Metropolitan Vladimir (Kotlyarov), who was in retirement, passed away to the Lord


Russian Orthodox Church

Born on May 27, 1929 in Aktyubinsk, Kazakhstan, in the family of a deacon.

After graduating from the Dzhambyl Statistical College in 1948, he entered the Moscow Theological Seminary, from which he graduated in 1952.

Since August 1952, he served as a psalm-reader at the St. Nicholas Cathedral in Almaty.

On May 22, 1953, he was ordained to the rank of deacon, and on May 24, to the rank of priest.

In 1953 he entered the correspondence sector, in September 1954 he was transferred to the in-patient department of the Leningrad Theological Academy, from which he graduated in 1958 with a candidate of theology degree. In 1959-62. taught liturgics at the LDS, then - at the LDS and LDA the Holy Scriptures of the Old Testament.

In February 1962, he was tonsured a monk and appointed deputy head of the Russian Spiritual Mission in Jerusalem.

In 1962 he was elevated to the rank of archimandrite.

In October 1962, as an observer from the Moscow Patriarchate, he attended the meetings of the Second Vatican Council in Rome.

On November 29, 1962, he was appointed representative of the Moscow Patriarchate at the World Council of Churches in Geneva with the rank of bishop.

On December 30, 1962, he was consecrated Bishop of Zvenigorod, vicar of the Moscow diocese.

On March 30, 1964 he was appointed to the Voronezh and Lipetsk Sees, on February 15, 1965 - to the Podolsk Sees with the post of permanent representative of the Patriarch of Moscow to the Patriarch of Antioch in Damascus.

On November 19, 1966 he was appointed Bishop of Kirov and Slobodsk, on October 7, 1967 - Bishop of Berlin and Central Europe, Patriarchal Exarch in Central Europe.

On October 20, 1967, he was elevated to the rank of archbishop.

Since the end of 1970 - manager of the Rostov and Novocherkassk diocese, from May 31, 1973 - Irkutsk and Chita, from April 17, 1975 - Vladimir and Suzdal, from April 24, 1980 - Krasnodar and Kuban, from May 12, 1987 - Pskov and Porkhov.

On February 25, 1992 he was elevated to the rank of metropolitan.

On February 23, 1993, he was again appointed to the Rostov department.

On December 27, 1995, he was appointed administrator of the St. Petersburg and Ladoga diocese and a permanent member of the Holy Synod.

Since 2002 - honorary member of the St. Petersburg Theological Academy.

By the decision of the Holy Synod of March 12, 2013 (magazine No. 16), he was appointed head of the St. Petersburg Metropolis.

By the decision of the Holy Synod of March 19, 2014 (journal No.8) was retired. The Synod determined the Holy Trinity Alexander Nevsky Lavra to be its place of residence. The Synod also decided to grant His Eminence the position of honorary rector of the Church of the Vladimir Icon of the Mother of God in St. Petersburg with the receipt of the corresponding content.

He reposed in the Lord on January 19, 2022. The funeral service took place on January 21 in the Holy Trinity Cathedral of the Alexander Nevsky Lavra. The bishop was buried in the Nikolskoye cemetery of the Lavra.
