John the Theologian

John was born into a wealthy family of Salome and Zebedee, engaged in fishing. In his youth, he helped his father, then Christ called him to become a disciple. Since then, John devoted his life to serving God and spreading Christianity.

When many of Christ's disciples were dismayed after Christ's arrest, only John alone accompanied him to his execution and witnessed the crucifixion with the other women Solome and the Mother of God. It was John who Christ entrusted with the care of his mother, and he fulfilled the request and was with her until her death.

After the resurrection of Christ he became one of the apostles. The personality of the Savior became an example for John, and he devoted his life to serving the Lord until his last days.

The saint carried the words of God in his sermons with love, which he considered the main commandment. Therefore, John the Theologian was called the messenger of love, and Christ called John “the son of thunder” for his emotional character.

John was an observant and receptive person, had compassion for people's grief and never refused help, forgave offenders and prayed for their salvation. He cast out demons and healed the sick.

The miracles that happened to John the Theologian forced people to believe in his holiness. During the reign of Emperor Nero and mass persecution of Orthodox people, John was arrested and sentenced to death. He drank the poison and remained alive; it was not possible to cook it in boiling oil. Then he was exiled to the island of Patmos in Greece, where he converted many people to the Orthodox faith.

He remained alive when he was sent on a ship as a preacher to Asia Minor. The ship was holed during a storm and sank. John disappeared, but did not die. God gave him life. For fourteen days he was in sea waters. His body was discovered by the disciple Prochorus while walking along the shore to Ephesus.

He was beaten, stoned and declared a slave. But he, like a phoenix, a symbol of immortal inspiration, rose from the ashes and shone with great love.

It is well known that he lived for more than a hundred years. This is the only apostle who died a natural death. Before the premonition of his imminent death, John asked his followers to be buried alive. When the burial site was later discovered, there were no bodies or remains, only the place began to emit a subtle and delicate aroma. When the end of the world comes, John the Theologian will appear on earth in the flesh with sermons. After all, his body disappeared after the funeral on the third day, and his remains were never found.

A prayer to John the Theologian, which will give you God’s blessing and completely change your life.

Among the twelve apostles, Saint John the Theologian enjoys special honor and respect. Prayer in front of the icon of this saint can give you God's blessing and completely change your life.

Life path of the Apostle John

Saint John is primarily known for his writings, which are included in the text of the New Testament. John's life was closely connected with all the deeds of Christ: the saint witnessed many miracles, and throughout his journey he recorded all the events and conversations with his Teacher.

John is the only one of the 12 apostles who died a natural death. The death sentence did not spare the saint, but the Lord preserved the life and health of John, allowing him to live a long life in prayer. At the beginning of the persecution of Christians in Rome, John was one of the first to be condemned to death.

However, neither the cup of poison nor the hot oil brought harm to the apostle, and the miracle that occurred during the execution converted a huge number of Romans to the Christian faith. The board sent John to the island of Patmos: there the apostle continued to preach Christianity and converted many people to the faith during his long life.

Where is the icon of St. John

One of the oldest images of the saint is in the Church of St. John the Evangelist in Moscow. Copies of it can be found in almost any church: the Apostle John is highly valued by Orthodox Christians as the compiler of the Gospel and the patron saint of all students.

Perhaps the most famous image of the Apostle John is the Last Supper icon. On it the youngest apostle is depicted leaning into the hand of the Savior. This image proves that of all the disciples John was the most beloved. In addition, it was this saint who Christ commanded to take care of the Mother of God, which shows the Savior’s special trust in young John.

On icons dedicated exclusively to the Apostle John, the saint is most often depicted as a very young man. This image indicates the invaluable knowledge belonging to the apostle: John is depicted writing down the Word of God.

Less often you can find icons of the saint, in which John is depicted at the end of his life: a gray-bearded old man receives the blessing of the Lord and points people to a scroll with a prophecy about the Apocalypse.

Ikos 4

Hanging on the Cross, nailed for our sins, the Savior of the world and seeing you and His Mother coming, He gave your son away to the Most Blessed Virgin Mary, saying to Her: “Woman, behold Your son,” and again to you: “Behold your Mother.”
We, marveling at the love of Christ manifested in you, sing to the mother: Rejoice, son of God, honored to be the Mother; Rejoice, for this reason especially to Christ, as if by some kind of spiritual kinship, you have been assigned.

Rejoice, thou who has served the Mother of God worthily; Rejoice, O you who, like your mother, have had all honor with you.

Rejoice, and in the Assumption you conducted Her honorable and holy body to the grave; Rejoice, with the shining branch of paradise brought by the Archangel Gabriel, who preceded Her to her bed.

Rejoice, John the Apostle, confidant of Christ and the Theologian.

Apostle, evangelist and beloved disciple of Christ

John the Theologian was Christ's favorite disciple. His character was kind and his spirit was humble. He was destined for a long life of a hundred years, and during this time he performed many miracles, preaching the word of God throughout Asia Minor and Greece.

He left behind one of the most controversial books in church literature - the Apocalypse, a unified interpretation of which has not yet been given. His works: the Gospel and the three Epistles are significant monuments of Christian literature, and the church reveres him as the greatest saint.

Brief life of John the Theologian

John, the future ascetic and saint, was born into the family of the fisherman Zebedee. Together with his brother Jacob, he was sitting in a boat, mending nets, when Christ turned to him from the shore and called him to serve. Of the twelve disciples, John was the youngest, but together with his brother and the Apostle Peter he was one of those especially close to Christ. It was to him that the Lord turned from the Cross, asking him to take care of the Mother of God.

After the Dormition of the Most Holy Theotokos, the Apostle John went on his missionary work to Ephesus, a city in Asia Minor. The Gospel preserves the texts of his three Epistles, the first of which is addressed to all believers of the churches of Asia Minor. John's preaching was accompanied by various miracles: many pagans then believed in Christ and were baptized.

An interesting episode is connected with the death of the holy ascetic. When it was revealed to him that his days were numbered, he asked his disciples to dig a grave for him, lower him into it and cover it with earth. Much astonished, the disciples fulfilled the request, but, returning a little later and digging up the grave, they did not find anyone in it.

Life of a Saint

In the 4th century, the Roman Emperor Julian the Apostate reigned. He pursued a constant policy of persecution of Christians, destroying them and trying to turn them away from the faith. John the Warrior, who in fact was a Christian with deep faith and convictions, served in his army. Therefore, when he, along with everyone else, was sent to kill and persecute Christians, he provided the latter with all possible assistance. John warned about attacks and gave them the opportunity to hide. He freed his fellow believers from prison and hid them. When there was no such opportunity, he helped them with food and tried to soften their fate. But this generous warrior helped not only Christians, but also all those who were suffering, sick and in need of support.

By such behavior he made it clear to the pagans how kind, merciful Christians are and how they love all people. Thus, many people converted to Christianity, despite the fact that they were thereby subjected to persecution and torture.

But, of course, such actions of his did not go unnoticed, and they were reported to Julian the Apostate. The emperor immediately ordered John the Warrior to be thrown into prison. And his fate would have been sealed, but, by the will of God, Julian was killed in the war with the Persians, after which the Saint was released from prison.

John the Warrior devoted the rest of his life to serving people, living strictly according to God’s Commandments, in holiness. He died at a very advanced age, and at first the place of his burial was not known.

But one day, after some time, he appeared in a vision to a pious woman who was able to point to his grave. The incorrupt relics of the Saint were transferred to Constantinople. For loyalty and service to people, God gave the relics the power of grace, healing the sick and helping in everyday affairs. Since then, people have constantly come to the Church of the Apostle John the Theologian, venerate the relics and find help and support, each according to their faith.

Revelation of John

The predictions of John the Theologian are set out in revelations called the Apocalypse. He points in the work to the second appearance of Christ, which will occur with catastrophes, volcanic eruptions and fire from heaven, the appearance of angels and the resurrection of the dead. This event is associated with the end of the universe. The book contains apocalyptic horsemen, the Whore of Babylon and the number of the beast - 666, which has been repeatedly tried to decipher. On the renewed earth, the Lord will be next to people.
