Troparion, kontakion, magnification and prayer to the holy Venerable Alexander of Svirsky

Troparion from the Greek word means melody, tune.

Troparion is one of the church hymns that is performed at the Divine Liturgy. The troparion indicates the essence of a church holiday or glorification of saints.

Troparion

in Greek means melody or tune

There are different chants for different occasions in life. Troparions are sung daily at morning and evening liturgy

Previously, troparia were written in prose, and were intended to commemorate the holy martyrs who were glorified on one day or another

Nowadays, troparia have become paired chants that worshipers sing in chorus during worship. If anyone does not know the troparion of the holiday, then stand and listen.

On the feasts of the Mother of God

Troparion, tone 4

Let us now approach the Mother of God diligently, sinners and humility, and let us fall down in repentance calling from the depths of our souls: Lady, help us, having mercy on us, struggling, we perish from many sins, do not turn away and Your servants are vain, For You are the only hope of the imams.

Another troparion, same voice

We will never be silent, Mother of God, Your powers are unworthy to speak, and if You were not there to pray, who would save us from such troubles? Who would have kept them free until now? We will not retreat, O Lady, from You, for Your servants always save you from all evil ones.

Kontakion, tone 6

The representation of Christians is unashamed, the intercession to the Creator is immutable, do not despise the voices of sinful prayers, but advance, as the Good One, to the aid of us who faithfully call upon Ty; hasten to prayer and strive to supplicate, ever presenting the Mother of God to those who honor Thee.

Another kontakion, tone 6

We are not imams of other help, not imams of other hope, unless You, Lady, help us, we rely on You and we boast in You, for we are Your servants, let us not be ashamed.

Greatness

We magnify You, Most Holy Virgin, God-chosen Youth, and honor Your holy image, which brings healing to all who come with faith.

Features of the glorification genre

Works of this genre of church hymnography, as a rule, begin with the word “Glorify.” Only the general glorification of the Mother of God and the glorification of the monk (holy monk) have a different beginning. In the latter case, the chant begins with the word “We please.” Further, it is explained in poetic language why the sacred person is revered by Orthodox Christians. Her main spiritual “merits” are also mentioned.

There are generally accepted established texts of magnification for various categories of personalities revered in Christianity. For example, magnification of angels, prophets, apostles, saints, martyrs, etc. In honor of the Lord, the Mother of God, as well as the most famous saints, there are several variants of magnification. Usually they differ slightly from the standard ones.

The glorification of the Mother of God and saints in divine services

Magnifications are used in the services of some local Orthodox Churches. In Greek Orthodoxy the practice of singing hymns is absent. A similar term there refers to the choruses of some canons.

In the Russian Orthodox Church, magnifications are sung at matins on holidays following the polyeleos. Also, these solemn chants can be heard at the festive Divine Liturgy after the priest pronounces the dismissal (final blessing).

It is worth noting that greatnesses are often called “choruses.” This is due to the fact that they are used as refrains during the reading of the selected psalm. Magnifications can also be heard at prayer services, religious processions and during the transfer of holy relics. According to the Typikon (liturgical charter), the magnification is sung alternately by two choirs.

Hymns of such church genres as troparion, kontakion and magnification are often performed together, one after the other. Together they form a festive doxology. An Orthodox Christian can independently resort to it on the day of remembrance of a saint or holiday. Kontakia, magnification, as well as corresponding troparions to saints can be easily found in Orthodox prayer books and on thematic Internet sites.

Features of worship

After the Great Entrance and the Cherubic Song, the preparation of those praying for the offering of the Bloodless Sacrifice begins. In the litany of petition, parishioners pray together with the deacon for the offered Honest Gifts, for the temple and everyone who came to it with reverence, for deliverance from sorrow and need, for the protection and mercy of the Lord and the gift of a mentor and guardian of the soul in the person of an angel. So that the day is perfect, peaceful, holy and sinless, so that the Lord forgives grave sins and minor sins, all that is good and useful for the souls and all the world. At the end of the petitionary litany, we pray for a Christian death: peaceful, painless and not shameful. And about receiving a good answer at the Last Judgment.

During the litany of petition and after the placing of the Divine Gifts on the throne, the priest secretly reads the prayer of offering:

“Lord God Almighty, who alone is holy, accept the sacrifice of praise from those who call on You with all their hearts. Accept us, sinners, prayers and bring them to Your holy altar, and grant us the opportunity to offer You gifts and spiritual sacrifices for our sins and for human ignorance, and grant us to find grace before You, to be more favorable to You than our sacrifice, and to be indwelled by the Spirit Thy good grace is in us, and on those who bestow these Gifts, and on all Thy people.”

Then, loudly - so that all those praying in the temple can hear, the priest turns to God:

“By the bounty of Thy Only Begotten Son, with Him art Thou blessed, with Thy Most Holy and Good and Life-giving Spirit, now and ever, and unto ages of ages.”

The curtain on the Royal Doors is pulled back and the “air” is removed from the honest Gifts. The priest blesses all those praying in the temple:

- Peace to all.

The choir answers him on their behalf:

- And to your spirit.

Then the deacon calls on everyone to confess the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit in love and like-mindedness. And the entire temple chants the “Creed” - the most important prayer, which we will talk about in more detail next time.

Following the Divine Liturgy

Martyr

Troparion, tone 4

Thy lamb, Jesus, ( name

), calls with a great voice: I love You, my Bridegroom, and seeking You, I suffer and crucify myself and bury myself in Your Baptism and suffer for Your sake, so that I may reign in You and die for You, that I may live with you; but accept my name as an immaculate sacrifice, sacrificed to You with love. Through prayers, for the Merciful One, save our souls.

Kontakion, voice 2

Troparion, tone 4

Thy martyrs, Lord, in their suffering received incorruptible crowns from Thee, our God: for having Thy strength, I have overthrown the tormentors, crushed the demons of weak insolence; Save our souls with those prayers.

Kontakion, voice 2

Lamps of light appearing, Divine martyrs, illuminating all creation with the light of miracles, resolving ailments and always driving away deep darkness, constantly praying to Christ God for all of us.

Apostolic reading:

The first letter of the Apostle Paul to Timothy, chapter 1, verse 15 - 17

15 This is a true saying, and worthy of all acceptance, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, of whom I am the first. 16 But for this reason I received mercy, so that Jesus Christ in me first might show all long-suffering, as an example to those who will believe in Him for eternal life. 17 But to the King of the ages, the incorruptible, invisible, the only wise God, be honor and glory forever and ever. Amen.

The Troparion to Jesus Christ is sung during the first week of Lent

The troparion is performed at the Divine Liturgy.

This troparion is performed, for example, on the day of the triumph of Orthodoxy.

The establishment of this holiday is connected with the events of the Council of Constantinople in 843.

The Tsarina proposed to His Holiness Patriarch Methodius to gather all Orthodox metropolitans, archbishops, clergy, and laity to come to the Great Church of God with honorable crosses and holy icons on the first Sunday of Holy Lent.

This event is very important for the Christian people, therefore on this day, the first Sunday of Great Lent, the Orthodox Church solemnly celebrates the restoration of icon veneration, called the “Triumph of Orthodoxy.”

It is on this day that it is customary to perform the troparion to Jesus Christ.

Troparion to Jesus Christ , tone 2:

We worship Your most pure image, O Good One, asking for forgiveness of our sins, O Christ our God: by the will of Your flesh You deigned to ascend to the cross, so that You might deliver Him from the work of the enemy. Thus we cry out to You in gratitude: You have filled all with joy, our Savior, who came to save the world.

Reading the Gospel:

Gospel of Luke, chapter 18, verses 35 - 43

35 When He approached Jericho, a blind man was sitting by the road begging, 36 and when he heard that the people were passing by, he asked, “What is this?” 37 They told him that Jesus of Nazareth was coming. 38 Then he shouted: Jesus, Son of David! have mercy on me. 39 Those in front kept him silent; but he shouted even louder: Son of David! have mercy on me. 40 Jesus stopped and ordered him to be brought to Himself: and when he came to Him, he asked him: 41 What do you want from Me? He said: Lord! so that I can see the light. 42 Jesus said to him, “Look!” your faith has saved you. 43 And he immediately received his sight and followed Him, praising God; and all the people, seeing this, gave praise to God.

Priest Pavel (Velikanov) comments

Gospel of Luke, chapter 6, verses 17 - 23

17 And He went down with them and stood on level ground, and a great multitude of His disciples, and a great multitude from all Judea and Jerusalem and the seaside regions of Tire and Sidon, 18 who came to hear Him and to be healed of their diseases, and also those afflicted by unclean spirits ; and were healed. 19 And all the people sought to touch Him, because power came from Him and healed everyone. 20 And He lifted up His eyes on His disciples and said: Blessed are the poor in spirit, for yours is the kingdom of God. 21 Blessed are you who hunger now, for you will be satisfied. Blessed are you who weep now, for you will laugh. 22 Blessed are you when men hate you, and when they excommunicate you, and revile you, and call your name dishonorable, because of the Son of Man. 23 Rejoice in that day and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven. This is what their fathers did to the prophets.

History of the glorification genre

The origins of the genre of majesty are seen in the refrains to the 17th kathisma of the Psalter, sounded at the service of Holy Saturday. From historical documents it is known that these refrains were used in the Jerusalem church as early as the 8th century. Later, full-fledged cycles of similar refrains arose for other holiday services. Thus, in the 13th century, similar choruses for the Dormition of the Mother of God appeared. And in the 14th century - on the Beheading of John the Baptist.

In the 13th century, through the works of the Byzantine church leader Nikephoros Blemmides, a special genre of church hymnography arose - the chosen psalm. This is the name given to a selection of lines from Old Testament works, which is used to glorify New Testament personalities and holidays. Initially, the word “Alleluia,” which translates as “Praise God,” was used as a refrain to selected psalms. However, this exclamation was soon replaced by other refrains. They did not take root in the Slavic Orthodox Churches, so they were replaced by their own choruses of magnificence.

At the end of the 18th century, the first collection of greatnesses was published. Solemn chants, including the glorification of the Mother of God, were arranged in the collection in the order in which they are used in the church year.

Saints' Day

Venerable Anthony of Dymsky (1157 - 1224)

Listen to the short life of the saint, who imitated his heavenly patron Anthony the Great and wore an iron cap all his life for the sake of the memory of God on radio “Vera”.

Venerable Anthony of Chernoezersk (1598)

The Monk Anthony of Chernoezersk founded the Bogoroditsky Monastery on Black Lake in the Novgorod lands, not far from the city of Cherepovets. The time of local canonization is unknown.

More details

Presumably in the 16th century, Saint Anthony came to the shore of one of the Black Lakes, 40 versts northeast of Cherepovets and built a temple there. This is how the Mother of God of the Nativity Chernoezersky Monastery was founded.

The monk died in 1598 in his desert, his relics were hidden behind the right choir of the wooden church in honor of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary, built in 1839 on the site of an ancient chapel over the saint’s tomb (the foundation of the church has been preserved).

The day of remembrance of the Venerable Anthony of Chernoyezersk falls on January 30, according to the new style, for the sake of the namesake with his heavenly patron, the Venerable Anthony the Great. The existence of veneration of the saint is confirmed by the inclusion of the saint’s name in the Cathedral of Novgorod Saints, established around 1875, and the inclusion of his name in the Cathedral of Vologda Saints in 1841.

In the Resurrection Cathedral of Cherepovets, the image of St. Anthony of Chernoezersk from the 1840s has been preserved. On it the saint is depicted in full-length against the background of a forest and the Black Lakes, with a scroll in his left hand, his right hand blessing. The collection of the Cherepovets Museum contains an image of the saint from the beginning of the 20th century.
