The funeral of the deceased in church is not a condition for the salvation of the soul and bliss in eternal life. It does not guarantee entry into heaven, does not mean forgiveness of sins, and is not a church sacrament. But such a procedure is a tribute to an Orthodox Christian; it cannot be neglected, regardless of the personal attitude of the relatives of the deceased to the church and priests.
Memorial service: helping a living soul.
Death is the natural end of life's journey. Orthodox people believe that after a loved one leaves for another world, his soul does not die, but goes through a rather difficult path in order to ultimately appear before the Lord. These trials, or “ordeals,” are a heavy burden for the sinful soul of the deceased. The moment will come when a decision will be made where the soul will remain until the Last Judgment. Sincere prayers for repose are the greatest help to the deceased and consolation for the family. The church pays special attention to the memorial service, which believers usually order on the day of death, on the 3rd, 9th and 40th day, year, name day, birthday and death day. At the service, the close circle of the deceased asks the Lord to forgive him the sins he committed on earth and to grant him eternal life. Thanks to memorial services, the soul of the deceased calms down and becomes closer to God.
How can I order a memorial service?
You can order a memorial service in any church, the main thing is that it is open at that time. This service is inexpensive, but prices vary in each individual church. To perform funeral services, you need to submit a note and ask the candle maker at what time the ritual of remembrance of the deceased will be held. It is advisable to personally attend joint prayer in church in order to benefit both yourself and the soul of the deceased. In addition to daily prayers, it is important to be merciful and help those in need. The more good deeds are done, the lighter the burden of sins that makes the tossing soul so heavy will become.
To whom and when is a memorial service ordered?
In addition to generally accepted dates, a memorial service is performed on any other day. The exception is the period from Christmas to Epiphany. Memorial services are not held in the first days of Lent, as well as in the interval between the Saturday before Palm Sunday and the 9th day after Easter. The church calendar contains days of special remembrance of the dead:
- Trinity Parents' Saturday;
- Meat Saturday;
- 2,3,4 Saturdays of the weeks of Holy Pentecost;
- day of Radonitsa;
- Dimitrievskaya parent's Saturday;
- May 9, day of remembrance for those killed during the Great Patriotic War.
You can always approach the priest and ask him about a memorial service in the church. If on any day it is not possible to hold a memorial service for the deceased, the priest will serve a litiya - a shorter, but equally important prayer for the safe transition of the soul of the deceased to another world. It is best to come to the church before the service and submit a note about the deceased Christian so that his name will be mentioned at the Divine Liturgy at the altar. You can make a note about the special day in the note, and the priest will pray several times for the soul of the deceased during the liturgy.
How Christians are buried
Before the procedure, you should go to the temple and negotiate with the priest. When placing an order, relatives of the deceased must provide the church with a death certificate and a certificate of embalming from the morgue. In the shop at the church you can find out in advance how long the funeral service for the Orthodox dead lasts in order to agree on organizing a funeral in the cemetery.
The funeral service for the deceased (deceased) in the church takes place on the third day. During the procedure, the body of the deceased must be in a coffin. Before being brought into the temple, the deceased must be fully prepared: there must be a crown on his forehead, a cross on his chest, and the body of the deceased must be covered with a funeral veil.
After the coffin with the body of the deceased is brought into the temple, it is installed in such a way that the face of the deceased is directed towards the altar. 4 wax candles are placed around the perimeter of the coffin. Schematically they resemble a cross. During the procedure, relatives and friends of the deceased should stand nearby. It is better to buy candles from a church store and keep them lit. When a special rite is read, it is also worth praying with the priest.
What is needed for a funeral service
Before the procedure, relatives or friends of the deceased must purchase:
- a pectoral cross, if the deceased did not wear one;
- icon of the Savior;
- a piece of paper with a prayer of permission (sold in the church shop of any temple);
- funeral veil;
- funeral aureole;
- candles.
All these items (except candles) are placed in the coffin along with the deceased.
How and when does a church funeral service take place for an Orthodox deceased?
The deceased is buried on the third day after death, unless there are any obstacles to this. It was on the third day after death on the cross that the Resurrection of Christ took place. Also, some saints, for example Simeon of Thessalonica, wrote that the third day symbolizes the Orthodox faith in the Holy Trinity, their desire for the three Christian virtues (faith, hope and love), and also because a person manifests himself in deeds , words and thoughts. Those. Three is a sacred number in Orthodoxy, meaning good news.
How is the funeral service performed for a deceased person?
During the procedure, the clergyman performs a special ceremony over the coffin with the body. This rite, in a simplified manner, includes the singing of the stichera and canon and the reading of the Apostle and the Gospel.
If the deceased relative was not baptized
A person who was not baptized during his lifetime voluntarily renounced God and the church. Under no circumstances should you submit notes for him or order memorial services in the church. This rule also applies to those who died by taking their own lives without permission. Suicide in Orthodoxy is considered a grave sin. Some relatives, trying to somehow alleviate the fate of the soul of an unbaptized deceased or a suicide, mislead the clergy by indicating the name of the deceased in memorial notes. Such “help” will harm not only the soul of the deceased, but also his “intercessors”: funeral services in this case are a great sin.
The Church does not prohibit lighting candles for the unbaptized dead in church, going to the cemetery, or praying for them at home. In memory of the deceased, you can distribute his things to the disadvantaged and needy, give alms, and do good deeds. Such help, like sincere prayer, will help calm a tossing soul.
And then she began to light candles for the homewrecker on the eve! That is, for her repose, write her in notes “about her repose” and wait for her to finally die!
Hold it in both hands, live! Apparently she has a strong prayer book, you can’t overcome it! Both nod their heads in agreement.
This is a real conversation between two middle-aged women in a church, and in the conversation - one of the wildest superstitions near the church - lighting candles on the eve for living people.
And such grandmothers are also sure that passing a candle with your left hand is a terrible sin, rearranging other people’s candles on a candlestick is moving someone else’s destiny.
And if at a wedding a candle falls or goes out, or at an unction, then that’s it - immediately cover yourself with a sheet and crawl to the cemetery!
If your candle cracks, then you are damaged! It is a sin to scorch the lower end of the candle for stability on the candlestick. And so on and so forth.
In a surprising way, these harmful nonsense seep into the church environment and take root in it. But superstition is faith in vain, a useless and empty faith in nothing.
But the candle in the temple is precisely a symbol of our fervent prayer, standing before the Lord. Therefore, usually believers, when they light candles, pray for loved ones and for themselves.
It doesn’t matter at all whether your candle costs 50 rubles or 10; your participation and your sincerity are much more important here.
There is no point in scolding church authorities for paying ten rubles for a candle. The church itself buys these candles. However, in some churches they are simply freely available, and donating for them is your own business.
Indeed, in Russia candles are placed for the dead and the living in different places. For the dead on the so-called “eve table.” It is easy to recognize: it is not round, but square, above it is a cross with the crucified Christ. And for the living on all other candlesticks (round). If you mix everything up, no one will ever suffer from it: with God everyone is alive. Therefore, in many countries in Orthodox churches, candles for both the living and the dead are placed on one candlestick.
It doesn’t matter whether you place it (pass it) with your right hand or with your left. The candle itself is usually lit from a burning candle already standing on the candlestick. You pass on a candle if there are people in the church and it is impossible to approach the icon you need. But remember that all these actions during the service greatly distract people from prayer. Therefore, it is better to wait until the end of the service or light a candle to the icon that you can approach yourself.
And never listen to those who try to tell you about the left hand or other “candle” superstitions. Your candle is your personal small sacrifice, your personal prayer.
I know that there is no person who would light a candle for their loved ones and not feel at least a little joy.
And joy is the result of prayer.
What else can you add? Our famous, wonderful elder Pavel (Gruzdev) said that he always lit candles for those deceased for whom there was no one to pray for.
He did this for many years, and then a serious illness occurred, the priest was between life and death. And in this state, he suddenly saw many people praying for him and asking for him, and Father Pavel, coming to his senses, realized that these were exactly those for whom he had been praying and lighting candles all these years.
So not a single sacrifice of ours, not a single prayer will go in vain. The main thing is that we have faith, not superstition.
I agree that this is how the soul is sold or lost. It has become a popular action. Even mothers forgotten by their children light a candle for the repose: “so that he gets into trouble and remembers me.” Creepy, as Ellochka the Ogre would say, DARKNESS! “More recently, we considered questions about how to properly place candles in churches. After all, many people have different goals. Some people need to remember those who have passed on, while others want to do something good for their living loved ones... However, this topic has affected many of our readers. And the editors received many letters. Most of them, to my surprise, are that many people, trying to harm someone, deliberately light a funeral candle for a living person! And they even ask me what is the best and safest way to do this in order to avoid negative consequences... Olga from the Primorsky Territory wrote: “Recently I accidentally witnessed a conversation between two people about how one person, wanting to take revenge on the offender, decided to light a candle in the church for his repose souls... But this is a great sin. Are there any signs or superstitions about this?” - Olga asks. Similar questions concern Svetlana K. from the Chita region, Valery and Polina Ch. from Vladivostok, Mila L. from St. Petersburg. V. Grensberg from Cologne, Germany, in particular, clarifies: “What could happen to such a person who deliberately lit a funeral candle for a living soul?” This has probably happened before, when people, unable to cope with their own emotions, decided to do similar things. But such actions became more frequent in the nineties. One priest I know even once said that now they have introduced a rule about presenting a Death Certificate in order to accept an order for a funeral service, otherwise people have often begun to order such rituals for the living. They say they have completely lost their conscience, they don’t even remember it in church. Some sell their immortal soul to the devil for thirty pieces of silver, while others, look, are ready to give it away for free!.. I think that these words of the priest contain all the answers to the questions of readers interested in this topic. For a long time, in Orthodox churches there was not a particularly clear distinction between which icon a person should put a candle for health, and next to which - for repose... For there has always been an unspoken rule that a person comes to church with pure intentions and an open soul. Even a sinner. If you have crossed the threshold of the temple, it means that you have repented from the bottom of your heart and are ready to confess. Only this way, not otherwise. Wherever the soul is drawn, to which image, put a candle to that, you can’t go wrong... However, times have changed, and it has even become “popular” to light a candle for the repose of a well-to-do person, often an offender, and often one of whom there is envy, evil feelings, a desire to harm... But, as my wise grandmother said: “Remember, my granddaughter, everything that you do secretly from others, you do in front of God!..” This will be stronger than any argument that people can hide behind , violating God's laws directly in the temple of God! What happens at the moment when a person decides to light a funeral candle for a living soul and place it directly in front of the icon of the crucifixion? And the following happens. Thus, a person himself, voluntarily, without any conditions or incentives, gives a part of his soul to the Devil as a gift. Knowledgeable people claim that three such cases are enough for your immortal soul to forever come under the influence of the devil’s hand, and never again leave this black captivity. And the person who committed such an atrocity (lighting a candle for the repose of a living soul!) may not even have a clue about what happened, what ordeals he himself, with his own hands, doomed his soul to... In many European countries, including Russia, it was believed that that such people who wanted to do something similar in the temple, for what they did, turned into “black servants” of Satan, in order to then commit all sorts of unseemly acts under his tireless influence. They were assigned the role of the lowest executors of the devil's power. And they knew neither peace nor freedom.”
How does a candle for the repose of a living person work?
Let's start with the fact that each person has his own energy field, and it also performs a protective function against the invasion of foreign energy. For example, a magician needs to cast a love spell or other magical influence on a person. Casting a love spell directly without preparing the “ground” is not always productive. Why? A magical effect directed at a person has a certain force (mass), and part of this mass will be used to break through the energy field of the victim. And the “remainder” of the love spell will be used to root the effect itself and to manifest the effect. Either it happens that the impact cannot get into the victim’s field in any way, is not able to penetrate it, or it takes a very long time and is tedious to penetrate it. Therefore, the magician often acts more rationally - first he breaks through the victim’s field, and then directs his magical influence on the person, for example, a love spell. As a result, the love spell is guaranteed to fall into the victim’s field and manifest its effect, plus the whole mass of magical influence will perform its function (take root and bewitch) without the cost of breaking through the field. (It’s written rather roughly, but it conveys the essence.) So, in order to break through the victim’s field for subsequent magical influence on it, masters often use this method - they light a candle for the repose of a living person, the object of influence. It is also important to understand that when performing this action there are subtleties and nuances, and this is not just a fact - lighting a candle for the repose of a living person.
How is a candle used for the repose of a living person by people who do not know the mechanisms of its action? Consequences.
It is precisely these people who use a memorial candle for a living person with the goal of killing or, at a minimum, harming a person (victim). I consider this opinion to be erroneous and based on a common but incorrect misconception, and for this mistake such aggressors and ill-wishers very often suffer themselves. A candle for the repose of a living person can be used by a master when spoiling death as an additional action, organically included in the ritual and being only part of it, but not as the main and only action. In order to do damage to death only in this way, using a funeral candle is essentially pointless - the percentage of mortality from this influence is too small, and you will not even be achieving the desired effect for months, but for years! And to “mischief”, “revenge”, “punish”, using this method is irrational. In simple terms, it’s like taking out a loan at 300% per annum; it will cost you more. I’ll explain why now.
For the dead, candles are placed for repose in the church in a special place - opposite the cross, near the crucifix. The cross, as a reflection of death in torment, in this case is the connecting link between the world of the living and the dead. This mechanism exists to transfer energy from living to dead, to give it. A candle is immediately placed at the cross for the repose of a living person, thereby recognizing him as dead. The mechanism in this case is used incorrectly and illegally - the energy is transferred to the living instead of the dead. The victim, the recipient of such influence, receives an energy message composed of the personal energy of the aggressor, saturated with the wish for death, hatred and malice, supported by a small sacrifice (a candle is a small sacrifice). As a result, the victim is hit by his energy field. Further options for the development of events are possible.
1. The impact did not penetrate the victim's field. In this case, it will return back to the person who sent it. In magic this is called “rollback”. With such a rollback, one’s own energy field will in no way protect the aggressor from this blow - it protects from foreign energy, but immediately its own energy field returns! In this case, the slap intended for his neighbor will be received by the aggressor himself in full and exactly what he wanted for the victim. This is the most common situation for those who are not even new to magic, but simply decided to dig a hole for someone else. Moreover, even a master performing such an action may not always immediately penetrate a person’s field, but he is protected; a reasonable master always thinks about magical protection, otherwise he is a short-lived master.
2. The impact penetrated the victim's field. And in this case, the aggressor will not get the result he expects. He wants to kill, hates, is angry with the victim. But a candle is too small a sacrifice, it’s like a needle - it will prick, but not kill. Yes, the victim may feel tired or weak, and may even get a little sick. A strong blow (reinforced by accumulated personal strength or special additional methods) can distort a person’s life, but killing is a very low probability. In addition, there will be unpleasant moments for the aggressor in this situation. Suppose that the topic of our discussion is not a candle for the repose of a living person, but a ball thrown by a child into the glass. The first point is the outcome when the ball bounced off the glass; second point – the ball broke through the glass. Is the child safe? Not at all - glass shards fly in different directions. And in the case of a magical blow with the help of a funeral candle, most often they fly towards the one who sent this blow.
3. The impact penetrated the victim’s field, the victim suffered and decided to “clean up.” By the way, removing such negativity is very easy - standard village magic is enough, which even beginners are capable of by and large. For example, a simple rolling out of a testicle is enough to remove such simple negativity from yourself or someone else. The victim will cleanse himself and live his own life, but what will happen to the aggressor in this situation? He gets his well-deserved kickback. Moreover, if he regularly lit funeral candles for this person, that is, threw needle after needle at him, then the return blow will return the whole bag of needles to him at once! He could wish for death, failure, loss, ruin and other things, and all these wishes here return to him, but not gradually, but all at once. And they will hit him exactly where he wanted his victim to be hit. Plus, he will also receive the traditional “bonus” - the reverse blow is returned multiplied by the strength of the master who removes this impact. That is, the stronger the master, the more noticeable the “bonus”. The return hits the most “painfully” in cases where not only was a candle lit for the repose of a living person, but this magical influence was enhanced by special reading, a conspiracy or a spell calling on creatures (for example, spirits of death, a church demon, etc.).
There are other features of the backlash from the impact when a candle is lit for the repose of a living person. I’m not too lazy to describe all this, because I know first-hand how many people suffer from being led by their rage. I am writing all this with the goal not to scare, but to give a person the opportunity to consciously take one or another step in his life. So, one of the features is that the situation itself is actually this: one person asks the Christian egregor for death to another person. By doing this he strains his karma. The person asking will be given situations equivalent to what he asks for the other. For example, he experiences sudden financial losses, and if he goes through this situation and finds the right solution to it, then only after that such a situation will be given to his victim. Force can also push the aggressor and his victim together in life - they are given the opportunity to resolve their karmic knot and learn their life lessons. And a candle for the repose of a living person is a tightening of this karmic knot. As a result, life situations between the aggressor and the victim become more and more complicated. The victim most often begins to treat the aggressor more aggressively - it is she who subconsciously defends herself from his energy attacks. Or another option is possible - suddenly the victim “sees the light”, admits his guilt (if there was any), asks for forgiveness, explains the reasons for his behavior, and so on. The aggressor loses the basis of his aggression, he forgives or sympathizes, and... receives the “slope” of his work, that is, cones again fall on his head.
Signs that a candle has been lit for your repose.
Sometimes people suspect or want to make sure that funeral candles are lit for them or their loved ones in church. It must be said that a candle for the repose of a living person operates only within the framework of a Christian egregor, that is, such a negative can only be done to a Christian, Jehovah's Witness, Pentecostal and others. For others, it either has no effect at all or is extremely unproductive. But if we talk about the signs of this magical influence, then I would highlight the most obvious of them:
1. Victims often have nightmares or dreams with church paraphernalia. For example, in a dream he sees a black dog standing at the gate of a church, melted wax, a crucifix with burning candles, etc. Such dreams are most often in dark colors or black and white, leaving behind unpleasant, wary sensations.
2. Near such a person, candles most often crackle and smoke black, sometimes even go out. This is the reaction of candles to the dead. And since the impact was made in the church, the church “gives out” this impact. That is, in the church there will be such a reaction of candles to the presence of a victim of this influence, moreover, more often the candles are near the icons, and the fire of the candle near the crucifix, on the contrary, will flare up brighter. Also, in church, a person may feel unwell from the smell of incense, although before that he did not have any special reactions to this smell.
2. Characteristic of the physical condition is increased pressure, hot flashes to the head and chest (not to the cheeks or ears, but to the head and/or chest), slight pallor. Paleness can be well expressed, but this is in cases where the spirits of death have come to grips with the person.
What should I do if they light candles for my repose?
You can do simple magical cleaning with a simple egg roll. It is also rational to think about establishing magical protection against similar or any other magical influences.
Memorial service on day 9
After the death of a person, his soul needs help and protection. The nine angelic ranks become a kind of guide for her. They are also protectors when the soul comes before God. On the ninth day, the laity attend services and pray fervently to help the departed, remembering their sins and asking the Almighty to forgive them. In the church, relatives order magpie, and do not do without funeral services. If you manage to get to the monastery, you can order a psalter there. Reading the seventeenth kathisma of the psalter at home and visiting the temple during the service are encouraged.
What happens if you perform a funeral service for a living person in an Orthodox Church?
There are many superstitions associated with memorial services and funerals of living people. In a magical context, this should cause illness or even death of the inveterate, but the Church denies this. The Great Treasurer of St. Peter the Mogila directly states that such shamanic rituals cannot harm an Orthodox Christian (“if he is sinless”).
Any funeral prayers are read for the dead and have meaning only for them. They will not affect the living. Prayer is not a spell or a conspiracy. Both the memorial service and the special rite are offered to the Lord and the Saints, who cannot be controlled to suit one’s petty interests.
God is not a killer. He does not kill or punish in any way even a ten-times inveterate person, but the organizer of such commemorations takes a great sin on his soul. If someone, out of malice, as a joke, or out of ignorance, ordered a funeral service for a living person by falsifying his death certificate (otherwise the priest would refuse this rite), he needs to repent and confess.
If the relatives of a person who went missing many years ago, without malicious intent, ordered his funeral service in absentia for the Orthodox deceased, but he later showed up, this is not a sin and cannot in any way affect the future life of this person. But if it is not known for certain whether a person is alive or dead, it is better to order prayer services to the holy martyr John the Warrior and Archangel Gabriel in the church.
In this case, a lot depends on how much time has passed. If more than 10 years have passed, the person begins to be considered deceased, and a funeral service can be performed for him. You just have to get a death certificate from the court. Without this document, the church will refuse to perform the funeral service for the missing person.
Memorial service for 40 days
If until the ninth day the soul of the deceased was in the heavenly abodes, then after that the angels accompany it to hell. She sees the torment of unrepentant sinners and goes through many ordeals. Exactly on the 40th day, the soul again appears before the Lord. This moment is the most crucial: the soul has to find out where it will be assigned before the Second Coming of the Lord. The more people pray for the deceased, the more sincere the appeals to the Almighty, the greater the likelihood that the soul will go to heaven. A memorial service on this day is obligatory.
For 40 days, relatives and friends of the deceased pray for him at home and in churches, order magpie, visit the grave in the cemetery and gather for a meal to remember the good deeds of the deceased, to console each other with good memories. In this case, in the church note they already write “deceased” or “of ever-memorable”, since the soul leaves the earth forever and gains eternity.
How does a candle for the repose of a living person work?
Good day. The magician Azal is with you. I regularly receive questions about how a candle for the repose of a living person works. This is often asked by students who have just begun their training in magic, or simply by ordinary people interested in magic. The interest is based on a common misconception that this is not a clever way to send a person to the next world. This is not entirely true, or rather, not at all true. And how exactly - this, in fact, will be discussed in today’s article. The article will be useful primarily for beginners or those simply interested. She will answer questions that I have received more than once during communication or correspondence:
- How does a candle for the repose of a living person work?
- What should I do if I find out that a memorial candle has been lit for me or my loved one in a church?
- I have a suspicion that candles are being lit for me or my loved one, but how can I check?
- How to get rid of such negativity, how to neutralize it? Can I do this myself or do I need to contact a professional?
- One person makes me very angry, but what if we light candles for his repose? What will happen?
So, let's begin. A candle for the repose of a living person is used in completely different ways and for different purposes. Let's look at how this action is used by master magicians. And at the same time I will explain the principle of its operation.
Why?
By doing this, he strains his karma (unfortunately, there are no articles about karma on my website yet, but this topic will definitely be covered, so subscribe to the news, and in the end you will understand everything step by step). (There will also be a separate article about the decline in work, but for now take it as a fact that this is the end.)
- Victims often have nightmares or dreams with church paraphernalia. For example, in a dream he sees a black dog standing at the gate of a church, melted wax, a crucifix with burning candles, etc. Such dreams are most often in dark colors or black and white, leaving behind unpleasant, wary sensations.
- Near such a person, candles most often crackle and smoke black, sometimes even going out.
- The physical condition is characterized by increased blood pressure, hot flashes to the head and chest (not to the cheeks or ears, but to the head and/or chest), slight pallor. Paleness can be well expressed, but this is in cases where the spirits of death have come to grips with the person.
What should I do if they light candles for my repose?
I already wrote above that you can do simple magical cleaning by simply rolling it out with an egg. It is also rational to think about establishing magical protection against similar or any other magical influences.
This is probably where I end my article. I wrote what I considered the most important and tried to present it all as clearly as possible. If something turned out to be unclear or you did not find in this article the answer to your question on the topic “ Candle for the repose of a living person
", then please ask it in the comments. Sincerely, Azal, author of articles and owner of the site “Magician on Magic”.

Is the funeral service ordered in advance?
Not all temples are open every day. In many churches, services are held only on Sundays or holidays. If Memorial Day falls in the middle of the week, you can order a memorial service for the next weekend or a suitable Orthodox holiday. It’s great if a family goes to the same church and confesses to a certain priest. In the event of the death of a relative, you can always contact the minister and agree on joint prayer at the memorial service.
A memorial service is an opportunity to help the soul of a loved one come closer to God.
Prayers said from the heart can comfort the living and bring spiritual benefit to the dead. Each memorial service contains words that inspire hope for the forgiveness of the Almighty. Ask your question
Who can and who can’t have a funeral service in church
There are many superstitions and legends associated with death, but not all of them should be believed. Questions about whether it is possible to perform a funeral service for a particular person are best asked to the confessor or any other priest. The Russian Orthodox Church only sometimes refuses to perform a funeral service for a person. For example, if a dying baptized person did not have time to confess and receive unction before death, this is not grounds for refusal.
Who is not buried in Orthodoxy?
In the church you cannot perform funeral services for people of other faiths or atheists who have not been baptized, because During their lifetime these people were not part of the Church. Also, funeral services are not held in the frame for those who:
- committed suicide;
- lived as an obvious atheist;
- renounced the Church, although he was baptized.
But there are exceptions to these rules. If the suicide suffered from mental illness during his lifetime (and there is confirmation of this), he can have a funeral service in absentia. To obtain permission to perform a special rite, it is necessary to obtain a certificate of psychopathology from the attending physician or from the psychoneurological dispensary where the deceased was treated.
Permission is taken from the diocesan administration. Only the bishop can give a blessing for the funeral of such a person; the parish priest has no right to decide such issues.
People who take their own lives through carelessness (unintentional falling, drowning or poisoning) are not considered suicides. They are buried on a general basis if it is proven that there was no malicious intent in their actions. However, you should not be cunning and forge documents. If you achieve a funeral service for a suicide by cunning, it will not bring any relief to the soul of the deceased. Any cunning goes against God.
If a person lived as an atheist, but before death he confessed, repented and received unction, he may be buried. This even applies to serial killers. But people who died from wounds received during a robbery (that is, they themselves were criminals) can be equated to suicide, and they will be refused a funeral service. However, victims of robbery are always given a funeral service even if, as a result of their actions (self-defense), the attackers were killed or maimed.
In accordance with the canonical rule, a priest may refuse to perform a funeral service if the deceased has never visited a church in his life and was baptized purely formally in childhood. But usually this issue can be resolved.
There is also no funeral service for children killed in the womb as a result of abortion, or for those who were stillborn. If the child was baptized immediately after birth, but he lived for several hours or days, he can be served with a funeral service.
But you need to understand that you can and should pray for any deceased at home. In home prayer you can remember people of other faiths, suicides, and atheists. The absence of a funeral service should not prohibit the funeral prayers of loved ones. Moreover, souls who have not been inveterate need even more prayerful support from their relatives. Those. in fact, only their loved ones ask for them. We must remember to remember the departed and wish them the Kingdom of Heaven.
Is it possible to perform funeral services for drug addicts and alcoholics?
Drug addiction and alcoholism are serious diseases, as a result of which a person causes great harm to himself and others. These pathologies are addiction, but it does not deny the possibility of repentance, unction and funeral services.
Orthodox Christians suffering from alcohol and drug addiction may be punished if they died a natural death or were killed rather than committing suicide. But the Russian Orthodox Church does not consider suicide committed in a state of pathological intoxication (exposure to large doses of alcohol) as grounds for refusal to perform a funeral service.
Is it possible to have a funeral service for women who died in childbirth?
If a woman was an Orthodox Christian and died during childbirth or within 40 days after it, she can be buried according to the same rules as the rest of the deceased. Any information that women who died during childbirth or on the fortieth day cannot have a funeral service are superstitions and have nothing to do with Orthodox teaching. The same goes for women who die due to complications from an abortion.
