The icon of the Life-Giving Source of the Mother of God dates back to the 5th century. It was then that, near Constantinople, a miraculous image with the help of a source was able to heal a blind man. This miracle could not go unnoticed, and after that, everyone knew about this diva by decree of Emperor Leo I, in honor of the miracle created, a temple was built not far from the divine source.

It is very difficult to name even an approximate number of people who were able to heal themselves in this temple. And soon lists began to be written from the image of a source standing nearby, which were then distributed throughout the world, giving Orthodox people healing and God’s grace.

The shrine itself depicts the Mother of God sitting in a font with little Jesus in her arms. From such a type as Nikopeia Kyriotissa (Lady Victorious) comes the iconography of this face of the Mother of God. From the very beginning, the source was not painted on the shrine, but later the Vial (bowl) was also included in the overall composition. And later they began to depict a pond and a fountain on the shrine.

There is another meaning for the name of the Holy Face. So, in the 5th century. In Constantinople, not far from the Golden Gate, there is a source of water, it was considered miraculous. He met a blind man at a spring and decided to help him - he took him out onto the path and wanted to give him water. Soon I heard a voice that told me where to look for the source. And at the same time he ordered to put mud from the same place on the blind man’s eyes. The voice said that in the future a small temple would be built here in his honor, and parishioners would receive healing from illnesses in it.

He went to Constantinople to announce to everyone about the miracle that had happened. Later, when Leo, being an emperor, remembered the prediction, he decided to cleanse the source of water. He ordered to enclose him in a stone circle. A temple was erected here. At the same time, the spring received the name “Life-Giving”.

Over the years of its existence, the temple was destroyed several times, it was rebuilt, but soon new attacks and devastation occurred. However, the church was built again, and since then people have come to the source from different countries. There are many known cases of healing thanks to him.

Today, lists of the icon of the Mother of God “Life-Giving Spring” are located in various holy places: the Moscow Novodevichy Monastery, the Sarov Desert, the Vyatka Diocese, a chapel next to the Solovetsky Monastery, the Arzamas Deanery District, the Intercession-Tervenichesky Monastery (the chapel nearby, the village of Tervenichi, Leningrad region) , Kislovodsk Chapel. This is one of the longest texts. They turn to the Mother of God as the one who is higher than the Saints and Angels, the helper of the deprived, the comforter of the sad, the protector of the weak. She heals the sick, feeds the hungry, clothes the naked, and is entirely the intercessor of the small and the great.
