Translation: First of the Apostles and universal teachers, pray to the Lord of all the world of the universe to grant great mercy to our souls.
We are preparing for the service of the Presentation of the Lord. "Troparion, Kontakion"
In the previous article, the prayer of Simeon the God-Receiver “Now you let go...” was commented on. Let's continue to analyze the chants of the holiday.
The Feast of the Presentation, due to its features of worship, is ranked among the twelve, but not the Lord's, but the Theotokos feasts. It has 1 day of forefeast and 6 days of afterfeast.
In its structure, the holiday service is the same as on all the feasts of the Mother of God. But at the same time, it has the characteristic features of the Lord's holiday: during the Liturgy, at the small entrance, the entrance verse is pronounced and after it the troparion and kontakion of the holiday are sung. At the end of the all-night vigil and Liturgy there is a special holiday. Also, at the Liturgy in the Valaam Monastery, according to the Athonite tradition, festive antiphons are sung.
Notes of Valaam everyday life
Most of the hymns of the holiday service are addressed to the Lord Jesus Christ: kontakion, stichera, canon. The troparion is addressed to the Mother of God, the magnification glorifies both the Lord and the Blessed Virgin.
In this regard, we can say that the feast of the Presentation is both the Mother of God and the Lord's feast. From the moment of its inception, the Feast of the Presentation was clearly the Lord’s in its entire character. However, in the West he was usually viewed more as the Mother of God. Over time, in the East, it also gradually transformed towards the celebration of the Theotokos, although in its rites it was still fixed in the form of a “mixed” holiday, containing individual features of both the Lord’s and the Theotokos’ celebration.
With the divine service on the feast of the Presentation, the Church glorifies Christ our God with the participants of the celebrated event - the Ever-Virgin Mother of God and Simeon.
Troparion, tone 1: Rejoice, Blessed Virgin Mary, / from You has risen the Sun of Truth - Christ, our God, / to enlighten those who are in darkness. / Rejoice, O righteous elder, / received into the arms of the Liberator of our souls, / who gives us resurrection. | Rejoice, blessed Virgin Mary, / for from You has arisen the Sun of righteousness, Christ our God, / enlightening those in darkness. / Rejoice, O righteous old man, / who accepted into the arms of the Liberator of our souls, / who gives us resurrection. |
Rejoice, Blessed Virgin Mary...
The Most Holy Theotokos is called to great joy, since the Savior of the world Himself is brought to the temple of the Lord and clearly receives praise from the righteous of the Old Testament: Simeon and Anna. The prophecies about the coming of the Messiah have been fulfilled, the Old Testament is being replaced by the New.
...for from You rose the Sun of Truth - Christ our God...
The name of the Lord as the Sun of Truth is borrowed from the prophet Malachi, who predicts: “And for you, who revere My name, the Sun of Truth will rise and healing in His rays.”
(Mal. 4:2).
This vivid prophetic expression is also used in the festive service of the Nativity of Christ, where the Savior is called the “reasonable Sun of Truth”
that shone from the Virgin - for example, in the troparion of the prophecy of the Great Vespers of the Nativity of Christ:
Thus, there is an internal connection between the events being celebrated, because the Presentation of the Lord is celebrated on the 40th day after Christmas, precisely on the day when the Blessed Virgin brought the Infant of God to the Jerusalem Temple.
...enlighten those who are in darkness.
Here the psalmist expresses the idea of the purpose of Christ’s coming to earth - to enlighten with the light of Truth all mankind, who were previously in the darkness of ignorance of God. Isaiah prophesies about this in this way, describing the appeal of God the Father to Jesus Christ: “Because the Lord God called thee [...] to bring them from them that were bound, and from the house of prison, and them that sat in darkness.”
Translation:
“I, the Lord, have called You […] to bring the prisoners out of prison, and those who sit in darkness out of prison”
(Isaiah 42:6-7).
The prophet is confirmed by the Evangelist Matthew: “the people sitting in darkness saw a great light, and to those sitting in the land and shadow of death the light has dawned”
(Matthew 4:16).
We find the same idea about the enlightenment of all peoples in the troparion of the prophecy of the Great Vespers of Epiphany: “Thou hast appeared in the world, Who created the world, / that thou mayest enlighten those who sit in darkness.”
. So, the holidays of Epiphany and the Presentation of the Lord turn out to be closely related to each other. This is explained by the fact that historically Epiphany was a general holiday, including the memory of the events of Christmas, Candlemas, and the Annunciation (see more here). And only later the feast of the Presentation was singled out as an independent memory.
Enlightenment of the Gentiles, “those in darkness”
, which both holidays point to, begins almost immediately after the Presentation of the Infant Jesus in the Jerusalem Temple.
It is known that soon after this event, Joseph and Mary, at the command of the Angel of the Lord, fled with Him to Egypt, hiding Him from the rage of Herod, who ordered the beating of the Bethlehem babies. According to the testimony of ancient legend, as soon as the Infant of God was brought to the first Egyptian city, all his idols fell to the ground and were crushed, and the prophetic word was fulfilled over them: “ Behold, the Lord sits on a light cloud
,” in the arms of the Most Pure Virgin Mary,
“ and he will come to Egypt, and the things made with hands of Egypt will be shaken at His presence”
(Isaiah XIX, 1).
The Akathist to the Most Holy Theotokos testifies to this: “Who shone in Egypt with the enlightenment of truth, you drove away the darkness of lies: for idols, O Savior, do not tolerate Your fortress, fallen one”
(Akathist, ikos 6). The prophecy of the flight to Egypt is contained in the 3rd paremia of the festive vespers.
Rejoice, you too, righteous elder,
After the Fall of Adam and Eve, humanity forgot how to relate to God. In fact, the entire subsequent life of the human race was a long and tedious wait for a meeting with the Lord.
And so, the old elder Simeon joyfully accepts the Infant of God into his arms, announcing the coming of his Creator to this world. In the person of the righteous man, the human race, after many millennia of its self-imposed separation from God, finally met its Creator.
… accepted into the arms of the Liberator of our souls, / who gives us resurrection.
Righteous Simeon does not just take the Lord in his arms, but accepts Him “into his arms”
. This is how the great joy of the righteous is poetically conveyed, because we usually embrace a loved one after a long separation. The joy that he holds in his arms God Himself, that He holds the One Who, by His mysterious will, having transgressed the limits of eternity and omnipotence, has “reduced itself” to the state of a helpless Baby.
The kontakion of the holiday was written by the Venerable Roman the Sweet Singer (5th – early 6th century). Nowadays only a small part (kontakion and ikos) of the original work of Romanus is used in worship. The ancient kontakion of Saint Romanus was a whole poem and consisted of more than 20 stanzas or ikos. The modern kontakion is a promenon (introduction) for the ancient kontakion-poem of the monk.
Kontakion, tone 1: You sanctified the womb of the Maiden with Your Nativity/ and blessed the hand of Simeon,/ as it was fitting, having foreshadowed,/ and now you have saved us, O Christ God,/ but die in battle,/ and strengthen the people whom you have loved, the only One who loves mankind. | Having sanctified the womb of the Virgin with Your birth, / and blessed the hands of Simeon, / in advance, as it should have been, / and now You have saved us, O Christ God. / But protect Your people with peace in the midst of wars / and strengthen those whom You have loved, / Only Lover of Mankind. |
The womb of the Maiden, consecrated by Thy Nativity...
The Most Holy Theotokos, of course, was sanctified by the birth in the flesh of God Himself and the Creator of the universe.
... and blessed hand of Simeon,
In the Gospel we read: “And Simeon blessed them” (Luke 2:34). But the Monk Roman expresses an interesting thought here: spiritually, the Lord blessed the righteous elder, and not vice versa. As Saint Cosmas of Maium also points out this in the canon of the holiday, describing the appeal of the Divine Infant to the elder Simeon: “It is not the elder who holds Me, but I who hold him: for he asks for forgiveness from Me.”
(chorus of the 9th song of the canon). That is, I (Jesus Christ) keep him (in life on earth), since he asks Me for leave from it.
... as befittingly, having prefaced,
As befits a Lover of mankind, the Savior in advance ( "previously"
) blesses and releases the righteous old man to rest, without waiting for His open departure to serve the world.
... and now you have saved us, O Christ God,
Here the hymnographer glorifies the Lord for deliverance from the troubles (earthquake and pestilence) that once befell the Eastern Church and, by the grace of God, ceased under the Emperor Justinian.
... but die in battle /
From the 5th century, under Emperor Anastasia I, a long era of the Persian offensive on the Byzantine possessions in Syria began. Venerable Romanus prays for the granting of peace and an end to the war with the Persians: “ Die in battle.”
».
... and strengthen the people whom you have loved, O One who loves mankind.
Continuing his prayer, the hymnographer asks the Lord for the physical and spiritual strengthening of the inhabitants of the empire contemporary to him.
Saint Theophan the Recluse also calls us to spiritual strengthening, pointing out the inner meaning of the holiday: “What a touching picture the Presentation of the Lord presents to us! The very old man Simeon, holding the baby of God in his arms, on both sides of him are Joseph the Righteous and the Blessed Virgin Mary; not far away is Anna the Prophetess, an eighty-four-year-old faster and prayer worker. Everyone's eyes are fixed on the Savior. They disappear into Him with attention and from Him they drink spiritual sweetness that nourishes their souls. […] But, brethren, we are all called not to just a mental representation of this bliss, but to actually taste it
, because everyone
is called to have and carry the Lord within themselves
and to disappear in Him with all the strength of their spirit. […] I will briefly show you how to achieve this. […] Repent; then, zealous for the fulfillment of every commandment of God, walk relentlessly before the Lord, directing toward Him with all the attention of the mind, with all the feelings of the heart, with all the desires of the will. Having settled in this way, you will soon meet the Lord. He will enter into you and rest in you, as in the arms of Simeon the Righteous. There is no longer any possibility of easing the work necessary in seeking to meet the Lord with anything else.”
Greatness of the holiday: We magnify You, / Life-giving Christ, / and honor Your Most Pure Mother, / By Her, according to the law, / You have now been brought to the temple of the Lord. | We magnify You, / Giver of life, Christ, / and honor Your Most Pure Mother, / By Whom You, in fulfillment of the Law, / have now been brought into the temple of the Lord. |

And the first throne of the throne and the universal teacher, pray to the Lord of all to grant peace to the universe and great mercy to our souls.
Kontakion to the Council of the Glorious and All-Valuable 12 Apostles
To the stone, Christ glorifies the stone of faith brightly, the disciples in abundance, and with Paul the entire twelve-strong council today, whose memory is faithfully fulfilled, we glorify these Glorified Ones.
First Prayer to the Council of the Twelve Apostles
About the saints, the apostles of Christ: Peter and Andrew, James and John, Philip and Bartholomew, Thomas and Matthew, James and Jude, Simon and Matthew! Hear our prayers and sighs, now offered by our contrite hearts, and help us, the servants of God (names), through your powerful intercession before the Lord, to get rid of all evil and enemy flattery, and to firmly preserve the Orthodox faith that you have devoted to us, without any wounds in it through your intercession, We will not be belittled by reprimand, nor by pestilence, nor by any wrath from our Creator, but we will live a peaceful life here and be honored to see good things on the land of the living, glorifying the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, the One in the Trinity, glorified and worshiped God, now and ever and to the ages centuries.
Second prayer
Cathedral of the Twelve Apostles
In the Lord Almighty, Lord our God, who chose His beloved disciples and Apostles to preach salvation to the whole world, giving them the power to forgive sins, accept their petitions for the human race, and judge with them imashi, those same ones, like Your friends, who are very honest to us We dare, in our unworthiness, to bring you into intercession with You, much hastening towards the salvation of our souls, praying for them earnestly. Holy Chief Apostles Peter and Paul, Evangelists of Christ John the Theologian and Matthew, First-Called Disciple Andrew, who blessed Russia with the planting of the Cross, Holy Apostles James, the brother of the Lord, with the other James, Philip, Bartholomew, Thomas, Simon, Judas and Matthias! All holy apostles of God's choice, most noble servants of Christ, eradicators of godlessness and planters of the true faith, help us through your powerful intercession before the Lord to get rid of all evil and enemy flattery, to firmly preserve the Orthodox faith devoted to you, in which, through your intercession, neither wounds, nor rebuke, nor pestilence, we will not be belittled by any wrath from the Creator, but let us live a peaceful life here and may we be honored to see good things on the land of the living, glorifying the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, the one God glorified and worshiped in the Trinity, now and ever and unto the ages of ages. Amen.

General troparia for the holy saints of God
no comments
Every Orthodox Christian, studying church hymnography, probably paid attention to the presence in it of such a concept as a general troparion. What it is? The troparion itself is a laconic religious chant dedicated to God, the Mother of God, or some holy or festive event. This chant has a historical and dogmatic character: revealing at the same time the content of an event or the life of a saint and its deep meaning, it reminds a believer of the essence of the holiday. It is customary in the Orthodox Church to sing or read troparia during every service.
The difference between the general troparion and the special troparion
The general troparion is a chant that can be sung in honor of any saint from one rank of holiness. In the Orthodox tradition, the following general troparia are distinguished:
- To the all-merciful Savior
- Holy Mother of God
- To the prophet(s)
- To the Apostle(s)
- Saint(s)
- Reverend (Reverend)
- Martyr(s)
- To the Confessor(s)
- Unmercenaries
- Fools for Christ's sake
They are written in a general form and describe the qualities that glorified this or that order of saints. For example, in the general troparion to the martyrs, the sufferings of the saint are spoken of; about what spiritual reward he received for it. The troparion ends with a prayer that calls on the sufferer to help those who pray to him.
How to read the general troparion correctly?
In church worship, both special and general troparia take their strict place, corresponding to the Rule. When a layman prays in his cell, everything is much simpler: the troparia to the saints can be read as a prayer rule or as a separate prayer on the corresponding holidays. The reading of a general troparion is practiced if a special troparion does not exist - this often happens when the memory of a little-known saint or a saint is celebrated, whose veneration is simply not included in the custom of the Russian Orthodox Church.

Folk versions of the Easter troparion “Christ is Risen” in the Smolensk Dnieper region
The Easter Troparion “Christ is Risen” is an everyday hymn of Orthodox worship - found not only in church, but also in folk musical practice. Under these conditions, it was first recorded in the Smolensk region by folklore expeditions of the Russian Academy of Music. Gnessins in the 80s of the XX century. Folk versions of the troparion were systematically recorded in this territory. In total, about one and a half hundred sound recordings of the troparion were made in folk interpretation, as well as conversations with folk performers about the conditions for its sound.
In folk tradition, as in church practice, the troparion “Christ is Risen” was performed throughout the entire Easter season - from Easter to Ascension. It was sung in any situation: walking along the streets of the village, on the way to or from the field, in houses, during work and festive feasts. The troparion is part of the musical design of all rites of this period: “Christ was shouted from Easter to Ascension. In the morning we go to church, and from the church we shout for Christ. From the church to the house, this one was laid out - six weeks before the Ascension, forty days from Easter, this is all they sang, all the time: both quickly and from the field. Wherever they gathered - in one place, or in general - these forty days were hell and this was the song "(village of Vskhody Ugransky district), "All around the people they chanted for Ushesstya (Ushesstya is ahead of the Spirit!) They chanted for Ushesstya, that means, lives all around. As the villagers walked around, they also shouted for Christ. It’s only on Ushesstya that Christ is supposed to scream until the end of the day” (village of Zamoshye, Elninsky district).
The performers of the troparion were predominantly women, those who in a given area had the privilege of singing calendar songs. They mostly sang in ensembles, but they could also sing solo (for example, during some kind of work). In the overwhelming majority of Smolensk villages, the singing of the troparion is denoted by the term Christ shout, which clearly reflects the manner of intonation, similar to the calendar: singing with a tense, loud sound: “On the street over there, we gather, we stand and shout “Christ is Risen” to the whole street, to the whole village. You can hear it from a distance! (village Bely Kholm, Glinkovsky district). In addition, there are popular terms to play, glorify, click, magnify, sing Christ. In some places the singing of the troparion is denoted by the verb kuralesit.
In this area, the troparion “Christ is Risen” organically entered into all the rituals of the Easter period, functioning in them in a manner similar to songs. Thus, the troparion was sung during Easter votive walks around courtyards, carrying icons around the courtyards of one or several neighboring villages throughout the Easter season. At the same time, the performers could be divided into two groups and alternately sing the troparion and volitional songs or two different versions of the troparion - male and female: “First, sing “Christ is Risen” three times, and then sing the valache “Christ walked the earth himself,” then again “Christ risen." All you have to do is sing “Christ is Risen” three times. It’s time to solder in the cemetery, and solder in the cemetery too! And on dvarah! They pay three times for valet labor” (the village of Bely Kholm, Glinkovsky district). “On Easter Sunday we had prayers with icons and sang “Christ is Risen.” They shared papalams: sometimes men, sometimes women. And just keep going, soldering all the time” (village of Zaluzhye, Kardymovsky district).
The troparion for Radunitsa was also active, the main event of which was a mass visit to the cemetery to remember the parents. Upon arrival at the cemetery, residents walked around it three times, singing the troparion “Christ is Risen,” after which they hung new homemade embroidered towels on the crosses, covered the graves with tablecloths, placed funeral food on them and had a meal. The troparion was also sung by a small group—their family—at the graves of relatives. “Previously, three times we walked around the cemetery on the memorial day and sang “Christ is Risen.” And this memorial day of the guardians is remembered - Radunitsa Radashnaya” (village of Zamoshye, Kardymovsky district). There is also recorded evidence of the singing of the troparion at a women’s festival on the day of the Myrrh-Bearing Women. In this case, the troparion opened the festivities.
Various ritual actions performed on Yegoryev's day were also accompanied by the singing of the troparion. Thus, in the Smolensk region, walking around a herd of cows on this day in a pasture or in a field was performed collectively by the owners of the livestock together with the clergy. The shepherd also took part in the round. During the round, they shouted for Christ, fired guns, and threw Easter eggs over the herd. “And they drive the cattle to Yagorye. It’s time to kick out Yagorya and sing Christ. So walk around the cattle and shout Christ” (the village of Staroe Selo, Safonovsky district). “One woman with an icon walks around the cattle, yeah. About five or six people walk and sing “Christ.” Already sing in two parts! We divide into two parties: we finish, these begin. No interruption! Pakudava make a circle. It’s an ancient sign that the cattle, they say, should walk together and not get loose” (Dubyo village, Demidovsky district).
The second Egoryevsk ritual complex is associated with the agricultural cycle. While walking around the fields with the icon, village residents sang various church prayers, special Yegoryev songs and the troparion “Christ is Risen.” The last time the wedge of life was walked around with the singing of the troparion was on the Ascension. The troparion “Christ is Risen” was included not only in the calendar, but also in occasional rituals performed during the Easter period, including causing rain, protecting crops from pests, etc. It was also performed at funerals and wakes during this time.
In all of these rituals, pagan and Christian ideas are intricately intertwined. The sound of the troparion “Christ is Risen” throughout the Easter period gives it the significance of a musical sign of the season along with calendar songs. In many rituals, the troparion was performed in parallel with calendar songs - vesnyanka, volochnye, spiritual, May. In a number of traditions, the troparion of Easter and the calendar song could be sung simultaneously: the performers were divided into two parts, one of which sang the song, and the other sang the troparion. This was called singing in earnest. Sometimes they sang in alternation, when the parts changed tunes while they sounded simultaneously.
All folklore versions of the troparion are focused on its everyday church melody. It sounds repeatedly at moments of worship specified by the charter. In almost every village, performers know not one, but two or even three of its tunes (in popular terminology, voices), distinguishing them as female and male, or church and village, or ordinary and according to the deceased. “It happened that all the people in Kansk shouted “Christ is Risen.” Let's talk about each other! But the words are all the same, but the motives are already different: a man is like a man, a man cannot sing with me! And I - on my, well, female one. And that’s it!” (village of Sadovaya, Dorogobuzh district). “They shouted at Christ in two voices: both in the village and in the church” (village of Mazovo, Elninsky district).
What distinguishes folk versions of the troparion from church chant is, first of all, polyphony. If a church chant is characterized by a harmonic relationship of voices, then in the folk interpretation the troparion sounds in a heterophonic texture, when all performers sing the same melody, varying it in different ways. This melody is focused on the bass voice part of a church chant. In folk versions, a unique interpretation of the mode, rhythm and melody of everyday chant is also evident. Melodically, the entire corpus of Smolensk folk versions of the troparion appears as a kind of kaleidoscope of tunes, in which various melodic and harmonic details can act as significant features.
In the folk tradition, as in the church tradition, the troparion is sung, as a rule, three times. But in some ritual situations (for example, when wearing icons), its sound fills a very long time of the entire ritual.
The canonical text of the troparion remains almost unchanged, except for its dialect pronunciation. In addition, choruses of folk origin can be added to it. For example:
Bright Resurrection, Ascension of God,
How can we chant you, magnify Christ God?
Four different texts of choruses were recorded in the Smolensk region.
The tradition of performing the Easter troparion outside the church is still alive in the Smolensk Dnieper region, although the number of situations of performance has decreased significantly. Records of folk versions of the troparion and conversations with Smolensk residents make it possible to reconstruct a bright, living picture of its functioning in this tradition even in Soviet times. All sound recordings of the Easter troparion are stored in the archives of the Problem Research Laboratory for the Study of Traditional Musical Cultures of the Russian Academy of Music. Gnesins.

Church troparia, history of appearance and dedication
In the early Church, troparia, and these were musical comments on the ongoing divine service, were written not in poetry, but in prose in a certain rhythm. The poetic form of this type of chant appeared at the end of the fourth century.
Troparion is a song that speaks about the essence of the holiday
Over time, church hymnography was filled with several types of troparions dedicated to a specific day, holiday, or saint. The voice leads the church hymns. The words of the troparion reveal the essence of the service or glorify the name of some saint.
Kontakion is an extended troparion in which the main theme is revealed more fully. The troparion sounds in songs, and the kontakion is performed in poetic form. Hearing church hymns, one can determine by their meaning what event or saint the service is dedicated to.
Read about the services:
- Divine Liturgy
- The rite of the priest

Roman Sladkopevets acquired the right to be considered the first author of church hymns, having gone through humiliating trials. Being a deacon of the church in Greece, deprived of hearing and voice, the pious young man was under constant ridicule of his brothers, they more than once pushed him to lead the songs, and this was a shame and new mockery.
Roman expressed his grievances in his nightly prayers to the Mother of God, and one day the Mother of God appeared to him in his cell with a scroll. She ordered the deacon to eat the scroll, after this night the young man became not only the best church singer with a unique voice, but also received the gift of writing hymns.
Advice! If you want to learn to sing, pray to Roman the Sweet Singer. He is the author of the first Christmas troparion, which is still performed today.
The Charter of the Church of Constantinople contains the first troparia written by Roman the Sweet Singer.
Venerable Roman the Sweet Singer
The troparion and kontakion are performed once on each patronal feast, only on Easter the “Christ is Risen” is repeated three times.

Troparion and Kontakion to Saint Sergius of Radonezh
Troparion, tone 4
Even an ascetic of virtues, as a true warrior of Christ God, you labored in great passion in the temporal life, in singing, vigils and fasting, and the image became your disciple: in the same way, the Most Holy Spirit dwelled in you, by whose action you are brightly adorned. But, as if you have boldness towards the Holy Trinity, remember the flock that you wisely gathered, and do not forget, as you promised, when you visited your children, O Reverend Sergius, our Father.
Kontakion, tone 8
Having been wounded by Christ’s love, O Reverend, and having followed that irrevocable desire, you hated all carnal pleasure, and like the sun of your fatherland you shone, thereby Christ enriched you with the gift of miracles. Remember us, who honor your blessed memory, and we call to you: Rejoice, Sergius the God-Wise.
PRAYERS TO REVEREND SERGIUS OF RADONEZH
First prayer
O sacred head, venerable and God-bearing Father Sergius, by your prayer, and by faith and love for God, and by the purity of your heart, you established your soul on earth in the monastery of the Most Holy Trinity, and was granted angelic communion and the visitation of the Most Holy Theotokos, and the gift of miraculous grace received, after your departure from the earthly, especially drawing closer to God and joining the heavenly powers, but not retreating from us in the spirit of your love, and your honest relics, like a vessel of grace, full and overflowing, left to us!
Having great boldness towards the all-merciful Master, pray to save His servants (names), the grace of His believers existing in you and flowing to you with love: ask us from our most generous God for every gift that is beneficial to everyone and everyone, the observance of immaculate faith, the establishment of our cities, pacification of the world, deliverance from famine and destruction, preservation from the invasion of foreigners, consolation for the afflicted, healing for the sick, restoration for the fallen, return to those who have gone astray to the path of truth and salvation, strengthening for those who struggle, prosperity and blessing for those who do good in deeds, education for the infant, instruction for the young, admonition for the ignorant. , for orphans and widows, intercession, departing from this temporary life to eternal life, a good preparation and parting words, those who have departed into blessed repose, and all of us, through your prayers that help us, on the day of the Last Judgment, be granted deliverance, and the gums of the country will be fellow members and hear that blessed voice of the Lord Christ: Come, blessed ones of My Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world.
Second prayer
O sacred head, Reverend Father, Most Blessed Abvo Sergius the Great! Do not completely forget your poor, but remember us in your holy and auspicious prayers to God. Remember your flock, which you yourself shepherded, and do not forget to visit your children. Pray for us, holy father, for your spiritual children, as if you have boldness towards the Heavenly King, do not remain silent for us to the Lord and do not despise us, who honor you with faith and love.
Remember us, unworthy of the Almighty Throne, and do not stop praying for us to Christ God, for you have been given the grace to pray for us. We do not imagine that you are dead, even though you have passed away from us in body, but even after death you remain alive. Do not retreat from us in spirit, keeping us from the arrows of the enemy, and all the charms of the devil, and the snares of the devil, our good shepherd; Even though your relics are always visible before our eyes, your holy soul with the angelic hosts, with disembodied faces, with the Heavenly Powers, standing at the Throne of the Almighty, rejoices with dignity.
Knowing that you are truly and alive after death, we fall down to you and we pray to you, to pray for us to the Almighty God for the benefit of our souls, and to ask for time for repentance, and for the unrestrained transition from earth to Heaven, the bitter ordeals of demons, air princes and be freed from eternal torment, and be an heir to the Kingdom of Heaven with all the righteous who have pleased our Lord Jesus Christ from all eternity. To Him belongs all glory, honor and worship, together with His Beginning Father, and with His Most Holy, and Good, and Life-Giving Spirit, now and ever, and unto the ages of ages. Amen.
Treya prayer
O heavenly citizen of Jerusalem, Reverend Father Sergius! Look at us ( names
) graciously and lead those who are committed to the earth to the heights of heaven. You are a mountain in Heaven; We are on earth, below, removed from you, not only by place, but by our sins and iniquities; but to you, as our kin, we resort and cry: teach us to walk in your way, enlighten us and guide us.
It is characteristic of you, Our Father, to have compassion and love for mankind: living on earth, you should not only care about your own salvation, but also about all those who come to you. Your instructions were the reed of a scribe, a cursive writer, inscribing the verbs of life on everyone’s heart. You did not only heal bodily illnesses, but more than spiritual ones, an elegant physician appeared, and your whole holy life was a mirror of all virtues. Even though you were so holy, more holy than God, on earth: how much more are you now in Heaven! Today you stand before the Throne of the Unapproachable Light, and in it, like in a mirror, see all our needs and petitions; You are together with the Angels, rejoicing over the one sinner who repents. And God’s love for mankind is inexhaustible, and your boldness towards Him is great: do not stop crying to the Lord for us.
Through your intercession, ask our All-Merciful God for the peace of His Church, under the sign of the militant Cross, agreement in faith and unity of wisdom, destruction of vanity and schism, affirmation in good deeds, healing for the sick, consolation for the sad, intercession for the offended, help for the needy. Do not disgrace us, who come to you with faith. Even though you are unworthy of such a father and intercessor, you, an imitator of God’s love for mankind, made us worthy by turning from evil deeds to good living. All God-enlightened Russia, filled with your miracles and blessed by your mercies, confesses you to be their patron and intercessor. Show your ancient mercies, and those whom you helped your father, do not reject us, their children, who are marching towards you in their footsteps.
We believe that you are present with us in spirit. Where the Lord is, as His word teaches us, there His servant will be. You are a faithful servant of the Lord, and I exist everywhere with God, you are in Him, and He is in you, and moreover, you are with us in body. Behold your incorruptible and life-giving relics, like a priceless treasure, may God grant us miracles. Before them, as I live for you, we fall down and pray: accept our prayers and offer them on the altar of God’s mercy, so that we may receive grace from you and timely help in our needs.
Strengthen us, the faint-hearted, and confirm us in the faith, so that we undoubtedly hope to receive all the good things from the mercy of the Master through your prayers. Do not cease to rule your spiritual flock, gathered by you, with the rod of spiritual wisdom: help those who struggle, raise up the weakened, hasten to bear the yoke of Christ in complacency and patience, and guide us all in peace and repentance, end our lives and settle with hope in the blessed bosom of Abraham, where you now rest joyfully after your labors and struggles, glorifying with all the saints God, glorified in the Trinity, the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Prayer to the Guardian Angel
Holy Angel of Christ, falling to you I pray, my holy guardian, given to me for the protection of my sinful soul and body from holy baptism, but with my laziness and my evil custom I angered your most pure lordship and drove you away from me with all the cold deeds: lies, slander , envy, condemnation, contempt, disobedience, brotherly hatred, and resentment, love of money, adultery, rage, stinginess, gluttony without satiety and drunkenness, verbosity, evil thoughts and crafty ones, proud custom and lustful indignation, driven by self-will for all carnal lust. Oh, my evil will, which even dumb animals cannot do! How can you look at me, or approach me like a stinking dog? Whose eyes, angel of Christ, look upon me, entangled in evil in vile deeds? How can I already ask for forgiveness with my bitter and evil and crafty deed, I fall into misery all day and night and at every hour? But I pray to you, falling down, my holy guardian, have mercy on me, a sinful and unworthy servant of yours (name), be me a helper and intercessor against the evil of my opponent, with your holy prayers, and make me a partaker of the Kingdom of God with all the saints, always, and now and ever and ever. Amen.
