The Origin of the Creed Prayer
The text contains 12 members, which means it is divided into parts. They all differ in content. Each part contains information about the foundations of the Church (dogmas). The prayer is quite long, so it is more difficult to remember, but this is not necessary. All 12 members consist of undisputed facts and dogmatic provisions that are distinguished by their brevity. As a result, you can remember each of the parts separately.
This form of prayer appeared when converts needed to briefly outline the essence of Christianity in general and Orthodoxy in particular. The Creed prayer is used for the baptism of a child and an adult. Previously, christenings were carried out when a person had already become an adult. Under this condition, it is advisable to familiarize him with Christian dogmas. In the modern world, this tradition is also returning - to baptize adults. For comparison, some time ago they sought to carry out baptism in infancy.
In adulthood, the process of churching occurs consciously. Common reasons for this:
- a series of troubles, misfortunes, numerous difficulties, apathy, depression against this background;
- finding the Lord as a source of light and goodness, such aspiration is not a consequence of some events (positive, negative).
A prayer is said
at baptism, as well as at liturgies.
The “Creed” confirms faith in God, which is why the text received its name. At the same time, a person accepts the Word of God as the only truth. The believer has no doubt that God is one, Almighty. This means that it unites (literally “contains”) everything that exists on earth.
Previously, new believers had to report that they had decided to join the Christian Church. To do this, it was necessary to contact the bishop, who designates the newcomer by anointing. It was required to apply a cross on the forehead. After this, he had to familiarize himself with the content of the dogmas of the church, find out on what faith is based.
At the training stage, a new believer must learn the basic provisions of church scripture. From this point of view, the person had a difficult job ahead of him. The Symbol of Faith prayer made the task easier; they began to study it in Russian and with accents much later. Initially, the text was presented only in Church Slavonic.
Earlier
The text “Creed” was read on the eve of Easter.
This ritual testified to a complete conversion to faith. Later, at a general congress of clergy (Ecumenical Council), it was decided to draw up a single version of the Creed for all directions of Christianity. After some additions, they decided to leave the latest version of the prayer unchanged; it was forbidden to make any additions.
The “Symbol of Belief” was put on sheet music. Now the prayer is not only read, but also pronounced in the form of a song at liturgies. Previous changes made it possible to create the most complete and understandable version of the prayer. Thanks to this, today anyone who seeks to convert to the Christian faith can study the meaning of the text.
Symbol of faith for the godfather
The godfather must know the Creed and read it at the sacrament of baptism at the appropriate moment.
I believe in one God the Father, Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth, visible to all and invisible. And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Son of God, the only begotten, who was born of the Father before all ages; Light from Light, true God from true God, born, uncreated, consubstantial with the Father, to Whom all things were. For our sake, man and our salvation came down from heaven and became incarnate from the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary, and became human. She was crucified for us under Pontius Pilate, and suffered and was buried. And he rose again on the third day according to the Scriptures. And ascended into heaven, and sits at the right hand of the Father. And again the coming one will be judged with glory by the living and the dead, His Kingdom will have no end. And in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the Life-Giving One, who proceeds from the Father, who with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified, who spoke the prophets. Into one Holy, Catholic and Apostolic Church. I confess one baptism for the remission of sins. I hope for the resurrection of the dead and the life of the next century. Amen.

The role of Ecumenical Councils
This was the name of the meeting of clergy from different churches of that time. The composition of the prayer dates back to the beginning of the 4th century AD. e. The fathers of the First and Second Ecumenical Councils took part. At the same time, discussions were held on the content of this prayer. When the first Ecumenical Council was convened, one of the text versions was adopted. After a few years, changes were made to create a single version of the prayer that would meet the requirements of different churches.
The Second Ecumenical Council dates back to 50-60. The meeting took place in Constantinople. The final version of the prayer was adopted at it, it was called the Nicene-Constantinopolitan Symbol of Belief. Another Ecumenical Council was held, but after 1 century - in the 30s. 5th century n. e.
At this meeting
it was stated that the latest version of the text would never be changed again.
The need to correct and supplement the dogmas of the first version of the prayer is due to the fact that the number of heretics (followers of a false belief in God) gradually increased. This is a consequence of incorrect interpretation of the foundations of the church, misconceptions, erroneous understanding of words and phrases written in Old Church Slavonic. As a result, a more perfect, dogmatically flawless version of the prayer was created. When reading it, erroneous interpretation of words and phrases of the text is minimized.
Moreover, initially there were fewer members - 7. They were drawn up and adopted at the first Ecumenical Council, prompted by the heretical teachings of the church fathers, based on the fact that Jesus Christ is not God, but is the highest creation of the Heavenly Father. The remaining 5 members of the prayer were added at the next Ecumenical Council. However, in this case, the reason for improving the text is different - heretical theories that refute the divinity of the Holy Spirit.
When a new trend appeared
baptism of infants, reading of prayer words began to be performed by: godmother, godfather.
This is a mandatory condition for joining the Church. Oral pronunciation of the text is required. For true Orthodox believers, reading the Creed prayer is a mandatory morning ritual. By repeating phrases frequently, you can quickly learn all 12 parts of the text.
Interpretation of the Creed Prayer
It is not enough to just read the text, you need to try to understand it. Considering that heretical teachings previously arose due to errors when trying to understand the meaning of the dogmas of the church, we need to be more careful in isolating the main thoughts that are embedded in all 12 members.
First member of the Creed
The prayer is read in full, but they begin to study the basics of church teaching from the first part. The main provisions it contains:
- God is a father, since he is the parent of Jesus Christ, and at the same time of all people;
- main idea: the Lord personifies love, on the basis of this statement the spiritual life of a Christian is built, and the 1st commandment is also defined (about love for the Lord Almighty);
- God is omnipotent, he is an all-perfect spirit, and therefore omnipresent, has no beginning or end;
- trust and love for the Heavenly Father are based on his love for mankind, and anyone who turns to him can receive help;
- Our Lord Almighty knows about everything that happens, he remembers the past, sees the present, knows the future, not a single little thing escapes him, changes in a person’s feelings, thoughts - everything is in full view;
- God is the Creator, he created everything that exists, living and inanimate (visible, invisible). Considering the complexity of the structure of the World, they assume the possibility of its appearance with the participation of the Higher Mind;
- thanks to the Wisdom of the Lord, the world continues to exist, everything that exists receives nutrition, the cycle of useful substances, water, and so on operates.
I believe in one God the Father,
Almighty,
Creator of heaven and earth,
everything visible and invisible.
Second Creed
This part contains information explaining the origin of Jesus Christ, the son of God. To understand this member of the Creed we need to know more about the Holy Trinity. This is the name given to the three faces of the Lord: Father, Son and Holy Spirit. They are consubstantial, each has its own properties. For example, the Father was not created or begotten - he is the source of all things. The Son is his incarnation in earthly form. The Spirit is a continuation of the Heavenly Father. The Lord speaks of himself in the plural (from the Old Testament).
The human mind cannot comprehend this secret. The Lord has different faces, but one name. Jesus Christ always talks about being the Son of God, and the holy spirit participates in illumination and revival. In an attempt to understand the essence of the Holy Trinity, various analogies are created, but all these theories do not have an evidence base.
And in one Lord Jesus Christ,
Son of God, Only Begotten,
Who was born of the Father before all ages;
Light from Light, true God from true God,
begotten, uncreated, consubstantial with the Father,
That's all it was.
Third Article of the Creed
The Heavenly Father sent down his incarnation (Jesus Christ) to save the human race. At the same time, the Holy Spirit took on human nature through the Virgin Mary. Conception occurred without the husband's seed, and therefore was called permanent. This action is a miracle from a human point of view, but for the Almighty there is nothing supernatural in this - the incarnation of one of the faces of the Lord took place. As a result, Jesus Christ forever united in himself 2 natures: divine, human.
for our sake
man and ours for the sake of salvation
came down from heaven and became incarnate
from the Holy Spirit and Virgin Mary
and becoming human.
Fourth Article of the Creed
This part of the prayer explains the essence of the cross in the form of a symbol. Baptism of a child, an adult, wearing a cross on the chest, performing the sign of the cross is veneration of the Lord in this form, since he sacrificed himself (his human incarnation) for the sins of people. The world then ceased to be righteous, the Heavenly Father foretold eternal death to all humanity. To avoid such consequences, he took upon himself the sins of people. As a result, subsequent generations were born from Christ, and not from the sinner Adam. The fallen nature of people was renewed, the children perceived a different program - a purer one, despised sin, followed the light of the Lord.
Crucified for us
Pontius Pilate,
and suffering
and buried.
Fifth Article of the Creed
In this case we are talking about the Resurrection of the Lord Jesus Christ. This is one of the foundations for believing in Christianity. Resurrection is a great event that personifies the renewal of human nature. This was facilitated by the death of Christ, after which he rose from the dead and ascended to God the Father. Thanks to such a sacrifice, the dead souls came out of hell at the resurrection of Jesus. The Son of God himself went there after death and preached there. Hell was then destroyed and souls were made/saved.
And resurrected in
third day according to Scripture.
Sixth Article of the Creed
To strengthen faith, the Lord stayed on Earth for the next 40 days. This was necessary so that the followers could verify the actual resurrection of Jesus. Then the ascension to Heaven took place.
And ascended to heaven,
and sitting at the right hand of the Father.
Seventh Article of the Creed
This speaks of the second coming of the Lord. However, this will pose a threat to humanity. If at his first coming Jesus appeared in peace to save humanity, then he will appear again to ask people for their sins. It is said that the date of this event is known only to the Almighty. As a result, the light will fade and the stars will disappear. Both the living and those who did not live to see this day will answer at the Last Judgment.
And again the coming with glory
judge the living and the dead,
His Kingdom will have no end.
Eighth Article of the Creed
This part of the prayer is about the Holy Spirit. He is life-giving, invisible to the human eye. But people could observe various phenomena that appear to be miracles. In fact, this is the incarnation of the Lord. The Holy Spirit is the Comforter in sorrows, he gives life through his invisible influence, imparts spiritual grace to people.
And in the Holy Spirit,
Lord, Life-Giving One,
Like those who come from the Father,
Like the Father and the Son, we worship and glorify,
spoken by the prophets.
Ninth Article of the Creed
In this case we are talking about the church. It is said that this structure is of Divine origin, as it was created by Jesus Christ. The word “Church” means a community consisting of people who are believers. This concept also includes the invisible force - the Saints, the Blessed Virgin Mary, Angels and Archangels. Those people who do not recognize the Church cannot have the Lord as their father. An important component are the sacraments; they must be observed in all traditions adopted back in the time of the Apostles.
In one
Holy, Catholic and Apostolic
Church.
Tenth Article of the Creed
The importance of the sacrament of baptism is considered. However, it can only be performed once. After excommunication, heretics are accepted into the community through repentance. The Baptism procedure is a mandatory stage of joining the Church of Jesus Christ. Without this, a person cannot enter into a new life. When undergoing the sacrament of baptism, rebirth occurs, as well as the death of the previous life (sinful).
I confess
one baptism
for the remission of sins.
Eleventh Article of the Creed
This part of the prayer speaks of the resurrection of the dead. This will happen before the Judgment of God, since the soul cannot exist separately from the body.
Tea of the resurrection of the dead;
Twelfth Article of the Creed
The promise of eternal life in bodies like Jesus'. It is said that the earth, like the sky, will be renewed. Diseases and suffering will disappear. The beauty of existence will not be equal to the new world. Here also lies the subject of the Christian’s faith - he hopes and expects the onset of a new life, which will come one day with the Lord.
and the life of the next century.
Amen.
Symbol of faith
The Creed is composed of the words of Holy Scripture. The Creed , or “I Believe ,” contains all the saving truths (dogmas) about the Holy Trinity and the Orthodox Faith. Text of the prayer in Russian
This prayer can be read in Russian; the prayer phrases in this case are pronounced like this:
“I believe only in this God the Father, the Almighty, the Great Creator of everything in the world around me, the Creator of everything in our world that is visible and invisible. I believe in only one Lord Jesus Christ, who is the Son of God, he is the only one, since he was born of the Heavenly Father before all times. This happened as Light from Light, true God from true God. He was begotten, not created, having everything in common with his Father. For us, people, the Son of God, for our salvation, came down from heaven and took on human form, being born from the Virgin Mary through the descent of the Holy Spirit on Her. Later, the Son of God was crucified for our sins under Pontius Pilate, and suffered terrible suffering on the cross. He suffered like all people and was buried. Witnesses of this, his believers, prayed. On the third day he rose again, as the Scripture says, and then ascended to Heaven, and now resides in the Kingdom of Heaven on the right side of God the Father. He has the right to come to earth again to execute judgment over the living and the dead. There will never be an end to the kingdom of God. I believe in the Holy Spirit, who comes from God the Father and gives life to everything around him, who is revered and glorified along with the Father and the Son, and who addresses people through the prophets. I believe in one Holy Catholic and Apostolic Church. I accept one Baptism, which allows me to receive forgiveness of sins. I look forward to the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the age to come. Amen".
My story of the Creed prayer. How I baptized a child
“I myself was baptized, and I converted to the Church as an adult, when I was ready for it. But they decided to baptize the child in infancy, soon after birth. Everything did not go according to plan, but in the end the son was baptized, there is a result, and this is the main thing. In the process, it turned out that we would not have a godfather, only the godmother remained. I thought it was impossible to carry out the procedure this way, but no, it turned out that it was possible.
Inna, 38 years old, Samara
For godparents, it is mandatory to read the Creed prayer. In our case, only the godmother pronounced it. There is nothing wrong with this, everything is fine with the child for 10 years now (he just turned yesterday). My son’s godmother still reads the prayer (shared information with me).”
