Among the large number of saints who are worshiped, there are those who have received a special place. Many people read prayers to Saint Oleg of Bryansk. He is recognized as a special example of the pursuit of an angelic lifestyle. In addition, he was a descendant of the famous pious prince Mikhail of Chernigov.

Life of a Saint

In the 13th century, Rus' suffered from invasions by hordes of hordes. Destruction, theft, abandoned lands - all this became symbols of that era. Many riches were stolen, but the only thing that could not be destroyed was faith. Everyone noted that the death of everything on earth was the work of humanity.

But believers know that the Lord will help them overcome everything. Constant strengthening of faith allows you to overcome any suffering. At that time, Mikhail Chernigovsky was actively engaged in preaching activities. He and all his descendants tried to bring the word of God to everyone. There are special references to the life of Saint Prince Oleg of Bryansk.

The first mention of it dates back to 1274. It talks about the fact that together with his father he took part in the confrontation with Lithuania. When everything calmed down, he spent some time with his sister. All his life he observed how fleeting everything was, and decided to refuse the inheritance. At his own expense, he created the Petro-Paul Monastery in Bryansk, and over time became a monk there named Vasily.

There is no exact date, but there is information that he died there in 1331. Then they buried the body under the cathedral church.

What does Saint Oleg Bryansky help with?

People constantly turn to him with many requests. An image with his image can be found in almost any holy place.

Since he is considered an example of humility, people turn to him for:

  • calming carnal lust;
  • getting rid of pride;
  • eliminating vanity;
  • returning the lost to faith.

But it is worth remembering that it is not the faces of the saints that fulfill our requests, but our faith. If we do not show proper attitude towards the saints and God, then none of our requests will be heard. Here is the text of the most popular prayer to the saint.

“Oh, reverend father, blessed Prince Olezh, zealous servant of Christ, warm prayer book to the Lord, protector in troubles and tireless comforter in sorrows! Look, most blessed one, mercifully at your city and see your children humbly falling down and wanting to serve you. Do not reject those who require your help, but as a benefactor and intercessor, pray ever since the Lord God and our Savior Jesus Christ may bless the Russian country, preserving it in peace and good faith, multiplying its cities, preserving His property. Offer up, our God-bearing Father, this small prayer of your unworthy servants to the Master Christ, may the living spirit of right faith and love, unshakable piety, Christ-consistent wisdom be established in the Holy Orthodox Church, may the shepherds be granted zeal for the salvation of people, to enlighten the unbeliever and guide the erring convert and attract those who have fallen away. Rather, let all the children of the Orthodox Church remain pure from worldly temptations, carnal lusts, superstition, superstitions and enemy obsessions. To her, saint of God, do not despise us who pray to you, but help us with your speedy intercession, so that having escaped all troubles, misfortunes and sorrows in this temporary life, we will find a shameless death, and thus having lived on earth pleasing to God, we will be worthy of heavenly life in heaven, where together with you we will glorify the love of mankind and generosity in the Trinity of the glorified God, the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, forever and ever. Amen."

Reverend Oleg (monastically Vasily) Romanovich of Bryansk, prince

Service to the Venerable and Righteous Prince Oleg of Bryansk

The text of the service was approved by the decision of the Holy Synod of July 14, 2018 (magazine No. 61)
of the month of Septemvri on the 20th day

At Great Vespers

In the Lord, I cried: stichera on 8, tone 2:

Come, Orthodox cathedrals, / let us praise the warm intercessor of the Bryansk land, / the venerable prince Oleg, / who loved Christ God from childhood, / who fulfilled His commandments by works of faith, / who established monastic residence within the boundaries of Bryansk, / and who showed us an image of virtue, / who celebratoryly honor the holy memory his.

The race of the righteous will be blessed, / the speech of the righteous David. / In the same way we magnify today the blessed Prince Oleg, / the vegetation of the pious root of the princes of Chernigov: / St. Nicholas the Saint and Igor the Passion-Bearer, / the Martyr Michael and the blessed Roman, / the relative of the Venerable Euphrosyne of Suzhdal. / With them now pray, Rev., / about the salvation of our souls.

When disaster befell the Russian land/ and the Hagaryan hordes devastated it,/ then, more than visible, you went out against invisible enemies/ and on the prayerful guard of your Fatherland you became,/ blessed Prince Olezh,/ lifting up your venerable hand to God,/ who alone can save/ and I will save our souls.

First, in a humble heart, you created an abode for God, O Reverend, / after which you founded the abode of the supreme apostles in the city of Bryansk, / where, having labored well in monastic labors, / you left your honorable relics to us, / with your soul now rejoicing in the abodes of the Heavenly Father, / remember those who praise you with faith and love.

God-wise, the first creator of the Peter and Paul Monastery, / having exchanged the princely scarlet for a hair shirt of monastic liberty, / you bore the spiritual sword wisely, / affirming Orthodoxy and cutting off all that was harmful to the soul, / you served your neighbors and brethren in the image of Christ, / and do not cease to ever cover / the city of Bryansk and your abode.

Glory, voice 8.

Similar to: Oh , glorious miracle:

Reverend Prince Olezh, / champion of the Orthodox faith, / true preacher of piety / and a well-known rule of monks, / how did you despise the glory of this world / and follow Christ on the narrow path? / Likewise, the Lord gave you to us / in sorrows, a quick helper / and a prayer book of warmth about our souls.

And now, a holiday.

Entrance. Prokeimenon in the afternoon. Readings three reverend.

At the litia stichera, tone 2:

Come, faithful people, / to the monastery of the venerable Prince Oleg / and, the spiritual face formed, let us cry out to you: / Rejoice, our praise and hope, / and the land of Bryansk, a fragrant sacrifice to God, / pray for all to abide in peace, / who Orthodoxy honor your holy memory .

An image of piety,/ in the reign of a merciful ruler,/ a representative of widows and orphans,/ a nourisher of the poor and a comforter of the sorrowful,/ the rule of monks and chastity taken away,/ the god-wise Oleg is praised./ For having multiplied God-given talents for good,/ to the joy of his Lord below/ and boldly prays for our souls.

Glory, voice 8:

Living piously on the earth,/ you looked into the Mountain,/ God-blessed Olezh,/ now from the heights of Heaven, look down on us,/ calling you with love,/ and fight with your prayers,/ ask our army for victory against the adversaries,/ your city and protect the monastery you created from sorrows and cruel troubles, / our zealous and quick helper of prayer.

And now, a holiday.

On the poem there are stichera, tone 4:

For the sake of the worldly vanity of Christ, I renounced, / the first monastery in the land of Bryansk / in the name of the supreme apostle you founded, / the blessed Prince Olezh, / because, like the cornerstone of the Orthodox faith, which has appeared, / on which it is still firmly established, / we defeat the machinations of the enemy through your intercession.

Verse: Honorable before the Lord is the death of His saints.

Your honorable relics, Reverend Prince Olezh, / in the time of godless persecution / were preserved under cover from desecration, / now again on the candlestick of your monastery, / like a rich treasure, they appeared to us, / sanctifying and illuminating with grace-filled help / those who flow to them with faith.

Verse: Blessed is the man, fear the Lord, / He will greatly delight in His commandments.

From your youth, you acquired a God-enlightened mind/ by reading Divine words and the writings of the fathers,/ you learned to imitate the feat of the saints,/ the teaching of truth is like drinking,/ doing the commandments is like having spiritual food,/ and you now enjoy the Immortal meal.

Glory, voice 6:

The glory of this corruptible world/ having irrevocably rejected,/ for the salvation of people entrusted to you by God,/ you were sick with a fatherly heart,/ with warm prayer/ calling on the mercy of God/ and not pleasing yourself,/ you bore the burdens of your neighbors apostolically./ In the same way, you are worthily glorified,/ Olezha is ever-memorable.

And now, a holiday.

Troparion, tone 8:

From your youth, having loved Christ with all your heart, reverend, / you left earthly glory, as if it were passing away, / and considered the kingdom of the earth to be nothing, / you joyfully became a monk, / and you illuminated the city of Bryansk with many labors, like the sun: / with this Having been an adornment of the Trinity, / pray to Prince Olezh, Christ God, / to save our souls.

Troparion, same voice:

From your youth, having loved Christ with all your heart, reverend,/ you forsook earthly glory, as if it were passing away,/ and, having considered the kingdom of the earth as nothing,/ you joyfully joined the face of the monks,/ and, having acquired through many deeds the grace of the Holy Spirit,/ the city of Bryansk, like the sun, is bright You have illuminated us./ Pray the same, Prince Olezh, Christ our God,/ to save our souls.

At Matins

According to the 1st verse of the sedalens, tone 7:

Having fought a good fight, / a vessel filled with the grace of God, you appeared, O Reverend Prince Olezh. / In the same way, the crown of righteousness is prepared for you from the hero of Christ our God. / We, your children, honoring your holy memory with love, call with tenderness: / praying for us, Holy One of God, / may we purify our souls with tears of repentance / and may we gain boldness on the day of terrible testing.

Glory, and now, to the holiday.

According to the 2nd verse of the Holy Sedal, tone 8:

Having ended the course of earthly goodness, / you have kept your faith immaculate, Saint Olezha, / God glorified you in miracles, / pray to Him to grant us forgiveness of sins, / victory for our army against our enemies, / liberation for the captives, peace for the world, / and unity for Christians in Orthodoxy.

God's powers on earth have risen greatly.

According to the polyeleos sedalene, voice 4:

Show off and rejoice, land of Bryansk, / and let your children play in you, / brightly triumphant in the memory of the Reverend Prince Oleg, / our common father and prayer book, / for he consoles all who flock to him / and confirms them in piety.

The canon of the saint, tone 4, its borderline: We honor the protector of the land of Bryansk with faith.

Song 1

Irmos: Seas of the dark abyss / with damp feet / ancient Israel walked, / with the cruciform hand of Moses, / defeated the power of Amalek in the desert.

Chorus: Holy blessed Prince Olezha, pray to God for us.

Protector of the warm Bryansk land, praise of the princes and fertilizer of the monks, let us sing the praises of the Venerable Oleg, for by the power of the Cross he defeated passions and incorporeal enemies.

You lived like an angel on the earth, Prince Olezh, for the good of the roots of the princes of Chernigov you were a fruitful branch, and as the governor of the Heavenly King, you are now protecting our Fatherland.

Imitating the humility of the King of Kings, you imputed the power and honor, glory and wealth of Christ for your own sake, and drowned Belial’s pride with fasting tears.

Theotokos: Knowing that Thy Pechersk image was brought into the boundaries of Bryansk and the healing of his parent from blindness was in vain, Prince Oleg glorified Thy grace, Most Pure.

Song 3

Irmos : Your Church, Christ, rejoices in You, calling:/ You are my strength, Lord,/ and refuge, and confirmation.

Thou hast established the land and thy people in the Orthodox faith, O Reverend, through good reign and monastic deeds.

You founded the first monastery in the land of Bryansk, Saint Olezh, as the cornerstone of faith, in the name of the apostle of the supreme ones.

You have appeared in the newly planted fields, a zealous worker, O blessed one, and thus we are sanctified to this day by the fruits of your labors.

Theotokos: And a source of healing near the Svenya River opened a miraculous icon of the Mother of God. Even though we are strengthened by grace, Prince Oleg of course left the world to eat.

Kontakion and Ikos of the holiday, tone 4.

Sedalen of the Saint, tone 8:

Having humbly departed from the earthly kingdom, you were given the royal name to another community, Prince Olezh, as a sign of the Heavenly Kingdom prepared for you, where now, like a royal priesthood, you proclaim the virtues of Christ God, Who called you into His wonderful light.

Glory, and now, to the holiday.

Song 4

Irmos: Having seen the Church on the Cross, / the Righteous Sun, / a hundred in its rank, / worthily crying out: / glory to your power, Lord.

You have rejected your cross, yourself and the world, O Reverend, and you have overcome all the machinations of the enemy by the power of Christ who loved you.

Hagaryan of old, you repelled the presence of the evil-believers more than the sword with prayer, and now you have delivered our Fatherland from the evil ones through your intercession.

The land of Bryansk is adorned with a tree planted by you along the outgoing waters of Orthodoxy, feeding us and covering us.

Theotokos: When the monks created by you, prince, brought the icon of the Most Pure One from Kiev to the holy monastery, then Her power appeared in miracles.

Song 5

Irmos: You , Lord, are my Light,/ you have come into the world,/ the Holy Light,/ turning from the darkness of ignorance/ those who sing of You through faith.

We call the two-edged sword of God you, holy one, who is harmful to the soul, for you cut: in reign with good faith, in monasticism with reverence.

Your face was illuminated at the hour of your death, blessed Olezha, and like a good servant and faithful one you entered into the joy of your Lord.

You deliver from troubles in the night of those wandering more sinfully, holy, meek star of the church sky and a guide to the Never-Evening Light.

Theotokos: Blessed Lady, enlighten us with the light of Your Son, like the ancient eyes of the blessed Prince Roman.

Song 6

Irmos: devour Thee with a voice of praise, O Lord, / The Church cries out to Thee, / having been cleansed from the blood of demons, / for the sake of mercy from Thy side / with the flowing Blood.

The Russian Church today calls everyone to praise the saint of Christ, the Reverend Prince Oleg, who has risen from the land of Bryansk to our Fatherland.

You appeared, Reverend Olezh, the rule of the Orthodox faith, an image of a monk, a warm representative for the people, a fence for your city and monastery.

You have received the Heavenly inheritance and miracles of grace, reward from God, Saint Olezha, and do not cease to mercifully visit those who honor you.

Theotokos: Having seen the miraculous appearance of the Mother of God from the Viennese icon, the blessed one, together with your father, the consecrated cathedral and many people, sent thanks to God.

Kontakion, voice 2:

Warm intercessor of the Bryansk land, / Reverend Prince Olezh, / together with your saints, / now standing before the Throne of God, / establish Orthodoxy with your prayers, / destroy heresies and schisms, / give peace to our Fatherland, / and obtain what is useful to our souls.

Ikos:

Open your honest mouth, O noble Olezhe, and secretly speak in the ear of our hearts: how, jealous of the labor of Equal-to-the-Apostles Vladimir, did you found the monastery of the supreme apostles in the city of Bryansk? Why, being like St. Nicholas the Saint and Igor the Passion-Bearer, have you rejected the world? How, following your great-grandfather Michael, did you experience bloodless martyrdom in monastic labors and inherit the piety of your parent? Oh, the red color of the tree of the great Russian princes! With your prayers, establish Orthodoxy in our land, destroy heresies and schisms, obtain peace for our Fatherland and benefit our souls.

Song 7

Irmos: In the cave of Abraham, the youths of the Persians, / with the love of piety more than with flame, were scorched, crying out: / Blessed art thou in the temple of Thy glory, O Lord.

You left your reign and clan, burning with the fire of God’s love and striving hard in the rank of monasticism, the blessed one. Even now you rejoice at the faces of the saints.

Pray for deliverance from the fiery lake of the Lover of Mankind, O Reverend God, who honors your holy memory with love and imitates your virtue.

Like gold with fire, having tempted soul and body with abstinence and prayer, reverend, in the purple of purity you have settled above the passions.

Theotokos: In all the surrounding lands, when Prince Roman saw the healed eyes, he gave Thy monastery, O Lady, and offered his son as a sacrifice to Thy Son.

Song 8

Irmos: hand to the gaping lions in the den; quenching the fiery power, girded with virtue, zealots of piety, youths, crying: bless all the works of the Lord, the Lord.

You were so great in your Orthodox reign, so much so that in your monastic work you humbled yourself, Reverend Olezh, and God exalted you and bestowed grace on you for miracles.

You showed great zeal for piety, being adored by the image of people and your disciple, from infancy having been brought up in the law of the Lord, through all your life you tried to fulfill the will of God.

Thin garments do not darken the virgin beauty of your soul, blessed one, but enlighten your spiritual vigil and your eyes and subdue your hard work to your spirit.

Theotokos: And from ancient times you chose this mountain in the borders of Bryansk as a monastery and you sanctified it with your Svensky image, Most Immaculate, keeping it unharmed, so that the Name of Your Son may be sung in it forever.

Song 9

Irmos: To the uncut stone/ from the uncut mountain, You, Virgin,/ the cornerstone was cut off, O Christ,/ the aggregate of the dispersed nature./ Thus, joyfully, we magnify You, the Mother of God.

Rejoicing in the hope of future blessings, you walked the narrow and sorrowful path, but having learned abstinence, meekness, humility and obedience, you joined the ranks of the saints.

Having loved a hard-working life according to God from your youth, O Reverend Prince, you have reached the measure of the age of Christ and, like a mature class, you have entered the heavenly granaries.

Imams, your holy relics, God-bearing prince, as an inexhaustible treasure and great consolation to our souls and bodies, we magnify you with the same.

Theotokos: Most Pure Mother of God, through the prayers of the Reverend Prince Oleg and his saints, save the Russian land and comfort Your faithful people, who honor You worthily.

Svetilen:

Having matured towards God, you escaped eternal darkness, Reverend Prince Olezh, for this sake, at the hour of death, your face was enlightened, and your honest relics shine with incorruption and miracles to this day.

Glory, and now, to the holiday.

On the praises of the stichera, tone 5:

Reverend Prince Olezh, / Glorious praise to the Russian Church, / the invincible wall of the city of Bryansk, / a strong fence of our Fatherland, / you, with godly and good deeds / you shone on the candlestick of your reign / and, although you were perfect in being, / you rejected yourself and the world / and You have reached the Kingdom of Heaven.

“Praise be to the good-doing God,” / you said, O holy Olezh, / lying on your deathbed, / I already see the shore of the sea of life, / where my fragile boat has been carried hitherto. / Thus, your face was enlightened with Heavenly joy / and the sorrow of the disciples was dissolved with this consolation. / We But with the eyes of faith we see the imperishable beauty of your soul, / we sing praise to you.

God-bearing Father Olezh, / blessed is your city and the monastery you created, / where you deigned to strive / and after death you left your holy relics, / falling to them, we earnestly pray to you: / do not depart from us in spirit, / overcome those who are fighting us visible and invisible enemies, / may we always praise God for you.

Glory, voice 6:

Like the dawn of the morning / in the land of Bryansk you rose, / Reverend Olezh, / the adornment of the Russian princes, / you died in two evangelical fields, / in the reign of good faith, / in monasticism with reverence, / therefore you received a special crown from the Lord, / He is warm pray for our souls.

And now, a holiday.

Prayer

Oh, reverend father, blessed Prince Olezh, zealous servant of Christ, warm prayer book to the Lord, protector in troubles and tireless comforter in sorrows! Look, most blessed one, mercifully at your city and see your children humbly falling down and wanting to serve you. Do not reject those who require your help, but, as a benefactor and intercessor, pray ever to the Lord and God and our Savior Jesus Christ, that He may bless the Russian land, preserving it in peace and prosperity, multiplying its cities, preserving His wealth. Offer, O God-bearing Father, this small prayer to the Lord Christ, that the living spirit of right faith and love, unshakable piety, wisdom dissolved in meekness, may be established in the Holy Orthodox Church; may the shepherds be given zeal to care for the salvation of people, to enlighten the unbelievers, to instruct those who have gone astray, to convert and attract those who have fallen away; Moreover, may all the children of the Orthodox Church be pure and preserve them from worldly temptations, carnal lusts, superstition, superstitions and enemy obsessions.

To her, saint of God, do not despise us who pray to you, but help us with your speedy intercession, so that, having escaped all troubles, misfortunes and sorrows in this temporary life, we will meet a shameless death and, having lived on earth pleasingly to God, we will be worthy of heavenly life in Heaven, where together with you we will glorify the love of mankind and generosity in the Trinity of the glorified God, the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, forever and ever. Amen.

Menea. September 20th. Holy Blessed Prince Oleg of Bryansk

Holy face

Most often, those who bear the same name are advised to purchase and have in their home an icon of St. Oleg of Bryansk. But this is not at all a necessary condition. It is believed that she will always accompany and help in any endeavor of her owner. They send their prayers to her in any difficult life situations.

In Bryansk, she is considered a patron, a symbol and a local shrine. It is recommended to turn to it in situations where a person’s faith has been shaken or he doubts the correctness of Orthodox dogma. Its effect is also aimed at giving peace to the soul, distraction from the unnecessary vanity of modernity.

Holy places

Throughout Russia and beyond its borders there are shrines where this saint is honored. Here are the ones that are most often mentioned:

  • chapel in the village of Khotenka in the Kaluga region;
  • church in Krasnoyarsk;
  • temple in Pyatigorsk;
  • holy place in Kyiv and others.

The most prominent representative is the temple of Oleg Bryansky in Novosibirsk. It is located in the Oktyabrsky district of the city. It was consecrated on June 24, 2013, and then a couple of days later the bishop’s consecration took place. It was conducted by Vladyka Tikhon himself. All information about its work, services and other things can be found on the Internet on the monastery website. O. V. Shabunevich played a major role in its emergence. Initially, he donated a plot for him, and for the day of consecration he brought an icon of the saint with part of his relics.

Relics of Saint Oleg

As already mentioned, he was first buried under the temple, where he spent the last time of his life. At the beginning of the 1930s, it was decided to rebury him to prevent abuse. They were placed under the altar of the Church of the Presentation of the monastery. Everyone who took part in this process gave a promise of secrecy. It was only in 1995 that information was released. Since August 10, 1995, the relics have become available in the Vvedensky Church of the Peter and Paul Monastery. Near them, a farewell prayer service is held for the new soldiers of the city.

In 2013, His Holiness Patriarch Alexy of Moscow and All Rus' established the day of memory of St. Oleg Bryansk. It was scheduled for October 3.

Remember that before asking for something or granting favor, we should first thank him for what we already have.

God bless you!

Life of the Venerable Prince Oleg of Bryansk

Venerable Prince Oleg of Bryansk († 1331, commemorated September 20/October 3)

Akathist to the blessed prince Oleg Bryansky (new edition)

The invasion of Rus' by Horde hordes in the 13th century was perceived by contemporaries as “the death of the Russian Land.” The identity of the state faded, its wealth was plundered, trade froze, cities, temples and monastic monasteries were burned. Everything earthly, temporary, all the works of human hands perished. Only that which is eternal and unshakable has survived: the faith of Christ, the Orthodox Church, which, according to the promise of the Savior, even hell itself will not overcome. She was purified like gold in the crucible of suffering, she rose unshakably like a rock in the raging waves of the ocean. Only on this stone of faith could Rus' be reborn when the hour of its Resurrection arrived.

In this era, the insignificance of the “glory of this world” was especially acutely felt, and while some princes sought and achieved power by hook or by crook, others easily parted with it, preferring the imperishable glory of the Kingdom of Heaven.

The confessional feat in the pagan Horde of the martyr prince Mikhail of Chernigov and his boyar Theodore on September 20, 1246 had universal significance. To all the persuasion of those around him to give in to the khan’s demands and worship idols, thereby retaining power and further serving Rus', as well as to other crafty speeches, Prince Mikhail answered: “I don’t want to be a Christian only in name, but

to do pagan deeds.” Having resisted this great temptation and not giving any reason to seduce the brethren, the prince suffered martyrdom for the sake of Christ. “I will not destroy my soul, be gone the glory of this corruptible world,” these dying words of Saints Michael and Theodore became a testament to Orthodox Rus'.

“The generation of the righteous will be blessed,” says the holy psalmist David. This fully applies to Saint Prince Michael. He became the founder of a pious dynasty; the prince's children and grandchildren continued his Christian ministry.

The daughter of the passion-bearer Michael, the Venerable Euphrosyne of Suzdal, was canonized for her strict fasting and godly life. Mikhail's son, Prince Roman of Bryansk, also received the special mercy of God. In 1288, he received healing in front of the miraculous icon of the Mother of God on Svenskaya Mountain, where he subsequently founded a temple and monastery in the name of the Dormition of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Nowadays he is revered as a holy noble prince.

It is known from the chronicles that in 1274 Roman, together with his son Oleg (in Holy Baptism - Leonty) participated in military operations against Lithuania. At the end of the war, Oleg came to Vladimir Volynsky to visit his sister Olga (in Holy Baptism - Elena) Romanovna, the wife of the pious Prince of Volynsky Vladimir Vasilkovich, the creator of many churches and monasteries. Having inherited rich lands in Volyn after the death of her husband, she, presumably, helped her brother Oleg in setting up his Bryansk monastery.

Seeing how transient and fragile the beauty and riches of the earth are, Oleg refused the tempting hereditary power of the Grand Duke of Chernigov, transferring it to his brother, and he himself accepted monasticism with the name of Vasily, in the Bryansk Peter and Paul Monastery, which he created at his own expense. In this monastery, the holy noble prince died as a strict ascetic at the beginning of the 14th century, presumably in 1331.

The body of Saint Oleg of Bryansk was buried under cover in the cathedral church of his monastery.

The memory of the Reverend Prince Oleg has been revered in the Russian Church since ancient times. In the parchment synodikon, a manuscript of the 15th-16th centuries of the Imperial Public Library, in the Rite of the Triumph of Orthodoxy, among those who pleased God, the eternal memory of Prince Oleg is proclaimed with one of his first names - Oleg Dobryansky.

It is known that out of reverence for the memory of the holy prince-ascetic, Patriarch Nikon elevated the Peter and Paul Monastery to the level of stauropegy (the stauropegic monastery is not governed by the diocesan bishops, but directly by the Patriarch). In 1701, on the site of a wooden church, where the holy relics of the blessed prince were buried, a stone church was built in honor of the Entry into the Temple of the Blessed Virgin Mary with a chapel in honor of the Supreme Apostles Peter and Paul. In another chapel, a throne was soon consecrated in honor of the icon of the Mother of God “The Sign”.

In 1830, the brethren of the Peter and Paul Monastery were transferred to the city of Yelets, and on August 1, 1836, at the request of the Bryansk City Society, a women's monastery was established on the site of the monastery.

In 1893, the solemn celebration of the memory of the Venerable Prince Oleg resumed in Bryansk. Local historian Pavel Nikitich Tikhanov (1905) collected and published materials for his life. In November 1893, Grand Duke Konstantin Konstantinovich, whose son was named after Saint Oleg, donated to the Peter and Paul Monastery the icon of “The Holy Prince Oleg of Bryansk the Wonderworker with a silver-gilded lamp for it.” On October 4, 1894, the publication of icons of the Bryansk saints, Prince Oleg and St. Polycarp, as well as their metal images, was authorized.

On July 14, 1897, the Holy Synod, in response to a petition from the Bryansk City Duma, issued a decree that stated: “In consideration of the pious zeal of the citizens of the city of Bryansk and according to the review of His Eminence Orlovsky, the Holy Synod determines: to hold a solemn celebration annually in the city of Bryansk in honor of holy saints Oleg and Polycarp, in the days of their memory, allowing at the same time to proclaim the names of these saints of God on holidays and to carry their icons along with the icon of the Svenskaya Mother of God in the procession of the cross around the city of Bryansk held annually on August 11 ... "

On July 13, 1900, the Bryansk City Duma declared September 20 - the day of remembrance of the Bryansk saint of God, holy Prince Oleg - not a trading day. On this day, since 1900, solemn services were held in all Bryansk churches. In 1903, with the blessing of the Holy Governing Synod, the “Faithful Monthly Book of All Russian Saints” was published, which for the first time indicated the day of memory of the Monk Oleg, Prince of Bryansk - September 20.

In 1923 the monastery was abolished. In the early 1930s, with the blessing of Archbishop Daniel (Troitsky) of Bryansk, in order to avoid desecration from atheists, the relics of the Venerable Prince Oleg were reburied under the altar of the Vvedensky Church of the monastery. Those who took part in the reburial promised not to tell anyone about what happened. Only in 1995, the former head of the Vvedensky Church, Maria Aleksandrovna Belova, who was a young parishioner in the 1930s, discovered the location of the holy relics. On August 10, 1995, with the blessing of Archbishop Melchizedek of Bryansk and Sevsk, the honorable remains of the holy prince were rediscovered and have since rested openly in the Vvedensky Church of the monastery.

At the request of His Grace Theophylact, Bishop of Bryansk and Sevsk, the Peter and Paul Convent was restored by the decision of the Holy Synod of the Russian Orthodox Church on October 7, 2002.

On December 5, 2003, with the blessing of His Holiness Patriarch Alexy of Moscow and All Rus', the celebration of the Council of Bryansk Saints was established on the day of memory of the Venerable Prince Oleg of Bryansk.

On June 23, 2012, in the Cathedral Complex, a solemn transfer of the relics of the Reverend Prince Oleg of Bryansk took place from the Cathedral Church in honor of the Resurrection of Christ to the Bryansk Cathedral in the Name of the Holy Trinity. The transfer ceremony and Divine service were led by Bishop Alexander of Bryansk and Sevsk. During the All-Night Vigil, the reliquary with the relics of the saint was carried by the clergy in a procession with numerous pilgrims to the Holy Trinity Cathedral. The shrine was installed in the center of the upper tier of the cathedral. At the end of the service, the bishop congratulated those present on the transfer of the saint’s relics, after which all believers were able to venerate the relics of St. Oleg of Bryansk.

On July 1, 2012, His Holiness Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Rus' made a pastoral visit to the Bryansk land in order to consecrate the newly built Cathedral in the Name of the Holy Trinity. Before the start of the Divine service, His Holiness reverently venerated the relics of the holy noble prince Oleg of Bryansk. A good tradition has been established, according to which a farewell prayer is served at the relics of the saint for Bryansk conscripts who ask the warrior prince for blessings and help in completing military service.

Every day, except Sundays and twelve holidays, Divine services in the Cathedral begin with a prayer service to the Reverend Prince Oleg of Bryansk at his holy relics.

Life of the Reverend

Not much historically reliable information has been preserved about Saint Oleg of Bryansk. It is known that Prince Oleg Bryansky is the grandson of the famous great martyr Mikhail of Chernigov. Saint Oleg of Bryansk, despite the fact that he and his father took part in the battle against the Lithuanians, was not vain and money-loving. Most of all, he was attracted to the life of a reclusive monk.

The life of the noble Prince of Bryansk occurred during a period when Rus' was under the yoke of the Tatar-Mongol yoke. Having repeatedly proven himself to be a good warrior, Prince Oleg nevertheless decided to renounce worldly life and find himself in monasticism. It is worth noting that even the prospect of inheriting the power of the Prince of Chernigov did not deter him, and Oleg Bryansky ceded rule to his brother.

After 1274, Prince Oleg took monastic vows, receiving a new name - Leonty, however, other sources contain information that in monasticism Oleg was named Vasily. The Peter and Paul Monastery, once called Bryansk, has survived to this day, built at the expense of St. Oleg and the place of his life after accepting monasticism.

Interesting! During the life spent within the walls of the monastery, as a monk, memories of the saint were preserved as of a monk, distinguished by great severity and restraint.

Church archives have preserved rather little information about the life of the former prince - only the date of his death remained known - September 20, 1307 (October 3, new style), and information about the place of his burial - the cathedral church of the Peter and Paul Monastery.

The feat of the holy prince

For Christianity, a person’s renunciation of titles and all kinds of worldly rewards is considered a spiritual feat. The life of the Holy Prince Oleg Bryansky is a direct confirmation of such a great deed in the name of the Lord, because having abandoned a rather large principality and its management, he found more - eternal shelter in God and veneration among people.

An important point in the prince’s life is that he donated all his personal material resources for the construction of the monastery, which later replaced the prince’s chambers for the rest of his life.

It is worth noting that for residents of the 18th century, the decision to renounce the princely title looked ridiculous and stupid in the eyes of most people, and in our time, not every person who has achieved promotion among the authorities will be able to exchange a career for the fate of a hermit. For this reason, Oleg Bryansky, who renounced the principality, was already spoken of during his lifetime as a saint.

What do they pray to the saint for?

Saint Oleg Bryansky is a person’s first assistant in the most difficult troubles of life. But not only the external circumstances of a person’s fate can be improved by prayer to this saint; people turn to him in cases where:

  • it is necessary to defeat ambition;
  • eradicate selfishness or pride;
  • avoid a situation of lust.

The Monk Oleg strengthens the prayer’s faith in God, helps to overcome the temptations of this world and, having chosen the right path, strive for spirituality. You can turn to Saint Oleg even when you need to restore inner peace and free yourself from various kinds of fears.

Important! When turning to a saint for help, we must remember that our faith and attitude towards the Lord play a great role in fulfilling prayer requests. If a person’s life is far from God and in it he is not guided by spiritual laws, then the prayers of such a person will not soon be heard.

What does it help with?

Oleg Bryansky, in addition to being considered the patron saint of the city of Bryansk, is popular in many holy places in Russia - his icon can often be found there.

For the reason that during his life Saint Oleg was always distinguished by special humility before the will of the Lord, those people who seek primarily spiritual life, as well as those whose loved ones have moved away from God and they need help in returning to him, turn to him for help .

A saint named Oleg is a good helper and intercessor in life for men, which is why they often have an icon of the holy prince Oleg of Bryansk in their house.

Veneration and relics

The Holy Prince of Bryansk was canonized almost immediately after his death; his holy relics are located in one of the churches of the Peter and Paul Monastery. Patriarch Nikon, filled with special reverence for Saint Oleg, ensured that the monastery began to be governed by the Patriarch and received the degree of stauropegy.

And in 1701, the wooden church where the saint’s relics were kept was replaced by a stone one, one of the chapels of which was consecrated in honor of the icon of the Most Holy Theotokos “The Sign”, and the other in honor of the apostles Peter and Paul.

In the fall of 1893, Prince Constantine donated to the monastery the icon of the “Holy Prince Oleg of Bryansk the Wonderworker,” as well as a gilded lamp and some money, which had to be spent on oil so that the lamp in front of the icon would be unquenchable.

Interesting! In one of the early iconographic images of St. Oleg, also located within the walls of the Peter and Paul Monastery, the prince is represented in a monastic robe and, according to iconographic tradition, a temple is held on one of his palms, while the other hand of the saint points to this church.

Such an image symbolically indicates to any parishioner who turns in prayer to Oleg Bryansky in front of his icon that let the church be a source of salvation, as the house of God and as a place where one can be filled with peace and strengthened in spirit.

In the 30s of the 20th century, with the blessing of Archbishop Daniel, the relics of St. Oleg of Bryansk were reburied; their new place was the basement under the altar of the Vvedenskaya Church of the monastery.

Reburial was necessary, first of all, for the reason that the beginning of the 20th century in the history of Russia is remembered as a time of godlessness and active struggle against the church; during these years many churches and monasteries were destroyed, many of the shrines were never discovered in later time.

It would not be amiss to note that the place of reburial of the holy relics of Prince Oleg remained a secret for a long time, for the reason mentioned above. Only in 1995, a certain Maria Belova, who was once the head of the Church of the Presentation, and during the reburial period an ordinary parishioner, discovered the place where the holy relics are located.

With the blessing of the Archbishop of Bryansk, as well as thanks to the efforts of Archpriest Georgy Kozlovsky, a priest of the Church of the Presentation, the holy relics of Oleg Bryansk were discovered and on August 10 of the same year they were transferred to the temple, where on Sundays during services the Akathist to the Reverend Oleg is traditionally read over the relics.

In June 2012, the relics of Oleg Bryansky were transferred from the Resurrection Church of the Peter and Paul Monastery to the Bryansk Cathedral of the Holy Trinity.

Relics and veneration

Soon after his death, Prince Oleg Bryansky was glorified as a saint. The shrine with the relics of the saint was installed in one of the churches of the Peter and Paul Monastery he built and rested there for centuries.

With the beginning of godless persecution after 1917, the relics of the saint were in danger of desecration. There are several versions of the events of that time. According to one of them, when in 1930 the Vvedenskaya (now Peter and Paul) Church, where the relics were kept, was desecrated by the new authorities, the rector, Bishop Daniel, decided to secretly bury the shrine with the relics.

Six and a half decades later, while working on his PhD thesis on the history of the Bryansk monasteries, the clergyman of the Peter and Paul Cathedral, Father George, decided to find out about the fate of the holy relics. During the search, he found an old woman who, in her youth, had witnessed the reburial of the saint. She indicated an approximate location - under the altar. On August 10, 1995, thanks to the efforts of search engine specialists, the relics of Holy Prince Oleg of Bryansk were rediscovered. Donations for the tomb were collected from the whole world. Nowadays the holy relics again rest in the Peter and Paul Church in a rich gilded shrine and are available for veneration.
