Brief Life

Named Saul at birth, the future apostle was born in Tarsus (5-10 years old), received an excellent education and became a devout adherent of the Jewish party of the Pharisees. He hated the preachers of Christ and persecuted them in every possible way with the permission and approval of the Sanhedrin.

One day, on the way to Damascus, where he was supposed to capture Christians who had taken refuge there from persecution, Saul suddenly saw the sky lit up with a bright flash of light. The blind Jew fell in fear into the dust of the road and heard a voice that seemed to come from everywhere: “Saul! Saul! Why are you chasing me?” Shocked, Saul asked who was speaking to him and heard the answer: “I am Jesus, whom you are persecuting.”

The Lord commanded Saul to continue his journey, but with a different goal: instead of tormenting Christians, he was to become God’s mouthpiece and preach the truth among the pagans. Arriving in Damascus, Saul met with Ananias, the apostle “of the seventy,” who laid hands on the blind man and, by the will of God, he received his sight.

Having been baptized and henceforth called Paul, the former oppressor of Christians went to the synagogues of Damascus and fervently preached that Jesus Christ is the son of God.

Interesting fact

In total, Paul made four missionary trips during his life, during which he visited many countries of Asia Minor and the Balkan Peninsula. He visited Antioch, Phenicia, Syria, Cappadocia, Galatia, Lycaonia, Lycia, Phrygia, Athens, the islands of Patmos, Cyprus, Sicily, Rhodes and other lands.

From a persecutor he turned into the persecuted. His former comrades-in-arms, the Pharisees, took up arms against Paul, trying in every possible way to get his head. He was beaten with stones and sticks, put in prison, three times he was shipwrecked and languished from the hardships and deprivations of a wandering life: heat, cold, hunger and other adversities.

In addition, Paul was frail and frail in health and took his healer, the Evangelist Luke, with him everywhere, because he could not live without him. The Apostle Paul ended his earthly wanderings in Rome, where he was beheaded by court decision.

On the day of remembrance of the Apostle Paul, Pope Benedict XVI announced that for the first time in two thousand years, an examination of the remains of the saint, kept in a sarcophagus under the altar in the Basilica of San Paolo Fuori le Mura in Rome, was carried out.

According to the study, the remains belong to a person who lived around the 1st-2nd century, which, according to the pope, “confirms the unanimous and indisputable tradition according to which we are talking about the remains of the Apostle Paul.”

Around 1408, Andrei Rublev created the image of the Apostle Paul, which is considered canonical. On a golden background, symbolizing the Divine light, a man is depicted deeply lost in his thoughts. The saint's gaze is turned inward, as if the apostle listens to his own thoughts, not noticing anything around him.

Useful materials

The energetic outline of the figure, the pattern of folds of clothing, indicated by sharp lines, and the closedness of the silhouette evoke a feeling of inner strength and concentration. The apostle holds the Holy Scripture in his hands as the truth that he, the preacher, brings to the world.

Personalized icons depict Paul as bald, with a long dark beard, dressed in a blue tunic and a red himation - a cloak. Sometimes the book in his hands is replaced by a sword - the weapon with which he was executed. In an allegorical interpretation - a spiritual sword - the word of God, with which the saint cuts through unrighteous thoughts.

“For the word of God is living and active and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the dividing of soul and spirit, joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart” (Heb. 4:12), he says in Hebrews.

Very often, Paul is depicted on icons together with Peter, the other “supreme” apostle, for they both did a lot to plant the word of Christ on earth and dedicated their lives to Him. Even the day of their memory is the same - July 12 (new style), the day on which they died. (According to another version, Paul’s execution occurred a year later than Peter’s crucifixion).

Hagiographies of the Apostle Paul are also known. They are especially common in early Christian painting: on frescoes and mosaics in churches in different cities.
