and about the attitude towards prayers in general. Enjoy watching:

    PRAYER FOR THE DETENTION OF ELDER PANSOPHIOS OF ATHONS. ESSENCE OF PRAYER

    A modern person can be surrounded by troubles, dangers, enemy intrigues, and bad gossip at every step.

    The prayer of Elder Pansophius of Athos, written in ancient times, can become a reliable shield from the machinations of enemies. She has great power against ill-wishers, resists any atrocities and manifestations of negativity.

    For people who are not churchgoers, the earthly world is full of mysticism. When they come to the temple, they assume that there is both faith and magic. But the Church initially did not recognize witchcraft and sorcery - and these interventions in human souls are included in the list of mortal sins.

    Some people who previously believed in God began to deny Him. It is easier for them to believe in Satan and the devil; they believe that black magic, and not the Almighty Christ, can help with any problems. Of course, prayer does not help instantly, not at the “snap of a finger.” She is not a lifeline or a ritual. Prayer is help and support from Heaven, and a person who sincerely believes in Christ can do the rest himself.

    Attention! Detention prayer is considered scary and dangerous and violates some of the Bible rules. Therefore, one should resort to reading it only in the most extreme cases.

    The text should be read in the following cases:

    • During a serious illness, there is no stronger prayer. You can pray both for yourself and for a sick relative or close friend.
    • If it is known that a curse has been imposed on the family line, which is accompanied by frequent deaths, illnesses, scandals, and divorces.
    • If you can’t find your soul mate and find family happiness, relationships with the opposite sex don’t work out—perhaps a woman (man) has been crowned with celibacy. This action is actively used by black magicians.
    • If there are drummers and other otherworldly forces in the house, or incomprehensible sounds are heard - there is no equivalent to a petition for detention, the elder will save health, nerves and life.
    • In the absence of finances, even if the family has no money for bread, after prayerful work those in need soon find a good job, get out of the debt hole and live with dignity.
    • To protect against the evil eye, cunning thoughts and meanness from others.

    Before starting prayer, you should think about: is it necessary to read this text or can you do without it? This prayer can radically change the life of a praying person.

    It is important that the person reading the prayer of detention be baptized in the Orthodox faith. A prayer book who is far from Orthodoxy is prohibited from reading it. In addition, he does not have a guardian angel, which is given to everyone who is baptized during the celebration of the Sacrament. And in prayer it is meant to address him.

    What is the prayer about?

    The first part of the prayer is an appeal to God and glorification of his power. Here the good deeds of the Lord are mentioned and the hope is expressed that he will not ignore the prayer.

    Next, they pray to God for protection from evil people, from troubles at work, from problems in life.

    This is followed by appeals to various gods revered in Christianity.

    Elias of Egypt, who saved his disciple in the name of the Lord from the temptations of the demon, is asked to protect the one praying from the penetration of the demon into his home.

    Poplius of Syria is prayed to shut the mouths of all slanderers, gossips and blasphemers.

    Lawrence of Kaluga is expected to pray to God for protection from the devil.

    The prayer commands the formidable Archangel Michael to remain formidable with the enemies of God and believers, to stop the enemy’s evil intentions.

    The prayer also mentions the “Unbreakable Wall” icon, which is prayed to protect a person from evil, no matter how it manifests itself.
