Among all Orthodox saints, the Venerable Parthenius of Kiev occupies a special place. On the day of his memory, March 25, many believers gather to say a prayer petition with various requests. What do they pray to the saint for and why are the instructions of the saint valuable? You will learn about Parthenius of Kyiv from our article.
About Parthenia of Kiev
Pyotr Krasnopevtsev was born in 1972 in the village. Simonovo, Aleksinsky district, Tula province. His father was a sexton. The saint's parents were poor. From an early age, he realized that there is no universal well-being, so there is no need to strive for material wealth.
In 1805, the future saint graduated from the Tula Theological School. After this he was transferred to the seminary. One night he was given a vision. The young man saw a dove that became invisible at dawn. According to Parthenius of Kyiv, from then on he did not want anything earthly.
In 1814, Peter visited the Kiev Pechersk Lavra for the first time. She impressed the future saint so much that the young man wanted to live in her all his life. In 1819 Peter entered the Lavra. At first he was given work in the vineyard and in the garden, then - on the prosphora.
The future saint was distinguished by his modesty in everyday life. The novice did not want worries about material things to distract from prayer. Having noticed the spiritual qualities of the novice, he was given the position of head of the prosphora. At a time when he was struggling with despondency, St. Peter appeared to Peter. Nicodemus the Prosphoran, holding the Psalter. After this vision, the future saint began to read the entire Psalter every day. He memorized it.
In 1824, Peter took monastic vows. He changed his name to Paphnutius. After this he was ordained a hierodeacon. Paphnutius soon began to suffer from severe headaches, which tormented him for more than 30 years, but he endured them with humility. Only sometimes, due to worsening pain, the monk asked to be released from some obediences.
In 1829, Paphnutius was ordained a hieromonk. Before this event he had a vision. In it he appeared at the altar before the Bishop and the Virgin Mary. Some time after this, Hieromonk Paphnutius received the position of confessor of the brethren. After 3 years, he was appointed to serve in the Assumption Cathedral, and in 1833 - to work as a bookseller at the Lavra printing house. In 1838 he accepted the schema.
There was a period in the life of Parthenius when he suffered because he did not know persecution. The monk doubted that he was following the path of the ascetics, because they were always persecuted. To such doubts, St. Filaret (Amphiteatrov) said: “You are persecuting yourself; who now wants to live your life.” Such words were caused by the fact that St. Parthenius was tormented not only by excruciating headaches and chest pain (in the last years of his life he suffered from suffocation and coughing), but also by demons.
From the beginning of spring until autumn, Parthenius lived in Goloseevo. There, the monk, after the morning liturgy, went into the forest to pray. Thirsting for solitude, he thought about stopping receiving visitors who wanted to communicate with him, but he saw a dream about a beast that his spiritual children were driving away from him with sticks.
Before his death, the monk lived in guard cells in the Near Caves. The ascetic joyfully awaited the day of death. He talked with delight about how the soul, having left the body, would begin to shine like the sun. On March 25, 1855, the ascetic died.
How prayer helps
People still resort to the prayers of St. Parthenius of Kyiv today, because they still do not lose their relevance.
Advice! In moments of despondency or despair, when it seems that everything in life is going for the worst, a person can read the prayer message of the saint and in this find peace for his own soul.
The text of the prayer cleanses thoughts from everything sinful and nasty, strengthens faith in the Lord. This is what brings us closer to the Creator and gives us a chance for salvation in eternal life.
Instructions and sayings of the saint
Reasoning is superior to all virtues; through it the soul resists the passions and thoughts that overwhelm it.
Reasoning is supreme; patience is most needed; silence is best; verbosity is the worst.
You should never quickly follow your thoughts, even if they are good, but test them with time.
To acquire patience in sorrows and temptations, believe that everything is done to us according to the will of God.
Inexpressible benefits come from solitude, but prayer must be inseparable from it.
Solitude and prayer are above all good.
It is indescribably difficult to acquire true prayer. More than once for this feat the soul will approach the gates of death. But whoever is worthy of acquiring it, it will grow into his heart like a sore and nothing will erase it.
Love for God can be kindled in the soul only through unceasing prayer.
External solitude must be accompanied by internal solitude. Only complete withdrawal from people, body and mind, can give peace of mind.
The enemy brings despondency to every soul that wants to be saved. The fear of God wears out the flesh more than fasting and all labors. Whoever has acquired it has neither sorrow nor joy on earth.
Man, with all his efforts, without the assistance of God, cannot control either his outer life or the state of his soul. Without God you can't reach the threshold.
Our human will is only to wish good and seek means for it, and the doer and doer of all good is God; and the evil is from us. To live well, to do well, and to think well is not a sacrifice to God, but a human duty to Him.
To avoid embarrassment and preserve the spirit of prayer, avoid all kinds of conversations and visits, prefer solitude over everything and often think about death.
Whoever has not achieved the measure of perfection himself and begins to teach others, destroys what he had.
Use all means to achieve peace of mind, and you will not find it with anything other than prayer and solitude.
Brief life of the saint
In worldly life the saint's name was Peter. He was born in the Tula province. His family was poor. From childhood, the boy deeply believed in the Lord God. He was distinguished by infantile purity and kindness. He saw his salvation from poverty only in prayers, so he offered them in his free moment.
Even at a young age, while studying at a theological seminary, Peter walked on foot all the way to the Kiev Pechersk Lavra. Seeing her, he felt incredible joy. Then he decided that he would remain a novice in it. For more than 10 years he worked in a professional position. He did not refuse hard work, but worked like many other novices. Daily prayer strengthened his faith and gave him strength to work.
After some time, the monk became a monk. Then he was given the name Paphnutius and became the confessor of the Lavra, who memorized the psalter and read prayers up to 300 times a day. Three years later, at the age of 46, he was tonsured into the schema. Before his death, Parthenius lived in solitude. The place of solitude was a nearby cave in the laurel. He died on March 25, 1855, on the day of the Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary.
Throughout his life, the monk had several visions of the Mother of God and the monk, after which he devoted his life to preaching and spiritual life.

To the Lord
Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, do not allow vanity, self-love, sensuality, negligence, anger to dominate me and snatch me away from Your love. O my Lord, my Creator, is all my hope? Do not leave me without a lot in blissful eternity; do it, so that I too will follow Your holy example, I will be submissive to the authorities placed over me; Grant me this purity of spirit, this simplicity of heart, which make us worthy of Your love. To You, O my God, I lift up my soul and my heart: do not allow Your creation to perish, but deliver me from the only and greatest evil: sin. Grant, Lord, that I may endure with the same patience the restlessness and sorrow of my soul with which I accept the pleasures of my heart. If You want, Lord, you can cleanse and sanctify me. Behold, I surrender myself to Your goodness, asking you to destroy from me everything that is contrary to You and join me to the ranks of Your chosen ones. God! Take away from me the idleness of spirit that destroys time; vanity of thoughts that interferes with Your presence and distracts my attention in prayer; If, while praying, I deviate from You with my thoughts, then help me, so that this entertainment is not arbitrary, and by turning my mind away, I will not turn my heart away from You. I confess to You, my Lord God, all the sins of my iniquity, now and before, committed before You: forgive me them, for the sake of Your holy name, and save my soul, which You have redeemed with Your precious Blood. I surrender myself to Your mercy, I surrender myself to Your will, do with me according to Your goodness, and not according to my malice and lawlessness. Teach me, Lord, to arrange my affairs so that they contribute to the glorification of Your holy name. Have mercy, Lord, on all Christians; Hear the desire of all who cry out to You, deliver from all evil, save Your servants (names), send them joy, consolation in sorrows and Your holy mercy. Lord, I pray to You especially for those who have offended and saddened me in some way or have done any evil: do not punish them for the sake of a sinner, but pour out Your goodness on them. Lord, I pray to You for all those whom I, a sinner, have saddened, offended or tempted, in word, deed, thought, knowledge or ignorance. Lord God! Forgive us our sins and mutual offenses; remove from our hearts, Lord, all indignation, suspicion, anger, bitterness, quarrels and everything that can hinder love and reduce brotherly love. Have mercy, Lord, on those who entrusted me, a sinner, unworthy, to pray for them! Have mercy, Lord, on everyone who asks for Your help. God! Make this day a day of Thy mercy, give to everyone according to his request; be the shepherd of the lost, the leader and light of the ignorant, the mentor of the unwise, the father of the orphans, the helper of the oppressed, the doctor of the sick, the comforter of the dying, and lead us all to the desired end - to You, our refuge and blessed rest. Amen.

When I, depressed by illness, feel the approaching end of my earthly existence: Lord, have mercy on me. When my poor heart, at its last beats, languishes and languishes in mortal pain: Lord, have mercy on me. When the mortal pallor of my face and my cold body strikes my loved ones with fear: Lord, have mercy on me. When my vision is darkened and my voice is cut off, my tongue turns to stone: Lord, have mercy on me. When terrible ghosts and visions begin to drive me to despair of Your mercy: Lord, have mercy on me. When my soul, struck by the memories of my crimes and the fear of Your judgment, becomes exhausted in the fight against the enemies of my salvation, who are trying to drag me into the darkness of torment: Lord, have mercy on me. When the sweat of death drenches me, and the soul with painful suffering moves away from the body: Lord, have mercy on me. When mortal darkness closes all the objects of this world from my dim gaze: Lord, have mercy on me. When all sensation in my body ceases, my veins become numb and my muscles turn to stone: Lord, have mercy on me. When human speech and earthly sounds no longer reach my ears: Lord, have mercy on me. When the soul appears before Your face, O God, in anticipation of Your appointment: Lord, have mercy on me. When I begin to heed the righteous sentence of Your judgment, which determines my eternal fate: Lord, have mercy on me. When the body, abandoned by the soul, becomes the prey of worms and decay and, finally, my entire composition turns into a handful of dust: Lord, have mercy on me. When the sound of the trumpet awakens everyone at Your second coming and the book of my deeds is opened: Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me, Your sinful servant (name). In Your hands, O Lord, I commend my spirit. Amen.
