Prophet Nahum 2022: what date according to the church calendar

Life of the Prophet Nahum

Prophet Nahum - one of the twelve minor prophets, came from Galilee, the village of Elkosha. Some time later, when the Assyrian invasion began, Saint Naum moved to Judea. He lived there in the 700s BC, when Isain prophesied.

The prophet devoted his entire life to the service of God. At the same time, he wrote a book that was a prophecy about the fall and destruction of Nineveh, the capital of the Assyrian kingdom. This was due to the fact that the kingdom threatened the entire world around; the book vividly reflected the fate of its capital, which was to be greatly destroyed.

God's punishment overtook the capital due to the fact that its inhabitants stained their lives with sins. Ion also prophesied about the fall of the city. After his prophecy, seeing that it did not come true, the townspeople began to commit their evil deeds again.

The reason for this prophecy was the victory of the Jews under the walls of Jerusalem. They were glad to be freed, but were very afraid that Sennacherib would again gather a large army. To calm and encourage the townspeople, the prophet made a speech and said that in the near future the enemy’s capital would be destroyed.

The very name of the prophet “Nahum” is translated from Hebrew as “consolation.” Some historians suggest that this is a pseudonym. This is due to the fact that at that time it was dangerous to openly profess a faith that differed from the pagan one.

The prophet is best known for his book. According to some information, it was compiled at the time of the fall of No-Amon. This city is also mentioned in the book. The Prophet writes with extraordinary spiritual enthusiasm and dresses his speech in solemn poetic speech. /

When reading the book, many people pay attention to the fact that the book of Nahum is in many ways similar to the book of Jonah. However, there is one big difference - Nahum has a lot of undisguised vindictive delight in relation to the city itself and its inhabitants. This can be connected with the imprisonment of the Jews and the fact that the prophet himself had to be in exile for a long time.

The main essence of the book is that all tyrants face one thing - a righteous Judgment. The madness and cruelty they used would sooner or later turn against the tyrants themselves. According to some information, the prophecy came true; all the townspeople suffered a terrible tragedy, as the capital was captured by other conquerors.

Little is known about other circumstances of the life of the prophet Nahum. According to legend, he died at the age of 45 and was buried on his own land.

Orthodox prayer - Orthodox book

Prophet Nahum (VII century BC) is one of the twelve so-called minor prophets, originally from Elkosh, a city in northern Palestine. He preached at the end of the kingdom of Israel, during the reign of Hezekiah. The circumstances of the prophet's life are almost unknown. According to some reports, he died at the age of 45. In Rus', the prophet Nahum has long been revered as an assistant in “mental” studies, a “grammer.” Therefore, the prophet, among other things, is asked for help for children beginning to learn, wisdom in teaching and leadership for the pastors of the Church.

First prayer to the prophet Nahum

Holy prophet of God Nahum, enlighten me and with your mercy instruct me to practice good leadership. Amen.

Second prayer to the prophet Nahum

O most praiseworthy and wonderful prophet of God, Nahum! Hear us, sinners and indecent ones, who at this hour stand before your holy icon and diligently resort to your intercession. Pray for us, the Lover of Mankind, God, may He give us a spirit of repentance and contrition for our sins and, by His omnipotent grace, may He help us to leave the paths of wickedness, and may we succeed in every good work, may He strengthen us in the fight against our passions and lusts; may the spirit of humility and meekness, the spirit of brotherly love and kindness, the spirit of patience and chastity, the spirit of zeal for the glory of God and the salvation of our neighbors, implant into our hearts. Abolish with your prayers, prophet, the evil customs of the world, especially the destructive and pernicious spirit of this age, infecting the Christian race with disrespect for the Divine Orthodox faith, for the statutes of the Holy Church and for the commandments of the Lord, with disrespect for parents and those in power, and casting people into the abyss of wickedness , corruption and destruction. Turn away from us, most wonderfully prophesied, by your intercession the righteous wrath of God, and deliver all the cities and towns of our kingdom from rainlessness and famine, from terrible storms and earthquakes, from deadly plagues and diseases, from the invasion of enemies and internecine warfare. Strengthen Orthodox people with your prayers, prosper them in all good deeds and undertakings for the establishment of peace and truth in their power. Help the All-Russian Christ-loving army in battle with our enemies. Ask, prophet of God, from the Lord for our shepherds holy zeal for God, heartfelt concern for the salvation of the flock, wisdom in teaching and management, piety and strength in temptation, ask the judges for impartiality and selflessness, righteousness and compassion for the offended, for all those in authority to care for their subordinates, mercy and justice, while for subordinates submission and obedience to authority and diligent fulfillment of their duties; Yes, having lived in peace and piety in this world, we will be worthy to partake of eternal blessings in the Kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, to whom honor and worship are due, together with His Beginning Father and the Most Holy Spirit, forever and ever. Amen.

Saint Naum's Day

Celebrations in honor of the prophet Nahum are celebrated by the Orthodox Church on December 14 according to the new style (December 1 according to the Julian calendar).

In the old days, the Old Testament saint was called the Competent One, as he patronized his disciples. Therefore, this day was equated to the beginning of the school year. In addition, this time was the most convenient for the peasants, since all field work had already been completed, and children’s help with housework was not required.

But not all families could afford to send their children to school. Most peasants agreed with the parish secretary about the education of young people. In addition, according to established tradition, the opening ceremony took place:

  • a special prayer service was ordered, which was attended by the whole family;
  • after the service, the parents asked the priest for a blessing to begin their child’s education;
  • the teacher who came to the house was received with respect and honor;
  • after the first lesson the teacher received gifts and prepared a special gift for him.

There were even special signs for this day. It was forbidden to eat during lessons, to leave books open, otherwise everything learned was instantly forgotten. Many parents still turn to the prophet with requests to endow their children with reason and help them understand the sciences.

Orthodox texts

During the service dedicated to the Old Testament prophet, the troparion and kontakion are performed. You can also turn to Saint Naum with a special prayer of intercession before the Lord.

Troparion

The memory of Your prophet Nahum, O Lord, is celebrated, so we pray to You: save our souls.

Kontakion

Enlightened by the Spirit, your pure heart, the prophecies were your brightest friend: you will see more, as if the present, distant. You have tamed the lions thrown into the ditch; That is why we honor, prophet of blessing, glorious Nahum.

Meaning in Orthodoxy

The prophetic texts of Nahum are of no small importance for Orthodox Christians. His book teaches believers devotion to the Lord, the need for strict observance of God's commandments.

In his prophetic speeches, the saint points to the limitless omnipotence of the Lord. The example of Nineveh shows what kind of punishment awaits those who anger the Almighty with their sinful and unrepentant life.

The book of the Old Testament prophet shows the power of the Creator’s wrath directed at those who want to destroy the object of their love. The Lord is long-suffering and merciful, ready to forgive many sins. But unrighteous and unjust deeds multiply sins, filling the cup of patience of a loving God, forcing him to show His wrath.

Nahum's words not only warn against punishment, but also encourage zealous followers of Christ. For any Orthodox Christian there is no other path other than the path of Christ. It is difficult to follow this path, because every person is sinful, everyone is endowed with a passionate beginning. But anyone who is ready to admit their sins and repent has hope of meeting the Savior and finding unity with the Lord.
