Cry to Our Lady
What should I pray to You for, what should I ask of You? You see everything, you know it yourself, look into my soul and give it what it needs. You, who have endured and overcome everything, will understand everything. You, who entwined the Baby in a manger and took Him with Your hands from the Cross, You alone know all the heights of joy, all the oppression of grief. You, who have received the entire human race as adoption, look at me with maternal care. From the snares of sin, lead me to Your Son. I see a tear watering Your face. It’s over me You shed it and let it wash away the traces of my sins. Here I have come, I’m standing, I’m waiting for Your response, oh, Mother of God, oh, All-Singing, oh, Lady! I don’t ask for anything, I just stand before You. Only my heart, poor human heart, exhausted in longing for truth, I throw at Your Most Pure feet, Lady! Let everyone who calls You reach the eternal day with You and worship You face to face.

Prayers to the Blessed Virgin Mary
First prayer O Most Holy Lady Theotokos! Raise us up, servant of God ( names
) from the depths of sin and deliver us from sudden death and from all evil. Grant us, O Lady, peace and health and enlighten our minds and the eyes of our hearts to salvation, and grant us, Thy sinful servants, the Kingdom of Thy Son, Christ our God: for His power is blessed with the Father and His Most Holy Spirit.
Second prayer Most Holy Virgin, Mother of the Lord, show me, the wretched, and the servants of God ( names
) Your ancient mercy: send down the spirit of reason and piety, the spirit of mercy and meekness, the spirit of purity and truth. Hey, Most Pure Lady! Be merciful to me here and at the Last Judgment. For you are, O Lady, the glory of heaven and the hope of earth. Amen.
The fourth prayer to the zealous, compassionate Intercessor of the Lord Mother! I come running to You, a cursed man and a sinner above all others: listen to the voice of my prayer, and hear my cry and groaning. For my iniquities have exceeded my head, and I, like a ship in the abyss, am plunging into the sea of my sins. But You, All-Good and Merciful Lady, do not despise me, desperate and perishing in sins; have mercy on me, who repent of my evil deeds, and turn my lost, accursed soul to the right path. On You, my Lady Theotokos, I place all my hope. Thou, Mother of God, preserve and keep me under Thy roof, now and ever and unto ages of ages. Amen.
Fifth prayer: The Most Holy Lady Theotokos, the only one who is purest in soul and body, the only one who surpasses all purity, chastity and virginity, the only one who has completely become the abode of the complete grace of the all-holy Spirit, the most insubstantial power here has yet incomparably surpassed the purity and holiness of the soul and body, look at me, vile, unclean , who has darkened my soul and body with the filth of the passions of my life, cleanse my passionate mind, make immaculate and order my wandering and blind thoughts, put my feelings in order and guide them, free me from the evil and vile habit of unclean prejudices and passions that torment me, stop every sin operating in me, grant to my darkened and damned mind sobriety and prudence to correct my attempts and falls, so that, freed from sinful darkness, I will be vouchsafed with boldness to glorify and sing songs of You, the only Mother of the true Light - Christ, our God; because you, alone with Him and in Him, are blessed and glorified by every invisible and visible creation, now, and always, and unto ages of ages. Amen.

The history of the appearance of the prayer “Cry to the Mother of God”
The Orthodox prayer book indicates exactly when the prayer with which in trouble and sorrow Christians turn to the Virgin Mary appeared. The author of the “Cry to the Mother of God” is considered to be the martyr Evgeniy Nikolaevich Poselyanin (real name Pogozhev).
Since childhood, this man was distinguished by a well-behaved and calm character; he devoted a lot of time to studying and reading spiritual literature. While studying at the Faculty of Law of Moscow University, Evgeniy Nikolaevich traveled to Optina Pustyn. Having become a spiritual disciple of Elder Ambrose, he received his blessing to write in defense of the faith and the Orthodox Church.
When the young student began publishing his first works on spiritual topics, he took the pseudonym Poselyanin. The villager dedicated the bulk of his works to the holy elders and companions of the faith. With the coming to power of the Bolsheviks, a difficult period began in his life: first he lost his job, and then was completely exiled to Eastern Siberia, from where he returned to St. Petersburg only in 1926. In 1930, he and several other church leaders were arrested, accused of counter-revolutionary activities, and on February 13, 1931 they were shot.
By decision of the Council of Bishops of the Russian Orthodox Church, Evgeniy Nikolaevich Poselyanin was canonized as a martyr; this happened in 1981.
January 30 is considered his memorial day.
The “Cry to the Mother of God” was first published in 1910 in the Orthodox magazine “Russian Monk” and has since been included in the 50 main prayers that protect women. However, the cry is uttered when ordinary prayers no longer provide peace; it is the last cry of despair of a person in dire life circumstances.

Prayers to the Blessed Virgin Mary
^ Virgin Mary, rejoice
Virgin Mary, Rejoice, full of grace Mary, the Lord is with You, Blessed are You among women and blessed is the Fruit of Your womb, for You have given birth to the Savior of our souls.
Video (click to play). |
Translation: Mother of God Virgin Mary, filled with the grace of God, rejoice! The Lord is with You; Blessed are You among women and blessed is the Fruit born of You, because You gave birth to the Savior of our souls.
The Mother of God is the one who gave birth to God. The words Hail, the Lord is with You, blessed are You among women, taken from the greeting of the Archangel Gabriel, when he announced to the Blessed Virgin Mary the birth of the Son of God from Her according to the flesh (Luke 1:28). The words Blessed are You among women mean that the Most Holy Virgin Mary, as the Mother of God, is glorified more than all other wives (Luke 1:42; Ps. 44:18). Graceful - full of grace, mercy from God. Blessed - glorified. The words blessed is the fruit of your womb taken from the greeting of righteous Elizabeth, when the Holy Virgin Mary, after the Annunciation, wished to visit her (Luke 1:42). The fruit of Her womb is the Son of God Jesus Christ.
History: The prayer is based on the greeting of Archangel Gabriel to the Virgin Mary at the moment of the Annunciation (Luke 1:28-31; Matthew 1:18-25). The famous “Ave, Maria” is the same prayer in Latin.
^ Worthy to eat
It is worthy to eat as truly the blessedness of Thee, the Mother of God, the Ever-Blessed and Most Immaculate and the Mother of our God. We magnify Thee, the most honorable Cherub and the most glorious without comparison, the Seraphim, who gave birth to God the Word without corruption.
Translation: It is truly worthy to praise You, Mother of God, eternally blessed and immaculate and Mother of our God. With honor higher than the Cherubim and incomparably more glorious than the Seraphim, who virginally gave birth to God the Word, the true Mother of God, we glorify You.
History: Read about the history of the prayer in the priest’s photo album. The name of the prayer is given to the Athonite icon of the Mother of God “Merciful”, in front of which a miraculous event took place (celebration on June 24).

Resolve my grievance, as if I were wrong: for I have no other help than You, no other Representative, no good Comforter, except You, O Mother of God! May you protect me and protect me forever and ever. Amen.
Translation: My Blessed Queen, My Hope, Mother of God, Shelter of orphans and wanderers, Protector, Joy of the grieving, Protector of the offended! You see my misfortune, you see my sorrow; help me as a weak person, guide me as a stranger. You know my offense: resolve it according to Your will. Translation: To You, the Supreme Commander, having been delivered from troubles, we, Your unworthy servants, Mother of God, sing a song of victory and gratitude. You, who have invincible power, free us from all troubles, so that we cry to You: Rejoice, Bride, who has not entered into marriage!

^ Song of the Virgin Mary
My soul magnifies the Lord, and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior. The most honorable cherub and the most glorious without comparison seraphim, without the corruption of God the Word, who gave birth to the real Mother of God, we magnify Thee. I have looked upon the humility of My servants, for from now on all my generations will bless Me. The most honorable cherub... I, the Mighty One, have done for Me greatness, and holy is His name, and His mercy from generation to generation to those who fear Him. Most honorable cherub... Open the power with Your arm, lavish the proud thoughts of their hearts. The most honorable cherub... Bring down the mighty from the throne, and lift up the humble; Fill those who hunger with good things, and those who are rich let go of their wealth. Most honorable cherub... In honor of Israel his youth, remember his mercies as a word unto our fathers, Abraham, and his seed, even unto the ages. The most honest cherub...
Translation: My soul magnifies the Lord, / and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior. With the highest honor of the Cherubim / and incomparably more glorious than the Seraphim, / who virginally gave birth to God the Word, / the true Mother of God, we magnify You. That He looked upon the humility of His Servant; / for from now on all generations will call Me blessed. That the Mighty One has done great things for Me, / and holy is His name, / and His mercy throughout all generations of generations is upon those who fear Him. He has done mighty things with His hand, / He has scattered the arrogant in the thoughts of their hearts. He deposed the rulers from their thrones / and exalted the humble, filled the hungry with good things / and sent away the rich with nothing. He supported His servant Israel, / remembering mercy, / as He said to our fathers, / to Abraham and his seed forever.
Explanation: The text of the chant is composed of the words spoken by the Blessed Virgin at the meeting with Her relative, the righteous Elizabeth, the mother of St. John the Baptist (Luke 1:46-55), with the addition of the refrain “More honorable than the cherubs...” to each verse, from which it received its second, most common name - “More honorable.” The Song of the Theotokos is part of the Matins service and precedes the 9th song of the canon.

What should I pray to You for, what should I ask of You? You see everything, you know it yourself, Look into my soul and give it what it needs. You, who have endured everything, overcome everything, will understand everything. You, who entwined the Baby in a manger and took Him with your own hands from the Cross, You alone know all the heights of joy, all the oppression of grief... You, who received the entire human race as adoption, Look at me with maternal care. From the snares of sin, lead me to Your Son.
I see a tear watering Your face. This is over me You shed it and let it wash away the Traces of my sins. So I have come, I am standing, I am waiting for Your response. O Mother of God, O All-Sung, O Lady! I don’t ask for anything, I just stand before You. Only my heart, poor human heart, Exhausted in longing for truth, I throw at Your most pure feet, Lady! May all who call upon You reach the eternal day through You.
And worship You face to face.
